Ive had my eye on this bar for awhile and was very excited to visit. Now, this place is the modern day definition of speakeasy because I embarrasingly walked past the location probably 5 times before I finally found the entrance. After we finally got inside, our party of 3 was seated at a booth. They have 2 sections to the place - one main section with booths and bar seating (and VERY dimly lit), and another section that is a separate room with tables. The separate room was more brightly lit. We sat at a booth in the main section of the bar - I would say a party of 4 will fit in the booth but itll be pretty cozy seating. The menu of this place was amazing and the variety of drinks was awesome. I cannot recall which drinks we got but we got a variety with a range of flavor profiles and spirit fowardness. The drinks were all very balanced (in their appropriate ways) and so delicious.I would definitely recommend this place for a cozy date! (probably not for larger parties)

Very cool speakeasy behind Patent Coffee which has a Tesla inspired vibe - the light bulbs adorn the ceiling in both rooms. The seating time is 90 minutes and you will be handed a check when your time is up. Creative cocktails didn’t disappoint and the service was amazing.

  • Review 3 (2024-07-17 - Rating: 5)

Service:The service was exceptional and swift. Our waitress provided detailed and insightful descriptions of the cocktails, offering recommendations based on preferences for sweet, sour, and other taste profiles. This was incredibly helpful given the eclectic menu inspired by Tesla and his inventions.Ambience:The ambience was fantastic. The speakeasy is cleverly hidden behind a coffee bar, with the entrance concealed behind a wall unit displaying various coffee items. This added an element of surprise and intrigue to the experience. Id recommend making a reservation, but if youre fortunate, like we were on a rainy day, you might not have to wait at all.Drinks:The cocktails are a bit pricey, averaging in the $20 range, but they are worth it for the unique experience. The menu features a variety of innovative drinks, some even served in lightbulb-shaped glasses, aligning perfectly with the Tesla theme. The creativity and quality of the drinks make this a memorable experience.Overall, the combination of excellent service, unique ambience, and innovative cocktails makes this a highly recommended spot.

Patent Pending is a Mexican-style bar specializing in Mexican spirits. The vibe is lively with all Latino music blasting. I read a review calling it a “speakeasy,” but honestly, it felt more like a “speak-difficult” – the music was so loud, I could barely hear myself think, let alone have a conversation! 😅

  • Review 5 (2024-12-15 - Rating: 5)

Drinks fantastic, very uniquely mixed.Service and staff splendid and friendlyFinally, the place is a speak easy bar, loved the ambiance and the underground setup.

  • Review 6 (2024-10-03 - Rating: 4)

A speakeasy in the basement of a building behind a coffee shop. A pretty cool concept, but the air is a bit stale and it gets warm when its crowded. The drinks are great. In the bartenders. Theyre very friendly.

  • Review 7 (2024-11-23 - Rating: 5)

Such a unique experience! The coffee shop facade made it seem like it wasnt open, but on closer inspection the door was unlocked and we could see a line formed in the back of the shop. The atmosphere was lovely and made the evening all the more wonderful. The service was amazing and the drinks were expertly crafted. It will take a bit of time for you to get your drink, but for how busy it was in there, I certainly cant complain. For those who enjoy unique cocktails and checking out cool places in the city, this is definitely one to try.

  • Review 8 (2024-03-25 - Rating: 5)

Classic NY speakeasy, we had a great time! Cocktails are very well crafted. The bar is super-interesting, the place feels calm and intimate. Music selection was awesome! We had to wait 30-40 minutes in line to get in, but the guy at the door was very friendly and kept giving us updates (appreciated). Totally recommend it.

  • Review 9 (2024-05-26 - Rating: 4)

Patent Pending was a little speakeasy behind a coffee shop. The location is a little bit pretentious, and the staff didnt seem happy. This drove me to not necessarily enjoy the atmosphere, as it seemed everyone working seemed non-conversational and distant. The cocktails seemed creative, but overall the atmosphere and experience was not what I was looking for. I would imagine if you have company or were not in the mood to be social this place would work for you. Also on a side note there is a 90 minute limit, and to be seated your whole party must be present.

  • Review 10 (2024-10-31 - Rating: 4)

Ok, so from a speakeasy perspective it was kind of cool. Interesting drink menu, cool vibe. Inside a coffee shop, not hard to find if you know what you are looking for. Not cheap for a cocktail though even by NYC standards

  • Review 11 (2024-12-25 - Rating: 5)

Lovely speakeasy hidden behind a coffee shop with an amazing selection of cocktails, especially the wide variety of gin cocktails, a rare occurrence in American bars.

  • Review 12 (2024-09-17 - Rating: 5)

Amazing place !! From the location to the design on the menu and the drinks. Everything is amazing! The best speak easy in NY

  • Review 13 (2024-11-17 - Rating: 5)

Was there this past Saturday night and my server was amazing. She went out of her way to make my night amazing. We had a great table with my friends. The drinks were great and the music was fun. I believe her name was Victoria. Thank you again.

  • Review 14 (2024-09-25 - Rating: 5)

Tucked away behind a tiny coffee shop, this iconic Tiki Culture forward speakeasy just blows us away every time. A wide variety of seating options make for a different vibe each time we visit. Their menu is intellectually brilliant and supplies one with the widest variety of choices I can think of outside of The Dead Rabbit. Their team are incredibly talented and are eager to assist you in learning how to navigate their offerings as well. Absolutely love this establishment. Its great for small to mid size groups of no more than 6.

  • Review 15 (2024-09-13 - Rating: 5)

Nice looking place. clean. staff was friendly.Had the Strange Magic, the Impossible Idea (aged barrel) and a Grilled Cheese (Muenster and one other) with a creamy Tomato Soup. The drinks were smooth and well balanced. great taste and this is coming from a guy that doesnt drink often or consider himself a connoisseur. the grilled cheese was great. cheese was melted just right, bread was also just right. The Tomato soup was FANTASTIC. Perfect. The staff was great, polite, explained drinks and were generally great to have around.Good marks all around. It aint cheap but not absurdly priced. I think its worth the price to come down here once in a while.Excellent.

  • Review 16 (2024-12-04 - Rating: 5)

Exactly the place we were looking for on a cold night after a Knicks game. Old-world aesthetics, it felt like it was 1920 again! And the service and cocktails were absolutely fantastic. I also tried a non-alcoholic cocktail and it was the best I’ve ever had.

  • Review 17 (2023-11-26 - Rating: 5)

Cute little speakeasy bar behind a coffee shop. It is inspired from the origins of Tesla and the drinks reflect that. Loved the spread of drinks on the menu. We tried a few AC/DC, made of memory, illuminating in the sky, some other mezcal based ones as well. All the drinks were good, vibrant and refreshing. Surely will recommend going here. Food menu is limited. Grilled cheese with soup was good.

  • Review 18 (2022-09-25 - Rating: 5)

Definitely the best cocktail bar I have ever been to. The ambience is mesmerizing, giving the extreme feel of a speakeasy. Located in the Tesla building where he had his famous patent experiments, the place holds a historic importance. It has the best menu that I have ever seen, detailing how each cocktail is made, what it would taste like and how it would look. The menu is detailed and gives a hand written feel with a distinct calligraphy. The cocktails were amazing and had a great layers of taste and texture. It is a must visit. The wait times can be crazy but it is worth the wait.

  • Review 19 (2024-05-26 - Rating: 5)

Patent Pending has been an absolute gem during my visits over the past few weeks. The atmosphere is inviting, and the service is outstanding. A special thank you to Ray and Ginger for making each visit a fantastic experience. Your pleasant service and exceptional care truly set this bar apart. Cant wait to come back!I highly recommend everyone try their signature cocktail, Impossible Idea—its a must-have!

  • Review 20 (2024-08-11 - Rating: 4)

I wouldn’t say speakeasy but definitely hidden behind a coffee shop! Could be a casual date night spot. If they were selling their menus I would take it!

  • Review 21 (2022-04-04 - Rating: 5)

Small speakeasy serving incredibly well-designed drinks. Visited on a Sunday and waited about 45 minutes for a table for two which didn’t seem too bad. The drinks were surprisingly balanced and seriously creative. Good vibe and lots of cocktails to choose from. Bonus points for the bar’s harkening back to the building’s Tesla history! You access the speakeasy entrance through a wall in the coffee shop. The shop looks dark but just push the front door open and you’ll find your way.

  • Review 22 (2024-09-01 - Rating: 5)

Patent Pending in New York City is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar hidden behind a coffee shop, located in the historic Radio Wave Building where Nikola Tesla once lived. This unique setting provides a perfect backdrop for the bars theme, which is a homage to Tesla’s life and work. The interior is a blend of industrial and minimalist design, with subtle nods to Tesla’s eccentricities, including a stuffed pigeon—a quirky detail linked to Teslas rumored affection for pigeons. The bar’s atmosphere is intimate and moody, adding to the secretive, speakeasy vibe.Patent Pendings cocktails are creative and expertly crafted, with a menu designed like engineering sketches. The Light Me Up” combining bourbon, rum, and pineapple was my favorite.

  • Review 23 (2024-04-24 - Rating: 5)

I absolutely love this speakeasy. It’s one of my favorite ones. I love the vibe inside and the story behind all the cocktails. This is based on teslas journal and I love that each of the drinks is almost an engineering twist to it. The theme is great. The bartenders are really fun. I’ve tried so many drinks here and loved each one! I appreciate that they don’t want it to be crowded so they only let in a Few people at a a time. But keep in mind there will be a wait since it’s only walk ina

  • Review 24 (2021-08-24 - Rating: 5)

A small Speakeasy with very fun theme. The cocktails were all great. The menu is built around flavours, so youre bound to find a range of drinks youll like. The bartenders are also very helpful and personalized a drink for me to suit my tastes

  • Review 25 (2023-10-10 - Rating: 4)

Went on a Monday evening as a party of two. Its a speakeasy so it not very obvious to find but the discreet entrance is bang on. Its low light place good for hanging out with friends with great drinks. A lot of date couples were present as well. Food menu is only finger foods.

  • Review 26 (2024-10-26 - Rating: 4)

Fun and intimate spot for creative cocktails! Especially enjoyed the Hit By A Taxi drink, but really liked all of them. Would recommend ideally for 2-4 people.

  • Review 27 (2018-02-05 - Rating: 5)

Great new speakeasy with a nice take on Nikola Tesla’s nook—yes, Tesla was a resident of the place and it is neatly decorated and has a pigeon sighting (behind the bar). Tesla fans will know the significance of the pigeon. The speakeasy is hidden behind a coffee shop—a nice front from a speakeasy, please don’t be fooled by the walk down in to the coffee bar.The craft cocktail game was on point and their service was a bit slow at the beginning since it was a brand new spot, however, having said that, the host, Coy, was superb, and delivered with flying colors. We actually spent my wife’s birthday and were rewarded with a bottle of Prosecco. We were a tab bit disappointed that they ran out of the cocktails that we wanted, but, the expert mixologist, Kat, was kind enough to make their replacement and it was a delight! This is a great place and has a tremendous upswing to its potential. Great cocktail ideas are on the menu, and hopefully, they will keep reinventing their eclectic menu/drinks.Highly recommend Patent Pending!

  • Review 28 (2022-10-11 - Rating: 5)

Lovely menu design. Very good cocktail for all spirit lovers. Around 45 min wait in line at Sunday late evening (10pm).They dont allow wait-list or reservations. Last seating 11pm.

  • Review 29 (2023-12-21 - Rating: 4)

This place is hidden inside a coffee shop and is pretty dark environment the music is good but has a long wait time if you don’t have a reservation plus it has drinks starting from $21 and limited beer options..it’s a experience to visit this place as it’s a speakeasy..but the cocktails are really good..

  • Review 30 (2023-03-04 - Rating: 5)

This was one of the best experiences! The drinks are absolutely incredible and the menu is so cool I just kept rereading it the whole time I was there. If you like tropical drinks, definitely try the currents and coils. We went on a Monday night shortly after it opened and it was empty. I’ve heard on weekends, there’s a line down the block. You need to go through Patent Coffee and the host will meet you there. The coffee place will be closed with all the lights off but just open the door and you’ll be fine lol.

  • Review 31 (2024-09-04 - Rating: 5)

Had an amazing experience! Went on a date here and we both loved the atmosphere as well as our server! (I think her name was Tori). Super attentive and sweet. Definitely recommend

  • Review 32 (2018-03-12 - Rating: 4)

It’s a speakeasy with outdoors of a coffee shop which you could easily miss. We were able to get in after almost an hour wait, so do ensure to make your reservations. The hostess is friendly and you need a passcode to get in (sort of).The bar is themed after Nikola Tesla and we enjoyed the ambience. It’s really dark but cozy. We had the Currents and Coils which I would highly recommend. Other cocktails were great as well. The staff is friendly and attentive.Overall had a very good experience and definitely coming back to try other drinks on their menu.

  • Review 33 (2022-05-20 - Rating: 5)

Absolutely adore this place. Our waitress, Alex, as incredible and when prompted to serve me the best drink on the menu, she absolutely delivered. This may well have been the best cocktail Ive ever had. The vibe from the menus to the lighting and the wild drinks coming out in a Beauty and the Beast style display was tops. Love everything about this place and will definitely be back!

  • Review 34 (2021-08-27 - Rating: 5)

Loved this speakeasy! Gets pretty packed upon opening so try to get there early if you want a seat. The drinks are awesome and very creative. I was especially impressed with the drink menu as it looks handwritten and there are drawings of the drinks next to their descriptions. The bartenders are very cool and informative. I loved the decor and the atmosphere. It felt like I was at an exclusive secretive spot. Will definitely return!

  • Review 35 (2024-06-13 - Rating: 5)

One of our favorite cocktail bars in the city! I really enjoy the electric/scientific aesthetic, perfect for the building where Nikola Tesla lived. My fave is odd love, definitely consider splurging for the barrel aged! The impossible idea is a strong second, and makes for a great show ans snack with the browned bananas. On sweeter side is AC/DC. But honestly, all worth checking out!

  • Review 36 (2021-12-27 - Rating: 5)

Swanky Chelsea speakeasy. Great music and great vibes. Hard to get into and expect a wait. But delicious cocktails and awesome ambiance.Recommend for dates or small groups!

  • Review 37 (2023-11-18 - Rating: 5)

Very cool speakeasy that is best visited right as they open to skip the line. Drinks are very unique and delicious but the food was overpriced and not that interesting (we had the deviled eggs). Service is very helpful and friendly.

  • Review 38 (2022-07-15 - Rating: 5)

Cute speakeasy. To get in, you have to walk through the coffee shop. The booklet menu modeled after a patent book was a great touch. Drinks were creative and delicious - my drink had flambed bananas as a side, which made for a great snack.

  • Review 39 (2024-10-13 - Rating: 4)

If there’s a long wait, not worth it. One of many solid speakeasy type bars around. Did not find the cocktails or food memorable.

  • Review 40 (2024-09-10 - Rating: 5)

Patent Pending is a speakeasy-style bar located behind a coffee shop in New York City’s Flatiron District, with a theme inspired by Nikola Tesla. The bars decor and drink menu pay homage to Tesla’s legacy of innovation, combining the atmosphere of a science lab with a moody, intimate setting. For Tesla enthusiasts or anyone who enjoys creative drinks in a unique setting, Patent Pending offers an experience that merges history, science, and modern mixology.

  • Review 41 (2023-10-12 - Rating: 5)

Love this speakeasy!!! For all the engineers and Nikola Tesla fans in all of us, this is one helluva spot with crazy unique (and somewhat pricey) cocktails!

  • Review 42 (2019-05-12 - Rating: 5)

Tucked away behind Parent Pending Coffee, this unpretentious speakeasy welcomes all. No password is required. Menus are appropriately themed (you can buy one, too!). Drinks are strong and if you are lucky, then you will sit at the bar and watch the masters at work.

  • Review 43 (2021-12-21 - Rating: 5)

Amazing speakeasy vibes! Entering by the candlelit closed-up coffee shop is pretty cool. This place has a great selection of cocktails, and the staff are super helpful and friendly. Managed to get a table for 2 in a booth around 18:30 on a Monday.

  • Review 44 (2018-12-14 - Rating: 5)

This place is awesome. Amazing atmosphere and friendly staff. Drinks were unique enough to be different from most bars weve been to, without being so far out there youre afraid to try them. Well worth a trip if youre anywhere near the area. Hope to get back there one day!

  • Review 45 (2022-05-24 - Rating: 5)

We took my sister here for her 21st birthday. She really wanted to visit a speakeasy and this did not disappoint! Our server was Alex and she was extremely attentive and accommodating to our group of 4. Entering through a darkened coffee shop was cool, and the Nikola Tesla themed drinks added to the vibe of the bar. Drinks were pricey but excellent! My favorite was the Electrostatic Evening! Birthday girl got the Strange Magic. It was an excellent start to the evening!

  • Review 46 (2021-08-15 - Rating: 5)

This secret bar is top notch and we are so thankful we were able to get in without a reservation. Everything is themes off of the famous inventor Nikola Tesla who lived in the same building and it was a very cool night. The menu was the coolest, best thought out menu I have ever seen and the drinks followed it up. We sat there for hours watching the master bartender work his magic!

  • Review 47 (2022-05-16 - Rating: 4)

The place is very nice and drinks are good. But when we pay, the waitress didnt remind us that 20% tip has already been included, so we tipped on top of that.

  • Review 48 (2022-07-23 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic little speakeasy bar. We didn’t have a reservation but were able to snag a booth! Cocktails were lovely, vibes were great, cutest menu.

  • Review 49 (2024-03-24 - Rating: 4)

Finally made it here. I generally dont like standing on lines. We waited about 45 minutes or more. They do 90 minute settings. The staff was very friendly at the door and kept updating everyone on the wait. When it was our turn , they even moved us in to like a waiting area near the main bar to start looking at the menu and order. We sat down inside the black bar lounge area. The service was really good. We only had one drink each as their kitchen had just closed and we were hungry so left after one.. Our server was very kind and got us a bunch of bar nuts. The menu is a very cool design. I was told folks have been stealing it.The dirnks we ordered were good..didnt wow us. The vibe and atmosphere is definitely on point.Nobel Slight was good and little spirit forward. Into the realm was little too much of a taste of orange soda.I will come back again but wont wait on line

  • Review 50 (2024-06-21 - Rating: 5)

Great drinks and atmosphere. Prepare yourself to spend $$$!!

  • Review 51 (2019-01-21 - Rating: 5)

Cocktails are great! Atmosphere is so heavy and vibe-inducing it is distracting, I dig it but turn it down to 8? Will go again when I town.

  • Review 52 (2022-03-14 - Rating: 5)

Such a great place, ordered #1, which was a great and refreshing drink, on the sweet side. Almost missed the spot, it’s behind a coffee shop, highly recommend going for a drink!

  • Review 53 (2019-11-08 - Rating: 5)

One would never suspect there is a bar hidden behind the walls of a cafe! When the doors to the bar opened, it felt like I was being invited to some magical land lol 😂I was going for non-alcoholic options and because the menu did not explicitly have non-alcoholic beverages, the bartender simply substituted the alcohol with something else so I could still enjoy all the flavors offered there.

  • Review 54 (2024-11-08 - Rating: 5)

A hidden gem, speakeasy with food and upscale drinks. Perfect for a date, get together, or just solo chill.

  • Review 55 (2024-10-05 - Rating: 5)

    Tasty drinks! Perfect ambience.

  • Review 56 (2024-04-01 - Rating: 5)

I was fortunate enough to have visited Patent pending twice, once during the pandemic and again on Easter Sunday, without any wait times. This speakeasy has become one of my favorite cocktail lounges. The reservation process, via Resy, allows for a 3-course experience, while the cocktail-only option is first-come, first-served. The menu is quite intriguing, so its best to ask the server for recommendations based on your palate.

  • Review 57 (2022-04-25 - Rating: 5)

Arguably the best cocktails in the city. Clever and beautifully executed theme. Nikolai and staff developed an incredible menu. Knowledgable mixologists. Creative, next-level cocktails.Science Fiction Factor - Sensational cocktail. Played with activating different parts of the tongue and had an evolving flavor in each sip but also as it became diluted from the ice over time. Impressive use of Fernet in which it was a supporting act that still contributed uniquely. Dutch Genever and Urfa Biber made the drink captivating.Radio Waves - Incredible medley of spirits without it being too spirit forward. Thai chile thoughtfully selected to more properly match and create distinction from the supporting ingredients. As always, remember everyone has off days, check your bias, and consider other palates.

  • Review 58 (2021-11-05 - Rating: 5)

For some this might be old news. As this is a speakeasy. But still, if you cannot find the entrance in the evening: the coffee shop “seems closed”. But just open the door, it is open. The waiter will bring you to the back where the actual bar is. I had a great time, went back a second time which was also pleasant.Make a reservation for a table.

  • Review 59 (2022-10-12 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite bars in New York. The drinks are fabulous and the service exceptional. I almost dont want to review this place to keep it from getting too crowded. Its awesome!!!

  • Review 60 (2023-12-31 - Rating: 5)

Oh my gosh I loved it here. COME!!!! But also my boyfriend is in IP law so we were a little more excited to be here but either way YOU’RE GOING TO FREAKING LOVE IT.the drinks are great. Every single time we asked to be “surprised”. Every. Thing. Was. So. Good.Didn’t try food - but I can get it’s not too shabby !!Our server Jodi was great and honestly made our whole experience 10x better. We WILL BE BACK WHEN WE COME TO NYC AGAIN! 😊

  • Review 61 (2024-11-20 - Rating: 5)

What a fun little bar! Everything is Tesla-themed (the inventor, not the car company). Victoria took great care of our group and presented their signature drink flawlessly! There was rum, fire, and bananas. We shared a bunch of drinks, and they were fantastic. Highly recommend this place!

  • Review 62 (2024-06-28 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 64 (2019-02-14 - Rating: 5)

Great little secret hiding behind a coffee shop. Loved the atmosphere, the service and the cocktails. Would highly recommend to small groups of 2 to 4. Place is tight but perfect for a group of 4.

  • Review 65 (2024-01-09 - Rating: 5)

Super cool place to hang out with friends. It’s New York City ‘tight’ but if you’re into that then it’s no problem. The music and staff were all amazing. Only gripe no coffee or baileys type drinks!

  • Review 66 (2024-04-15 - Rating: 4)

Cute little cocktail spot.Service is a little slow but to be expected for a cocktail place? If you are a fan of mezcal based cocktails, definitely try the Nobel Slight. It was delicious.

  • Review 67 (2022-07-03 - Rating: 5)

We were a party of 4 and only had to wait for about 20min. This bar is dimly lit, all the staff were extremely helpful, drinks were all so different so definitely can’t go wrong with anything you order.

  • Review 68 (2024-07-07 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 69 (2021-07-25 - Rating: 5)

Brilliant theme, beautiful atmosphere, the drinks are pieces of art. 10/10 would recommend

  • Review 70 (2024-12-24 - Rating: 5)

Delicious cocktails worth the wait to get in.

  • Review 71 (2023-02-19 - Rating: 5)

Lovely place for a night out! Enjoyed the cocktails and the friendly service. The ambience was dim but the music was fun. It wasnt too loud so you could still have a great conversation. Be prepared to wait in line.

  • Review 72 (2024-04-07 - Rating: 5)

Had a good time, a bit of a wait but expected. The bartender was communicative, and I loved the presentation of the menu down to the assortment of mixology tools on the counter. Would love to come back!

  • Review 73 (2023-07-18 - Rating: 4)

Pretty cool place , drinks are great and the fried chicken sandwich really excited my expectations. This place is on the smaller side so it fills up quickly. Id recommend making a reservation.Reason why I gave service a low rating is because they ended up billing me twice . I came back in to get it resolved and they were super friendly . But it is still not resolved and it is an annoyance that I should not be dealing with right now . At the time I was there , When I paid , it took them forever to give me my card back. Usually I don’t ask for receipt but since it took so long I said to myself “ I think something is gonna happen so I better keep my receipt” good thing I did .

  • Review 74 (2023-09-20 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite spots in the city! Such a unique and fun atmosphere. This is my go-to spot to take friends who are visiting NYC. Its a great speak-easy with delicious drinks and a really fun atmosphere!

  • Review 75 (2022-10-20 - Rating: 4)

Tasty, well made cocktails. Small, intimate setting. Pleasant staff. Clever concept that lacks ambience once inside.

  • Review 76 (2024-12-18 - Rating: 5)

    The best

  • Review 77 (2024-03-17 - Rating: 5)

Beautiful dimly lit underground speakeasy. The place is a lot bigger than it first seems, with a nice alley like appearance. The Impossible Idea is one of the best takes on an old fashioned (it includes carmelized bananas) Quite pricey for a cocktail though - 33 dollars for a simple (but elegant twist) on a basic drink.

  • Review 78 (2022-09-01 - Rating: 5)

Very fun late night experience, interesting drinks, friendly staff. The indoor temperature was a little steamy...our group was praying for people to walk by to kick up a breeze it was so hot in there. Prepare to spend some hard earned dough...drinks were $20+. That being said, it was obvious a lot of thought and bartender labor went into each cocktail. My favorite detail was the tie in to Nikola Tesla - allusions in almost every aspect of the location and menu. A clever nod to history!

  • Review 79 (2018-11-12 - Rating: 5)

I made sure I got there at 5 so waiting wasn’t an issue. Grilled cheese was awesome. Place is setup really cool, host was a good dude and Greg is probably the most talented bartender I’ve ever had. Extremely quick and efficient and he’s not making your typical regular cocktails. Told him very vaguely what I was looking for taste wise and without hesitation made the perfect drink with some good spices and garnishes you don’t normally find elsewhere. A+ joint

  • Review 80 (2022-05-12 - Rating: 5)

Great speak easy type cocktail bar hidden behind a trap door. You need to make reservations so the hostess knows your coming. Its a smaller lounge, but is super cool. I made the mistake of reserving the first booth on the right as you enter the trap door and the speaker that cranks music to the entire lounge was over our head.

  • Review 81 (2024-12-21 - Rating: 4)

Nikolai Tesla themed speakeasy in the back of a coffee shop. Seating is first come first serve. Good cocktails, good food and a cool ambiance.

  • Review 82 (2021-12-19 - Rating: 5)

Definitely what we were hoping for! At first youd think we were at the wrong place, but then it wouldnt be a speakeasy right? We entered through a small coffee shop, lights were all off inside, semi-dark, quiet, just waiting to enter through the back wall that was partially cracked open! found about 3 groups of people waiting to enter, waited for about 30 minutes, but was WELL WORTH IT! The bartenders were shorthanded by 2 so that was why the wait was long. Once entered, youll come across the first section with a long bar on the left seating about 6-8 people and 3-4 small tables on the right, then into another corridor with another bar seating another 6-8 people and multiple seating options, 1 large table and multiple couch seating. Absolutely chill vibes, music was excellent, would probably say its a mix of jazz or trance, hard to explain, but worked very well with the ambiance. The drinks were very detailed, had explanations of their history and how they were created, extremely tasty, and very dangerous! Lol.

  • Review 83 (2024-08-13 - Rating: 5)

Victoria was awesome! Patent pending had an incredible vibe, with intimate lighting, perfect music, and an unforgettable menu. The drinks were amazing, and the whole concept of the bar was spot-on. Victorias kindness and coolness made the night even better. Well definitely be back! I highly highly recommend for anyone either visiting NYC or local!

  • Review 84 (2024-09-10 - Rating: 5)

Creative cocktails with a larger selection on their main menu than most other cocktail bars in NYC. In addition they have a rotating menu of specials.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a true craft cocktail experience in NYC, and its kind of fun entering through the back wall of the coffee shop.If you see a line inside, dont get discouraged, it moves relatively quickly. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and staff are great and accommodating.

  • Review 87 (2024-10-11 - Rating: 5)

What a great bar. Got there right at opening and had a well made drink by a very personable set of bartenders. Well worth a visit.

  • Review 88 (2021-10-23 - Rating: 5)

This Nikola Tesla inspired speakeasy does not disappoint. We came for one drink and stayed for four. Every cocktail included unique ingredients and depth of flavor. It’s worth spending the time to read every part of the menu and how it pulls from Tesla’s life. The service is top notch. Gabby waited on us: she has impeccable service skills & good vibes. She and the other staff elevated the evening. 10/10. Will return!

Cool low lit bar. seating by host only, 50 max. staff was friendly, bartender engaging. great atmosphere and could easily carry on a conversation. the menu design was inventive... you’ll want to take the time to read the footnotes! thoughtful end-to-end experience. the fried chicken sandwich was also good.

  • Review 90 (2023-12-28 - Rating: 5)

Great speakeasy experience. You walk through the coffee shop to realise a big yet cozy bar setup behind the walls. The drinks are very innovative and yum! You cant go wrong. Loved spending time reading their menu its worth a read as they pay homage to N Tesla.

  • Review 91 (2024-11-10 - Rating: 5)

Super chill, speak easy style bar. Staff was super conversational and kind which made the experience even better!

  • Review 92 (2022-04-28 - Rating: 4)

Fun little bar with lots of drink options. The decor is really neat but the music seems a bit off for the mood. Great cocktails and variety but getting in could be a better streamlined process. Be prepared to wait a while.

  • Review 93 (2019-05-12 - Rating: 5)

Long wait times but totally worth it. Amazing ambience. Had a good time. Very friendly waitress. We tried the cocktails: currents and coils, chicago years, from your memory. From your memory was my favorite with hint of orange and it is a cocktail thats served hot. Yummy grilled sandwiches for casual/light munching.

  • Review 94 (2024-09-08 - Rating: 5)

I loved this place!! I came last Saturday for my birthday with a friend and we loved the vibe as soon as I was seated! Victoria, the girl with blonde hair was sooo sweet and made me feel so special even though the bar was packed and she was busy!!!! She checked up on my friend and I so much and recommended the best drinks after learning what we like. The bartenders, Max and Ginger, gave us our drinks really quickly and they made the atmosphere behind the bar so fun!!! I’m more of a fruity drink person but I would totally come back to the bar just for the amazing service there! They know what they’re doing…

  • Review 95 (2018-02-03 - Rating: 5)

Awesome cocktails. Really special drinks (even familiar pairings are executed in new and surprising ways) — I definitely recommend Radio Waves and Light Me Up. Very busy right now with just having opened but great service too! Overall, a beautiful place to enjoy some top notch cocktails!

  • Review 96 (2020-11-05 - Rating: 5)

While the cocktail spot is great too, this review is for the coffee shop. Outside of making really delicious drinks, everyone that works here is always so kind and calm (and remember you!). Its always such a delight to start with a morning coffee from here!

  • Review 97 (2024-08-22 - Rating: 5)

Its a nice little cozy place with some really cool cocktail options and very delicious food. The Korean fried chicken sandwich was amazing! I also really enjoyed the odd love cocktail.

  • Review 98 (2022-04-03 - Rating: 5)

Good vibes speakeasy with a pretty cool theme and some amazing cocktails. Tried The Science fiction facto, Noble Slight, Impossible Idea, Hit by a Taxi - I loved them in that order. Be ready to wait if youre trying to get in on busy days. We went at 5:20PM on a Saturday and had to wait for 30mins to get in. No complaints though.

  • Review 99 (2021-10-20 - Rating: 4)

Generally I have a great experience here with great cocktails but the service last time was impossibly slow even when the crowd was dying down on a week night. Not all staff here are equal, some of them cant even remember the drinks we ordered, multiple times in a night 🤷🏼‍♂️ others are great. Hope they can sort this out next time I come.

  • Review 100 (2021-11-03 - Rating: 5)

One of the best speakeasy-esque bars in NYC. Very inventive and tasty drinks based with a nod to Nikolai Tesla who lived in the building. Have been several times and always a delight. Food options, while limited, are also great.

  • Review 101 (2022-09-25 - Rating: 5)

Excellent cocktails. There is a line so you should expect to wait unless you get there at opening time. We liked the outside bar seating better than the second bar inside.

  • Review 102 (2019-03-28 - Rating: 5)

Visited this gem on our last trip to NYC and it was even better than expected. How many years have I been walking by this place without realizing there was an amazing bar tucked behind the coffee shop?! The drinks are creative and well executed. The bar is small though so I recommend getting there right at 5 so you dont have to wait for a seat.

  • Review 103 (2022-04-12 - Rating: 5)

My first speakeasy experience. A local friend took me there and being a New York history buff, I was sold on merely the idea of a prohibiton era bar. What was an added delight was the drinks. The bartender, Alex, was on top of his game. We had the pleasure of being seated at the bar so we saw him crafting not just ours but several other drinks as well. The dim lighting, the purposely torn rusty menu and the old lightbulb styled syrup containers just add to the whole vibe. Great experience.

  • Review 104 (2019-12-02 - Rating: 5)

This is an amazing speakeasy cocktail bar. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and will help out with suggestions based on what you like, and Ive never had anything that wasnt amazing. The ambience is cozy and intimate and a great place to wind down.

  • Review 105 (2022-11-15 - Rating: 4)

Drinks are pricey, but fun and tasty. Its a very dark and small space. I understand theyre going for intimate, but its a little extreme. Staff were very nice as well.

  • Review 106 (2023-07-27 - Rating: 5)

It’s just a coffee shop obviously closed at 10pm… or is it? Nope, the coffee shop is a front for the speakeasy at the back where they served us some interesting cocktails that were so complex… I forgot their names

  • Review 107 (2021-04-01 - Rating: 4)

Addendum 4/1: I emailed and texted the bar a week after our visit, having not received a refund as promised. I immediately received a follow-up message from a representative of the bar, stating that the original refund did not go through because the individual facilitating the refund had their phone stolen and was unable to process the refund or contact me. The representative apologized for the delay and refunded the entire amount (which included the $100 overcharge). I am therefore editing my review to accurately reflect our experience that night, as well as the circumstances which mediated our follow-up experience. I appreciated the diligent follow-up and the full refund, though would have liked to see more professionalism in communication: The language I received made me feel badly about my honest review. In addition, given that stolen/lost phones are an inevitable reality of the world we live in, perhaps this enterprise should integrate other back-up mechanisms to ensure quality customer service, especially when it comes to refunding an overcharge.Original review:My husband and I made reservations for 2 for indoor seating. The hostess and bartender were great, as was the music. Unfortunately, the service was a little slow and 90 minutes into our time there we had only been served one of the snacks and had just ordered our second drink. We left without having ordered our third drink. In addition, we were overcharged by over $100. The person who initially billed us promised a refund by the next day - it has been one week since our visit, and we still have not received the money back. This is unfortunate. While the cocktails were decent, and the service was not bad, it is poor form and customer service to not rectify a billing error and leaving the customer with an outsized charge. Four cocktails and one cheeseplate do not equal $300.

Gorgeous cocktail bar inside Patent Coffee. Beautiful menu and great spirit list. Cocktails are solid and well made but seem a bit generic. Would like to be able to spend more time here to get a better feel for the place. Only 1 visit.

  • Review 110 (2023-02-12 - Rating: 5)

Did the tasting menu. What a lovely experience. The things they can do with alcohol is truly an art. I didnt know I could love whiskey. Small, intimate setting is also great.

  • Review 111 (2021-07-15 - Rating: 5)

For starters, the location is a welcoming secret. Hidden, but not hidden enough to turn you away. The cocktails were sophisticated and meticulously crafted . The servers were knowledgeable and attentive, one even came over and took the time to explain the history behind the brand and menu in intricate detail. 10/10 would recommend.

  • Review 112 (2021-03-31 - Rating: 5)

Right when I first walked into this place, I knew it immdiately that I would revisit once more for that unique experience. A greatly researched cocktails with interesting tastes and great foods to colorfully design your tasteful journey. I really love what they did with the entrance, because I honestly thought I just needed to order coffee for take out an get out😂 Highly recommended!

This newcomer just entered my top 5 cocktail bars in NYC. Great service, amazing drinks. Cant go wrong ordering here. Even went off the menu and they definitely deliver. Plan on coming back often.

  • Review 115 (2023-12-17 - Rating: 4)

Had to wait to get in but I appreciated that they seat you rather than packing the place up and making you stand around like sardines. Cocktails were between ~$21-$34 dollars which is insane but expected. I think my drink was called the strange magic and it was very good. Definitely more of a date vibe than a friend vibe in my opinion but nonetheless had a great time with my friend.

  • Review 116 (2018-02-03 - Rating: 5)

Such an incredible night spent here. The cocktails are amazing and the service is top notch. I highly recommend the Strange Magic and Radio Waves as both of these are exceptionally made and extremely tasty. Will definitely make this a regular stop after a work!

  • Review 119 (2023-01-11 - Rating: 5)

Had an incredible time here. An easy 15 minute walk from Moynihan, perfect for grabbing a few drinks before a train. I went on a Tuesday around 6 and was able to get a seat at the bar no issue. Definitely picked up around 6:30/7 though and quickly became crowded.I tried 3 drinks off their seasonal menu and was super impressed. They were absolutely delicious, well worth the cost, and the bartenders did an amazing job keeping the orders going. The wait staff was super attentive as well, always ensuring I had a glass filled. This is also the first high end bar in NYC thats been able to do a good fried chicken sandwich. While light on the spice, the chicken was incredibly juicy.Awesome speakeasy vibes, loved the decor, definitely an intimate venu. Would highly recommend!

  • Review 120 (2020-01-20 - Rating: 4)

The drinks are awesome, and the vibe isb really cool. Be prepared to get on a list, though, and have to come back later. Also, when they let you in, you dont get a seat right away. You need to wait in a little foyer area thats kind of cold and dark until a space opens up. Bartenders know what theyre doing

  • Review 121 (2018-11-13 - Rating: 5)

Fun cocktail bar/speakeasy! Be prepared to wait but the inside is very neat with a nod to Tesla. The menu is unique and well-thought out and the drinks are amazing (about $14/cocktail).

  • Review 125 (2018-05-27 - Rating: 4)

Very well made drinks. Decor is standard for a speakeasy type place. Staff could be a bit nicer. Maybe if they didnt take themselves so seriously?A place where 4 people to a booth means only 4 people in a booth or get yelled at when someone stops to say hi as they walk past your booth.

  • Review 126 (2018-05-06 - Rating: 5)

Loved it! A brand new place thats up there among the best cocktail places in the city. Prefectly balanced drinks and strong to boot! New Yorkers, enjoy this before Google puts this place on the world map and becomes a tourist destination.

It was a little hard to find the place as it is hidden inside a coffee shop. I did not make any reservations but got lucky as I went there early on a week day. The bartender was very attentive and suggested some great cocktails. They are very creative with their drinks and menu and made sure I liked my drink. My drinks were probably the best cocktails I’ve had in the city. Patent Pending is definitely my top fav bar and I bet you can’t go wrong with their drinks. Must visit!! 10/10

In the tradition of speakeasy-concept fancy cocktail joints the hyper-professional staff and efficient but expert service make this an impressive date spot and unique after-dinner attraction in the already-dense Flatiron drink scene. The Nikola Tesla theme is surprisingly well executed, understated while still woven into every design and menu element.

Must do! This was a cool stop with some history. Drinks were great and on historical theme. I would highly recommend this stop. The vibe off the top wasnt great as we had someone complaining that there were there before us, making a scene and making everyone uncomfortable. The hostess left us to hash it out which really didnt seem appropriate. We ended up letting them in front of us to ease the tension for everyone. There wasnt even acknowledgement from the staff. The situation could have been handled better for sure. Either way, after dealing with that, it was smooth sailing.

Im a big admirer of Nicola Tesla, so enjoyed the themes running through this secret beyond the coffee shop. The queues were out the door when I visited in November but I came back later in the evening and walked right in.Many people are visiting the bar next door wondering why people are going into the lights out coffee shop. And its worth the wonder.Once inside youre met with a cool secret interior and mixologists that are passionate about their cocktails. I tried the seasonal winter cocktail that featured marshmallow and port. And it was strong. The manager was very friendly and shared his interest in whisky and other cocktail bars with me.

Hidden behind a coffee shop, this high-end cocktail bar offers complex and inventive cocktails in an industrial-chic space. The menu is beautifully designed, featuring playful twists on classic cocktails and inventive flavor combinations like Fuji apple juice with tequila and nutmeg. Be advised that the small bar fills up quickly and it’s a first come, first served operation with no waitlist.
