Back for the first time in 6 years! Can’t believe it. I left thinking it was nothing much but on a whim, brought the family for dinner and had a really nice fun meal this evening of Xmas eve eve. Nice wine, satisfying food (soupe a l’oignon, onglet steak, burger), chill atmosphere. Look forward to being back. There is a nostalgia in the atmosphere or maybe we’re all just getting older and need an occasional reminder to find comfort in old neighborhood favorites like Bar Tabac. -

Good French Bistro in Murphy Street/Brooklyn, with live music. Good service and food -
Review 3 (2024-08-05 - Rating: 5)
Stopped in here for a midday, refreshing spritz. For a usually busy place, it was nice to experience a more quieter vibe during the week. -
Review 4 (2024-12-15 - Rating: 5)
A cool and hip restaurant that perfectly matches the vibe of the neighborhood. The food is delicious, the music is great, and the servers are very friendly. Their shakshuka, in particular, wasn’t overly salty and tasted amazing. -

Nice French restaurant— we went for brunch and the drinks and food were tasty, but the food was a little on the cold side. Service was pretty good— everyone is friendly and polite. I think they were setting up for a really large group which distracted people a bit. -

Went for brunch - simple restaurant inspired from French brasserie. No frills place that does the job and makes you feel in a true brasserie. Dishes were quite good, coffee was decent but nothing exceptional. -
Review 7 (2024-07-22 - Rating: 5)
One of my old favorites of the area. The interior is has weathered well always pleasant and friendly staff. The food was good, had lunch and will be back next time I’m in town. -

Had been meaning to try this place for a while. I was definitely missing out on great food. Went for brunch and had their baked eggs. They were absolutely delicious as was their coffee and fresh orange juice. Service was wonderful as well. I will definitely be back for more. -

Lunch time delight!French Onion Soup was great, I needed more salt but everything else was delicious. The mushroom & spinach quiche for the lunch special is superb. It tastes fresh and the flavors are great. My favorite part is the crust, not to hard not to soft. -
Review 10 (2024-07-27 - Rating: 4)
The food was great but the service left a lot to be desired. As I was leaving I heard a man say can you do me a huge favor and just make sure I get my beer this time! -
Review 11 (2024-05-30 - Rating: 5)
Our server Jeff was beyond helpful. He was working the bar, floor and outside too! Impressive. We went for lunch. The country pate with mustard was inspired and the Tuna on the Nicoise salad was perfectly cooked. 10/10 also a nice selection of beers and some decent wine too! -

Delicious options for lunch! My choice lobster bisque with creme fraiche was superb. Lovely wait staff and comfy outdoor setting. Great thank experience. -

Review 24 (2024-03-02 - Rating: 4)
Drinks were way too expensive for having little to no amount of alcohol. Food was good, not great, but the prices fit the taste/portions. Live music and fun crowd was the best.We would go back and just get food! -

The food was outstanding. The service was excellent- the staff are all friendly and attentive. They all work together to take care of you. The owners son was our server and he was so professional and courteous. I will definitely come back. -
Review 28 (2023-12-25 - Rating: 4)
The bar is a good vibe and the moules frites and spicy margs were solid. The service, unfortunately, not so much. Our bartender was (apparently) getting off their shift after taking our order, yet never told us nor the new bartender. We waited around for a bit, and no one helped us out or said anything, so I went to the bar to re-order. The new bartender was nice and made a great drink, and while apologetic, it was still a bit clueless...But, this stuff happens. Unfortunately, it happened twice tonight. We had a server come by later to check on us, and he took our food and second drink order. The drinks never showed nor did he check on us again. Food was very solid though. Were hoping it was just an off night for service and were going to give it another shot and Ill amend my review if so ... 🤞🏻 -
Review 29 (2022-11-21 - Rating: 5)
Absolutely sensational. First and foremost the food is exceptional. Great portion sizes. Really well made and tasted fresh. We had the croque monsieur and the Niçoise salad (the tuna was divine and seared to perfection). As if that’s not enough - live music, decently priced cocktails and a great ambience. Look forward to returning. -
Review 30 (2024-05-12 - Rating: 5)
Always a good time. Glad this Brooklyn neighborhood staple is still open. Solid French food and drinks! -
Review 31 (2023-09-07 - Rating: 5)
This place is as French as can be when youre in Brooklyn. The ambience, the decor, the music, the bottles on display, the food and drink menu.I had the tartar, and it was great! Will come back if Im in the area again! -
Review 32 (2021-09-19 - Rating: 4)
We heard this was a nice neighborhood place with good food. They also had very nice outdoor dining The only thing is the sidewalk is a little uneven there so you have to just watch your step sitting down. there happened to be a lot of flies at our first outdoor table so they very kindly moved us to another table which was absolutely fine... and as promised the food was excellent. We had the salmon over lentils, the calamari which has an incredible dipping sauce. as well as the salmon burger, the avocado salad and the goat cheese salad. everything was excellent -
Review 33 (2020-09-20 - Rating: 4)
Food and service were very good! For brunch we both had the free range chicken sandwich, and we were not disappointed. The brioche bun was a great pairing with the grilled chicken breast. The fries were fresh, and not oversalted. The salad was delicious, but i should have asked for the dressing on the side. I dont usually have dressing and would have preferred to pour just a tiny bit on.Spacing of tables for outdoor dining was very good, and the barrier between my table and the street traffic was pretty substantial. -
Review 34 (2019-06-16 - Rating: 5)
Great outdoor seating for a not too bad brunch price. Will visit again! -
Review 35 (2023-08-07 - Rating: 4)

Review 36 (2019-02-25 - Rating: 5)
A bit loud and hectic, but great food and fun. Great staff. Warm ambiance. -
Review 37 (2020-01-20 - Rating: 4)
This is my Brothers favorite place to go to brunch so much so that I think he eats there every week. I wasnt really eating just spectating the meal but everyone seemed to enjoy their brunch. The fries were really good. The service is fast. Its a popular spot in the neighborhood for a good reason. -
Review 38 (2017-12-27 - Rating: 5)
The food was lovely.... I planning a trip back. -
Review 39 (2023-10-05 - Rating: 4)
If you happen to be in the Boerum Hill area I would stop by and grab the salmon burger. It was juicy, lemony and super fresh. The calamari was also very well done, crispy and the sauce that comes with it was tangy and mildly spicy. I was not the biggest fan of the charcuterie board we got. The meats were regular cuts of deli meat and a patee that was good but I have no idea what it was made from. I still ate it though- it’s an acquired taste. I wouldn’t recommend it but if you’re in need to grab something to share then that’s a good idea. -
Review 40 (2023-03-14 - Rating: 5)
Stopped in here for drinks and appetizers and sat at the bar. The lighting is low, music at a good level, & the service was great. The calamari was perfection, French fries were pretty basic for truffle fries. But overall this is a great spot for quick bite, a date night, or solo dinner/drinks. -
Review 41 (2024-03-08 - Rating: 5)
Great food, fun atmosphere and nice service. Came on a Thursday night and there was a fantastic live band. -
Review 42 (2022-03-12 - Rating: 5)
Best eggs Benedict in the neighborhood. Ask for tomato and avocado on it. -
Review 43 (2024-09-22 - Rating: 5)
Great food nice staff. Strongly recommended. Onion soup amazing. Peche Melba not to miss!! -
Review 44 (2022-12-25 - Rating: 4)
This Clinton Hill staple has always risen to the top when it came to mouthwatering brunches, mussels, and steaks with a classic French accent.. The food has changed a bit lately, but the tireless service and homey ambiance still make this a great place to crash anytime, day or night. -
Review 45 (2018-04-03 - Rating: 4)
The escargots were fantastic!! (Pair that sauce with their super crispy bread!!). Their muscles were great. I wasnt a fan of their pate. Service was good. Price was fair for French food. They had live music when we went, so I suppose thats commonplace there. Be aware if youre not into that sort of thing with your meal. -
Review 46 (2018-11-13 - Rating: 5)
Awesome food and service. A true gem. -
Review 47 (2016-04-05 - Rating: 4)
Great little place, tasty, staff friendly but super busy.Popped in for drinks on the Saturday night, to scope it out for brunch next day. Were made very welcome, and enjoyed the vibe, and chatting to the staff.Brunch next day was very tasty, worth it for the Merguez alone, relaxed Mimosas, and lovely live jazz. Just dont go as early as we did, brunch is a more relaxed affair over there and we were done and dusted only a few songs in! -

Review 50 (2019-03-07 - Rating: 5)
Absolutely excellent. I cannot rave enough about the food here. The warm lentil salad was fantastic. The poached egg was perfect, the lentils, peppers, and bacon came together very well. The grilled chicken was delicious too! This place is a favorite of my partners, and she loved her chicken sandwich. And the fried calamari was some of the best I have had outside Italy -
Review 51 (2021-09-11 - Rating: 4)
My girlfriend and I visited for dinner. What we had:* I had the moules-frites marinières.* She had the steak frites and a crème brulée.* Also a glass of wine each. What we liked:* The food was pretty tasty. In particular, the mussels and their broth had a delicious flavor.* Our server was attentive enough for our tastes, but not so attentive that it felt like someone was breathing down our necks for the duration of the meal.* The outdoor dining area was around the corner from Smith Street, so it felt quieter and more private than the dining areas of many other restaurants nearby. We appreciated the plants. What we didnt like:* Texturally, a couple of the items did not seem quite right.* Roughly a third of the mussels were quite gritty, which is odd as the rest seemed completely clean. This is not a deal-breaker, as I understand it is difficult to rid molluscs entirely of sand and so on. Regardless I think a better job could have been done here.* The crust on the crème brulée was soggy rather than crisp. We suspect it had been torched in advance of service rather than à la minute. Again, not a deal-breaker, but there was room for improvement. For what its worth, it tasted great anyway.Overall a positive experience. We will probably visit again. I am curious to try their merguez sausage. -
Review 52 (2023-04-15 - Rating: 5)
Great french bistro with particular focus on brunch on Smith street, with live music and delicious eats! Extra points for the on tap Kronenbourg, helps feeling right back in France -
Review 53 (2021-08-22 - Rating: 5)
I went here for brunch and the food was delicious!!! It gives off a lovely French bistro vibe without the pretentiousness. Staff was great and made me feel welcomed. Try the omeletes a la carte! This place is always crowded and I see why. Great food, drinks, and atmosphere. Will be eating here again!! -
Review 54 (2023-10-06 - Rating: 5)
Great place for French casual food & atmosphere. Went there 3+ times, got steak frites, charcuterie board once. Recommend! Wish they would serve fresh baguette instead of rye bread with certain dishes though. -
Review 55 (2022-06-06 - Rating: 4)
The best stuff on the menu is definitely the salads. The warm artichoke and the duck confit are standout. Otherwise, its a pretty chill neighborhood bistro/diner with a good vibe, below-average bread and great outdoor space. As everyone else has mentioned the live music is a fantastic addition but its got a lively energy regardless. -
Review 56 (2015-04-26 - Rating: 5)
Stopped here on a whim on a beautiful spring day. We had our dog with us and they said no worries, hes welcome on the patio which was so nice. My husband and I thought this place was great, had bloody marys, eggs Norwegian, and a Shrimp appetizer. The staff was great and loved the atmosphere. Will definitely be back. -

Review 58 (2016-12-11 - Rating: 5)
The food was amazing! ! The service was just as amazing! Everyone was really nice and friendly. My friends and I decided to stop here for dinner after a long walk along the pier with our dogs. The restaurant had outdoor seating and they were very nice to dogs. Offering them water. -
Review 59 (2020-10-08 - Rating: 5)
We had an excellent lunch, sitting outside of their restaurant. They are not serving inside. The waiters were helpful and maintained social distancing. While they do not have their liquor license at the moment, we enjoyed excellent drinks and a wonderful lunch. I had the grilled chicken on a wrap with guacamole. My wife had their artichoke salad and another friend had their burger! -
Review 60 (2021-11-30 - Rating: 4)
Service was ok, great food and they had a band so it was loud, but a bit disconcerting that they filled the place and werent checking vaccine status at all. we wont be back until we get the all clear in the pandemic if thats how theyre going to do business. Id rather order in from them than risk exposure. -
Review 61 (2019-05-11 - Rating: 5)
They serve great breakfast too .... -
Review 62 (2020-01-25 - Rating: 5)
Very fancy. Low lighting. So romantic. I had calamari and my friend had the steak tartare. Expect to spend a decent amount of money here. Atmosphere is great. They had live music. -

Staff was friendly and helpful. The decor is quaint. The food was good but nothing that really left any of us overwhelmed; the escargot was very herby. Otherwise its a nice place. -
Review 68 (2018-08-31 - Rating: 5)
Congenial atmosphere, solid food, fun place. Lots of regulars and it feels like a fun, raucous community sitting at the bar. Tables are a mix of single people, young families with kids. Great atmosphere -

An incredibly authentic Parisian experience in the heart of Brooklyn. From the delicious French onion soup, to the tasty artichoke salad, everything on this menu will surely make your mouth water and make you glad to have dropped into this trendy neighborhood eatery. Bon appetit! -

Review 72 (2023-07-16 - Rating: 5)
A nice laid back restaurant. The food and cocktails were great. The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. We went for late lunch and the service was a little slow, however we didnt complain as the ambience was nice. The outside tables are spaced out enough unlike the cluttered NYC places. -
Review 73 (2020-07-25 - Rating: 5)
Outside terrace was spacious and with plenty of shadow. Steak was very tasty and cooked to perfection (medium rare). Service was professional and quick. Definitely would come back. -
Review 74 (2021-08-18 - Rating: 4)
STILL one of my favorite french bistros in Brooklyn! The warm lentil salad is now a new fave! Good news for those of you who DONT have AMEX - they now accept ALL credit cards! They havent updated the menu to reflect this fact as yet. Bon appetit! -
Review 75 (2018-09-28 - Rating: 5)
Bar Tabac is one of my favorite restaurants! The good is amazing, the music is great and the staff is friendly and lots of fun. My fiance is very finicky about food and Bar Tabac has become his go to spot. He even threw me a surprise birthday party their earlier this year. We had a private area in the back of the restaurant with personalized menus (Bon Anniversaire Tiffany!) offering a 3 course prix fix meal with superb choices. I had an amazing time and everyone else loved it as well. -
Review 76 (2023-06-03 - Rating: 5)

Review 78 (2012-04-07 - Rating: 4)
Nice place to grab a bite or drink with friends or on date, the food is very good and theres often live music which adds to the atmosphere. When its nice out they open up the windows, and theres also seating outside. The service is generally decent as well. -
Review 79 (2023-07-18 - Rating: 5)
Im a big fan of bar tabac! I live in the neighborhood nearby and whenever im in the area I make sure to stop by. everything on the menu is pretty classically french, not a riff on a classic so you know what youre getting into. the french onion soup, burger, niçoise, and frites were great. I love the jugs wine. on weekends they have live music which is a special treat! the staff is lovely and very french too. -
Review 80 (2017-03-26 - Rating: 5)
Great little French Bistro serving all the usual popular French dishes such as Coq au Vin and Steak Frites. Popular with families and couples but they only accept cash or amex (there is an ATM on site). Nice beers and cocktails, decent wine menu and really tasty food. Service was very good and quick! A great local choice. -

Review 83 (2016-01-27 - Rating: 4)
Good food - lovely salad, fries, onion soup. Loud clientele + music, crowded at dinnertime! Over all good ambience. Staff was nice but a bit rushed, then hovered for us to finish due to table demands. -
Review 84 (2021-04-23 - Rating: 5)
Love this spot because it’s got a cute outdoor setup and a solid menu. It is a bit pricey, but it’s a French bistro in Brooklyn so what do you expect? I’ll be back many more times I’m sure -
Review 85 (2021-12-21 - Rating: 5)
Very cozy Paris Bistro in Brooklyn...the 3 of us ordered dinner...most of food was yummy except for the Burger...Every top place like this needs to have a top burger...the one I got was small and way overcooked...just some friendly advice to this restaurant...need to make a much better Burger...not like one you would get in a coffee shop...Overalll this place was great: the vibe, the service and live music...I would definitely go back and recommend..TY -
Review 86 (2018-10-05 - Rating: 5)
One of the last remaining authentic Parisienne experiences in Brooklyn. Their staples are butter steak and muscles w fries. Check out the live jazz. Amazing date spot. -
Review 87 (2018-01-31 - Rating: 5)
Jazz duos by entrance on weekends. Building has solid urban grit of beauty. Lighting kept low. Food seems surprisingly good with a low or moderate price tag. Favorite. -
Review 88 (2016-07-24 - Rating: 5)

Review 90 (2023-02-15 - Rating: 5)
Great ambiance and amazing live music. Seems like a blip of a Parisian restaurant in Brooklyn. Food isn’t bad, but is mediocre for what I’d expect from the prices. -
Review 91 (2022-09-17 - Rating: 5)
I love this place. I have only been here for drinks but I made a point to come back. Love the little bar reminiscent of French tabacs (hence the name). Pleasant staff, charming barkeep, and highly recommend the Cobble Side cocktail- G&T with basil. -

Review 96 (2011-07-02 - Rating: 4)
Bar Tabac is a great spot if you want to escape to France for a little while. The live music is a highlight - and its also a good place to watch soccer or other sports popular in Europe. Try the seared tuna salad if theyre serving it. Half-priced wine night, too. -
Review 97 (2024-02-02 - Rating: 4)
Crowded ...Great wine list..great service..Decent food! -
Review 98 (2018-10-16 - Rating: 5)
Bar Tabac is a wonderful bistro, truly reminiscent of and modeled after a real Parisian bistro, in large measure due to the fact that the owners are French! Indeed, Bar Tabac, although a bit more casual than Bacchus on Atlantic Avenue, which I have reviewed previously, is related to Bacchus, in that the owners of both restaurants are French. The two restaurants celebrate July 14th, the French independence day, and Smith Street, on which Bar Tabac is located, is partially closed on that day, so that players can celebrate by playing the French equivalent of bacchi ball, pataque (?), which is a big game in French.I love Bar Tabac because you do truly feel as if you are in Paris, due to their decorations and their menu, which is quite French, with delicious French fries and poulet and caffe, etc. There are bistro style tables surrounding the restaurant on the outside, for they have a license for an outdoor cafe, and it is truly fun to sit outdoors on Smith Street, or on Dean Street, and while away the hours on a gorgeous Brooklyn sunny Sunday afternoon!!! Their wine and beer list is wonderful (as is the wine list at Bacchus, which is very special. I am not certain whether Bacchus serves beer). Also, to add to the ambiance of sitting outdoors on Dean Street, there is an adorable bakery and coffee/hot chocolate/hot apple cider in the fall, shop right next door to Bar Tabac, entitled One Girl Cookie. Suffice it to say that one can while away many magical hours in One Girl Cookie reading or working on the computer. I will try to review this place separately.Since this is a review of Bar Tabac, let me just reiterate that I love it here dearly, for its style and its food, especially on a Sunday afternoon, either indoors or out, and recommend this very special bistro very highly! -

Fast tasty French bistro with a lights out eggs Benedict and if you gave up cheese for lent don’t fret, the omelette maintains its deliciousness even without the fromage... listen to me, it’s like I’m speaking French now! -

Really fun atmosphere on a Thursday night. HH through 7pm, DELICIOUS merguez kebobs + frites were excellent of course. Seafood risotto was so tasty. Chocolate lava for dessert was nothing to write home about but still yummy! They also host some Bastille day celebrations in summer -

Smith St. staple for almost 20 years? solid french food, tight bar area, outdoor seating in season. They used to have a great live act on tuesdays, kind of rag time jazz swing grp. -

Authentic French bistro and cuisine. Bar Tabac looks like it could have been transplanted from the streets of Paris with French-speaking waiters and decor. The moules frites are flavorful and the fries and the perfect texture. I also highly recommend the creme brûlée and the burger. -

Review 142 (2023-09-19 - Rating: 5)
Excellent experiences here and I’m writing this review after my 4th visit. Each time I thought it was excellent and each time has been ever better than the last. I have to say, the calamari is amazing. I don’t usually order calamari and am not a fan of the fried version generally, but their version was perfect - tender, not even the slightest bit of greasiness from being fried and amazing flavor and the accompanying sauce really complimented the calamari and did not mask any of the flavor at all. If I lived closer I would go all the time. -

We enjoyed great wine recommended by their sommelier, Pierre, who is very attentive and kind, and were able to cut my birthday cake there. As a group of 16 we were able to book the back lounge for a cozy private experience. 10/10 -
