What a find! Hidden - almost invisible - at the end of a narrow graffiti-ridden passageway is vintage country-style den. Welcome to Freemans. Inside the crafted oak furnishing, hunting pics, stag heads and moody lighting couldn’t be more of a contrast to the exterior. The whole thing is classic old school New York. Embrace it.

This place is an incredible American restaurant! 🍴 Freemans at the end of the Freemans Alley offers an amazing 🤩 selection of delicious 🤤 dishes! 🍽️ Definitely get the Steak 🥩 and Pesto Pasta! 🍝 The place is beautifully decorated 🛋️, the ambience 🎶 is great, staff 👨‍🍳 is friendly and professional, and the service is quick. ⏲️ I wish I came here sooner and more often!

  • Review 3 (2024-09-08 - Rating: 5)

Came to Freemans hoping to get into Banzabar which was full at 5:30 on a Saturday so headed to the bar in the back instead for a couple drinks and a snack. The cocktails were delicious, refined and unique. I got the White Rabbit which was unexpectedly amazing but only on the menu for the next week or so so get it while you can! The bartender was so friendly and knowledgeable. The one downside was the salt and vinegar potatoes were a little bland with very little vinegar which was a bummer. We will definitely be back for cocktails and food in the future!

Love this charming spot for excellent food and drinks at the end of a graffiti filled alley. Worked with them on a private dinner for 18 and had a great experience from beginning to end, and guests were very happy with the meal, service, cocktails and wine. Great communication from Lina and the team throughout the process. We also attended a private event there a few months ago--they definitely know what they are doing when it comes to private events and dinner parties.

Came here for a weekend brunch! loved everything we ordered - lobster benedict, steak and potatoes + eggs, and french toast. the toast came with light, fluffy whipped cream that was so delicious even on its own! everything else was pretty average and we got enough to do family style to share with friends.

  • Review 6 (2024-07-03 - Rating: 5)

Freemans is a gem that offers exceptional food, impeccable service, and a charming atmosphere. The artichoke dip, pasta, and chicken dishes are all outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant for a memorable dining experience.

  • Review 7 (2024-09-08 - Rating: 5)

Beautiful, offbeat spot with just the kind of atmosphere I love! Seems like it’s been there forever. Lots of charming old taxidermy. Food was very good, as was the service.

  • Review 8 (2024-03-01 - Rating: 5)

Down a graffiti art covered alley, Freemans offers a rustic and cozy vibe. We are there for brunch and had a great visit. Their coffee is fantastic. I had the British breakfast plate, veggie styled. Everything was good and I would visit again.

  • Review 9 (2022-09-04 - Rating: 4)

What a fun tucked away spot! I love the alley entrance leading up to the doors. Cute interior and ambiance. Went for brunch with a group of 10 and it was lovely. Pricey but the food is good and our servers were really sweet. Get the artichoke dip. Awesome Bloody Mary too. Chicken and waffles was interesting - kind-of smoky flavor which was a fun twist on the usual. Oh, and bottomless coffee!

  • Review 10 (2023-01-21 - Rating: 5)

Loved this 💎 at the end of an alley, named Freemans Alley. I loved the vibe at Freeman. You can imagine having a drink with George Washington or any of our Founding Fathers. It has the feel of a Colonial Tavern. I went for Weekday Brunch so it wasnt crowded. The Artichoke Spinach Dip is amazing. I had The Crow as my cocktail. It was 😋. Its basis is Scotch and Irish Whiskey and it has Amontillado, Coconut, Ginger and Carrot. Its creamy and rich and packs a punch. The bartender, Beatriz, was a wonderful bartender. The service is good. The prices are a little high but on par for the area. I will definitely be back.

  • Review 11 (2024-04-20 - Rating: 4)

Wonderful aesthetic and no-frills American cuisine. Chicken, seafood, steak, the veggie sides you’d expect and quintessentially New York starters like tartare, dip, octopus.I recommend: steak tartare, Mac & cheese (to share with 2-3!!!), Atlantic halibut, baby bok choy as a side to share, and the island cocktail.

  • Review 12 (2024-05-21 - Rating: 5)

Freemans is right at the end of graffiti covered Freeman Alley. I found this spot after a ride around lower Manhattan on my bike. Inside it looked funky and vintage and was dimly lit. I was there for lunch and had the classic Freemans Cheeseburger. Super good. The patty was sitting below melted cheddar, the buns had burnt ends and came with a decent serving of fries. Highly recommend. Props to the playlist too, excellent music.

  • Review 13 (2023-02-26 - Rating: 5)

The owner(s) of this venue put a lot of effort in the decor. It felt like 18 hundreds or late victorian era. Dim light, wooden floor, aged furniture, all which gives a barn/ speakeasy vibe with a little hint of steam punk theme.I wasnt surprised to know there s a speakeasy on second floor that opens at 6 pm.All of this compliments the quiet alley neighborhood.Plenty of seating, in different unexpected corners and on the second floor. Seating includes several bar areas.Went for brunch, the food was average. Little pricey. Friendly staff and excellent service.Perfect for celebration. Reservation recommended.

  • Review 14 (2021-09-13 - Rating: 5)

Very unique area with in an alley. The graffiti gives it a nice touch when walking in. Once you make it to the end is where its located. We were wondering if we needed reservations. Went in around 1:30pm on a Sunday, not much of a wait as we sat at the bar til the table outside was ready. Service was quick and the waiter made many good suggestions and was awesome. The food and drinks were amazing, i would definitely come back for brunch in the future at this location.

  • Review 15 (2024-09-21 - Rating: 5)

My date and I celebrated our birthday there on Thursday night. We were greeted warmly upon entry although we never made a reservation. The food was delicious and the staff were great to us. We plan on going back in the very near future.

  • Review 16 (2023-12-31 - Rating: 5)

Cozy and dim lit vibes. Feels like a ski cabin. Great food and drinks! The steak was incredible and so was the fish!! The pasta was ok! Mac and cheese is a must.

  • Review 17 (2024-08-15 - Rating: 5)

This place has been on my bucket list and it delivered. Simply beautiful. The staff was attentive and very friendly. The decor was gorgeous and cozy, perfect for a rainy day. The food was delicious. I highly recommend it.Will be back!

  • Review 18 (2024-09-15 - Rating: 5)

Hidden gem in the LES. Love going down Freeman’s Alley to the restaurant. Once inside, a super chic space, decor and delicious food. Been to several private events upstairs and one of my favorite places to go for an intimate group experience.

  • Review 19 (2023-01-09 - Rating: 4)

Cute, quirky place with a lot of taxidermied animals staring at you, judging. The food was delicious. The service was slow. The music was good and we had a great time.

  • Review 20 (2024-09-15 - Rating: 5)

Food was on point each dish lots flavor well done. Service very nice. Only things place little small and table to close. But that nothing bad just my preference have little more space. Overall well done thank you

  • Review 21 (2020-01-05 - Rating: 5)

I went to Freeman’s for brunch twice now and I definitely recommend it. The restaurant has a comfy, homey vibe since it is structured like an actual house (multiple rooms, staircase in the middle). The drinks are 💯 and the service is always nice, yet efficient. This won’t be the cheapest brunch you’ll find in NY but the cost is well worth the quality of the food. It has some classics but also some unique takes like the brisket and grits (pictured) or duck hash. Honestly, everything that came out of the kitchen looked great.

  • Review 22 (2021-06-08 - Rating: 5)

What a great place !! We love it !!Atmosphere and decoration is really particular but we feel comfortable.Service is great, here, available.Food is just delicious as well. Nothing else to say that we want to come back.i recommend this place !

  • Review 23 (2019-02-07 - Rating: 5)

This place is awesome! Long alleyway covered in very cool graffiti leads to the entrance. When you walk in your transported to a country lodge. Wood and windows with stuffed animals covering all the walls - a goose, boar, various horned animals.Theres a long bar on the left, and a variety of rooms or nooks, and an upstairs too. Thoughtful touches throughout. The host and waiter greet you with friendly smiles and effusive hellos. The menu has good variety from delicious meat dishes to delicious vegetarian, and special cocktails. The food is crafted with care and ingredients of the highest quality.I had a kale salad, brisket sandwich and coffee. The dessert menu also looked amazing. This place is amazing! Enjoy

  • Review 24 (2019-12-31 - Rating: 5)

Great brunch location. Last time I was there I had the Skillet Eggs. They come out extremely hot so let them cool down first (I jumped right into it and burnt my mouth). Once the feeling came back to my tongue it was delicious. I felt like it was missing something, maybe better with a side of potatoes. Try to make a reservation. If not the alley in front of it is covered with sweet graffiti and street art.

  • Review 25 (2017-07-25 - Rating: 5)

Date night approved!!!Even coming here on a busy Friday night is pretty painless. There are 2 bars (thumps up for that). I prefer going to the one inside while waiting for a table for 2. Would probably take 30 minutes or so if you didnt give them a wrong name :DOur bartender is super busy and fast. We got our order within 5 minutes unluckily because we ordered before this crowd of 10. Book a table is advised but i dont see it necessary. We get to sit at the amazing bar and watch birds.Food is really good. I never have mussels the size they served. I can actually see them. Seriously shame on those cheap restaurants. Ambiance is romantic for a place thats located in the back alleyway, which is pretty creepy and cute. I love the fake door they painted.

  • Review 26 (2022-10-30 - Rating: 4)

Great brunch place🍽️ It’s always crowded but easy to get reservations. The food is good and consistent. I always get artichoke dip (which is amazing), the Mac and cheese are the bomb🤤🤤

  • Review 27 (2023-11-13 - Rating: 5)

Amazing cocktails in a dimly lit, hip space. It’s one of those busy establishments that’s not overwhelming and everyone is in a great mood. Come here with friends or on a date night. Didn’t try the food but everything that came out of the kitchen looked delicious. This is the place where I want my night to start

  • Review 28 (2023-04-05 - Rating: 4)

Artichoke dip came in a huge portion size. Brunch here is pretty good, mostly unique for its outdoor seating in the alley. Food was only alright in my opinion.

  • Review 29 (2024-10-22 - Rating: 5)

This place is amazing, the food is fantastic and the house itself is cozy and beautiful. You can’t miss this place if you are in the Lower East Side. More contents on IG @myeverydaywines

  • Review 30 (2022-01-23 - Rating: 5)

Loved this place. The artichoke dip was beyond! I could’ve eaten that one dish all night. Their cocktails are also delicious and the service was great! Such a beautiful place with great atmosphere. Would definitely come back here

  • Review 31 (2018-04-01 - Rating: 5)

The hidden gem has been here for years and Ive only been twice but after this last experience I may go more often. Seriously it was the best, most juiciest piece of chicken breast Ive ever had. This boneless masterpiece came with these pickled mushrooms and roasted turnip cubes over this creamy sauce from the Gods!My wife got the whole grilled fish with a side of mash potatoes. The fish was perfectly cooked and tasted extremely fresh. With only a garnish of a half char-grilled lemon I thought the fish plate was rather empty, especially for the price we paid. Im glad I got the chicken though as it left me speechless.Quality meat this good however comes at a hefty price! Youre looking to pay between 26 and 34 dollars a plate and thats not including sides. For an additional 10 bucks you can get a good portion of mash potatoes that can feed 2 people and its delicious. The wine selection is serious! There was a whole separate menu 3 or 4 pages thick of wine bottle selections. Or there is an option to get glasses of wine ranging between 10 to 15 bucks which is not bad at all.Lastly lets talk about the ambience. The place is dark and discrete. Very romantic spot for an anniversary or intimate conversation. Please DONT bring your kids here! And Id suggest reserving for a table upstairs as its less busy.

  • Review 32 (2022-01-12 - Rating: 4)

Cool relaxed atmosphere at Freeman’s down the alley. Artichoke dip and brussel sprout salad appetizer were great- I could have had this as a main! Yum! The roasted chicken and farro was nice, but nothing out of the ordinary, however the banana’s foster brought it home. 4 stars because the service was a little slow.

  • Review 33 (2024-12-30 - Rating: 5)

The speakeasy bar is a bit expensive but the cocktails were amazing!

  • Review 34 (2018-11-22 - Rating: 4)

Very decent dating place. Outside the restaurant is a good place to take picture.Skillet egg is amazing and do not add more cheese it will be salty. The girl siting next to us was keep coughing. So I have to to stop eating without finishing my food lol.

  • Review 35 (2024-11-21 - Rating: 5)

Me and my friend had a lunch at Freemans. My English breakfast was good! Mushrooms were little salty in my opinion. And the burger was great.

  • Review 36 (2024-10-26 - Rating: 5)

Absolutely fantastic 👏 👌 thank you so much 🎉

  • Review 37 (2024-06-06 - Rating: 5)

Beautiful spot tucked away in a string light-lit alley in the LES. My partner and I love Freeman’s for special occasions and have enjoyed many a romantic dinner there. Ambience is perfect and the food is always delicious. I also love that they have several different dining rooms depending on our mood (and their availability). I recommend reservations but they also take walk-ins and have a great bar while you’re waiting.

  • Review 38 (2024-11-17 - Rating: 5)

Found this spot by accident but Im glad we did. Pancakes were amazing, the chicken and sausages as well. Would definitely come back.

  • Review 39 (2024-09-13 - Rating: 5)

Had a great evening at Freemans. Fantastic food and great service in a cosy dinning room which had an old tavern feel. Special thanks to Sarah Funky for the recommendation. A+++

  • Review 40 (2022-11-28 - Rating: 5)

I had my 25th birthday brunch here! I cant recommend it more, the atmosphere, food, and staff are all so lovely. My friends are a mess and ran late, they wouldve missed out on ordering food bc the kitchen was to close at 3, but our server (and host) allowed us to place the order for our friends and sat us without everyone present. It feels like youve traveled out of nyc and into a Victorian home in small town Vermont. Seriously its so nicely decorated in there, my friends were so impressed by the cozy feel of the private room they had us in!! Our server was incredibly sweet, I dont remember their name but they did a wonderful job of keeping on top of us without being annoying. The food was delicious and honestly the price is on par with the rest of Manhattan brunch spots but youll find a more interesting plate here.

  • Review 41 (2024-12-13 - Rating: 5)

We held our rehearsal dinner there and we absolutely loved it. Amazing food and staff bent backwards to accommodate us.

  • Review 42 (2024-06-24 - Rating: 4)

We came to Freemans for brunch on a Sunday in a group of 4. We had reservations and were 15 minutes late but had no issues being seated. The vibe here is really nice - kinda homey and rustic. It was a pleasant experience. On the recommendations of other reviews, we had the Hot Artichoke Dip as a starter and it was great, so I would also suggest ordering that. The Norwegian Benedict was pretty decent but kind of basic. I would probably order something else next time. The Sourdough Pancakes were delicious, especially with the salted walnut butter. We were able to substitute the bourbon maple syrup for regular maple syrup. The service here was very good, the bathrooms were clean, and there was a guy who looks like Ben Affleck having brunch.

  • Review 43 (2021-06-18 - Rating: 5)

This place is phenomenal! Freeman’s is tucked away in an alley but when you enter you feel as though you’ve been transformed into a old school supper club. The aesthetics of this place are so cool and unique that you can’t stop looking around. We were able to be seated immediately on a Tuesday night and were greeted by the lovely staff. We had the Gravlax, shishoto peppers, spring risotto and the duck and just wow. Everything came out in a timely manner and was full of flavor and each dish stood out on its own. If you haven’t made your way back to the Freeman alley, you are missing out!

  • Review 44 (2022-04-22 - Rating: 5)

Ordered way too much food. 10/10 would do again.Bathroom is really clean and there is a whole wall of toilet paper. Mirror is for tall people and the bathroom is darky and broody. 10/10 would pee here again.

  • Review 45 (2018-06-11 - Rating: 5)

Hard to locate as it is, it’s a great find indeed. The decor is very quaint - has a speak easy like feel, but is quite spacious actually with lot of different table as well as bar seating options. The food is great too - the prices are a bit steep for the small sharing plates they have, but the menu was interesting and all the dishes we ordered were great. The place is quite deservingly on various top eat lists for NYC.

  • Review 46 (2024-10-18 - Rating: 5)

Freemans offers a truly delightful dining experience, combining delicious food, impeccable service, and a charming ambiance. The restaurants old-school NYC design, complete with bookshelves and animal decor, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere (not for some!).While I wasnt able to capture the food in photos, I can confidently say that every dish was a culinary masterpiece. The menu featured a variety of options, all of which were executed to perfection. The flavours were rich and satisfying, and the presentation was impeccable. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a friendly smile and attentive service. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. It’s a 5/5 🔥

  • Review 47 (2017-12-04 - Rating: 5)

Cool place that makes you feel like you stepped back in time. The back bar has some excellent mixologists. I recommend the old fashioned. The walk up to the building is amazing. Best alley in NYC!

  • Review 48 (2024-10-14 - Rating: 5)

    A quiet and cozy place

  • Review 49 (2019-07-05 - Rating: 4)

Good food. Solid vibe and pretty good service. Good people watching (according to my wife). A lot of taxidermy displayed which isnt my thing, personally. Definitely unique location. Is not getting off the street customers.

  • Review 50 (2021-10-21 - Rating: 4)

I had the huevos rancheros, which was pretty solid. The cocktails are kind of weak, so heads up on that. The place is super cute, tucked away in an alley with lots of colors and outdoor seating.

  • Review 51 (2024-07-11 - Rating: 5)

A fabulous restaurant hidden from main streets with a cozy and stylish vibe. The food is spot on! 😘 I tried the full English breakfast, and it was flavorful and tasty. 😋 With a kiss of booze, everything felt so chill and satisfying. The restaurant is a bit pricy, but at the end of the day, it is New York standard. I will go back again when I have time. 😊

  • Review 52 (2024-03-28 - Rating: 5)

Beautiful spot with a great menu. Good quality food. Decent service. Great location.

  • Review 53 (2019-01-06 - Rating: 5)

I went here with my family and some friends, and to be honest we were pretty skeptical about it. There was a brief wait while our table in the wine room was prepared, which was not a problem at all. We sat at the bar for a bit and the bartender gave us some sass, but hey she was stressed because the place was busy, so no big deal. When we got seated, and checked the menu we noticed it was easily over 80 degrees in the room, and the meals were way more expensive, and weirder, than expected. We debated leaving, but ended up staying and ordering the spaghetti and some other pasta dish, as well as the spinach artichoke dip and mussels. To our amazement, the food was really, really good. The unique ingredients made the dishes unlike anything we could have expected. Also, the entrance was beautifully decorated, which made the place very inviting, which helps because the place is in the back of an alley which is kinda sus. I definitely would recommend this place, but wear layers cause it’s really hot.

  • Review 54 (2022-09-01 - Rating: 4)

I love the ambience of this place and how it’s kinda hidden all the way in the yard. Food was delicious and cocktails one of the good I tried.Had a good brunch timeI deducted one star only because place was super loud and it was impossible to have a conversation.

  • Review 55 (2022-07-16 - Rating: 5)

A perfect place for brunch in nyc. very healthy food. it is a pity that it is still trendy to hang dead animals on the walls. Otherwise everything perfect!

  • Review 56 (2019-01-09 - Rating: 5)

Charming entry and interior, with a rustic wooden bar and historic decor of mounted antlers and black and white framed pictures. This is larger inside than it seems with two bars and a back dining room perfect for a small party or gathering. The menu is delicious. The mussels appetizer is amazing and an absolute new favorite with its sweet ginger garlic broth. Big enough to share as an appetizer or as a single entree. The filet is delicious with a side of potatoes. Can’t wait to go back!

  • Review 57 (2018-12-22 - Rating: 5)

One of the best kept secrets in town , not ! Unfortunately, now everybody knows of this awesome place. Seasonal menu , awesome drinks and very diverse brunch menu.

One of my favorite spot to eat and to enjoy brunch in New York, cool and hip place, yummy food and great atmosphere

  • Review 60 (2024-04-17 - Rating: 5)

I mean this is a classic NYC spot for a great meal in a cool location. It had been years since I had been last and it was even better than I remembered. So fun taking a mini stroll through the graffiti-lined alley before arriving at the unassuming entrance. We had the artichoke dip thanks to many of you recommending it, and then each got the lobster Benedict.

  • Review 61 (2024-10-09 - Rating: 5)

Amazing little place tucked away in an alleyway in the LES. Great brunch food, lively atmosphere and pleasant staff.

  • Review 62 (2024-06-03 - Rating: 5)

Such a great place. Some of the staff can be a bit more friendly. We were ready to spend some good money on food and wine but were literally rushed out the door.

  • Review 63 (2024-02-04 - Rating: 5)

No notes. Went during a Saturday brunch rush and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and attentive. Had a couple of fantastic and unique cocktails, and loved Freemans take on both shrimp & grits and chicken & waffles. I’m always skeptical of ordering those dishes in “the north” but they really did the food justice.

  • Review 64 (2024-08-25 - Rating: 4)

Nice restaurant gives the look of being very old although we were kind of doped I fell as it is only 20 years old lol Anyways besides that the food we 3.5/5, service was great and atmosphere was generally very nice. The locality is unique which drew us there (the graffitis outside are amazing sight). We tried fish, steak, pork chops, and pasta with Brussels sprouts and salad so basically all varieties of food you can say. Felt prices are quite high for the quality and taste. Also nothing comes with side except steak which is also very odd considering the prices of entrees. Don’t think we will go back but decent for a one night dinner spot without reservations. We spent about $275 for four no drinks or desserts.

  • Review 65 (2024-05-07 - Rating: 5)

My experience at Freemans was delightful, featuring delicious food and excellent service. While I appreciated the rustic ambiance, I dont care for the use of animals as decoration, though it didnt detract from the overall pleasant atmosphere. We had an avocado-toast, five-cheese mac and cheese, and a Bloody Mary. The avocado toast was a standout, and I would gladly order it again and recommend it.However, the true stars were the mac and cheese and the Bloody Mary. The mac and cheese had the perfect balance of creaminess and cheese flavor, while the Bloody Mary was expertly crafted and to my taste spicy but not overwhelming, with just the right amount of tomato. Overall, a memorable dining experience that I would happily repeat.

  • Review 67 (2024-12-08 - Rating: 5)

Went for brunch yesterday with a British friend and another friend visiting from out of town. It was fantastic!! One of the best brunches I have ever had. Staff was so accommodating and helpful. The alley leading to the restaurant is fascinating, quirky and very hip with vibrant and colorful graffiti art on the walls. The restaurant itself feels like a very old rustic American tavern. A photographer would have a field day in here. Everywhere you look is another beautiful photo. Decor and atmosphere couldn’t be better. Makes you feel right at home. Wanted to come back the very next day!! Will def be back soon. What a find and truly a gem! It’s a real slice of old school NYC life. A must for sure.

  • Review 70 (2024-09-19 - Rating: 5)

We hosted an event (brunch) of about fifty people in their second floor party rooms. When we first went to check it out, my impression, with apologies to Freemans, was that it seemed dated. I am including a picture of what it actually looked like on the day of. Simply classy, elegant and imbued with a delightful warmth which was so appropriate to the event we were having. WOW!!! Partial but representative picture included.Lina Mark, our point person, for the entire event is truly remarkable as a responsive, pro-active and accommodating professional who understood our requirements and more than met them. Abundance was the catch phrase and we were not let down in any respect. What stood out as the most remarkable ingredient in this affair and commented upon by many of our guests was the outstanding level of service. It was unobtrusive, yet always present, and importantly, hospitable. Our heartful thanks to this amazing team put together for our do.At initial mingling time wait-staff glided through with mimosas and bloody Marys and accommodated some of our finicky guests with their choice of cocktails. Abundance! The food included their famous artichoke dip and avocado toast for appetizers. Entrees included were Nashville Hot Chicken, Norwegian Benedict and a delish frittata. The chicken, for me, proved to be outstanding! Desserts included mini Basque cheesecakes, brownies and ice cream. It was judiciously laid out family style on the tables and proved to be very successful in terms of reach for everyone.Am I getting tiresome? Sorry, I cant seem to get over it!!

If you love life, or once loved life, or will love life, if only for a microsecond, one day, this is the place for you. It is also a place for those who have a love life, as much as for those who have no love life. The cocktails are peacock tails, the food is cooked by the best of angels. Get some.

  • Review 75 (2023-09-07 - Rating: 5)

We were led here by my wifes colleagues when we visited NYC. The alley was very colourful and interesting. When we entered the restaurant, we were promptly greeted by the staff. The staff here was very pleasant and really accommodating to our needs and helped us with our napping toddler. The food was superb and the atmosphere was cozy. I had a great time there.

Super cute brunch! Love the decor and vibe. The staff was extremely accommodating. There was a problem with our reservations but they accommodated my party anyways. The food was tasty. Appetizers we enjoyed the artichoke dip and caesar salad. Love the caesar salad! So fresh snd the dressing was spot on!! I ordered the egg benedict with smoked salmon for an entree. My party had the burger and shrimp with grits which they enjoyed.Would come back!!

I made a reservation to dine here for restaurant week. I sat at the bar, which was cozy but tight. I appreciated the prompt of service by the bartender and accuracy of making multiple drinks. The dishes were delicious, but the mussels appetizer was first place for me. Here are a few pictures to show why these food options are worth ordering.

I finally had the chance to try Freeman’s for lunch with a friend, and it exceeded all my expectations. From the charming entrance tucked away from the bustling streets to the elegant, warm ambiance inside, every detail added to the experience. But what truly stood out was the service — absolutely exceptional. Our host was incredibly kind, professional, and welcoming, with a generosity that made us feel genuinely cared for. Freeman’s is a hidden gem in NYC, and the attentive, friendly service is a big part of what makes it so special.

A spectacular space at the end of Freeman Alley, the cocktail menu is a unique and superlative testament to mixology genius behind the bar. Nothing ordinary, and nothing done without creativity and excellence.

Food was just ok but the alley and ambiance are worth a trip here at least once

A quirky restaurant and bar in the Lower East side. Frank the barman, was incredible knowledgeable and made you feel home. Drinks and food are divine although be careful that the portions are big.

  • Review 83 (2023-02-27 - Rating: 5)

Amazing dinner here this weekend! The artichoke dip appetizer was so good and very filling. The pork chop was more like a pork mountain of tender and crispy meat. Cant say enough good things about the food. Waitress and staff were very attentive!

If you want quality food that will keep you going for half the day, this is your place! Even though it was packed, we got served pretty quickly and everything we had was delicious. I personally recommend the Nashville Hot Chicken!

  • Review 85 (2024-12-18 - Rating: 4)

Came for dinner on a weekday. Very cosy and rustic restaurant! Perhaps this is more a brunch spot because the dinner menu is not nearly as good as the brunch menu. Overall great vibes but mediocre food if you come for dinner.

  • Review 86 (2019-01-28 - Rating: 5)

Off the beaten path (down an alley), but worth it. The food is great.

  • Review 87 (2023-02-26 - Rating: 5)

Absolutely love Freeman’s!! Nice little hidden gem tucked away on the east side. I’ve been here for both dinner and brunch multiple times and it never disappoints. Cocktails are great and they always have good beer there. I would go every weekend if I could afford it. It’s so good. Definitely recommend a reservation. It seems to be pretty busy every time I go.

  • Review 88 (2023-08-06 - Rating: 4)

Decent food but expensive for the area. My chicken club sandwich was good but my side salad was a touch salty. Vibe is fun and it wasn’t hard to get a table for Saturday brunch. Service wasn’t rushed and it’s a good spot for a group

  • Review 89 (2023-09-13 - Rating: 5)

Freemans has a great ambiance, which might be a theme in places I like. I find service to be as important as the food served. And they do both very well. The whole fish is my go to order as I dont live in NYC so this is the first restaurant I visit each time Im in town for the US Open or visiting friends.

  • Review 90 (2024-10-14 - Rating: 5)

My mom and I were visiting the city last weekend and Im soo happy we ended up at Freemans! We didnt make a reservation and went at busy time in the evening, but there were bar seats open. We were happy to take them since they serve their full menu at the bar. Every thing we ordered was fantastic! We ordered an app, two entrees, and a couple of cocktails. My mom had the chicken and I had the sea bass-- two totally different dishes but they were both SO good!Edgar was behind the bar and took care of us and he was wonderful! Super nice guy, made great recommendations, and was a pleasure to chat with. Next time were in the city, well definitely be back.

Freemans is a must-visit American restaurant in New York City. The decor has a dark, eccentric atmosphere that adds to the dining experience. The food and drinks are exceptional and definitely worth trying. The staff is friendly and attentive, making the overall dining experience memorable. It can get quite busy, so be sure to make a reservation.

  • Review 95 (2023-11-26 - Rating: 5)

Super cute. Little pricy, but good for cute brunch. Mimosa was $15? $14? Which was a bit more than other brunch places. Food was good and overall all good

  • Review 96 (2023-02-19 - Rating: 5)

Wonderful restaurant, quite near perfect. The waiter was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about menu minutiae. Food came out a little faster then typical for any restaurant, even on a busy weekend. And as for the food, everything we had was quite good to amazing. Very good duck confit, very good cod, the sides - various roasted vegetables - were amazing, best Ive had. The Honey drizzled brussel sprouts were astoundingly good. The cocktails were great too, especially the Freeman cocktail, their own recipe. Ambiance is nice too, Rich with some turn of the century-ish age charm but not stuffy; lively vibe without being too crowded or cramped or hard to hear others speaking. If you love great food and a good night out with good service and vibes, you have to come here at least once. (Id recommend making a reservation over walking up)

  • Review 97 (2024-09-04 - Rating: 5)

My partner and I came in here with no expectation, I researched the place before coming and loved the atmosphere and vibe. We ordered the burger (side of fries) which was very generous (although lacking in flavor) it was delicious and very filling. My partner ordered the chicken club (side salad) and that was delicious, all the right flavors. The highlight of our meal was our server (EMMA) she was amazing, so personable, was great at making recommendations, and was able to check on us without seeming overbearing. We will make sure to make this one of our staples thanks to the wonderful service from Emma. It’s very difficult to find quality food, service, and atmosphere in one place. Will be back!

Hidden restaurant in Lover East Side. That restaurant is so different from anything you know or you been in. It’s two story place both floors have bar and rooms for pastries. Second floor has lounge with comfy couches. Big choice of red , white and sparkling wine. My Artichoke dip was good and portion was a good size . Pork chop was huge it’s good for two people. Desert was not that good and I would like for ice cream to be just a little bigger. I definitely have to comeback to try more dishes.

Loved this place! Although a few items were missing from the weekend brunch menu due to short staffing at the moment, everything was amazing! The location is between an alley, which was cool. The restaurant itself was beautiful and cozy. The service was AMAZING. Our waitress was very kind and attentive. We had refills of coffee and bread for our appetizer before even asking. Food was great and the drinks were amazing! Can’t wait to go back again to try some of the missing items from the menu!! :)

What a fun place! love how its tucked at the end of the alley. The staff was accommodating and attentive. Id have given them 5 stars save the Bloody Mary was weak and the flavor of the Spring Bowl needs to be punched up. The Norwegian Benedict was great and the Devils on Horseback were outstanding. Definitely going back to sample more of the menu.

This restaurant used to be a hidden, kind of a secret spot that wasn’t really known to many people. The words have gotten out since then, and it is now a super popular spot.We didn’t have a reservation, so we decided to get there early. We didn’t have any issue getting a table with just a handful of people at that time. The inside was very cozy. Feeling of an old tavern or a log cabin, filled with animals and antlers on the walls. They had brunch menu and lunch menu, and you can order from both menu during brunch. We ordered Five Cheese Macaroni and Skillet Eggs. They both came in a small iron skillet. It was smaller than expected, but I always say quality over quantity. They were packed with flavor, comforting, and made really well.We had a nice, relaxing, tasty brunch here. The service was polite and nice, we were well taken care of. The menu is a bit on pricey side, but the quality is super high. I have been wanting to try Freemans for quite a long time, I am glad we finally got to dine here! I would like to go back for more, and try some of their cocktails as well in a near future!

  • Review 120 (2019-04-14 - Rating: 4)

This is a really cute restaurant! You can find it at the end of a small narrow alley covered in graffiti. The place has a unique atmosphere inside but not well lit. We ordered the cheeseburger and the banana pancakes. Cheeseburger was a little burnt but other than that was pretty good. Banana pancake was the best I had in the city, highly recommended.

Great Hot Artichoke Dip! English breakfast and Norwegian Benedict was good.

  • Review 122 (2021-07-04 - Rating: 4)

Drinks were great. Had the Old Fashioned and the Summer Water. Food was okay. We shared an artichoke dip which was delicious. The muscles were well received. The salmon special was nothing special. The fish was a bit slimy, either not cooked well or the fish wasn’t fresh. Additionally the Brussel sprouts weren’t cooked enough. The risotto was a good texture but flavor wasn’t quiet there. The hostess was nice and helpful. Outdoor seating is nice, inside is of course very intimate and has a cozy feel.

  • Review 130 (2018-12-18 - Rating: 5)

Amazing cocktails and you can never go wrong with their food for Brunch time. The place itself is not easy to spot from the street since they are in an alley but the vibe inside the restaurant and outside is perfect.Warning: it was get a little crowded when you sit inside but its still cozy.Service is also great but when it gets busy, dont expect your server to be there every 5 mins. Theyre running around like crazy trying to cover all the tables.

  • Review 131 (2023-01-30 - Rating: 4)

Great food and space for larger intimate gatherings. We did a pre fixe menu that we selected ahead of time and I was kind of hoping they’d offer us the leftovers. I at least hope they didn’t waste them.

  • Review 132 (2022-04-03 - Rating: 5)

This place is hard to find. Be sure to check out google maps first. It is worth the effort and a bit of fun to walk down a long alley filled with graffiti to arrive at the joint. Loud and fun. 3 bars. One just inside the front door is the least fun, one to the right and several rooms ahead is small but lots of fun, upstairs secret bar is not open often, but quieter with available. Food is awesome. Must have the artichoke dip. Killer!!! Devils on Horseback are not deviled eggs like 99% of the customers believe. They are dates filled with blue cheese and wrapped in bacon then cooked to a crispy crunch. They are totally different than you expect but they are great. Loved the mussels app as well. Hangar steak was tender and very well flavored. Bananas foster desert was incredible. We love fun loud places like this and we will return often. I tried to get as many photos as I could be it is dark inside so bear with me. Lots of animals on the walls that make it different. Be sure to walk around upstairs and downstairs to see all of the different rooms. Walk down the alley like you know what you are doing and everyone will think you are an insider. This is a super safe hood so do not be afraid of the alley at all. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Freemans is truly a hidden gem in a quiet alley way~Amazing chicken waffles - the thigh was very juicy and perfect amount of crunch - and the eggs benny with smoked salmon was creamy and delightful! The artichoke dip is highly recommended as well - fyi, the bread slices are small/bite-sized and soft.Though the decorative specimen did freak me out a tad, I still had a great dining experience.

Stumbled upon this place I saw an alley with lights at the end so decided to drag my friends in the mysterious alley ( which was lit up with cool art work ) The place is huge and we just ordered drinks at the bar but the food looked really good. The staff was amazing and so was the bartender G. I will definitely be coming back here for some food and maybe check out the speakeasy upstairs. Highly recommend!!!! Get the espresso martini with tequila or the margarita both were delicious.

Beautiful, relatively spacious restaurant in LES. No reservations for smaller parties, so the wait can be quite long during weekends. Good thing the bars are great, especially this one bartender we met was incredibly delightful. To be honest, I dont think Ive paid enough attention to the entrees when I order the past few times Ive visited, so I cant really comment accurately on the main dishes, but I dont remember being blown away. However, some appetizers are really yum. Anyways, love this restaurant thats tucked away in the alleys of LES. A fresh surprise with a different environment makes Freemans stands out among the many LES restaurants.

  • Review 137 (2013-09-23 - Rating: 4)

Great ambiance and the location makes me feel like its a well kept secret (at the dead end of an alley). Ive been here twice and enjoyed the blueberry pancakes both times. Had the bloody mary during my first visit and just wasnt a fan, but the food definitely made up for it.Highly recommend this spot for brunch. Ive only gone with one other person, so Im not sure if its good for groups.

  • Review 138 (2017-01-26 - Rating: 5)

Freemans is obviously successful enough that they dont need to advertise. No sign outside, hidden up an alley, a long way from any main thoroughfare. Yet the place was two thirds full on a cold Tuesday evening and it was only 730pm. The cocktail list was inventive, and I was tempted by at least two thirds of the options available. I ended up going for the eponymously named house cocktail, and it was stellar! Noticeably more interesting than the already tasty choice my companion made. A fascinating mix of rye, pomegranate molasses, and house bitters among other things - sharp, flavorful, slightly smoky but not bitter. Warm and inviting and totally delicious. The decor is laid back, but cool - chic without being in even the same zip code as shabby. The bar top looked to be made from tin, and was a nice complement to the wood, glass, and soft (but not dim) lighting. Service was laid back but prompt - welcoming but unobtrusive. We sat at the bar and had a few snacks to go with our drinks, and I thoroughly enjoyed the artichoke dip, mainly because it was flavorful and tangy without the almost universal cop-out of making it almost entirely out of cheese. This would be a great place to take a date - somewhere that feels nice, is subtly cool and well put together, without making anyone too conscious as to whether they are dressed up enough. Im definitely going back, and Ill probably look to eat in the restaurant. I have no doubts that the experience will be at least as good as my first time there.

The English breakfast is healthy and good but the mushroom has an earthy taste. I ate everything but I had to eat the mushrooms with the potatoes 🥔. The potatoe wedges & bacon were the best part. I would try scrambled eggs instead of fried next time. The sausage wasn’t my favorite. I also got to try the French toast. The French toast might be the best French toast I ever had!! The texture is perfect & Not too sweet

Did a little research before going and needed a very nice place for lunch between the 9/11 Memorial and Theater District. This place is super cool from the walk down the alley to the Brownie Ice Cream dessert. Rustic decor is spot on, wine room is very nice, old wood floors and non matching tables add a crazy amount of charm. The food is delicious. Our table had a whole grilled brook trout (complete with head), an open face omelette and a fried chicken sandwich topped off with onion rings. Our server was especially friendly, asked us why we were in town and remembered to tell us to enjoy our show on the way out. We couldnt have picked a better place to eat and you should absolutely deviate off the beaten path and give this place your business.

Island Sabbatical: please take all my money.Chilaquiles (ordered mine w/scrambled egg): perfect amount of crisp/softness of chips with that green salsa. The cilantro makes it all taste so fresh! (Wish they served a dollop of sour cream to balance the tanginess of green salsa but even without it, they were amazing!)

Ambiance and decor is classy rustic. The inside is much larger that what youd think from the outside. Two bars downstairs with about 30 - 40 tables downstairs from rough observation. Seating is on the tighter side but not cramped.Wed gotten there a little earlier to try out the upstairs bar, but it was closed for a private party. No fret they had a table available for us even though we were 20 minutes early than our reservation.Drinks were creative and flavorful. I had the Freeman cocktail and was pleased. We ordered the Filet and the grilled trout with a couple of sides, side salad and sauteed mushrooms. I was impressed with the trout. Fully boned and cooked perfectly. The Filet was so so, tender but not much flavor. The side of sauteed mushrooms was awesome! A bit on the pricy side for sides but I get it.All in all had a great experience and would love to come back and try their brunch.

We ordered the Butternut Squash Soup and it was really creamy and smooth. I also like the flavors in Burrata & Delicata, but one of the squash is much smaller than the other and I’d wish the size were more even. I added avocado for Huevos Rancheros and I expected a bigger avocado as well, but it was very small for an extra. Chicken Cutlet Sandwich was big and juicy. Fries were thick and crispy just the way I like it. I really like the Crispy Brussels Sprouts with chipotle honey. The burnt crispy edges drizzled in chipotle honey makes the flavor taste bitter sweet. The portion was just right. Overall, the food was very delicious.

Beautiful place, world-class French Toast (and I mean it), super-friendly staff (thank you, Edgar H.!) - awesome.

This place is perfect. I threw my fiancé a surprise birthday party in one of their private dining rooms. The staff handled everything, down to the music. The food was delicious (artichoke dip and the mushroom ragú were favourites), the wine suggestions were perfect, and I cannot get over how impeccable the service was. So attentive and detail oriented. If you need to throw a private party, do it here. Can’t wait for the next one. Thank you, Freemans! xx

Fun alley vibe and nice dining room. Service was incredibly quick for me with food dropped within 15 min of ordering. Cocktails are fun and inventive. Would return for dinner sometime.

Amazing food and drinks. Great wine list. Plenty of seating - down an alley way, unlike any other place I can think of in NYC. Super friendly and helpful staff. Cannot say enough about the food - devils on horseback are always an amazing starter - we had our company holiday party here and the upstairs is spacious. Love this spot.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while (admittedly since Caila Quinn posted about it on Instagram...) And I was thrilled about everything! The decor and service were wonderful, and the food was delicious. My friend and I split the cinnamon roll for dessert and that was definitely a highlight. They also have a really cool space upstairs that can be rented for private events. Will definitely be back.

Attended a party here in a back room and the food was quite good (but unsure it it was good enough for the price it came to). Nice atmosphere and pleasant staff though, which is always a plus.Unfortunately, the room we were in/paying for also doubled as wine storage so the constant interruption of staff having to squeeze behind you to get bottles was a bit of a hindrance.
