This is a great, discrete cocktail bar in the theater district. There are no signs outside and it’s up a stoop, so you have to know it’s there. As a result, it’s not crowded. As someone who lives locally and goes to the theater a lot, I’ve been searching for a bar in the area that isn’t a generic pub. This place has a great atmosphere and friendly staff.

We had two good times in this bar last week. the atmosphere is warm and cozy. the boss is very welcoming. The first night we sat at the bar, and had a great time. special mention for the bartender who is extremely friendly, and who served us very good cocktails. we came back just for him the next day, and we once again had a very pleasant time. so thank you from two French people who enjoyed discovering this hidden and soothing place in a neighborhood with an effervescent atmosphere

Best deviled eggs we have ever had! Ate them all and then ordered some togo to eat back at the hotel... except we couldnt wait and ate them on the walk back!

  • Review 4 (2024-08-07 - Rating: 5)

Love this place after theatre. The varied, often updated, menu of small plates never disappoints.

  • Review 5 (2023-08-27 - Rating: 5)

On this crowded theater district street hides this little gem. A discreet brownstone door leads you into a dark and classy pre or better yet post theater bar. Go in. This place feels like it is here just for you! Wonderfully professional service from everyone inside. Terrific bartender and delicious and classy cocktails. Regulars and out of owners blend together and all treated with value. The food was top notch and absolutely delicious. I will be back as this bar rose to the ranks of my favorites!

Stopped in for drinks before a show. Very easy walk to most theaters. Place is very nice inside. Decor is tasteful, not flashy. Small bar area and booths. A few tables.Entrance is unmarked. Just walk up the steps and enter.Martini/Manhattan style drinks were served with a carafe on ice and a second small glass. See picture. Cool! We didn’t eat there so can’t comment. Friendly service. Prices are not too high. Usual bar prices, $16-$18 or so for cocktails.

  • Review 7 (2023-07-04 - Rating: 5)

Update: The bartenders name was Julianne, not Juliette. I have made the correction.I went here on a Saturday evening at 9:30. I was supposed to meet some friends at 10:00 a few blocks away, and I had looked up speakeasies in the Times Square area and this came up. It was the closest to the other venue and looked nice from the pics. As I approached the area where the entrance was supposed to be, I admit I was a little confused about how to get in; no signs, no bell, no knob. I (awkwardly) tried knocking and some people came out. I thought they were a family leaving their home, but they didnt seem disturbed by my presence, so I proceeded to push the door open. The waiting area is very small with a few seats. I was greeted by a very polite young lady with short blonde hair and she offered me a seat at the bar being that I was alone. The front four seats were available and I sat on the center right stool. They have hooks under the bar top where I hung my jacket. The bartender was a lovely young brunette named Julianne. She made me a fine Old Fashioned with Makers Mark. She was very friendly and engaging.I took the opportunity to look around. The place is very simple and modern without being pretentious. Light grey brick walls, black window frames and blinds, and some soft amber lighting. Before the bar, which is right across from the waiting area, there are some tables with seats scattered aside. To the right of the bar is a strip of booths before a mirror and a bathroom to the left of it. Nice single bathroom as well.I went into this place dressed in a tactical black jacket with patches on it, a black hoodie, black cargo pants, rain boots, and a keffiyeh wrapped around my head and a shemagh around my neck, and I was treated with the utmost respect. To be fair, I may dress a particular way, but I know my manners. I only mention this because Ive read some reviews about people being shunned or treated rudely based on this or that factor, as well as being turned away when theres space. I only had a cocktail and a beer and stayed about 30 minutes, but my experience here was very good as far as service and appearance. Its a nice hidden place good a for a conversation over drinks and perhaps a meal. Cant comment of the food, though. Maybe next time Ill get her earlier and have a bite as well. I had a nice little time by myself at Bar Centrale.

  • Review 8 (2023-07-09 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic before a show. They actually ask you when does your show start so that they can time it for you to make it on time. There aren’t many food options, really just a couple of small plates- so you should treat it as a bar only. Otherwise great vibes!

  • Review 9 (2023-03-18 - Rating: 4)

Love the way that it’s hidden in an apartment door. Speakeasy style and quiet place.

  • Review 10 (2018-08-31 - Rating: 5)

Very neat, upscale bar with a speakeasy feel in an unmarked old brown stone building. Cocktails are amazing, my favorite is the aviation. Food is good, many small plate options. Prices are high as expected for the area, but I believe worth it. We have brought a lot of visitors here and everyone always enjoys it. Staff is friendly. There is a no standing room policy, I highly recommend making reservations but they often have same day availability.

  • Review 11 (2023-01-06 - Rating: 5)

I almost dont want to write a review because I want to keep this all to myself. Bar Centrale has been my go-to spot for special celebrations, pre/post-theater drinks, and tasty bites when I need a pick-me-up for 10+ years. It never disappoints. There are many great veg options and I am not even veg! I love you, Bar Centrale! From your umamilicious tuna tacos to the scrumptious chickpea fries, you had me from first sip. Yep, you read that correctly. The drinks are also clutch and no frills, just thrills. Its a garden of earthly delights, AND BONUS, you can hear the person sitting across from you and you dont have to yell. Ill be back. I hope I can still get a reservation. Xoxo, BC!

Took my granddaughter and a friend to MSG for a concert, my son and daughter-in-law tagged along. Neither of them is comfortable driving in the city, hence my chauffers duties. Where to kill some time while waiting? We found ourselves in the Theater District, and I found this gem. My son was dressed from work, my DIL and I in much more casual clothes but we were made to feel right at home. A few small plates and some cocktails, a lovely space and really nice staff. My wife and I like to hit a few shows a year and this will be a stop before or after. Our server suggested calling about a week prior for a rez and said if you tell them which show youre seeing theyll know when to book you in; very helpful. Bar Centrale made our evening!

  • Review 13 (2017-12-17 - Rating: 5)

This was one of my favorite restaurants in NYC, because it was cozy, but not cramped, happening, but not so loud that we couldnt have a nice conversation. The food and cocktails were delish and the atmosphere chill. It is hard to spot though because it is a speakeasy with no sign...but maybe thats why I love it so much!

  • Review 14 (2018-01-14 - Rating: 5)

I love this bar as its secretly hidden in the most touristy location in NYC. From outside it looks like an apartment, but if youre in the know, or using Google maps, you will find it.Tucked nicely in the middle of Restaurant Row, this little bar boasts high end mixology cocktails and in a relaxed atmosphere. They have food too, but Ive never had it.Its difficult to get in without reservations, as its a small place and theyre strict. I recommend calling them in advance and I think they only take reservations up to a week in advance.

  • Review 15 (2020-02-04 - Rating: 5)

Bar Centrale, a secluded, unmarked bar housed in an old brownstone apartment, this spot is serving up speakeasy vibes and classic cocktails.Feel like you are walking into a residential building. But behind the door is a hostess and a restaurant. We sat at the bar, had a couple drinks but didn’t have a chance to try their food (was after dinner drinks).Great time to go is when everybody is at the theatre, great place for a drink.

  • Review 16 (2019-12-02 - Rating: 4)

Atmosphere is tops, and bartender was very nice. Manhattan was spot on, but the Old Fashioned was way too bitter. Would highly recommend for atmosphere, but better options for drinks if youre looking for top notch.

  • Review 17 (2020-05-26 - Rating: 4)

Edit: With a reservation, we got in just fine on a Sunday evening. It’s a quiet, private date spot where you can have a quality conversation ahead of a broadway show. Snacks were turned around quickly by the kitchen—it’s definitely a place where you order lots and share.Oct. ‘18: This bar would not seat our party of two without a reservation even though the bar had several empty chairs as did the seated tables. The hostess said, “We’ve reached our bar stool quota,” even though there were about four people seated there. It’s unfortunate as this place has been on “want to go” list for some time. Make a reservation.

  • Review 18 (2017-11-23 - Rating: 4)

Nice little exclusive speakeasy style bar in the theatre district on restaurant row.We were told this place can be a struggle to get into at times as they do like to uphold a certain type of clientele, especially as its known to be a spot where celebs visit when on Broadway or Times Square. We were dressed smart and as we walked in we were greeted and were able to check our jackets. We sat at the bar (rather than a table) as we were only going in for a drink, however they do serve food. They have a very 1920s prohibition feel in the bar with old pictures of New York and an old fashioned cash register behind the bar. Even the guy who was serving us had 1920s attire and even his moustache and goatee beard was very classic. The cocktail menu is basic, again only concentrating on the classics to mimic the prohibition era.I tried an aviation but it was far too sour for my taste. If you want to go somewhere exclusive feeling which isnt crowded and away from the tourist type bars, this is the place to go. However your drink prices will reflect this.

  • Review 19 (2021-04-05 - Rating: 5)

I really love Bar Centrale. I can’t wait for all of this pandemic stuff to be over, so I can pay my favorite speakeasy a visit. The whole vibe of the place was like nothing else. After all, it is not every day that you get a chance to feel like a gangster from the old movies. Sadly, there’s no scheduled opening date.If you’ve ever wondered what it felt like to hang out in a covert speakeasy, Bar Centrale is the place for you. The entrance is unmarked, so to anyone who doesn’t know what to look for, this bar appears to be a regular old brownstone. While you can linger with, say, a lovely Manhattan and cauliflower wings at Bar Centrale, chances are there’s another reason one has the good sense to reserve a table at this favorite from the Joe Allen empire: proximity to celebs. Don’t pass by this unassuming bar if you need somewhere to stop for a drink before or after a show, especially if you’re also feeling peckish. In addition to the wine and beer menu, Bar Centrale has a wide variety of food to offer, such as the shrimp cocktail, the Maine lobster quesadilla, and the flatbread pizza.

  • Review 20 (2018-10-17 - Rating: 5)

Classic bar, great food. Quiet place, not too small.A bit pricey.

  • Review 21 (2020-01-10 - Rating: 5)

This is a very nice hidden gem on 46th. Hard to get into before the theater so make reservations. Go after the theater crowd leaves if you can. Food is above standard. Drinks are good. It’s all a bit expensive but worth it. I put this place my regular visit list.

  • Review 22 (2018-08-12 - Rating: 5)

Upscale bar with great ambience. The decor lends to quiet conversation, and the drinks and food lend to interesting ones.We had traditional gin martinis and they wrote very good. They are served in cute carafes.

  • Review 23 (2017-02-12 - Rating: 5)

One of my absolute favourites in the neighbourhood - its really hidden up a set of brownstone steps, like youre going into someones apartment. A tad pricey, but the food is delicious (particularly the devilled eggs) and the cocktail and wine lists are full of wonderful options. Definitely need to book towards the end of the week, or if youre lucky you can snag a seat at the small bar.

  • Review 24 (2018-01-29 - Rating: 5)

Make a reservation! Amazing food and cocktails, had the most fabulous dirty gin martini and curry deviled eggs. Charming staff and space. A classy retreat from the usual midtown scene

  • Review 25 (2017-12-29 - Rating: 5)

It looks like you are walking into someones house since there is no sign on the door. We were impressed with the food and the atmosphere here. We had 3 of there small plates between the two of us and it was all so fresh & fantastic. I almost wished the portions were smaller so we could try more from the menu. You will need reservations.

  • Review 26 (2021-10-22 - Rating: 5)

See and be scene. ;)Make your reservation here even before buying bway tix. Great staple cocktails and perfect app menu. I try not to tell too many people about this spot. Sorry, no photos.

  • Review 27 (2022-06-10 - Rating: 5)

Great food, vibe, perfect for pre or post theatre. Cocktails are well made and staff is friendly, attentive, professional. The quintessential NYC place

  • Review 28 (2023-01-29 - Rating: 5)

The place locals go when they absolutely, positively cant avoid going to Times Square. Great drinks, tasty appetizers, excellent service, and quiet elegance.

  • Review 29 (2016-03-12 - Rating: 5)

Well I guess I cant spoil the secret more than zagats already did. Up the brownstone steps into someones house? No at this address is a nice little bar and restaurant, a little pricey but a good place to hang out apres-show while you sip cocktails and nibble on hors doeuvres. Reservations a must unless youre Robert Deniro, or an awesome local guide like me.Update: reservations a must, Bobby and I were turned away.

  • Review 30 (2018-02-17 - Rating: 4)

High marks for the exclusivity factor coupled with fantastic classic cocktails. The food wasnt impressive, but the vibe was chill and Id go back for a drink if I was in Midtown or had an out of town guest. Reservations are a must, they take them one week out, or you can grab a spot at the bar (no standing!)

  • Review 31 (2024-06-24 - Rating: 4)

This place was really fun! Its more a bar with food though than a real restaurant. Keep that in mind if you are planning to go here to eat before a show.

  • Review 32 (2022-09-23 - Rating: 4)

My dirty martini was tasty. Good ambiance. Food is pricey. Watch out for the step on your way to the bathroom.

  • Review 33 (2022-10-31 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 39 (2019-07-13 - Rating: 5)

Great place! If youre looking for a quiet place with an chill atmosphere in the heart of the theater district of Time Square, this is it. You have to look though no signs. 13 tables and an 8 seat bar with no standing area. It is a welcome relief to the madness that is downtown NYC. Off the beaten path and worth a stop.

Enjoyed my first experience at BC tonight during an impromptu meet up with beloveds visiting from the west coast. The ambiance, drinks, and food were beautiful, but what really made the experience exceptional was the banter and care extended to us by bartender Julianne. I can’t wait to go back!

Great space; feels very secret and exclusive (few tourists!)

  • Review 68 (2022-02-22 - Rating: 4)

This is the perfect hidden gem in the theatre district. An intimate and cozy cocktail bar perfect for pre or post show drinks and light bites. The drinks were more impressive than the food but the ambiance is the best asset. It is giving dimly lit, cozy, romantic vibes that you most definitely cant find any where else this close to Times Square. Would highly recommend for show goers!

  • Review 69 (2022-02-19 - Rating: 4)

Cozy, intimate speakeasy with good service and even better cocktails.

  • Review 70 (2023-02-14 - Rating: 5)

Yes- this is a low key speakeasy if you are around. Demographics is a bit older than your average bar. Try their cosmo

  • Review 71 (2017-07-18 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 74 (2019-07-23 - Rating: 5)

Great ambiance, service, food and drinks.

  • Review 75 (2019-12-02 - Rating: 5)

Perfect pre-theatre spot. A group of us grabbed some dinner here before seeing Hamilton and were all so pleased with the food, the service and the decor. The small plates made for a nice sharing vibe and the no-sign speakeasy style kept out a lot of the tourists. I live in the city and will definitely return even when I’m not catching a show. Chickpea fries were a standout.

  • Review 76 (2017-11-25 - Rating: 5)

Bar Centrale is just awesome. The service is great and the atmosphere is quintessential old New York but go for the food. The small plates are just fantastic. The guacamole is better than what you find in most Mexican restaurants, the shrimp and Chinese mushroom dumplings have a delicate wrapper, are plump and delicious, and the charred skirt steak has a perfect crust and is tender and juicy. The drinks also deserve high marks! Although a pre/post theater favorite, make it a point to go when you are not going to the theater and enjoy the experience.

  • Review 77 (2019-02-14 - Rating: 5)

This gem in Midtown is truly a place to take someone who you want to give a special theater district evening. Book seats or you wont get them, even at the bar. People watching is fun. Food is solid and drinks are great. Service is good but a bit of tude. Just go with it, its part of the vibe. If you cant get in go downstairs to Joe Allen the sister restaurant.

  • Review 78 (2018-01-25 - Rating: 4)

My sister and I headed here because we were told it was a speakeasy which Im sure it technically is. We were picturing something slightly More enigmatic or a touch scandalous considering that the concept was based on hidden bars during the prohibition. The only reference was a velvet drape you need to walk through to get to the hostess. That being said we were happy to sit with very well dressed New York yrs and drink a very well poured glass of fine pinot

  • Review 79 (2017-12-11 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 81 (2017-03-12 - Rating: 4)

Cool, hidden gem. At the top of a random set of steps is a insignificant door. Behind the door, however, is an awesome little bar. Good food, good drinks, great atmosphere. Would recommend

  • Review 82 (2019-05-08 - Rating: 4)

No frills bar in the theatre district. The entry is an unmarked flight of stairs between two restaurants. They have decent food and cocktails. We went here after a broadway show, if you are in the area and want a decent cocktail you should check out this place!

  • Review 83 (2016-12-16 - Rating: 4)

A great place to grab a cocktail and a light meal before the theater. The bar has no sign outside so you have to know where to go, but it is not hard to find if you have the address. The service is wonderful. The back room can get a bit noisy at times, so I prefer sitting out near the bar,

  • Review 84 (2017-04-02 - Rating: 5)

Where the cool kids hang after the theater. Like your chill friends living room: warm but hip. Great celebrity spotting. Reservations an absolute MUST. No exceptions.

  • Review 85 (2014-03-29 - Rating: 5)

Best pre- and post-theater spot! The cocktails are delicious and finely crafted (love that the shaken drinks come with a sidecar!). Ambiance is wonderful, feels like a private club. Love it here, just wish they had someone take reservations on the phone before 5pm. Great NYC secret spot!

  • Review 86 (2019-04-26 - Rating: 5)

My fiancé and I went to bar céntrale before a show recently. We sat at the bar since we were not able to get reservations (decided to go there last minute). The restaurant is inside a brownstone and it is great! The bartender was top notch, drinks were amazing, and the food was also great. The plates are small plates (at least at the bar) which was great for us, since we were able to share a couple plates. I would definitely recommend the Fish tacos.

  • Review 87 (2019-10-10 - Rating: 4)

Perfectly friendly semi hidden bar - no signs just push through the large wooden door up the steps at the address. Good service and an ideal place for a pre/post drink if you’re around the area for a broadway show. The bar is nice inside but not oozing a speakeasy etc vibe and some of the decor like the tables and chairs could do with an uplift. Drinks were nice but for some would be on the wrong side of being slightly too strong (not usually a complaint with cocktails but there is a right balance)

  • Review 88 (2017-09-18 - Rating: 5)

Quite place for post show drink. Perfect.

  • Review 89 (2018-08-01 - Rating: 5)

Great for drinks and late bites after a show. We went after Anastasia and had champagne, oysters, and tapas. Spotted Laura Linney there after Little Foxes. Reservations a must either pre or post show.

If you complain about this place, its because you probably didnt get in! You need a rez and you should! I love the fact that only the amount of people that can be seated is allowed in! keeps the place from getting mooky! Every place cant make everyone happy! Besides reviews are over rated. This isnt even a review.. its to say that there are hundreds if not a couple thousand bars/lounges in NY...cant please everyone, so find a place you do like.

Very inside-Theater (note the capital T) kind of place. But the food is good, almost as good as the people watching.
