Wonderful wine bar with amazing food. Really enjoyed sitting outside, sipping an amazing orange wine, and eating delicious food. The truffles mushroom, baked cauliflower, delicate fish were perfect I’ll be back.

Everything about this wine bar is great. The food is high quality and extremely delicious. My boyfriend and I were blown away by every bite we had, and both agreed the food is one of the best in Manhattan. The wine selection is also excellent. The service is top tier, with both the owner and servers being extremely attentive and pleasant. You can tell that the owner puts pride into his work and cares deeply about every detail. I noticed him going from table to table and having real conversations about the food, and I enjoyed hearing about the story of the menu, and where he got all his ideas from. The atmosphere is also very relaxing and pleasant. I particularly liked the giraffe theme, and I thought the artwork featured on the walls was beautiful. Overall I had a great experience at The Purple Tongue and would love to go back.

I recently had the pleasure of having brunch with friends at The Purple Tongue, and it was a wonderful experience. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. The food was delicious, with perfect seasoning and fresh ingredients that really stood out. The pastries were a delightful treat, each bite better than the last. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and cozy, creating an intimate atmosphere perfect for gatherings. Though its not large, the size adds to its charm. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a delightful brunch spot!

Beautiful restaurant, wonderful service, the food and wine are delicious. They also do a range of sake cocktails which taste really good. It’s elegant, cozy spot to catch up with friends in mid town west/ Hell’s Kitchen area. I hope more people can discover and visit this place for a lovely meal/ night out.

  • Review 5 (2024-05-23 - Rating: 4)

Food is delicious but nothing was outstanding. They all met expectations so nothing to complain about.Very very friendly service. Had to knock off a star - we ordered matcha tiramisu as the dessert. My friends really want to try their matcha tiramisu on the menu. However the server didnt inform us that they only have the traditional tiramisu until they put it on our table. Had we known that the matcha tiramisu was no longer available, we wouldnt have ordered it. We were shocked and a little upset about the timing our server informed us. The regular tiramisu is okay, a little too sweet. They have wine flights and shochu cocktails (they dont taste like regular cocktails and you dont get to swap out with another one so be aware).Im not sure about visiting again in near future.Reservation not needed as they arent busy on weekday nights.Very quiet place in the center of the busy neighborhood.

  • Review 6 (2023-05-14 - Rating: 5)

The service was fantastic and the food was delicious. My friend had the endive salad which had a distinctly mustard flavor and was very yummy. I enjoyed the pasta and the primitivo. The cauliflower looked like it was cooked well and my friends said they enjoyed their asparagus soup.

Looking forward to try more!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic restaurant and I must say, it was an incredible experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of the evening. One of the things that stood out to me immediately was the extensive wine list. As a wine enthusiast, I was thrilled to see such a diverse and carefully curated selection. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helped me select the perfect bottle to pair with my meal.In addition to the impressive wine selection, the restaurant also boasts a rotating art gallery every month. It was such a delight to be surrounded by beautiful artwork as I enjoyed my meal.Speaking of the meal, it was absolutely delicious. Each dish was perfectly balanced and expertly prepared. The Burrata with roasted red beets, pistachio, and fresh herbs was a standout, as was the Mediterranean Grilled Octopus with roasted eggplant puree and black olive crumbs. The Short Ribs, which were slow roasted grass-fed beef with celery root puree, were tender and flavorful.I also appreciated the attention to detail in the presentation of each dish. The Cappellacci filled with ricotta & spinach and sautéed in butter & sage was not only delicious, but also beautifully presented. To top it all off, the coffee selection and desserts were equally impressive. The matcha tiramisu was out of this world and the perfect end to a truly memorable meal.Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. The combination of exceptional food, extensive wine selection, rotating art gallery, and impeccable service make for a truly wonderful dining experience.

So grateful to finally try The Purple Tongue. The wine selection is excellent. The food is delicious with some unique choices. The atmosphere is beautiful. Jazz on a chilly Friday night was a beautiful bonus. Looking forward to returning soon.

Such a marvelous experience, cant wait to be back. The service was excellent, the food was exquisite. But the best part was the team, they made the experience so much better. Peter and Marni were such a pleasure to meet as well.

  • Review 11 (2023-03-13 - Rating: 5)

What a gem! We came here during the week for happy hour, where we enjoyed the food so much that we ended up coming back again during that same week for the jazz event. Happy hour deals are great! For dinner, we shared the Bronzino, where the skin was super crispy and the fish was delicious. The entertainment was great where we had a lot of fun!

  • Review 12 (2023-01-03 - Rating: 5)

I LOVE THE SHORT RIB!!! It is the best thing ever:) seriously get it:)The roasted cauliflower is also really good and the octopus!!!The service is really good, they are really nice!Place is clean and beautiful❤️❤️The joseph jewel wine was awesome🍷Definitely a go!!!

  • Review 13 (2024-12-22 - Rating: 5)

Cute, quiet, intimate spot in Hell’s Kitchen not to be missed. Spectacular service, the waiter and waitress were very attentive, but not imposing. The food was beyond expectation, gluten free potato soup was so creamy without any cream. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy for the holidays. I live in the neighborhood and will be back.:)

  • Review 14 (2024-11-02 - Rating: 5)

Nice wine bar, friendly atmosphere, complete wine menu, exceptional customer service provided by Benjamin and Rufino

  • Review 15 (2024-03-30 - Rating: 5)

Another great night at TPT. The meatball continue to be the best Ive had in NYC which go perfectly with the nebbiolo. It is both light enough to have it on its own but has enough structure and tannins and acidity to up with a meal. If youre a fan of Italian food and wine definitely come by!

  • Review 16 (2024-10-20 - Rating: 5)

Had a wonderful dinner and wine flight on the outdoor patio (dog-friendly)! The short ribs are to die for. The affogato was literally icing on top! Staff was very friendly and accommodating with our pup. Will absolutely be returning!

  • Review 17 (2023-01-25 - Rating: 5)

What a wonderful dinner with friends! If youre looking for a delicious meal and an excellent wine selection, this is the place for you. My group shared the burrata, octopus and meatball appetizers to start and each one was better than the next. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, 10/10. For my main, I had the short ribs and they were perfectly tender and prepared to perfection. It was a lovely evening, with great food, wine and ambiance. Perfect for small groups, date night and/or a pre/post show meal. Will definitely return!

  • Review 18 (2022-12-20 - Rating: 5)

Great experience last night at The Purple Tounge with my friends! Food was outstanding, we ordered buttata, endives salad, salmon, cappellacci and short ribs… no words needed… just look at the pics!Amazing service and very nice atmosphere!

  • Review 19 (2023-09-20 - Rating: 5)

Love this place and keep coming back. Great service, great people, and clearly a neighborhood favorite with lots of regulars. This is my go-to before seeing a broadway show because they’re so fast with a nice menu and excellent wine. Included a photo of their endive salad, but everything I’ve had there is delicious! Highly recommend.

  • Review 20 (2024-05-27 - Rating: 5)

Excellent and expansive wine list. They put a lot of thought and care into the selections and supporting smaller producers around the world. And, try the coffee. It’s excellent too.

  • Review 21 (2023-07-10 - Rating: 5)

Our friends introduced us to this place and we’ve been telling everyone about it since! The owner, Pete, and our server, Ruth, were the perfect combination of attentive and respectful. Pete made great wine suggestions and Ruth helped us choose from the many fabulous dishes. The restaurant is gorgeous, everything on the menu is superior and the wines were delicious. Pete and his wife, Marni, provided a lovely evening and a great dining experience. Looking forward to going again soon!

The Purple Tongue was a great spot in the heart of Hells Kitchen steps away from the Theater District. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, with elegant surroundings, eclectic clientel, and beautiful art gracing the walls. The owners welcomed us, the staff was friendly, and the service was efficient, and inviting. The food and wine selections were abundant and the food was absolutely delicious. Well be definitely back. This was an absolutely great stop after our off Broadway play.

  • Review 26 (2024-07-01 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 28 (2024-07-26 - Rating: 5)

Beautiful spot! In light French style of cafe, with cute furniture setting and fan above your head, you know that cozy atmosphere in Europe. Food is limited choice but worth to try all, wine is carefully curated and will not disappoint you. Peter the owner of the restaurant is so hospital and nice to every visitor, i love his personal touch to every detail.Big shout to the team - so friendly and possitive guys, the Gem!My place to come back at any point!P.S. still question in my head - purple tongue name is from red Wine tasting or geeraph natural tongue (no wine involved) organic color 🤣😂🫶

  • Review 29 (2024-03-29 - Rating: 5)

What a gem this place is! The atmosphere and the staff are very welcoming and warm. Starting from the delicious wine, I had the Bold Red Flight, I was instantly transported back to my homeland (Puglia, Italy) though the masterfully prepared dishes. Apart from the super fresh Burrata and Ricotta, imported straight from Puglia every week, I was in awe of the Octopus and Mussels and I had the Daily Special, the Pasta alla Norma, perfectly at dente! The dessert was such a treat too, I had the matcha tiramisu, that I absolutely recommend! The cherry on top was listening to the wonderful Marty Elkins and her musicians, who provided the most enchanting soundtrack to a perfect dinner!

  • Review 30 (2024-05-12 - Rating: 5)

Everything was exceptional: food, service, and setting. Undoubtedly one of the best brunches I have had in the the city. The setting is warm, refined, and welcoming, with beautiful art pieces on display and enjoyable background music that ensures conversations are private without adding noise. The waitress was attentive, humorous, but never overbearing. The owner/ barista takes pride in his craft and will take time to explain kindly and passionately the different coffee offerings (which were remarkably flavorful and balanced). The frittata was fresh, fluffy, and perfectly seasoned. The avocado toast was delicious, with perfectly toasted bread covered with a generous amount of tasteful avocado mash. Those were topped with perfectly poached eggs that tasted farm-fresh, without any aftertaste. The pain au chocolat was a perfectly layered, airy and buttery scrumtiousness. This was such a delightful find. Will certainly be back to try the dinner menu.Update:Been back multiple times, never disappoints or wavers below exceptional in every single aspect. The attention to detail is in everything, down to the coffee which is much better than all the excellent coffee shops in the area. Eating here is an experience you owe yourselves. Regularly.

As a larger party, we tried a lot on the menu and can’t agree on the best plate. Everything was fantastic. The ambiance, and service were top notch. Apps, the winners were the anchovies and the meatballs. For entrees, the short ribs were, “melt in your mouth.” I loved every sip!

Great little spot for before or after the theater. The owner is a sweetheart! Born restauranteur. He came over and chatted amicably with our table about recent shows weve seen, who liked what. They were celebrating their 1 year anniversary of ownership and came by later to offer us cake! Food and drinks were delicious, service was great. Go!

We had an outstanding world class experience from the moment we walked into this beautifully designed space with a warm and majestic welcome by the brilliant owner Peter and his delightful wife Marni. The service was all about pleasing the customer as Chloe graciously set up a tasting of various wines in search of the perfect one for me! And the food was precise and perfect! Well balanced from the elegant presentation, to the exact temperature, tantalizing texture and simply delicious as the short ribs melted in my mouth! WOW! This is Michelin Grade quality! Despite an unexpected packed bar, the staff were very present and pleasant. The food was outstanding. The wine selection was excellent and offered a good variety. We appreciated not having to peruse an extensive list. We also appreciated their acknowledgement of our later theater plans to ensure there were no delays.

  • Review 41 (2024-04-27 - Rating: 5)

I love the ambiance and food. Just a moment ago there were 3 of these toasty delights but Im not the one to resist the beauty of these Cantabrian anchovies that according to the owner are hand fileted. I’ve never had duck prosciutto but this baby charq board made a believer out of me. We also had grilled salmon and meatballs. The handpicked wine and attentiveness of the owner made this my new neighborhood fave

  • Review 42 (2023-01-01 - Rating: 5)

Owners, Otis and Peter should be very proud of themselves. They have opened an elegant and sophisticated restaurant, wine bar and art gallery with a charming and unpretentious vibe. Very nice quality wine selection. Food was over the top good. Honestly, was the best restaurant food I’ve eaten in a very long time.We had grilled octopus- fresh, tender, bursting with flavor. Carrot and ginger soup- very hearty, delicious. Fillet mignon- cooked to perfection and succulent. Truffle gnocchi- wow, just wow! Finished with tiramisu and chocolate lava soufflé - seriously good, both of them.Food came out quickly, excellent service. Would give more stars but it won’t let me!!!

A beautiful and intimate modern interior and a fresh, interesting wine list curated by a knowledgable sommelier make the Purple Tongue a treat to visit. We stopped by after dinner and met the owner Pete who is very friendly and admired the giraffe themed decor and beautiful large modern paintings which adorn the walls. Well worth the visit. Will come back and have dinner.

Amazing vibe, international menu and the owner is the most friendly and welcome person you could expect to find. The chef is italian, which must be one of the reason why my burrata tasted exactly like in Italy. They are also specialized in international wines.

This is an ideal spot for pre- and post-theatre, especially if you love great wine, funky art, and friendly service. We had a quick (and delicious) meal before our 7 pm show and were tempted to return afterwards for more wine. My glass of cava was served in a classic champagne glass and my husbands flight of red wines was superb, all three glasses. We highly recommend and will definitely return soon. Favourite dishes: meatballs (with the red wine flight) and the burrata salad!

Away from the hustle of Hell’s Kitchen is this quaint neighborhood wine bar & restaurant that feels like home. As I walked past, I was somewhat shy about entering & the co-owner immediately greeted me with a smile & wave to come in. Let me tell you their wine selection is awesome along with the stellar customer service. I will be grabbing a quick bite while I’m in town for sure. Whether you are a local or visiting, be sure to check out this locally owned establishment. You won’t be disappointed.

Perfection! The Purple Tongue is so comfortable, it feels like home. A quaint-sized restaurant and wine bar (and also delightful sidewalk seating), on a beautiful residential tree-lined street, with the most personable owners (Peter and Marni) and staff (Rufino behind the bar is a perfect 10!). Superb and unique menu, huge wine selection, along with several wonderful beers, a perfect happy hour menu during the week and a heavenly brunch menu on the weekends. The moment I discovered this place a year and a half ago, I fell in love with it...and with the whole staff...and Im there at least twice a week. Its perfect not only for couples and groups, but also for single people. I highly recommend checking it out.

What a great find. Went here with 3 friends before a show. Lovely team who were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Delicious and thoughtful dishes, we tried a number, including the octopus, meatballs and mussels, which were standout. Lovely wine list which was decently priced. Also great looking space with really nice ambiance. We will definitely be back for more. Highly recommend a visit and makes a great option for pre theatre food.

I like the atmosphere of this place , look very neat and elegant. Service wise everything was ok too. The only thing is lucking is this place is food.First the dinner menu is super small , you getting 5 options for appetizer and 6 main. I understand that it is wine Bar and options is limited, however if menu is so limited food should be amazing. My husband and my mom order salmon , it was such a disappointment. The salmon was very bland and super fishy, side dish was back Choi with no seasoning. However my dish which is veal ragu was really good.We order burrata as well , and while the burrata was good the pistachios were rancid.Feel 50/50 about this place.Maybe the best just for wine and some small bites

Incredible! Easy and relaxed dining. Amazing food - we had the mussels, pan-seared salmon, and braised short rib, then finished it all off with the flourless chocolate cake and the panna cotta. Im getting hungry again just writing about it, LoL. Wonderful and very knowledgeable bartenders. And Peter! And live music most Friday nights!!!

I was meeting a friend at the Food Emporium just up the street and, since I arrived early, stopped in at the purple tongue for a glass of wine, and had the meatballs. The manager had exceptional, service, light hearted conversations. I was alone, and treated like family. (From Canada). I would highly recommend this quaint wine bar with sensational food. The artwork is beautiful, disappointing a little too large for my suitcase. Best evening in Manhattan! 5 stars for sure!

This spot is unexpectedly cool, considering the location. The wine options are varied and exceptional, the service is amazing, and if you’re fortunate to garner Rufino as your bartender, count yourself lucky. He’s got great recommendations, a wonderful bar side manner, and the loviest personality one could ask for!

Lovely neighborhood wine bar and restaurant, easy walking distance from theaters. Cozy ambience with excellent food. We started with the endive salad and got the salmon and cappelletti pasta special. Everything was well prepared, especially the fresh pasta. We also enjoyed our sweet vermouths.

This is an incredible neighborhood gem, and not because the food is so amazing, which it is, but because the owners greet you with such warmth and hospitality, that I feel like it’s a home away from home. Peter, Marni and Otis are so gracious, they welcome you at the door, and you instantly feel like you’re transported to a wine bar and eatery in Europe! There are a lot of regulars to come here from the neighborhood, and you feel like it’s becoming another Cheers, and it’s one of those places where there is a lot of great conversation ! This is a place for foodies, and you can tell such care is taken in the appetizers like the meatballs, the cauliflower and endive salad, as well as main courses, like the short ribs, which are to die for, as well as the salmon and branzino. They also have a superb, happy hour, or appetizers, or more affordable, and let me tell you, this is the place to be from 4 PM to 6 PM! You have to go here folks !!!!!!!

Our group of eight shared almost everything on the menu and all of the food was outstanding. The burrata and meatball appetizers, short ribs, mussels, tiramisu and pane cotta were my favorites. Service was very fine and though I am a beer drinker more than a wine lover, the pale ale was excellent! Highest recommendation.

The ownership and management here are awesome. This is a hidden gem. Friendly neighborhood restaurant with excellent food & drink. My wife and I just had the best Valentine’s dinner here and the owner gave us a dessert to go and kindly asked us to bring the glass bowl back in a few days (since we live in the area). The Purple Tongue definitely exceeds expectations.

What an amazing find! Freshest ingredients and the service was spectacular. Vegetarian frittata was full of tasty fresh veggies and the French toast with warmed maple syrup was divine. Attention to detail is superb. This will be a must anytime you’re in the city.

We stumbled on to this place after the theater. The food was great and the server was amazing...friendly and helpful. I recommend it even though its pricey. The special was chicken paillard topped with arugula and shaved parmesan. Loved it. And a dessert with berries and a kind of custard was delicious. Both were recommended by my wonderful server. Wish I knew her name. From Trinidad.

About last night… we rarely leave reviews or discuss about returning to the same restaurant. We are spoiled with the sea of restaurants NYC has to offer , but this Gem has won our hearts and we’ve already made reservations to return for brunch in a few days.Service was great , loved the vibe of the place from beginning to end. I fell in love with every dish, the pasta was definitely the star for me , reminded me of a dish I had in a Florence.Excellent wine menu. The owners were perfect hosts and can’t wait to return

At the end of our meal words such as nirvana were thrown around...If I were to solely describe the food itself that would be doing the establishment a disservice. On all fronts for a restaurant to be judged for The Purple Tongue would be coming up Aces.P.S.Order the Capellaci with bread on the side. Youll thank me later.
