Really interesting dishes. We eat out a lot and this place surprises our palate. From autumn salad, to Havatini, and monkfish, particularly the fried okra side dish, all are full of flavors and excellent quality. You will eat very well and next day still be happy when standing on scale! -

We loved this place. The staff is very friendly and attentive, especially Eleno, and the food is delicious. A place that fuses traditional African and European cuisine and has strong roots and a modern and avant-garde character that does not sacrifice quality or quantity. The atmosphere is fantastic, with good and loud music, very cozy lighting and beautiful and elegant decoration. We will definitely be back. -

Outstanding restaurant in all dimensions—immediately became an NYC favorite. The food feels like a fusion of Ethiopian, American, and sometimes East Asian. Given the incredible service, atmosphere, and quality of the dishes, the prices are on the lower end. This is a to-be-Michelin star rated restaurant that you can still enjoy at reasonable prices and with a reasonable wait for a table. Highly recommend!!! -

We had a wonderful dining experience at Hav & Mar, and found the three-course Restaurant Week menu to be a great introduction to the seafood restaurant. Every dish impressed us with its unique, well-balanced flavors and excellent textures. I particularly enjoyed the Swediopian—the bright and slightly tangy apple and avocado water perfectly complemented the cured salmon, making it a refreshing start to our meal. -

Excellent Food Ambiance & Service. Went with a group of colleagues this evening and we had such a lovely time dining here. Such a nice vibe. Music is just right , not too loud but loud enough to set the mood for the evening. Highly recommend if you are looking to challenge your tastebuds a bit. Flavors are unique & interesting. -

A very nice restaurant that offers fusion food between Ethiopian and Swedish. All the food had a very spices that add a kick to your mouth. The salmon is really good. So as the pasta with crab meat. The appetizer is very attractive The blue corn bread is a must try too -
Review 7 (2024-07-01 - Rating: 4)
Very cool interior design reflecting both Swedish and Ethiopian origins. We went with a group of 4 and it was very hard to share. Each dish is beautiful and tasty, but very small portion sizes. I felt like I had only a small bite of everything , which made it difficult to appreciate any one thing. I would not recommend for a big group family style dinner. The food itself is tasty, mostly seafood based menu. -

I have heard of this spot but never made it. I walked in tonight and I am so happy I did. I love supporting Black-owned business.. This spot had it all, ambiance, class, customer service, great food and drinks!!The waiter gave us great Recs! Hav bread basket, Havati pasta, Addis York, Bunna Banana dessert.. Just wow. Great for date night, girls night, after work.. Chill vibes but subtle nice Playlist thats reminds me who owns it. For sure will be back!! U will not be disappointed! -

Review 10 (2024-11-13 - Rating: 4)
The decor is the right balance of Ethiopian and Scandinavian vibe. The sound level gives enough energy without having to yell to speak with your dining companions. The food is delicious and nicely presented. The service very willing and able. Why 4 stars?1 - The Swediopian cured salmon dish should be an amuse-bouche and not an appetizer. The amount of fish is so small that the dish barely registers. At $21, you question the value.2 - When you are presented with the bill, like in other restaurants, the suggested tips appear, stating that the tips are based on the check price after taxes. Really? Since when is a tip calculated on the tax portion of the check? I dont need a guide to calculate the tip (some may), but this last item on the bill is a pure money grab and left a bad taste in my mouth. Not cool.UPDATE following Hav Mars comment. Seems like the bill provided to guests is incorrectly stating that the suggested tip is calculated AFTER tax, when it should be BEFORE tax and that is being addressed by the restaurant. Their guest relations team was on top of it. -

Went for New York restaurant week and it was delicious! Especially liked the bread basket (cornbread was top tier) and the branzino. Our waiter, Darius, was also very knowledgeable and excited to hear what we thought of the different dishes. -

The acoustics are surprisingly quiet and the food with all its diverse ingredients are surprisingly perfect together. If you can’t decide if you want Asian, South American, Caribbean, or African then this place covers all your taste buds for the night! -
Review 13 (2024-05-18 - Rating: 4)
Had an overall good time for a Friday dinner, the staff were professional and the setting was upscale and nice.We got the bread basket but the thing that stood out with the cornbread and honey butter - while the other breads in the basket were interesting, I think we would only ever get the cornbread with honey butter again.Hamachi portion size was small and over spiced (too salty as well), and I personally did not like the salad but maybe others might.Snapper & coconut rice was a little too sour for the sauce (but the rice was crispy and interesting) so we wouldn’t get it again and don’t recommend trying.Addis york was delicious though, the “burrito” style wrap was unique and I loved the flavor profile. The chicken drum stick on the side was mediocre but the wrap definitely made the meal. Was a little on the pricier side. -

Found this gem on google! And everything was great. The mushroom curry is my favorite. I think my monk fish was overcooked but still good. And the most important dish that lead me to try Hav&Mar, the hamachi with black ceviche. However, we didn’t have much of the black ceviche. Which was a bummer bc pics from guests had it. Overall, great experience. I would like to try the seafood tower next time. -

Ethiopian Cuisine by Marcus Samuelson. I totally enjoyed the food and the options of proteins on the menu. Mushroom Curry was delicious! Red snapper served with coconut rice was a favorite this evening. And the scallops with Sunchokes were an excellent appetizer. Must order their signature bread basket, its phenomenal. -
Review 16 (2024-02-17 - Rating: 4)
Hav & Mars elegant atmosphere drew me in, with low lighting, cozy vibes, and stunning attention to detail. While a 15-minute wait wasnt a huge deal, the complimentary sparkling at the bar softened the blow. Service was excellent throughout - friendly, welcoming, and always attentive. Now, the food. It presented a mixed bagThe bread basket was a dream, featuring heavenly fluffy biscuits, slightly sweet cornbread, and a delightful tomato chutney that had me wanting to lick the bowl clean. However, the trio of crudo was a major letdown, lacking flavor and failing to impress even with the hamachi offering a glimmer of hope. The uni Caesar salad was similarly underwhelming, simple, and pedestrian with missing uni and prawns saving the day with their good seasoning. But there were bright spots! The Grand Lobster Jubilee was fantastic, easily serving three with generous protein and an incredible oxtail rice base bursting with flavor. The crispy Brussels sprouts were another winner, perfectly crispy and a delicious complement to the entrees, although their price felt a bit steep. While the portions werent as small as some pictures suggested, the food itself had room for improvement, especially considering the Food Network tax reflected in the prices of a celebrity chef’s restaurant. However, the stunning service truly elevates the experience. The service was attentive and quick, even though the restaurant was busy. They fixed a mistake with our order promptly and apologized. They also checked on us frequently and made sure we had everything we needed. The hospitality was the highlight of the experience.Overall, Hav & Mar offers a beautiful dining experience with top-notch service. I think the food can be improved, especially for the price point. But the service and the atmosphere were excellent. I would recommend this restaurant if you are in the area, but I would not go out of my way to visit it. It’s a good place for a special occasion, but not a regular spot. -
Review 17 (2024-07-12 - Rating: 4)
Heavy seafood focused restaurant. the space is really cute its right next to the Olly Olly market. the service was good but needs improve. the water was empty for a long time and the waiter came over to try to order food but didnt bother to refill the water until asked. and the waiter was a bit pushy to ask us to order, said the restaurant was fully booked and want us to put in order before it gets busy but the entire night it was only half empty with a lot of empty tables. The food was good but nothing really stood out. i think the best was the tuna tartare. my main course the fish was ok, not sure if its the sauce , it didnt enhance the flavor. the price tag is high for what they are offering so i was not that impressed. -

This may be one of my favorite NYC restaurants! I first discovered Hav & Mar last June and recently went back. I was blown away the first time and the second time cemented that feeling. I haven’t had everything on the menu, yet all the dishes I’ve ordered thus far are delicious. As a carb lover, I have to recommend the bread basket. I also recommend everyone order a different dish and sharing, that way you can taste multiple dishes during one experience. Furthermore, the staff are awesome, especially the hostess…she’s so friendly and I adore her chic style. Highly recommend this place! -
Review 19 (2024-01-05 - Rating: 5)
Came here on New Year’s Eve where we had a reservation for 530. We were seated immediately and the staff ready with decorations to boot for New Year’s Eve dinner service. The hostess offered to hang our coats, and we were immediately guided to a table for two closer towards the front of the restaurant. The food was delicious. The ambience was better than I expected, as I have only seen this restaurant on television when YouTube or the likes was interviewing either the executive chef (who was there this night!) or the owner Marcus Samuelson. The only part that I was on the fence about is, I think they had so much staff at dinner service it seemed excessive. We were asked several times throughout the night if everything was OK and or did we want to order anything else. It often interrupted conversation and the flow of the meal. our waitress was amazing and really sweet. It was everyone I guess who is helping her to ensure our dining experience was seamless seemed a bit intrusive. Overall, I definitely will want to experience this restaurant again as the food and service was top tier AND they had a pretty dope DJ experience and large enough seating for tables of five or more. Go here!! -
Review 20 (2023-08-26 - Rating: 5)
Absolutely incredible experience!! From the moment you walk in you receive top notch service which makes for a simplely beautiful dining experience. The Chefs table offers a front row seat to the precision and detail that goes into every dish. I cannot say it enough it is such an amazing experience. Not knowing what to expect from a Swedish Ethiopian fusion restaurant our server Darius walked us through the menu suggesting options that paired exceptionally well together. By far our favorite bites of the night were the; Banana Leaf Snapper, the ribeye, the crab toast and the tuna tartare. The Black Mermaid sizzle drink was a funny unique beverage that I doubt I could ever replicate. I cant wait to be back in NY to dine here again. -

Such a cool oasis in West Chelsea. The vibe is modern and refreshing. We loved grabbing a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. The food was so delicious and enjoyed the flavor journey we went on. The staff were great and our waiter made us feel at home. I have a food allergy and the team made me feel taken care of by guiding me through every dish (much appreciated). Great date or double date spot - completely recommend! -
Review 22 (2024-04-16 - Rating: 5)
An elegant experience through and through. You can instantly see the level of thought and effort that’s been put into the layout of the space but also the menu itself. The staff is as friendly as can be and I loved the wide open view into the kitchen my seat provided. The menu tackles a range of dishes with Swedish and Ethiopian inspiration sprinkled throughout. The scallops were a delicious appetizer with a creamy sunchoke base complementing the briny flavor. While the Addis York was exceptional, with a mix of spicy flavors and seasonings coming together in the doro wat wrap and fried chicken.I only wish I could have tried more of the dishes. Will definitely be returning here in the future! -
Review 23 (2024-09-18 - Rating: 5)
We had a fantastic group dinner for a birthday here! This is definitely a “share dishes” situation. I was unable to eat it due to food allergy restrictions but the standout dish amongst our group seemed to be the grilled cabbage! Everything was really tasty and fresh. I enjoyed their signature martini as well. They close a bit early on a Saturday night though (at least for New Yorkers 😅). -
Review 24 (2024-12-02 - Rating: 5)
Impeccable service, gorgeous decor, airy beautiful space with just the right lighting, and of course amazing food!! Ill definitely come back here.Everything we ate was something unique - each dish was elevated and seasoned to perfection. We were confounded by the flavors in the best way. The bread basket was abundant and the accompanying spreads were all so good - esp. the fermented butter. Loved the steak, and Addis York most of all! But the whole sea bass was also excellent.Id recommend just coming with a group and randomly ordering a half dozen things off the menu - you wont regret it!! -
Review 25 (2024-05-29 - Rating: 5)
Food was delicious, however, think the Queen’s ribeye would have been even better without the béarnaise sauce and oysters were a bit on the small side (compared to the south).Service was exceptional and the view of the kitchen was perfect✨ -
Review 26 (2023-09-08 - Rating: 5)
Amazing dinner! At first I wasn’t sure how Swedish and Ethiopian food would pair but all the dishes were curated super well and had elements of each that went well together. To start we got the Ocean salad, tuna tartare, swediopian, and the blue corn bread. I loved the creative use of injera in the ocean salad and tuna tartare, and the butter for the corn bread was heavenly. For entrees, we got the banana leaf snapper, which was okay, and the havatini, which was INCREDIBLE. The butter uni sauce was delicious I could’ve had it as a drink. Side of yucca fries were just okay - texture was off on some pieces and were hard to chew. Finally for desserts we got the fennel cookie crunch and the bunna & banana, which were both interesting. They have a great bar with creative cocktails, and the vibes are immaculate.Overall recommended dishes: tuna tartare, corn bread, havatini -

Love the space and atmosphere, cozy, open and vibey. Perfect balance between being inviting while also feeling like an upscale experience without pretense. Felt like I couldve spent all day here ordering and enjoying amazing food with good company. Every bite of every dish kept my mind-body connection engaged with what I was tasting and experiencing. Needless to say master chef Fariyal is doing her thing and telling the most delicious stories. Also, Gregory our waiter was so helpful, knowledgeable, fun and kind in helping guide us through the evening. Just a thoroughly wonderful experience and look forward to going back! -

I think I may have a new favourite restaurant in Manhattan! Where do I begin...This restaurant is one of the most tastefully done establishments Ive ever visited in the city. From the ambiance to the decor, from the furniture to the lighting, this restaurant provided a night to remember before the food even came out!And my oh my was the food outstanding. I took a picture of everything we ordered prior to my group basically inhaling each dish. The hav bread basket was a perfectly sized portion of delicious breads and spreads. It came with teff biscuits, cornbread, crisp injera, along with tomato chutney, garlic butter, and shiro hummus. The creativity and culinary fusion to create this dish was tangibly inspiring. What a delicious start.Next was the Swediopian, my moms personal favourite. The salmon was cooked to perfection and presented so beautifully. My dad was equally obsessed with the scallops & shiitake. By far the most satisfying and flavorful scallops Ive tried anywhere.Next came the entrees, the Addis York and the corn wrapped snapper simply changed my life. I dont think any amount of words can do justice to the pure genius and talent behind each of those 2 dishes. I will be thinking of them constantly for quite some time, until my next visit I suppose! -

Awesome evening. Had reservations at Hav&Mar yesterday...a Wednesday. Wife and I arrived a little early ready to sit at the bar until our table was ready. Fortunately we were able to be seated at a high table with a nice view of the open kitchen. For starters we had cocktails. The Women King, King Pleasure & appetizers biscuits. Both drinks amazing as well as the bread. My main course was Black Mermaid rice that just got better and better as I ate. The Wife had the Snapper that was fresh and flavorful. Both nice portions that we shared along with brusselsprouts, salmon small plate & 2 more cocktails. All wonderful!Marcus Samuelson was also in the building relaxing and greeting guests. But not like some uptight management. More like a a homeowner welcoming guests into his home for food and fun. All of the staff from the host, manager, wait staff kitchen and bartenders seemed happy to be there. Helping each other. Laughing with each other. Hearing the music. That makes the food even better. Always a pleasure. Cant wait to go back. -

The food was superb, the decor was unique in the combination of blond wood and Black mermaids, and the ambiance was perfect. Moreover, our server LeDon was both delightful and very professional. -

Arrived early for our reservation so enjoyed drinks at the bar. My friend had a Milk & Honey and I had an Expedition. Really wonderful. We then got to our tables in front of the kitchen - a perfect place to sit if youre a foodie!. Had Havstiooe soup and Mar biscuits, then went for Swediopian, a veg. curry, Hav fries and the Corn wrapped snapper. The snapper was, sadly, quite raw and difficult to eat, but both our wonderful server and the manager, stopped by the table make it right. We finished our meal with a Skal! Skal! cocktail (which I could drink every day for the rest of my life, it was so good!) and Chocolate Twilight and a strawberry rhubarb dessert. Cant wait to go back! -

We went on a week night and the restaurant was buzzing. The ambiance is really hip but still inviting. We got the bread basket to start and the Tomato Chutney really stood out.Out of the mains we ordered the Scallop & Shiitake was amazing. Some of the best scallops I’ve had. The Black Mermaid Rice was something I’ve never had before and also recommend. We got the Brussel Sprouts, Sea Bass, and a delicious Apple Persimmon Crisp to finish. Our server was lovely and helped us pick out the dishes and drinks. The kitchen was a bit backed up so our mains took a little longer to arrive but they were so sweet and sent over an extra dish to make up for it. It wasn’t even a long wait but this was the extra mile for us.Highly recommend Hav & Mar if you’re a seafood fan! -

Wow!! Neighborhood gem and one of the hottest new restaurants in NYC (as of Feb-23).Every dish was amazing. Hard to pick a favorite, but the Addis York and Swediopian were especially excellent! As was then corn hush chocolate lace cake dessert. And the service was impeccable. And the ambiance!10/10 restaurant. I almost wish it would stay under the radar so that reservations remain possible…But seriously just go!!!! It’s something you should experience to believe. -
Review 34 (2023-12-10 - Rating: 4)
Looking at the reviews and pics of this place, I was really excited for the experience. And of course I had high expectations from a Marcus Samuelsson establishment. And for the most part it did not disappoint. The ambiance was warm and inviting and the attention to detail was beautiful. Service was attentive despite it being a little busy. My friend and I sat at the bar and had a full dining experience. First, the cornbread appetizer was a perfect start to dinner. My only slight disappointment was with the pasta dish. The amount of shrimp and crab wasn’t much and left a lot to be desired. And my friend thought the lamb meatballs were just ok. I didn’t try it but he said the sauce/gravy was rather thick. And the red snapper dish was rather tasty, I just would have preferred the full brussell sprouts instead of just the charred outer leaves. But there were other dishes that I wanted to try so I would go back again for something different. -
Review 35 (2023-04-09 - Rating: 5)
The food was fantastic, but Id recommend sitting at a table rather than the bar for food. The bartender wasnt particularly attentive and didnt have much to say about the food when we asked questions. The cocktails looked amazing but we stuck to mocktails which were just ok, not much flavor. Love the overall vibe and decor of the place though. -
Review 36 (2023-01-29 - Rating: 5)
Amazing seafood and vibes! Loved the hamachi ceviche and our waiter was such a chill and lovely lad. Icing on the cake was that chef Marcus came up to our table to say hi too and was a starstruck moment 🤩 definitely worth a visit if you’re in Chelsea! -
Review 37 (2024-02-29 - Rating: 5)
Offered this a chance strangely this earlier week and treasured it! I didnt have the foggiest idea what to think when I thought about a hybrid of Swedish and Ethiopian food anyway the flavors and food decisions were perfect. The bread holder is astounding and generally coordinated with the tomato chutney, hummus, and matured honey margarine. In like manner loved the reestablished salmon starter as well as the snapper course since there were such endless complex flavors! Also, the banana tiramisu was great! Remarkable energy and extraordinary assistance. -

The Arctic Char was amazing and the Ethiopian cornbread was the best cornbread Ive ever had.The service was great, and the vibe was warm, and modern. Portion sizes werent huge, so be prepared to try lots of small tasty dishes but overall I highly recommend this place!Especially for a date night -

We celebrated my brother-in-law’s birthday and Juneteenth at Hav & Mar this week and had a wonderful experience. Great vibe, warm, helpful, friendly service, and extraordinary food! The ceviche trio was so good we almost ordered another one. The salad was great and the special hoppin’ john and the mushroom curry were next level good! Oh and the Hav yucca and sweet potato fries - wow 🥰 I’m salivating just thinking about how good the food was as I write this review 🤤 We will be back! 🤩🤩 -

I’ve never thought African and Nordic food can be fused, until I heard about @havandmar with their Swedish + Ethiopian fusion! Everything was delicious and very special.Bread basket is a must try and the tomato jam was so unique. Swediopian is also a must even just for the name. I also really enjoyed the ocean salad and the corn flavored couscous! -

The Hamachi with Black Ceviche was gloriously complex with floral notes, and sweet notes with the hamachi cured perfectly. The heat is subtle but present enough to awaken the palate. It was beautiful and delicious. The Havatini 2.0 had perfectly cooked pasta with plentiful shrimp and crab and a creamy sauce with delightful seafood flavor. The BBQ cauliflower was spicy with good charred flavor. The raspberry and mango sorbet was the perfect light end -

Get ready for taste buds to be fully engaged! 😃😃 The food here is delicious! Had the sea bass, winter salad, Brussels sprouts and bread basket! And Rye cocktail and honeycomb Aquavit. Everything was great. The flavors work well together- nothing is overbearing - Ethiopian flavors and Swedish inspired dishes. Beautiful bar at the center— flying mermaids art decor on walls and on staff aprons - amazing cocktails - and attentive, friendly and knowledgeable staff!!! Bring a friend, sit at the bar, or enjoy a beautiful dinner on the rich, velvet, rustic-brown soft chairs. PS: get for the bread basket where the Ethiopian seeds biscuits just melt in your mouth — 💐😃 -

Nice Restaurant, Tropical Flavor, Good Vibe7 Aunties Greens is a must! Savory and delicious—strongly recommended. The Red Chermoula Half Chicken had slightly burned skin, but I believe it was intentional, so I let it slide. The sauce? Absolutely heavenly. The Piri Piri Monkfish surprised me—in a good way. The mung beans were a unique addition, adding volume to the dish and balancing the softness of the monkfish perfectly.Service was decent, and the server explained the food well.Overall, I’d recommend Hav & Mar for anyone looking for good flavors and a great vibe. -

Not a bad bite to be had here. our favorites were the swediopia (raw salmon) and the red snapper. the swediopia is definitely the most unique raw salmon i’ve had and made use of spices and flavor combos i don’t think i’ve tasted before.the red snapper was perfectly cooked, and is intended for two people though it is not marked on the menu as such.the havatini pasta had that buttery seafood flavor of uni, with shredded crab mixed into the sauce and bits of shrimp.the blue cornbread was also amazing, though it wasn’t actually blue despite the emphasis on blue in it’s item description. it comes with a honey butter.the peach cobbler was pretty good, but honestly skippable if you’re too full and didnt shine as much as the other dinner items did. -

Hav & Mar was an absolute culinary delight! Our Restaurant Week experience was unforgettable. The Swediopian was a brilliant fusion of flavors, a perfect balance of spices and seafood. The Havatini was the ideal refreshing cocktail to complement the meal. We couldnt resist the unique blue cornbread, a delightful twist on a classic. And the Arctic char was cooked to perfection, flaky and flavorful. The atmosphere was vibrant and the service impeccable. Oh! My! Gosh! It was unexpectedly FANTASTIC! Why?Because of the reviews I read. Let that be a lesson not to believe everything you read! Period! My guests even commented on how much they enjoyed the food and how the portions were perfect for them. I had not shared how previous reviewers complained about the portions being too small.Of course, most of us have become accustomed to massive portions - enough to bring home. That may be the problem. On the way there, one of my guests commented that he did read about other customers complaining about prices, ... but they have to pay that rent! Prices in the grocery stores have gone up exponentially...Oh yeah! Thats just regular pricing then!...Good point! The prices in Costco have increased so much, it makes me talk to myself OUT LOUD 😂 Thank goodness I still wear my face mask, so that people cant see my lips move... maybe they can hear me 🙃 but I digress...We started the FABULOUS bread basket. So wonderful! We did NOT wait long AT ALL for our entrees as other commenters have complained about. We were just getting into our DELICIOUS breads with exquisite dipping sauces when our plates arrived. PERFECT timing!I had the striped bass, and vegetables that had enough cilantro to make me want to drop a tear because I LOVE cilantro! Its enough where I can actually taste it, rather than be teased by it. The veggies were also kissed with lemon. LOVE at first taste! Also loved that crispy skin on the bass. The bass was not seasoned, but I really appreciated that due to the other flavors on my plate. The thickness and texture of that bass makes me want to run to Chinatown and get a few pounds for myself! The spicy sauce that the fish & veggies were served in is spicy - upon first bite. The spicy seemed to disappear as I ate... of course I LOVE spicy, too.One of my other guests received her plate and exclaimed that the red snapper portion was perfect for her, and perfectly spicy. My other guest had the lamb meatballs - only two - but stated the portion was perfect for him, as well, and did not want anything else, as I encouraged him to order. One guest and I ordered mocktails. We both enjoyed ours. So thankful it wasnt flooded with sugar.Neither one of my guests wanted dessert, which is probably why I have a ghost of a waistline, and they dont. Never liked cheesecake, so I indulged in the chocolate cake... OH! MY! GOSH! TO! DIE! FOR! Not even I could finish it, and I tried! It is rich with varying flavors of chocolate/cocoa.Its now 2:35 am, and Im STILL full!My guests had nothing but praise for them, also, and we are ALL foodies, and excellent cooks, with different and similar cooking styles (Scratch Cooks, spelt flour & keto users, fresh raised doughnut maker (guilty 😄), etc., and we ALL agree that the food, atmosphere and space was WONDERFULLY AWESOME experience!I WILL eat there alone, one night. Our waiter was precious. We appreciated him, wholeheartedly! PLEASE tip your waitstaff, and be kind. They work heck of hard having to deal with different energies and egos. Maybe thats the problem with negative reviews/comments; negative energies and egos. Hmm... Ive learned the hard way that one cannot prepare GOOD food & enjoy it with a bad/negative attitude. Better to order out on those days 😉I simply dont understand the negative reviews. Thank goodness theres tons more positive positive reviews/comments than negative.Bring a jacket! We got there when they first opened. As the evening wore on, it got very crowded. On a Tuesday night? Wow! What does that tell ya?! And its a huge space. Due to the crowd, it wasnt as cold, but still cold enough to give all three of us chills.Good company. Excellent food, beautiful space and atmosphere, what the heck more could one ask for? We had a PERFECT night! All the way home, and long into the night, from our perspective homes, we continue to talk about how magical our experience there was. What a wonderful business for a husband and wife. I pray continued successES. -

First, I love the low key atmosphere and the ambient light. Ive noticed, as Ive aged, that a lot of so-called popular restaurants are noisy and bright and the food is only OK. Hav and Mar is the opposite of that. Its a relaxing place with fantastic food- to the eye and the palate, excellent, professional service and great music. I hope it stays this way. -

❤️ Overview:My friend and I went here for dinner on a Friday night. The place was definitely busy so I’m glad we had a reservation. We made a reservation for the high top tables, which were actually comfy and nice. A lot of space actually! Overall, the food was very tasty! A bit expensive, but that’s nyc and seafood for you!Like I really enjoyed the Swediopian, but it wasn’t enough salmon for the price. But that’s okay because I barely was able to finish my pasta dish. Which was good as well, but I wish I had more crab in it or like more crab chunks like the shrimp chunks that were in it! The coconut tres leche cake really surprised me! I’m not a big sweets person, but it was super delicious. It was light and fluffy and melted in your mouth. It wasn’t too sweet either so I was super happy about that because that’s usually my worry when ordering dessert. Our server was super attentive and nice. Everyone there was super friendly actually. Awesome atmosphere as well!❤️What was ordered:FOOD: Swediopian, branzino & smoked romesco, havatini 2.0, and the coconut tres leche cakeDRINKS: Pilsner and watermelon beer❤️Stand outs:Branzino & smoked romesco and the coconut tres leche cake❤️Would I come back/recommend:Yes - I would come backYes - I would recommend -

What an amazing experience! The chef is a culinary genius. The food was DELICIOUS the flavors were out of this world. Everything from the bread, sides, small plates to the entrees was flavored so well and cooked to perfection. I am Eritrean so I particularly enjoyed the Ethiopian influenced plates, especially the shiro hummus and Doro. And the customer service was unmatched. The waiters and staff were very attentive and made us feel like superstars. The chef also took the time to greet us and send over a plate as a congratulations on my niece’s graduation. -

Meal was great. Flavorful and interesting. Service was lax and disengaged, which was crazy because it wasn’t very full because it was 9pm on Wednesday. -

Hav Mar was on my list for a while. I really enjoyed my first visit for dinner. My starter were Helga’s Meatballs. While I wish they were a little bit juicier it was a good dish. My favorite was the seared striped bass. It was tender with crispy skin and a wonderful broth which was spicy and sour. The decor was lovely with friendly and attentive staff. -

We arrived an hour early for our table and were easily accommodated. Very impressed! The Greens, Addis York, Wild Mushroom Curry and Plum tart were all fantastic! Our server was delightful. Cocktails were spot on. Definitely deserves its spot on the top 💯. -

Delicious, well paced meal. Seared char was so excellent the flavours and textures were in perfect harmony. The seafood pasta was scrumptious also packing a punch of umami flavour, though i maybe wish they had homemade pasta, but this is always my wish.Banana sour cocktail for dessert was yummy. The cornbread had a blanaced sweetness, and was moist but still crumby. The hummus that comes with bread basket was really yummy for some reason. -

This restaurant was absolutely amazing. From the beautiful decor, to the amazing staff, and most importantly the delicious food. The plates are small so they recommend family style dining. Our favorite by far was the soft delicious biscuits, the salty and sweet seaside waffle, and the smoky but fresh swediopian. I woke up this morning still thinking about my amazing dinner I had last night. Definitely going again! -
Review 65 (2023-01-04 - Rating: 5)
We ordered several small plates and entrees to share, and each one was more delicious than the last. The unique blend of flavors influenced by food from around the world complemented the fresh seafood without overpowering it. We could have stayed and eaten all night if our stomachs would have allowed. Be sure to order at least one of the amazingly creative cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else. -

The food was yummy. The Hamachi with Black Ceviche was a hit!!! We had The Swedipian salad dish. I think you have to have an acquired taste and a specific palate for that dish. I had the Banana Leaf Snapper which was EVERYTHING.The atmosphere was great. There was a very diverse group of people dining. Service was good. If you are in the area, and can snag a reservation, I’d stop by here. -

Exceptional. Period.Came in last night with 3 others. They were slammed. We were accommodated with a table but seemed to have slipped through the cracks of how busy it was and didnt get served for a little while. The entire staff should be proud as to how they handled it.Honest mistake fixed with honest apologies, comps, friendly staff and some of the best food Ive had in the city in a long time. The cocktails were superb and the chef is clearly an Allstar.I will be back and will be recommending Hav & Mar to anyone who wants a great experience. -

I visited Hav & Mar for lunch by myself one afternoon in NYC and it lived up to the hype. I absolutely loved my meal and thought everything was done expertly with a twist. The cornbread was probably the best I ever had. The tuna tartare was super tasty, but the star was the uni caesar salad. I would eat that everyday of my life. The crab and shrimp bucatini was also excellent and filled me up at the end of my meal. I would highly recommend experiencing Hav & Mar. The staff was super personable and knowledgeable of the menu. The ambiance was also very nice. Go here and enjoy their delicious seafood menu! -

Absolutely loved my experience at this seafood restaurant. The food is exotic, flavorful and delicious. The decor is warm and inviting. The service was excellent. We loved all of the dishes we tried including the she crab soup, assorted breadbasket and the lobster bird. Our entrees included the black mermaid rice, corn husk snapper and Dawa Dawa seared bass with a side of collard greens. We were to stuffed to eat dessert but will be back again soon. I also loved seeing Marcus Samuelson greet guests table by table. It was a lovely way to spend my birthday! -

Overall, Hav and Mar is a great addition to the neighborhood. The space and ambiance are fantastic, the wine list is super-approachable, and the food is excellent. The crab soup and black rice are two particular highlights. My only complaint is the cadence of the meal. We asked them to course 3 apps and 2 entrees into a kind of 3.5-course meal, but everything basically came at once (to the point that our table was overflowing). -

Review 80 (2023-06-01 - Rating: 5)
Had a great dinner. The food was delicious. Every dish was a flavor bomb. The four of us shared the hamachi, scallops and oysters as appetizers. The hamachi was the best. For entrees we shared the chicken and the fish for two. For our sides, we had the brussels sprouts and Hav fries. For desserts, we had the donut and the tart. Each plate offered a different favor profile. Be it savory, salty or spicy. I can truly say that I have not had food this good in a long time. Highly recommend. If I had to make one critical comment, it is the lighting. I think the environment/atmosphere could be much improved with some candles on the tables. -

My wife and I had such an amazing time at Hav and Mar!!! Our server Jay was OUTSTANDING! From the moment we sat down she took care of us from start to finish. It’s wonderful to have someone take time and take care of you as one of their own. I’ve been to many restaurants and most of the time, from my own experience, they treat you like you’re just a check to increase, but not here. She went above and beyond. She gave us great recommendations when it came to the drinks/food. She was also very social and fun to talk too. Me and my wife had such an amazing anniversary dinner, Jay even took the time out of her day to write a personal “Happy Anniversary” card and it was very touching. Those little details are what makes us want to come back to this establishment. Food was exceptional! Drinks were vibrant and perfect. Service was outstanding and our server, Jay, was the best one we could ever ask for. We will definitely be coming back over and over again. -

It’s all about the flavors and textures, set in a beautiful space, which might have been inspired by a quiet evening sitting on a deck of an island bungalow watching mermaids perform somersaults from the sea. I’m still thinking of the cocktails, they were amazing, complex with heat and sweetness. All around great experience with with wonderful family. -

Went here for dinner recently and had pretty good food. Everything was flavorful and different. We would have ordered more drinks, but the service was subpar that they never asked for another round. Other than that I enjoyed the flavors. We ordered the bread basket which was good but was overwhelmingly sweet for me. I was looking for something that will mellow down the buttery and sweet feeling. Nevertheless it was still good. Loved the butter and the tomato relish. We also ordered the market curry and snapper - very flavorful. -

This was a nice place. Food was excellent. I didnt really know what a lot of it was honestly so I went on their Instagram. There were photos of the food but I feel like the photographer may not have caught the food in a great light. What was brought out wasnt exactly what I got from the photo. (Did not try ALL dishes so may have just picked a lucky one) but the drinks were great and our service was amazing. Definately recommend the blue corn bread and the crab toast ! -

Review 88 (2023-06-11 - Rating: 5)
Tried this out for the first time this past week and loved it! I wasnt sure what to think when I thought of a hybrid of Swedish and Ethiopian food but the flavors and food selection were wonderful. The bread basket is amazing and well-paired with the tomato chutney, hummus, and fermented honey butter. Also really loved the cured salmon starter as well as the snapper entree because there were so many complex flavors! Also the banana tiramisu was great! Great ambience and good service. -
Review 89 (2023-06-27 - Rating: 5)
This is a must-try destination! The seafood driven menu has flavour profiles you will not see at any other restaurant in NYC, and that is saying a lot. The atmosphere is very energetic but not noisy. The staff was attentive and were knowledgeable about the menu and item preparations. Instead of leaving room for dessert order the bread basket. Not that the desserts are bad, its just that the breads are that good! Scallops & shiitake, Havatelli, banana leaf Snapper, Mermaid couscous, FOTD (Dorade) were all winners. The E & W oysters tasted like they came right off the dock. -

Went to Hav & Mar with my cousins for a family dinner, and we had an amazing time. From the beautiful decor to the knowledgeable staff to the superb food, everything was simply perfect and super delicious (would highly recommend the grand jubilee, the seared bass, and the snapper).Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a wonderful new spot to try out in Chelsea. What made this experience doubly wonderful was that Chef Marcus Samuelsson not only spoke to us multiple times throughout the night (checking in on how our food was and asking about how we were doing), but also, he went above and beyond giving us a tour of the restaurant as well as explaining his inspiration behind it. In summation, this place is a MUST if you’re in NYC, and I hope you all build amazing memories like we did here tonight. -

In a really good moment you will remember the details. But when that experience is topped off with great service, you remember how you felt. Thanks to the GM Jonathan and the captain Kwame they made the experience at Hav & Mar exceptional . I am so grateful to them. -

Hav & Mar was phenomenal. The service, food and atmosphere are all great. Highly recommend the Blue Cornbread, Hamachi w/ Black Ceviche and Addis York. If youre 2, the high tables are in the middle of the restaurant and by the kitchen which can make for a fun experience. -

The skin on a fillet of black sea bass is seared to a pale-gold crisp before the fish is perched over hard-shell clams and purple potatoes. Underneath is a seafood-corn broth. Both the sauce and the bass are flavored with dawadawa, ground African locust beans, which acts as an intensifier in this dish, something like miso. -
Review 95 (2024-12-21 - Rating: 4)
Really nice spot. I was glad to try Marcus Samuelssons food for the first time. The fusion of Ethiopian, Swedish, and I guess increasingly Black American cuisine is dynamic, vibrant, and nuanced. That said, wherever sweetness was used as a note, it was heavy handed. I enjoyed the fish, which tasted fresh and lively, with smooth coconut undertones and herbaceous highlights, but the amount of syrup on the Brussels sprouts was slightly too much. The cocktails were cloying, and I like sweet drinks. The space itself is hip while remaining welcoming, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. From what I understand of Samuelssons philosophy of food, the place hit all the right notes, being welcoming and elegant at the same time. Likewise, the food was comforting, elegant, fresh and daring in equal parts. My only critique was that the sweetness was heavy handed and overshadowed otherwise remarkable dishes. -

Good restaurant/food. Two complaints1) while the service is good I feel bad for some of the workers because I have witnessed customers take advantage of employees just to get their way. While I understand this is a profession where the customer is right, however some customers know the system and abuse it to get what they want.2) the staff is friendly but one of the male bartenders is to friendly with the female guest giving them extra drinks, making passes at them, and even suggesting to go home. I would definitely try to get this under control as it can extend to legal action! -

We stuffed our faces on the cornbread and biscuits and unfortunately had no more room for dessert! I came back for restaurant week and ordered from that menu. I was less wowed, but it was still great food. Definitely get the bread basket! This is a big space and the music isnt too loud. Service was always excellent 👌 -

Swanky Ethiopian-Swedish fusion on the west side. Snapper with coconut rice was definitely a highlight but not the largest or most original dish. The lobster jubilee was also a smash hit for the table. I recommend the breads as well which are all made in house. -
Review 111 (2023-03-02 - Rating: 4)
Food was delicious, drinks are tasty, the room is warm and lively and the service is professional and sweet (I think our server was Shania, she gets 5*). Main issue is the value proposition. Serving sizes are quite small and everything is rather fully priced. In particular, we enjoyed the tasty Mermaid Black Rice but at $52 for a few flakes of crab & lobster (didn’t really see if there was lobster in there), it’s a disappointment. Along those lines, the menu is designed for sharing but the hamachi (at $22) provided basically one forkful per person for our party of 4. We encountered the same issue with almost every dish. The restaurant is terrific but I hope they can figure out either how to lower prices or increase portion sizes. Maybe the menu works better for parties of two, not sure but on balance the place is a nice addition to the Manhattan food scene. -
Review 112 (2023-03-22 - Rating: 4)
Food was very good. We especially liked the scallop and shiitake plate and the Havatelli and the corn wrapped snapper. And for dessert, highly recommend the Chocolate Twilight!!! And Marcus Samuelsson was on site which was exciting. My takeaway, based on the vibe/ambiance is that this is a fabulous restaurant for neighborhood corporate gatherings rather than a neighborhood restaurant that locals will make their regular gathering spot. -

Marcus Samuelsson and his team of Thomas and Franshelis welcome you warmly ... and deliciously ... to this most wondrous of places. The space blends the Ethiopian and Swedish influences so its both inviting and stunning. The kitchen is an orchestral theatre ... sit near it if you are fortunate to have that option. The aromas waft to you and you have both dinner and a show ... its precision in motion with the collegial vibe that means that everyone is having a great time in there. You taste it in the dishes ... each one a lyrical dance in your mouth. Lusciousness is in every morsel and sip and moment. It is a masterpiece and my new fav place. And predicting it is soon to become impossible to get in as New Yorkers & our guests eagerly return for the nourishment of body ... and soul. -

Try this place out ASAP - I expect it to be very popular!!To start, the service was absolutely incredible, especially considering the recent opening. Knowledgeable and attentive staff, both in direct waiters and staff delivering plates or waiting on other tables. We got 3 to share plates, a fish plate, and bread and dip for 2 people. (Ignore my cameras lighting, it doesnt do the plates justice) The cuisine is new to me - Swedish meets Ethiopian - and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavors and presentation.- Our waiter recommended the (cured salmon) Swediopian to share, WOW. I would never have ordered this on my own, so thank you Mackenzie + team for that.- I will be dreaming about the Crispy Yucca. A MUST!- Scallops were perfectly prepared.- Corn Wrapped Snapper with coconut rice, brussels, and radish -- not much sharing going on, I barely put my fork down.Beautiful visuals in this space, and comfy booths.Price: for the incredible quality of food, the thought put into available wines/drinks, and again the *amazing* service, I thought the bill was on par. Cant wait to return! -

Good food and great service in an industrial and airy space. The portions were on the smaller side which encourages ordering more and Im okay with that but it adds up quickly on the bill. Some of the dish names were more accurate than others. For instance, I wish the she crab soup had more crab meat and flavor in it. -

Solid 4.5. Food is very flavorful, servers and host go above and beyond. The only thing slacking is a little more TLC on the bathroom upkeep. Besides that, this place is beautiful, facility is clean. They have an A for food grade. Loved that their food didnt make me sluggish. Try the scallops! Soooo good! I was a little underwhelmed with the dessert menu but still VERYYYY good food! I will be back. -

Finally a place that doesn’t serve the same tired menu options of most NY restaurants, but that offers inventive dishes that combines the culinary traditions of several cultures (Ethiopia, Sweden, Japan, etc). It’s the second time for me here and everything was great again (tried the restaurant week menu this time). Besides the food, also loved the interior and the music selection that create a good atmosphere. Highly recommended. -

Good vibe, tasty food and cocktails and friendly service. The Hav bread basket, Addis york and Chocolate twilight was the highlight for the evening. Mermaid black rice and Bunna and banana (banana tiramisu i will put it) get a shout out too.Of course everything can be shared but I still think the portion is rather more to individual or two person max. This place is definitely a great addition to the creative cuisine line up. -

The food was absolutely incredible!! It’s such an amazing experience when you go to a restaurant, order something of the menu whereby you don’t really know what to expect and it turns out amazing. Our favourite dishes were Swediopian, Hamachi Black Ceviche and the Banana Leaf Snapper! Such incredible and unique flavours. The staff was competent but lacked warmth and personal touches. -

Beautiful dining room with incredible service to match. Food is a little expensive for the portions, but the plates are incredibly charming and delicious. Overall a great experience but whether its worth the price is arguable. -

Had dinner with a friend here and we loved everything we ordered. I think my favorite was the Corn Wrapped Snapper with the coconut rice. There was a light caramelization on the coconut rice which was phenomenal. The Hamachi with Black Ceviche was my friends favorite of what we ordered. We also got the Seaside Waffle (not pictured) which was good but theres a fair amount of syrup on there so best save that almost as a dessert. Overall loved the food and ambience and cant wait to go back! -

We flew all the way from Atlanta after seeing Chef Fariyal on Bon Appètit Food Network and just had to try it. The ambiance set the tone for a nice dining experience. The flavor and textures were impeccable. Chef Fariyal was a delight to meet, she was as warm and welcoming as her cuisine. To top it off she invited us into her kitchen to take a few photos. -

I was very excited to try this restaurant since I’m a fan of Marcus Samuelson’s restaurants. The atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was outstanding. The food fell short. I had the Campanelle With seafood in Uni butter. It was OK nothing extravagant. I felt there was too much butter and it needed to be balanced out with something else. The fries were very dry. My son had the ribeye which was decent, but all of the food came out warm and not hot. Maybe the restaurant is more known for its seafood? I will try again because the atmosphere is lovely. But these dishes, need to leave the kitchen when they were done and not sit on the counter where they can lose heat. -

Delicious and creative dinner at a comfortable establishment with perfect service from Jay S. There is an Ethiopian influence in the dishes. The bread plate came with teff biscuits and a lovely Ethiopian hummus made of chickpeas and capsicum. It was light and airy, and most unexpected. I particularly loved the whole fish prepared with watercress. The cauliflower and bok choy side was subtly sweet and spicy, with the spiciness experienced in a different part of the mouth from the hummus. The okra side was served three ways-fried, roasted and as a pesto. I look forward to more surprises on a return visit. -

I had the delight of dining at Hav & Mar yesterday, a unique fusion venture from the brilliant mind of Chef Michael Samuelsson. Its an extraordinary mélange of his Ethiopian and Swedish heritage, with a particular focus on seafood. But seafood isnt the only star here, as every dish I tasted was an exquisite testament to Samuelssons culinary prowess. The bread platter, our opening act, was a harmonious symphony of flavors. A spicy red paste complemented what seemed like a creative spin on cornbread. Yet, it was the pairing of classic butter with rich bread that captured my palate. Our meal progressed with two shared appetizers: a revitalizing beet and watermelon salad, and another vegetarian delight that won my heart. Though modest in size, these dishes delivered a refreshing palette of greens, perfectly setting the stage for our main courses. My choice, the chicken and plantain dish, was an experience in itself. The fusion of familiar ingredients enhanced with a vibrant array of spices and a tangy sauce brought a new depth to the plate. The mocktail I enjoyed was a refreshing companion to my meal, striking a perfect balance of taste and satisfaction. In conclusion, Hav & Mar isnt just a meal; its an unparalleled culinary journey. Its a testament to the genius of Samuelsson, who seamlessly weaves together diverse flavors and ingredients, creating an unforgettable dining experience. For those seeking an adventure for their taste buds, Hav & Mar undoubtedly earns a well-deserved 5 stars. -

Fantastic experience!!! As someone who watches cooking shows during mealtime, my daughter and I were fortunate to reserve a table kitchen side. What a treat to observe the timing, coordination and efficiency as the staff prepared and expedited these delicious creations. It was akin to viewing a well choreographed dance. Our very attentive server Shania started us off on the right foot. She was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions, as well as properly query us, to aid in our decision making. We selected the Hamachi Black Ceviche and Swediopian for openers. For our entries we opted for the Addis York and the Corn Wrapped Snapper. For the finale we went with the Chocolate Twilight. To get things going for drinks the Skal Skal and the Aquavit grapefruit, dill and habanero highball sounded interesting. Having never tried Ethiopian cuisine Shanias guidance proved very beneficial. But how did it taste? TERRIFIC. Everything from the cocktails to the sweet finale was on point. Preperations were timed perfectly so that we could share each dish and as we finished one the other was right behind. The flavors were balanced the textures unique and our palate was well rewarded. Our water glasses never went below half full or empty depending upon your perspective! Even the lavatories were carefully monitored. The towel supply was getting low yet as I exited the restroom waiting outside was a staff member with a new bundle ready to go.The highlight of the evening was the opportunity to meet Fariyal Abdullahi the executive chef. She was incredibly gracious. She took her time as we discussed her background, the cuisine and life in general. She even went so far as to introduce us to her beverage director Rafa Garcia Febles who explained how they come up with some of their creations. For example they try to utilize everything. Even the avocado pit which typically would be discarded is used in one of his masterpieces. After spending considerable time with us, Fariyal returned to the kitchen. We shared a very delicious Chocolate Twilight while commenting how incredible this experience was. But it wasnt over. No sooner had we laid down our spoons and Fariyal returned carrying something. She was accompanied this time by her head baker Farheen Jafarey. Fariyal introduced us and like everyone we encountered Farheen was kind, pleasant and extremely knowledgeable. She lovingly described the dessert Fariyal had just shared in great detail, as well as suggesting a method of attack in order to fully appreciate the complexity of the levels of flavor. After another enlightening conversation with our new friends we said thank you to our hosts and ate yet one more delicious item.Great meals are created by passionate people. I hope I have been able to convey how incredible our food was by not only telling you but by sharing how passionate everyone at Hav and Mar is about what they do. -

Visiting from London UK. Wanted a different dining experience, which Hav&Mar did not let us down. The restaurant had a lovely vibe, the staff were some of the friendliest, professional and knowledgeable I have had the pleasure to meet. What a breath of fresh air to have our menu explained to us at great detail without asking. Was not made to feel out of place. Well done Hav&Mar I wish you were in UK as the food was incredible and like nothing I have tasted before. If I could give you more stars I would. -
