Absolutely fantastic cocktail bar. Everyone, from the hostess to the woman at (free) coat check to the bartenders and the servers was welcoming and friendly (that is not a given for this area). I went with a friend I hadn’t seen in years and enjoyed 2 cocktails with awesome flavors. We stayed talking for a while and didn’t get rushed out or side eyed. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated without a reservation and once we got in, we were treated very well. I loved the atmosphere: velvet chairs and great music, but nothing was too loud and it was easy to have a conversation. I will definitely be back! -

Raines masterfully evokes the spirit of a bygone era, creating an undeniably captivating speakeasy atmosphere. Stepping inside, youre immediately greeted by exceptional cocktails and friendly, knowledgeable staff. The cocktail menu is extensive, offering a diverse selection to suit every palate. And if youre feeling adventurous, dont hesitate to ask the bartender for their personal recommendation – you might just discover a hidden gem -

This bar offers the quintessential NYC speakeasy experience and is an absolute must-visit! To get in, you ring a bell as you descend to the basement of an unmarked building. Once inside, youll find a cozy, intimate atmosphere with dim lighting and plenty of comfortable seating, perfect for groups. The cocktails are outstanding—each one as delicious as the next. The menu features an impressive variety of unique drinks, and the bartenders are more than happy to craft custom creations to suit your tastes. Overall, it’s easily one of the best bars I’ve experienced in New York! -

Raines Law Room is a true classic, renowned for its exceptional charm. Nestled in a cozy, dimly lit sub-level setting adorned with plush sofas and chairs, it boasts an outstanding selection of diverse cocktails. Whether youre planning a romantic date night or simply indulging in a premium cocktail, this spot is a fantastic choice. -

Awesome cocktail bar with very unique cocktails. -
Review 7 (2024-02-26 - Rating: 5)
Raines Law Room in Manhattan is like stepping into a secret club from the Roaring Twenties! The entrance, with its hidden doorbell, makes you feel like youre in on something exclusive and cool.As a person of color, hitting up fancy places in the city can sometimes feel iffy, but Raines Law Room was a breath of fresh air. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, which instantly put me at ease.Inside, the place is decked out with comfy seats and moody lighting. The snacks they serve are just the right match for their wine selection ( which is limited, but they have amazing cocktails).Raines Law Room isnt just a bar; its like time-traveling to a classy, inclusive hangout where youre treated like a VIP. Its an awesome spot in Manhattan thats all about great vibes, good drinks, and making everyone feel at home. Shout out to the host V for good vibes and good energy!! -

It’s nicely decorated, but I do prefer their other location with regard to interior and drinks — I think it’s a preference that varies person to person. Wasn’t a huge fan of the watermelon drink. -

Raines Law Room, wait...what is this? Pleaseeeee the best craft cocktails bar in town, the most beautiful and wonderful cocktails that you can ever had, every time I come they get creative with the menu (honestly this is the best) I got to tried 27 stars and it was a wonderful experience of cachaca, lemon, melon and other wonderful stuff made by Giane and it was delicious and smooth to drink. I got the amazing opportunity to tried the Venders treasure (check it out, if you dont have any allergies to nuts) one of the best variations of old fashioned that I have ever seen by Ben-Z. Please, come in with your best friends and enjoy your stay here. I will be back soon for more :3. Thanks again -

Atmosphere and drinks are fantastic. Waitstaff are friendly! We had a great time! Will absolutely recommend this place to anyone and will be back -
Review 12 (2021-05-25 - Rating: 5)
Great cocktails and prompt and attentive service. I sat outside in one of the cabins, but the indoor space and the secret garden are great options as well. The attention to detail in every one of the drinks here makes it worth the high price tag. -
Review 13 (2019-08-29 - Rating: 5)
We came here after making reservations in advance for a party of 6. Had been meaning to try this speakeasy for a long time. Entrance is with the number and the doorbell had to be pressed to gain entry. We were promptly seated and our booth was very cute. We read up the history about the place in the menu book and had a good learning experience. The curtains added a nice touch to the rooms. We ordered a bunch of cocktails and each one of them was delicious. I tried the midsummer dawn which was delicious. The service was excellent and a unique experience (dont want to give away all the surprises in this review). We had a fun evening and did not feel rushed at all. It gets busy here so reservations are recommended. They do not have space for more than 6 people in a group so if you are a larger group, you will have to be seated separately. Must try if you are around Chelsea area. Bathroom is a must visit...cheeky wallpaper. Had a blast! -
Review 14 (2024-02-22 - Rating: 4)
Nice speakeasy - the drinks are interesting but very expensive, and it feels a bit rushed. The beet juice cocktail (4.5/5) and the lychee cocktail (4/5) were tasty and quite strong. -
Review 15 (2024-09-13 - Rating: 4)
Very dim and moody speakeasy serving up some great cocktails and mocktails. I’ve now tried every mocktail on their menu and they’re all well-balanced, thoughtful, and honestly sometimes my preferred drink over a cocktail. It’s a great spot for date night or for a cosy catch up with close friends. -
Review 16 (2018-08-22 - Rating: 5)
One of the best cocktail bars in the city. The menu has something for everyone including mock tails. Reservations are required and book up quickly so plan in advance. Parties greater than four are difficult. It is not handicap accessible and at times staff can be a bit aloof. -
Review 17 (2021-07-15 - Rating: 5)
Another great hidden bar! Loved the private rooms inside with curtains that close all around with comfy couches and a table inside each one. We had great service (you just pull a cord in your room and they come). The drinks were delicious and we got many drinks :-) We also got the nibble tray and spiced nuts to snack on - also good. Take a good look at the paisley wall paper in the bathroom. -

Raines Law Room is an iconic classic. They offer an absolutely phenomenal array of diverse cocktails in a dimly lit sub-level space full of plush sofas and chairs. They also have an outdoor back yard space if you’d like a little sunlight. A great choice for date night, or if you just want to treat yourself to a top shelf adult beverage. -

Drinks are absolute fire, great ambiance. Super inspired to go makes some cocktails when I get home -
Review 21 (2023-01-24 - Rating: 5)
Went on a Holiday without reservation. Waited outside in the cold for 50 mins, but the drinks were worth the wait. All the cocktails we picked were great. Not too strong like many other cocktail bars. The person who greeted us at the door forgot we were already waiting for 45 mins. The staff was great, very polite and attentive. I would suggest reserving a day or 2ahead on resy. -
Review 22 (2024-11-20 - Rating: 5)
Great vibes, nice old-style speakeasy. Cocktails are good too but it was more about the experience for me. -
Review 23 (2023-04-26 - Rating: 5)
Awesome spot. Paid about $100 for four premium drinks including 20% tip. Bartenders were awesome, and highly skilled. All glasses come pre-chilled, and details are done perfectly. -
Review 24 (2024-04-07 - Rating: 4)

Review 25 (2023-09-28 - Rating: 4)
Great speakeasy for a date night. Love the ambiance & cocktails. Definitely get a reservation beforehand though -
Review 26 (2024-11-24 - Rating: 5)
This place was amazing. We came as a walk in at 9:15 and had no trouble being seated — group of 2. We had a full of gold and year of luck and both were good. Would get both drinks again! Limited things to eat and the food available was expensive for a small portion. -
Review 27 (2019-12-29 - Rating: 5)
One of my favorite speakeasies in the city! Great selection of drinks. Atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. Good spot after a dinner or long day at work. -
Review 28 (2025-01-04 - Rating: 5)
This bar offers the ultimate New York speakeasy experience and is an absolute must-visit! To access it, you ring a bell as you descend to the basement of an unmarked building. Once inside, you’re greeted by a warm, intimate ambiance with soft lighting and plenty of comfortable seating, perfect for groups. The cocktails are exceptional, with each one just as delightful as the previous. The menu boasts an impressive variety of unique drinks, and the skilled bartenders are more than happy to craft custom creations. Overall, it’s easily one of the finest bars I’ve visited in New York. -
Review 29 (2021-12-16 - Rating: 5)
Only good things to say about Raines. Firstly, they’re truly committed to the speakeasy vibe, which makes for such a fun ambiance! Once inside, the cocktails and the staff do not disappoint. There’s a robust list of cocktails to choose from based on your desired spirit. If you choose to order at the bar, you might even be lucky to get the bartender’s choice. -
Review 30 (2021-10-24 - Rating: 5)
Solid spot, for sure. I would recommend pretty much any of their drinks - they’re all great. If you’ve got a bit of an appetite I would recommend the snack plate. It’s a good assortment of charcuterie and other small apps, and it’s just the right amount of food to tie you over for a bit. There were several little things about Raines Law Room that made the vibe stand out from other bars. First, you have to ring the doorbell to speak with the staff. Additionally, the way you order in the outdoor seating was fun (I won’t spoil the surprise, though). Raines is definitely a great spot to switch up your cocktail game! -
Review 31 (2024-09-17 - Rating: 5)
If you’re looking for a place to get cocktails and chill. This is the one. They have a great cocktail. The lounge is very cozy and warm. My favorite cocktail was invisible isle. It’s kind of fruity and sweet. -
Review 32 (2019-07-11 - Rating: 5)
Great cocktails, terrific atmosphere, good service, rather pricey. Cocktails are well crafted with a wide selection (15-20 total). Service is efficient and quick. Go early to ensure you get a spot - if not you may end up waiting quite some time to get in, smaller the group the better. Expect to spend ~$40-50 for 2 for a single cocktail each. Overall would go back. -
Review 33 (2018-04-15 - Rating: 5)
Come here before 5.30pm to secure seats at one of the booths! Ring the doorbell and someone behind it will promptly swing it open and bring you right in. A coat check is also available near the door. The entire establishment is cozy and has the atmosphere of a speakeasy of decades past. I appreciate the fact that the music is quiet enough to have a proper conversation. Our cocktails were incredibly tasty and creative. There was also a neat little gimmick in which you can pull on a chain to request for service.Because its an overall small and intimate space, there will be strangers wholl sit across from you in the booth if youre just a party of two, though youll likely wont be able to hear them. -
Review 34 (2023-12-28 - Rating: 5)
Raines Law Room is a super classy, intimate speakeasy serving up some awesome cocktails. It can get pretty packed so its smart to make a reservation. If my husband and I stop by on a whim and get a table we always feel so lucky. Even if theres a wait, its worth it for a spot at our favorite speakeasy.Once inside, you feel like youre back in the 20s. The menu of cocktails is quite extensive, but is broken up by categories so you can easily find the type of drink youre looking for. As expected, Raines is pricey with drinks costing around $19. However, everything Ive ordered here has been great, and no matter how busy it is, Ive also always had great service. Next to each table is a bell you can ring for your server so you are never without a drink for too long!Raines is a great evening spot when youre looking for a bougie cocktail. -

Review 37 (2019-12-17 - Rating: 5)
My new favorite place! Service was impeccable; all the staff is knowledgeable and attentive. The drinks are unique and taste amazing. Its a calm relaxing atmosphere. Perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and unwind. -
Review 38 (2024-07-13 - Rating: 5)
A speakeasy thats both posh and comfy. Inventive cocktails and some great side nibbles like salmon spread and Australian feta. -
Review 39 (2022-02-27 - Rating: 5)
One of the best bars I’ve ever been to - ambiance and cocktails were spectacular. Worth every penny. Kevin was the best bartender! -
Review 40 (2023-11-03 - Rating: 5)
This is a sexy lounge with a bespoke vibe, velvet couches, mesh privacy curtains - an upscale cocktail menu including a page of delightful zero proof drinks made with herbal seedlip “spirits.” Perfect setting for conversation, slow sips and parties of 6 or fewer.Be warned the bathroom will have you thinking about what might just happen after you leave the lounge. Don’t bring your platonic friend here or they might get the wrong idea. Note - occasionally closed for private parties. Reservation recommended. -
Review 41 (2024-04-17 - Rating: 5)
Intimate, classy, beautiful underground semi speakeasy with a delicate cocktail list and a large choice of drinks - booths are wonderful for group seating too! Benoit is the best host! -
Review 42 (2019-12-31 - Rating: 4)
Raines Law Room is a very cute speakeasy style bar. The cocktails are strong and pricy. The ambiance is good for a small group of friends or a date. I would recommend making reservations if you can, otherwise you might get waitlisted. -
Review 43 (2024-01-23 - Rating: 5)
Went to dinner across the street, and while my suburban friends were waiting for their ubers, I disappeared down the steps of this unmarked venue, in one of the coolest/shadiest exits Ive ever pulled.Tasty drinks. Nice staff. Great prohibition vibes - dark and moody. Clientele wasnt all that interesting that day (including yours truly). -
Review 44 (2021-07-04 - Rating: 5)
Raines Law Room remains one of my favorite NYC speakeasies. We booked the secret garden for a change of scenery and it didn’t disappoint. Another NYC surprise! -
Review 45 (2024-07-20 - Rating: 5)

Review 46 (2023-10-21 - Rating: 4)
Always fantastic drinks, the staff are great and the vibes is a good balance of relaxed but still a bit put together. I highly recommend this place. My only tiny quibble is that the music can be a tad bit loud for a speak easy....the music is pretty good too. -
Review 47 (2024-03-23 - Rating: 5)
The cocktails are amazing! In addition to the drinks on the menu, the bar tenders will cater drinks to the flavors and spirits you like. Thank you Ben and Cisco! -

Review 51 (2023-04-14 - Rating: 5)
The perfect NY speakeasy experience, this bar is a must visit! To enter you ring a bell on your way down to the bottom floor of an unmarked building. Inside, the room is a cozy quiet vibe with mood lighting and plenty of comfy seating for groups.Every cocktail we tried was just as tasty as the last. The selection of unique drinks is pretty extensive and the bartenders are happy to make custom ones as well. All in all, one of the better NY bars I’ve been to. -
Review 52 (2024-07-27 - Rating: 5)
Great cocktail menu in this speakeasy style cocktail bar, I tried the Whiskey Business and Eightfold Path, both of which I greatly enjoyed. They have switches at the table to call over the waiters, which is a nice touch. You can book for certain evenings, although we managed to get the last two-person table late on a Sunday night. The entrance is partially hidden down an undercover staircase - press the doorbell for entry. The cheque came to about $80 for two cocktails each, which I felt was quite reasonable for the quality of drinks, service and atmosphere. -
Review 53 (2022-05-17 - Rating: 5)
This speakeasy has great history behind its name. Dark and cozy inside , with a variety of seating sections with couches and chairs and coffee tables. Be sure to make a reservation. A great selection of drinks are ordered after you pull the light chain at your table. Not sure what the time limit is but the hostess said we had to leave a half hour before the next reservation A must try if you’re into speakeasy’s -

Review 57 (2024-04-25 - Rating: 4)
ReviewLocated in the District of Manhattan, this intimate jazz-age inspired place is worth the wait! Reservations can be quite elusive, adding to the allure of this New York City Secret Bar. My first trip to Raines was with my daughter Neha (she was working at Columbia University at the time) on a cold Tuesday night in June around 7 pm.This entrance is elegant and discreet. To enter, the guests have to ring a doorbell, and are warmly greeted by a staff member who escorts them to their reserved seats. Inside, every seat is a comfortable couch or an extra cushioned chair, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere for guests to relax and enjoy their time. This is certainly one of the most intimate, very romantic, dimly lit hideaways we’ve ever been to. And it is quite the contrast from the bustling NYC outside. Enjoy the company you keep on a lavish couch while appreciating the decadent service of this secret law room. The most unique aspect to Raines law room is how you order from your cozy little niche. Located on the wall with every sitting area is a pull chain, pull it once and a light comes on in the kitchen illuminating which couch needs attendance. It truly feels like royalty, and it adds an air of high society in such a laid back atmosphere. The cocktails are well crafted, offering a full menu of drinks and even a list of seasonal specialties. The cocktails which comprised of apple brandy, lemon and peach liqueur, etc. were superb! The bartenders are true craftsmen who balance their drinks according to taste, style, and personal preference. Cocktails make it likely that youll get into the Raines spirit quickly.Overall, Raines Law Room remains one of the best places to visit if you enjoy cocktails and love to be at an intimate, elegant , and difficult to get in places! So whether you are new to the Speakeasy scene, or an avid hunter of secret places like ourselves, you will never be disappointed in Raines.Enjoy, The Raines Law Room owes its name to Raines law of 1896, authored by John Raines.Thank You Neha for taking me to this amazing place in NYC. -
Review 58 (2021-12-12 - Rating: 5)
Absolutely delicious drinks and a wonderful atmosphere!!! Even standing room at bar felt very spacious unlike many other bars. I typically dont enjoy paying $18 per drink, but these drinks were so expertly crafted that they were definitely worth the price! -
Review 59 (2016-12-01 - Rating: 5)
Best speakeasy Ive been to. There is a long wait, but once youre inside, youre seated on a comfortable couch. The drinks have always been delicious. The staff are amazing. The price for their mixed cocktails are typical for Manhattan, but you also get a unique space to sip your drink in. -
Review 60 (2024-11-08 - Rating: 4)
The drinks were delicious as always, but this time we were sat in the secret garden rather than inside. Not quite the same experience - I would recommend only visiting if you can sit in the main area. -
Review 61 (2023-03-25 - Rating: 5)
Great atmosphere and drinks - make sure to go when you have plenty of time, as itll likely be a very long wait. The music was a bit loud for my taste, and made it a little difficult to hear someone across the table, but that made sure you couldnt be heard by other groups. -
Review 62 (2022-10-11 - Rating: 5)
Made a reservation here for a quick 1 hour drink and snack before our late dinner reservation. My boyfriend and I had a great time!I thought the coolest thing was the entrance with the doorbell to be let in!The service from checking in, being seated, getting greeted and having our order dropped off were prompt and friendly, drinks were amazing and we really enjoyed the Nibble Tray more than we expected!Awesome intimate lowkey vibes , great for date night or a night to catch up and chat with friends. Highly recommend! -
Review 63 (2023-06-08 - Rating: 5)
Great vibes and service! loved the Mayfair (gin with apricot and some other stuff) -- its not on the menu. was recommended it by Ali. Benoit was super kind and checked on us to make sure we liked the drink. such nice atmospherecame without a reservation wednesday at 10:20 and seated right away -
Review 64 (2016-11-03 - Rating: 5)
Very accommodating and great staff. the bartenders are also awesome at making you a drink you like, very social too. (and the drinks are awesome!) the only downside is when you are seated, you sit across from strangers. not a big deal but it is a bit awkward.wonderful atmosphere - great speakeasy! -
Review 65 (2018-02-20 - Rating: 5)
Super classy place with delicious cocktails. Be ready to wait or go earlier in the night. #datespots -
Review 66 (2022-09-20 - Rating: 5)
Incredibly elegant and close-quarters. A dimly lit room, shrouding you in an intimate environment with books paired with elegant bottles on a shelf. Enjoy comfy chairs with candle light tables with an incredible variety of cocktails, including non-alcoholic options. -
Review 67 (2015-11-20 - Rating: 4)
Very cool atmosphere. Superb cocktails. Its good that its a bit exclusive because when you get in there theres no problem with service or being too noisy or anything like that. Service is somewhat pretentious but not too bad. Love that you get their attention by pulling the light switch - every place should have a system like that. -
Review 68 (2018-08-04 - Rating: 5)
Just the best. Their drinks are all expertly crafted and the ambiance is speakeasy best. My only former complaint was wait times but theyve actually expanded the seating so now thats less of an issue. My current favorite cocktail is called the old barrel. Check it out! -
Review 69 (2024-02-22 - Rating: 5)
I was blown away by the drinks and decor but what stood out even more was the service … Ali served us with passion and information beyond belief and Chad the manager had a note on my account from a minor mixup years ago and more than made up for it. -
Review 70 (2016-05-31 - Rating: 5)
One of my favorite spots for a cocktail in Manhattan. But be warned - this place is very small (fits ~20 people total), so you either have to come early, expect to wait (outside), or be smart and make a reservation. Overall, it fits the expectation of a speakeasy (mood lighting, jazz music, old-fashioned furniture), and they have a fantastic selection of cocktails. -
Review 71 (2019-12-05 - Rating: 5)
Fantastic speak easy in chelsea!Obviously there is a waiting but the ambience is really worth the wait. The bartenders are occasionally helpful but you can just tell what you want - and they will get itIf you are not in a big group, go to the bar counter. You witness the innovation of all the amazing drinks + ask for what looks best if you are a newbie -
Review 72 (2018-12-30 - Rating: 5)
Great place with great professional staff. The mixologist here are top notch and know their way around the spirits and ingredients they use. The atmosphere is fantastic with several private booths for your party to sit in. The drinks are always well done and if you dont see something that reaches out to you on the menu the staff is more than happy to whip up a custom drink for you. -
Review 73 (2019-04-17 - Rating: 5)
Gorgeous little pseudo-speakeasy. Recommend putting yourself on the wait list before you get there if you know youre going there. Cozy inside, excellent cocktails. Our waitress was patient and very knowledgeable. Feels like you are transported to another place and time when youre in there. Will return. -
Review 74 (2021-08-07 - Rating: 5)
Excellent drinks. Worth the price. I hate wasting my money on good (but not exceptional) cocktails that I can make at home myself. These were all a step above other speakeasy offerings, exactly what I look for in a drinks spot. And the ambience was perfect for a night out! -
Review 75 (2024-07-20 - Rating: 5)
Wanted to find a nice spot to have some drinks with my girlfriend and this place was perfect. The atmosphere is perfect, low lighting, spacious seating and the staff goes the extra mile. Cocktails are original but what I’ll remember is how accommodating the service is. Felix and Sam took our comfort into personal care and even went as far as calling their sister rooftop bar to check if there was availability for us. Can’t wait to come back - saving this as a favorite. -
Review 76 (2019-08-14 - Rating: 5)
Lets get a negative out of the way: outside the Hamptons season, there will be a wait, which you can spend having dinner at one of nearby restaurants. Once you are in, you get as they say, what you pay for: an amazing array of expertly prepared drinks in a very unique atmosphere with great staff. This is a great place to enjoy a nice night with a date/friends/spouse out or to impress your rich relatives from out of town. Prices are punchy but so are the drinks and are totally worth it. Love this bar. -
Review 77 (2018-05-09 - Rating: 5)
Great place to chill with friends or take a date! Even if you are not an alcohol drinker, this is still a great place. I told the waitress what I was in the mood for, and I was given a super tasty mocktail that hit the spot! They use fresh fruit juices as mixers instead of canned or bottled, and you can taste the difference. -
Review 78 (2018-02-06 - Rating: 5)
Very intimate vibe and stellar drinks. One of the best cocktail bars in the city. Highly recommend going either early or during the week to ensure you don’t wait hours to get seated. If you’re a fan of this bar, check out their other bar Dear Irving. -
Review 79 (2017-09-12 - Rating: 5)
The mood is set from the moment you walk down the steps to the unmarked door below street level on this dimly lit section of West 17th Street. You ring the bell and the door is opened by a doorman, or in this case, a door woman. We were led into the dark moodily lit space replete with deep leather sofa beds and molded copper ceiling. There were even sheer curtains around sets of couches. Making for a very sultry and intimate ambiance. Once seated at your booth, you can go through their extensive cocktail list on your own time. Once youve made a selection, you simply pull the little chain on the wall and a server comes to take your order. The staff is incredibly helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The drinks are delicious and creative. The bar tender is outstanding and makes the best Old Fashioned Ive ever had. I would go back to NYC just for another night of drinks there. -
Review 80 (2016-07-02 - Rating: 5)
Absolutely loved our experience despite the miserable weather outside. Once inside we were warmly welcomed and entertained by the amazing bartenders while we waited for a seat. We tried about 5 different cocktails, and I went back to the off menu old fashioned. Believe it was called a Mackinac old fashioned but not sure. The cherries in it were a fantastic treat at the end, and the mole bitters really added to it. Would be a regular spot if we lived here. Seen some posts complaining of price and have no idea where this is coming from. Beautifully fashioned drinks, an amazing atmosphere, great music and good company makes it worthwhile at about 16 USD / beverage. -

Comfy, warm, lively and all with a cocktail program that will surprise you at every turn (in a good way!). If you have the option, its worth waiting for a seat rather than standing at the bar, and youre likely in for a bit of a wait as what was once (a long time ago) a best kept secret is today a perpetually busy cocktail lounge. Expect about an hour or so wait and plan accordingly. Its worth the wait! -

Very swanky speakeasy with nice dark moody vibe. Amazing spirit forward cocktails and we walked in on a Saturday early evening with no reservation and was seated right away -

If your date takes you here - it means its serious, but still spicy - so you can relax. Thats the whole vibe here: relax, flirt, have a cocktail - rinse & repeat. -
Review 84 (2019-11-09 - Rating: 5)
Very unique experience with absolutely amazing cocktails. Takes a while to get in without a reservation but it’s kept classy, quiet, and fun.The cocktails are extremely well done - especially the high ball. -

This speakeasy in Chelsea is named after a 1896 law meant to curb New Yorkers’ liquor consumption. The entrance is discreet and only distinguishable from a residence door by the black wind breaker enclosure you must first enter. A few steps down, you are led to a black door and on the wall, a bronze sign reads “Raines Law Room, Please ring the bell, someone will attend to you.”I really like the look of this bar because its super cozy and romantic, very dimly lit and it nails a sumptuous ‘20s vibe (Chesterfield furniture, turn-of-the-century wall hangings, and a few bona fide antiques). -
Review 86 (2018-08-28 - Rating: 5)
The process to enter is fantastic. The ambiance is lovely. The drinks are pricy. -

Review 92 (2017-12-04 - Rating: 5)
Super cool little spot, cozy, felt like I was in the 1920s. Hour wait for party of 4 but well worth it. (They will text you when they are ready for you after you put your name in). Mixed drinks are $16 a piece but they are very tasty. -
Review 93 (2022-01-27 - Rating: 5)
Everything you could want from a speakeasy. The cocktails are great. Semi-private areas for a group of 6. Came here for my birthday before dinner and couldn’t have been happier with a cozy NYC spot -
Review 94 (2013-05-07 - Rating: 5)
IF you can get in here, go. This intimate speak-easy is class all the way. My only complaint is that there is too much choice on the cocktail menu! Ok, not really a complaint, I suppose. The cocktails are all fairly priced, which makes it easy to order a few and get the real experience. Of note, the Rome With a View (love Campari!), Antilles (Vermouth and Cognac) and South Side Rickey (Gin and lime). The service is decent. They were very busy when we went, so it was a little inconsistent. Although the drinks are enough to make up for that! -

Beautiful place with really nice cocktails to go around. Unfortunately always has a wait. -
Review 96 (2012-08-12 - Rating: 4)
There is no visible address so look for a black extended covered entrance and go down the steps and ring the doorbell. The atmosphere is of an old speakeasy, and the music is from the 1920s. The drinks are strong and very tasty! The service was average. Very unique and dfferent from a normal bar or lounge. -
Review 97 (2024-10-05 - Rating: 5)
One of the best speakeasies in NYC. Great ambience. -
Review 98 (2013-08-11 - Rating: 5)
Possibly the coolest place ever! Well at least it felt that way at 12am and getting in. There are no password gimmicks and you can make reservations ahead on certain nights. But most nights, if you can find it and theres space for you inside, you are welcome. We were initially tricked by business sign of a law firm. After some hesitation we finally decided to ring the doorbell. Inside, servers arent waved down here like any other establishment. Instead, a light switch cord is found at every table and is used to secretly call the attention of the waitstaff. Drinks are hand-crafted and will not disappoint. -
Review 99 (2015-08-10 - Rating: 5)
Best bar atmosphere Ive experienced yet. Instead of the usual crowded, loud bar, this one is quiet and plays pleasant music. The private sitting areas (separated by curtains) are a comfortable place to catch up w/ friends. -

This quaint, speakeasy eske, lounge is great for high end cocktails and an intimate date night with someone special or a group of friends.Do yourself a favor and make a reservation ahead of time or you could find yourself waiting a bit to get in. -
Review 103 (2013-08-18 - Rating: 5)
Not a typical NYC bar. Ring the door bell to get in, pull a to get someone to come over to take your order, and talk without having to scream. Its cozy, comfortable, has nice collection of unique cocktails and a great outdoor backyard garden area. -

Review 105 (2012-05-31 - Rating: 5)
Some of the best cocktails in NYC along with a cozy speakeasy atmosphere make this place a wonder. The wait can be over an hour long at times, but it is certainly worth it. Hang out at Rye down the block while you wait. -

Review 110 (2021-07-12 - Rating: 5)
An intimate, delicious speakeasy with immaculate drinks. It hosts several booths with their own call button for service, and the atmosphere is low-lit lusciousness. Each drink on the menu stands out in the attention to detail, like the Eight Fold Path dashed with vanilla and served with a single crystal clear ice cube. The staff greeted and hosted us with standout personality. This is a must-go for speakeasy enthusiasts. -
Review 111 (2014-01-05 - Rating: 5)
We were some of the lucky few who happened to be out and about in an otherwise slushy, rainy night so we were able to get in in just under 15 minutes which was a great start to a great experience. Though we werent able to get a seat until later on, standing at the bar was great as we saw the mixologists first hand work their wonders and we got to ask for custom drinks. I tried the aptly named Sweater Weather, an ingenious combo of local apple cider, Tennessee whiskey, Palo Cortado sherry, orgeat and grated cinnamon and the next drink was the Taylor Precedent, an awesome mix of apple brandy, green Chartreuse, sweet vermouth and cinnamon syrup. These guys know their stuff; you can tell them your favorite meal and theyll concoct the perfect drink for you. Add to that an incredible speakeasy ambiance (a la Angel Share) and some cool innovations (the doorbell-type lights to call in the waiters and even the interesting wallpaper in the bathroom) and youve got one of the best speakeasies in New York. A must-go! -

Love the vibes here. There can be a long wait, but if you arrive before 9pm, it’s quite easy to get a spot. Crimson fix and Magic hour if you like gin-based. Sherry colada is an amazing tiki drink. -
Review 114 (2022-09-04 - Rating: 4)
Cardinal sign drink was great with the dill and balsamic balacing well with the fruity flavours. Seating and decor was very reminiscent of prohibition era, but the loud and modern pop music absolutely ruined the ambience... would expect jazz or something quiet rather than bad bunny/doja cat -
Review 115 (2018-03-18 - Rating: 5)
A proper old school speak easy bar. Knock on the door and see if you can get in. During busy hours you might have to wait at the bar for a seat but it is well worth it. Drinks are EXPENSIVE. So make sure you go in with your pockets full. -

Its always helpful to have a friend whos got the hookup! I love speakeasies but per their name, theyre a bit difficult to get into. Luckily, Ive got a good friend in NYC whos a frequent patron and on first name basis with the entire staff so he was able to get us in on a busy Saturday night with a minimal wait.Since it is a speakeasy, theres no sign that makes it known that youve found Raines Law Room. Simply go down a flight of stairs, ring the doorbell, and wait. A host will take your name and phone number. When you get past that initial barrier, you enter a windowless room with charming and old-fashioned Chesterfield couches, interesting wallpaper, antiques, and an overall 1920s vibe. Each table also gets a wall buzzer and chain which you have to pull if youd like to call your server over for another drink. This chain activates a light in the kitchen/bar counter area which lets the servers know which table to go to.We hung out by the kitchen/bar counter and ordered a variety of drinks. Drinks like Sweater Weather (whiskey, apple cider, Palo Cortado sherry, lemon); New York style Sazerac (rye whiskey, cognac, bitters, absinthe); Mr. Fahrenheit (rye whiskey, allspice dram, bitters, chile liqueur); and the Gershwin (gin, ginger, lemon, rosewater). Most drinks are $15.The mixologists behind the magic are fantastic and so much fun. Despite the unceasing fast-paced nights, they never break a sweat and they make wonderful cocktails. You can also ask them to make a cocktail thats not on the menu, and theyre able to whip up sensationally creative drinks for you. -

Arrr, mateys! In but a few words... This here establishment be classy as a fine treasure chest. In a few more words - They craft their grog with a plethora of choices, and I be downright flabbergasted by their early openin time - 2PM?? Most places of this sort tend to hoist the flag at the strike of six.One could argue its a sought-after haven, but even with its early hours, this place boasts a marvelous ambiance. It be cozy, bathed in dim light, furnished fit for royalty, and manned by a crew as pleasurable as a gentle sea breeze. Tis an experience to behold, whether ye be a landlubber takin your first step into a speakeasy or a seasoned sailor whos yet to set foot here.Ye can venture alone (though steer clear come 5 PM on weekends if ye seek a seat).I sampled the Amber Old Fashioned from the stirred and potent selection, and let me tell ye, it did not disappoint. Not for the weak-hearted, but it has a smoothness thatll warm yer soul. For me second round, I ordered the Fedora. It treads a similar path as the Amber but with a touch less force. Make no mistake - it packs a punch.A splendid visit on the high seas, indeed! -

Raines Law Room is one of the best mixology bars in the West Side of Manhattan. The moment you walk you are transported to the 1920s. The tables are shrouded in silk mesh with an old buzzer system to ring for a waitress. The bar is set up as a home kitchen complete with dishwasher, cupboards and a island work space where the mixologists do their magic. This place has never failed to impress friends and dates.#MCC2013 -

Lovely cocktails and martinis! Highly recommend the “Pulling Threads” on the spring menu- with saffron liqueur and orange blossom, it transported me back to Morocco! Menu felt very spirit heavy overall. They do have a very nice bar food menu that could suffice for a meal if you’ve forgotten to eat dinner. The space is quiet and intimate - making it a good place for a date, getting to know someone or close friends. Not a good spot for a big roudy group of friends. -
