The owner Helen is such a gem - thank you for supporting and fostering such an inclusive, safe, and welcoming community. Knowing your bar exists gives me peace during an increasingly scary time. Thank you for all you do.Also, CLEANEST bar bathroom ever, and the staff is so kind and respectful. 12/10!

  • Review 2 (2024-12-31 - Rating: 5)

Found a gem in NYC. So far the best Paella I have tasted outside Spain.

  • Review 3 (2022-05-01 - Rating: 5)

A bit crowded - we had to wait a bit to be sitted - I guess its linked to their success. Because the place is great 👍 We had the best time, for our first time in a NY gay bar. The bartenders (both) were the Nicest!!! So friendly, funny and helpful (thanks again for that, guys!) Burgers and fries are delicious 😉

  • Review 4 (2022-06-28 - Rating: 5)

Joshua and Nick took such great care of us! Hot dogs and service was fabulous! Rich with history and a very eclectic crowd! Drinks prices very reasonable for the village. And they have a juke box too!

  • Review 5 (2024-10-18 - Rating: 4)

A must. Even if just for a pint. Landmark gay bar in the Village

  • Review 6 (2025-01-04 - Rating: 5)

The oldest gay bar in NYC and the most friendly and welcoming. Food is better than youd imagine... We have dinner at the bar about once a week.A gay bar where strangers actually talk to one another.

  • Review 7 (2019-09-06 - Rating: 5)

CLASSIC, long standing watering hole with a delightful grill master dishing out one of the tastiest burgers and fries I’ve had anywhere else in NYC.CHEAP and CHEERFUL is how we love it and this spot has all that and more.

  • Review 8 (2024-02-04 - Rating: 5)

My favorite gay bar in the city for a mellow vibe. The food is always great, the drinks are reasonably priced, and there’s always at least a few hotties. The music is usually a good sound, it’s a chill place I love it.

  • Review 9 (2023-12-20 - Rating: 4)

THE neighborhood gay bar in the village. An institution. Strong drinks, good food ($12 bacon cheeseburger? Yum for a bar burger!), and good crowd. Some of the bartenders need a little flagging down from their phones, but… eh. Go-to west village gay bar 👍

  • Review 10 (2024-06-18 - Rating: 5)

Every burger comes with a side of pride and history. Love this place. 🫶. So glad it’s been a slate-wart(hate that word). The drinks are good. Reasonably priced (all things relative) and they make a mean burger. If you go at prime time it will be packed so place ur food order early! And try and belly up at the bar. That is where you get to see all the action take place

  • Review 11 (2024-10-17 - Rating: 4)

AMAZING burgers and fries. Pretty good margarita too. Our server Jose was a sweetheart. First time there, would definitely go back. Historic dive bar with very good vibes

  • Review 12 (2024-11-18 - Rating: 5)

I was a first time visitor to the gay bars in New York City and up until I found Julius, I was not overly impressed with any of them. I found Julius to be friendly and down to earth. I look forward to visiting there again

  • Review 13 (2023-04-17 - Rating: 4)

Fantastic local gay bar with so much history. Servers are really friendly and the drinks are averagely priced for the area. Has a small kitchen within the bar so sometimes it does smell of fried/grilled food! 🍔

  • Review 14 (2024-11-15 - Rating: 5)

Classic NYC bar with excellent food!

  • Review 15 (2022-01-15 - Rating: 4)

Always a great spot for a stiff cocktail, cold beer and bar grub.

  • Review 16 (2022-03-15 - Rating: 5)

This place was brilliant. The food here was really nice and fresh and it had a really good vibe. This is a great place to come if you’re LGBTQ+. I’d recommend the onion rings and the hot dog.

  • Review 17 (2023-07-30 - Rating: 5)

Low key incredible cheeseburger, i’m surprised it hasn’t gotten more attention.

  • Review 18 (2018-12-25 - Rating: 5)

I’ve taken a lot of treks across the city to end up at Julius. The reason is the people, the history and the cheeseburgers. Come here and talk to folks while sitting at the spot of a pivotal moment in queer history (the Sip-in). And order the cheeseburger:)

  • Review 19 (2023-05-30 - Rating: 5)

They attend you quickly, it is an ancient gay bar, this bar has his history. The hamburguer and the chef was good, like really good, I take out the onion because it is not cooked, but the hamburguer and the natural fries are good. They charge you for the pickles 😅 take a note for that. The gay beer was refreshing and neat. I recommend it.You found locals from the area and pretty handsome people around.I would love to come back.

  • Review 20 (2023-12-22 - Rating: 5)

Historical. Gay. Vibe. It’s a friendly local bar to end your day and start the night. The bar food is hearty. The staff are fab. The crowd are mostly partnered New Yorkers trying to be SJP or Samantha from SatC but half of them probably don’t know the reference. But it’s definitely a vibe.

  • Review 21 (2017-09-01 - Rating: 5)

Extremely friendly. Every visit we ended up meeting people. And one of only two gay bars in NY, of about 8 we visited, that has any sort of decent beer on tap. Whats up with that? (The other was 9th Ave Saloon.)

  • Review 22 (2022-03-01 - Rating: 5)

Never been to this place. Its a cute place to hang the crowd is inviting and the service is amazing. My friends said I had to get the wings. And let me tell you they are so AMAZING. Wow. So we ordered more and then other items and to my surprise again all wr ordered was GREAT. Do they do take out??? Yummmm

  • Review 23 (2022-02-27 - Rating: 4)

4 stars for the dj on Saturday day, he was great and commented.Drinks are so weak. Didn’t try the food.Decor is cute, people are friendly.P.S. It is FULL of bigger older white man.

  • Review 24 (2018-05-21 - Rating: 5)

My favorite NYC bar since late 60s. Bartenders can be great or attitudes...pending on the gossip they accept or their busy day...but you overlook it for the mingling relaxation. History, yes. Winter is a bit stiff ling inside with the fry grease as the kitchen is in the midst of the bar. But that is part of its charm Cheap eats to go with drinks. A favorite if a friend wants to meet up. For mingling...it is a tight tunnel..hard to negotiate. It is the place to go !

  • Review 25 (2019-10-05 - Rating: 5)

Great bar and historic, bartenders are cool and I love Thursday when they have special events... Plus! Those Burgers!! Delicious and affordable and the fries!!! You have to get the experience of this historical place in the West Village!

  • Review 27 (2023-08-04 - Rating: 5)

Love this bar! One of the oldest gay bars in the country. Great cheeseburger and fries. Everyone is friendly here, all are welcome! Bring cash tho!

  • Review 28 (2025-01-02 - Rating: 4)

Ahhhh the burgers are the best with a cold tap beer

  • Review 29 (2018-10-11 - Rating: 5)

My husband and I had our reception here. If you know what it is from the start, a perfect dive bar rich in history for the LGBTQ community, you get exactly that. Pub food, photos and flyers all over depicting the history of the space, and tons of regulars, many of whom experienced much of the oppression the establishment experienced.

  • Review 30 (2024-01-07 - Rating: 5)

My favorite dive that happens to also serve one of the best burgers in all of NYC.

  • Review 31 (2024-09-10 - Rating: 5)

Alway one of my go tos while in the city.

  • Review 32 (2018-06-13 - Rating: 4)

One must go to Julius once in their life. It’s quintessential of NYC past and you will meet the most interesting characters. They have a great party once a month that attract a diverse and artsy crowd, including celebrities

  • Review 33 (2018-05-02 - Rating: 5)

Diversified neighborhood crowd along with out-of-towners of all ages. Great bar menu with exceptional burgers. Good jukebox. The staff is exceptional.

  • Review 34 (2022-04-27 - Rating: 5)

Fun, cozy, historic gay bar with a fun, bustling vibe. It closes earlier than wed like or expect on weeknights, but its worth visiting while its open.

  • Review 35 (2018-11-11 - Rating: 5)

Very nice place. Good happy hours!

  • Review 36 (2019-11-18 - Rating: 5)

Loved this place! $5 beers on sundays from 12pm to 12am! Really good bar food. Very chill ambient.

  • Review 37 (2018-10-07 - Rating: 5)

Julius bar is a jewel. A hark back to a gay world that has disappeared otherwise. Hole in the wall, lacking in any pretense to chic, and friendliest bar in town. The bargain basement burgers are perfect for the environment. Not a first date bar, unless youre in your 50s, or youre a twenty-something couple with a feel for nostalgia. If you dont know the password for the Monsters cover-charge night, Julius is the next best bet, and even possibly a primary go-to.

  • Review 38 (2019-05-02 - Rating: 5)

Julius is one of the those fantastic time-travelling places. Not only will you enter a piece of history, but you will feel cosy and welcomed. Try the burger while ordering your gin and tonic.

  • Review 39 (2018-12-17 - Rating: 5)

Terrific bar. Is a typical newyorker for having a drink or a shot. Reasonable prices an generous glasses.Ideal for everyone, and special if you are looking for ambient

  • Review 40 (2019-01-27 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 46 (2015-06-24 - Rating: 4)

Great, bar great hype. The oldest LGBT bar in the village, it was a lot of fun. And the open kitchen is great when you get hungry in the late hours.

  • Review 49 (2021-07-17 - Rating: 5)

Book an outside table for some leisurely people watching. Whether pregaming or after the dance, the cheeseburger and onion rings off the petite bar room kitchen is the way to go. We came, we supported, we got the tee shirt.

  • Review 96 (2023-01-26 - Rating: 4)

I didnt know about the historic significance when I visited and I wasnt there long however, I like the way it felt. It felt like a place with a lot of stories and quite a lot of character. I loved the fact that they have a little grill up in the front and it smells delicious 🤤😋 If I wasnt headed to dinner with the friends I met there I would have suggested we stay and have something to eat. The thing is it was very crowded especially for Wednesday night. Next time Id like to just sit relax and have a drink and soak it all in. This would be a perfect place for medium to visit. It was oozing with psychic energy

Its the best bar burger in the city. The fries are fresh cut, the onion rings are crispy, and the service is nice. It sounds like Im reviewing a restaurant and not one of the oldest gay bars in the country, but I really do make the trip down to the West Village because I want a burger and cheap drinks with my friends.

  • Review 109 (2022-05-09 - Rating: 4)

This is a great historic gay bar, unpretentious and friendly. They have a concession in the bar that makes fries and burgers which are good but also infuses the air and your clothes a bit with grease. But quite yummy fresh carbs when you’re drinking.

1 St time visiting this bar, it was packed with very easy to talk to people. Fun crowd that was happy and not pretentious. The drinks were well priced. They have a kitchen that serves fried & grilled food, no reason to leave. They have a mini dance floor and plenty of back sitting area. Bathroom is clean. Would revisit again.

Bartender was super friendly yesterday at about 530pm. Happy hour was on, had a Gay beer and went on my way of exploring. This was my favorite bar out of the 4 I went to. :) atmosphere, friendliness, pricing all on point.

With $6 drinks during happy hour I have no complaints! Great food, friendly staff and quite the interesting crowd.Plus the bar scenes from Pose on FX was shot there but I promise you they aren’t that cruel in real life. Everyone is welcomed.

One of the great old gay bars. There is every type of person here and its very low key. Everyone always seems nice. Make sure you get a hot dog if you are drinking as they are amazing.

  • Review 138 (2018-07-18 - Rating: 5)

Oldest continuously open gay bar in town? Inexpensive drinks, friendly crowd with a wide age range. Afternoon bar tender remembers me every time even if I have not been there in a while.

Fun old school gay bar for some beers

  • Review 148 (2022-11-15 - Rating: 4)

Excellent cheeseburgers and fries at reasonable prices. Happy hour at 4:00 and most of the bartenders have a generous hand. Juliuss is billed as the oldest gay bar in NYC and I have no problem hanging out there. However, if you are the least bit homophobic, go get your burgers at McDonalds

  • Review 149 (2018-02-06 - Rating: 4)

A legendary place. Drinks are inexpensive compared to whats around. Some interesting older guys - and they remember. The though times. When nothing was right. So - go.

There on a Friday thick and thin bartenders. Thin guy never stopped movingtook care of the whole bar. Thick guy just stood behind the bar back against the wall watching. Thanks to thin guys hustle drinks were plentiful.

I do love this place. Excellent quality drinks and great DTE clientele. The old timers coming to this dive bar can give great conversation, so make sure you sit up front and be open to random chit-chat. Very entertaining indeed!

Went on Halloween night and it was PACKED! We were hesitant to go in but glad we pushed our way through. This place did not disappoint. Drinks were average priced but the company and conversation is what made us stay. Bartender was attentive.
