Café Riazor is an absolute gem in the heart of Chelsea, and it’s no wonder they’ve been a neighborhood favorite since 1974. This family-owned and operated Spanish restaurant combines decades of tradition with an inviting atmosphere, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic flavors and warm hospitality. From its beginnings as a cozy 9-table eatery, Café Riazor has grown while staying true to its roots. The Chef/Owner’s dedication shines through in every dish, with a menu that beautifully highlights the bold, rich flavors of Spain. Whether you’re enjoying their signature Camarones al Ajillo, savoring a plate of paella, or sipping on their incredible sangria, every bite is a journey to Spain. And here’s a fun fact: even Sarah Jessica Parker from the iconic TV shows Sex and the City and And Just Like That frequented this spot. It’s a true testament to how beloved Café Riazor is in New York’s dining scene! The service is top-notch, the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the food is nothing short of spectacular. Café Riazor has been a Chelsea staple for 50 years, and it’s clear why—they’ve mastered the art of creating unforgettable dining experiences.I can’t wait to return again for their delicious Camarones al Ajillo & Chorizo. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates authentic Spanish cuisine and a piece of NYC history.

This family-owned Spanish restaurant is a must-try! Everything we had was delicious and authentic. The sardines were perfectly grilled, the patatas bravas were crispy and flavorful, and the chorizo was flavorful. Dont miss the ham croquettes and the baked clams - they were incredible. The sangria was the perfect complement to our meal. Excellent service and a lively atmosphere, too. Highly recommend!

  • Review 3 (2024-12-30 - Rating: 5)

Café Riazor is a true Chelsea treasure that’s been serving authentic Spanish flavors for 50 years, and I only wish I had discovered it sooner! After reading the Eater article, “A Chelsea Hidden Gem Has Been Serving Tapas Greatest Hits for 50 Years,” I knew I had to try it—and let me tell you, I have no regrets. The Camarones al Ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce) is a must-order—juicy, perfectly cooked, and bursting with garlicky goodness. Pair it with their housemade sangria, and you’ve got yourself a winning combination. The flavors are bold, fresh, and completely unforgettable. And did you know? Even Sarah Jessica Parker, from Sex and the City and And Just Like That, was a regular here. Café Riazor has all the charm of a hidden gem with the reputation of a true New York institution.Whether you’re here for a cozy date night, a relaxed dinner with friends, or just to satisfy a craving for incredible Spanish cuisine, Café Riazor never disappoints. The warm ambiance, friendly staff, and standout dishes make every visit a memorable one.I can’t wait to go back for more Camarones al Ajillo! If you haven’t been to Café Riazor yet, take it from me—and Eater—this Chelsea classic is absolutely worth a visit.

This place offers old school Spanish tapas. Nothing flashy, nothing nouveau. Just comforting reliable small plates. We enjoyed garlic shrimp, pan con tomat, serrano & manchego, tortilla along with stuufed mushrooms. They came out of the kitchen quite rapidly. All were flavourful & simply prepared. The decor is likewise old school. But that just adds to the familiarity. Service throughout was low key but efficient.Craving some dishes from the 70s ? Head over to Cafe Riazor. They will take care of you & send you off happy.

  • Review 5 (2022-02-07 - Rating: 5)

Love this tapas spot! Great food that comes out very quickly, and the service is also very friendly. We got a whole bunch of tapas to share and enjoyed every one of them. Plus, the prices are decent and the drinks are good - can’t go wrong!

  • Review 6 (2022-06-23 - Rating: 5)

I have been to Cafe Riazor so many times in the past 15+ years that I have lost count. I still remember how I found the place with friends. We were looking for a good price place between Hella Kitchen and Financial District. Little did we know we have found our favorite Tapas place in the city. The staff has always been super friendly (sadly I dont know the name of the gentleman who has been there since the first time) the food is phenomenal and there is always a place to sit. One cant ask for more :). After all these years and tried many more places, some significantly pricier, I have yet to find a better place. Dont miss on the Paella Negra. Its perfect.

  • Review 7 (2021-06-18 - Rating: 5)

CHILL SPOT. Quiet when I came, didnt order much but I really just wanted to sit here and continue ppl watching. Stop by if you have the time. Ambiance really did it for me.

  • Review 8 (2018-06-01 - Rating: 5)

Very delicious Spanish cuisine. located near Chelsea Market. Very cozy and kind restaurant. I recommend of course Paelliia!

  • Review 9 (2024-06-07 - Rating: 5)

Nice spot for a quick tapas break! Really nice staff and tasty food. A bit overpriced but it’s Chelsea, so it’s okay

  • Review 10 (2023-11-17 - Rating: 5)

Classic Spanish Tapas 👌 in Chelsea Ny. Ordered 5-6 Tapas for a variety of tastes. A glass of Rioja and a White Sangria. Next time we must try the Seafood Paella. Service was great.

  • Review 11 (2019-01-22 - Rating: 5)

This is our go-to place whenever we have tickets at the Joyce. They are warm and friendly. The food is always tasty.

  • Review 12 (2022-10-27 - Rating: 5)

I didnt approve of the seafood dish but the bartender made the experience so awesome with the service. Cant blame the bartender for what she did not make. Also enjoyed the drinks offered. So 5 stars for the experience which I come out for.

  • Review 13 (2021-08-15 - Rating: 5)

Every bite is packed full of flavor. Food has homemade, authentic and wholesome feel to it. Their lunch specials are very reasonably priced, absolutely delicious and filling. This place might be the best tapas spot in the city. Service is very friendly. Highly recommend.

  • Review 14 (2024-05-11 - Rating: 5)

This place has been a family tradition for over 30 years. Always great food and the service is spot on. Always get the Paella De La Casa and the Riazor Clams, you won’t be disappointed! Enjoy!!

  • Review 15 (2024-10-04 - Rating: 5)

Adorar - I truly adore this place. When I lived nearby, I would often go more than once a week. I left NY years ago but still dream of this place and is one of the last Spanish institutional classics left in lower Manhattan. And in follow up recent visits, it stands the test of time. Same amazing staff I remember and same exceptional food too.Dont let this out of the way hole in the wall place fool you, the food is wonderful and always delicious. They also make their Sangira strong. And often would give us a complimentary sherry at the end of the meal. I rarely walked out less than pleasantly drunk and thoroughly satisfied. As for the food, the Paella and chorizo sandwich are both fantastic, but where this place truly shines is Tapas. Favorites included the gambas al ajillo, langostene a la plancha, the red wine sauteed chorizo, the boquoreones, tortilla espanol, and the manchego cheese and serrano ham and olives. They also have a desert coffee called the Cafe Riazor made with a special liquer called Liquor 43 among other delicious ingredients - including whipped cream, you know in case the meal and Sangria were not over the top satisfying enough. And of course, the flan is superb.Enjoy!

  • Review 16 (2023-12-10 - Rating: 5)

I love the interior of this place. A lot of decorations and nice traditional yet fun Spanish music in the background.I had the pork and rice which Id put solidly in the good category. Maybe not unique enough to go in the fantastic category. The pork was delicious although I got a slight dry taste from it, although still very good. Rice was yellow rice and a little bland for me but I think thats how they do it in Spain.

  • Review 17 (2018-05-02 - Rating: 5)

This is a good place to consider if you have free time from noon time to 7pm at their bar. Very helpful service, at least from my experience with the one who attended to us, and whos a member of the family who established this business over 40 years ago when Chelsea wasnt like it is now. Very good paella we had there.

  • Review 18 (2021-06-13 - Rating: 5)

Always a pleasure. Delicious food and a great service by Miriam and David. Best Spanish Restaurant in New York.

  • Review 19 (2022-10-09 - Rating: 5)

This is a cozy dining spanish food restaurant. It is family owned 50 years. Excellent Paella Marisco and Marisco Riazor. The female server has been here for 35 years. Great if you are concern about Covid they have partitions between tables, plexiglass. I would recommend 💯. There are stairs to go down to the resturant.

  • Review 20 (2024-10-31 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 21 (2024-09-14 - Rating: 4)

Terrific family owned Spanish Tapas restaurant.

  • Review 22 (2017-11-02 - Rating: 5)

Love this little tapas and full service Spanish restaurant. Understated but delicious, they have appetizers and full meals jam-packed with flavor. The staff is very friendly, accommodating and attentive. Standouts include the wine list, tortilla Espanola and pernil.Unfortunately, the restaurant is not wheelchair-accessible as it requires stepping down a few steps and the restrooms are beyond narrow doorways.

  • Review 23 (2019-07-22 - Rating: 5)

The food is excellent!! And the service can’t be better! We’ll be back soon!!

  • Review 24 (2024-05-09 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 25 (2020-08-30 - Rating: 5)

Incredible tapas, mushrooms, chorizo in wine sauce, octopus, just let the waiter/owner pick your dishes and you wont be disappointed. Small family owned, one of NYCs remaining hidden gems....and the best flan on the planet...

  • Review 26 (2021-09-19 - Rating: 4)

9/18/21 update: stopped in for a snack, I had stuffed mushrooms and mussels. Both were really good and just the right amount of food. Good service.4/10/21:We stopped in for my late night snack.Sat in the special outdoor space, it was cozy but felt fine.I had the octopus tappas, yellow rice and a beer. All was very good.Service still great. Still want to come back and eat so much more.We went for dinner. Service was great! Had white sangria, (ok), pulpo and calamari for tapas (excellent) and paella de la casa for our meal. The paella was just ok, even with half a tiny lobster tail, it should have had more clams, mussels, sausage and better chicken. Two Clams & three Mussels doesnt cut it. Neither does two small bony pieces of chicken and one wing. A wing... Really? And about 5 microscopic pieces of sausage... That is the cheapest protein in the dish and there was barely any in there. That made it a bland dish. Such a bummer. The chef needs to step it up!We will return! For the tapas... Our octo and squid was amazing! And well worth it, so go there and try!All staff were very friendly and service was excellent. A welcoming atmosphere, we liked that very much. So, thanks for a nice time :)

  • Review 27 (2021-01-21 - Rating: 5)

We are here for Christmas and it was lovely. Their food is great, theyve been around for ages. Their outdoor dining is warm and cozy but with decent air flow.

  • Review 28 (2024-11-23 - Rating: 5)

The paella is the best love it

  • Review 29 (2021-03-13 - Rating: 5)

The service is amazing. David was the MVP of the night. Right on top of everything and made sure that we felt comfortable. This place has a solid vibe. It made me feel that I was in Spain. La madre patria. Que viva España!!

  • Review 30 (2021-10-16 - Rating: 5)

Been meaning to come here after Sarah Jessica Parker revealed this is one of her favorite spots in town. Did not disappoint. Loved the tapas especially the chorizo asado. The jamón Serrano was cut a tad bit thicker than usual but oh so decadent. We had the paella a la casa which was hearty. No soccarat though but feels like your gran made it, if she happens to be Spanish. The rioja house wine was also good.Lastly, had the chocolate cake for dessert which was a nice touch in the end.My only complaint is that the restaurant was grossly undermanned tonight, front & back of the house. Could be part of the massive workforce shortage at the moment. We had to wait for around 45 mins for the first round of food to arrive.Anyway, I hope this gets resolved as it affects the restaurant’s integrity which is a shame as the food is precious.

  • Review 31 (2016-03-27 - Rating: 4)

Solid, family style Spanish restaurant. Food is good, especially the paella. Service friendly and professional. The restaurant itself, being in a basement, feels a little cramped, but this isnt a serious issue.

  • Review 46 (2024-02-23 - Rating: 5)

My sister & I stumbled upon this place one day and it was the happiest coincidence. We spent part of our childhood in Euskadi país vasco and the food at Cafe Riazor transported us back to our time in Donostia! I swore to my sister it was the most authentic, feels-like-home Spanish food I have had in the US. I took some friends back here and had the exact same experience. Good Spanish comfort food with a nostalgic atmosphere.

  • Review 63 (2020-02-23 - Rating: 4)

The food was good, and waiters very nice, and the place looks authentic. We had a few tapas, fish fillet with lemon and paella negra.Mostly, it was good. The fish was quite good. The paella was a bit too salty, had a lot of squid ink (didnt like that much), and didnt have the smoky flavor Im used to in paellas. The tapas were good for the most part.Service was very slow (we came in before the rush hour). We prepares for a 40 minutes paella preparation but it was closer to an hour and half.Overall, it was good, but Im not going there again.

  • Review 98 (2015-06-24 - Rating: 5)

The food and service has improved tremendously. I have frequented this restaurant for thirty -five years.

  • Review 99 (2015-08-13 - Rating: 5)

I was there yesterday. Unfortunately, I fell just as I was reaching to open the door, after having negociated the four steps leading down to the entrance. Once inside, we were surprised to find it empty at 1.00 PM. We asked for a tapa of mussels in sauce, (enough for two), and two versions of the house specialty, veal. Each one got three filets plus a serving of yellow rice. The food is high quality and not overpriced. Unfortunately, that does not apply to the wine list: we paid $46 for a bottle of Marques del Riscal Reserva which is usually $10 at a liquor store. Only one waitress taking care of the place, but since we were by ourselves, very attentive service. Its survival rate is amazing: a 40 year old restaurant in Chelsea! We plan to go back.

Delicious, we ordered black seafood paella and another with yellow rice, it was too delicious and for dessert a delicious Santiago cake (almond), I recommend it, it is Spanish food, the service is top-notch and everything was impeccable

Last night I was at my favorite restaurant at Chelsea Cafe Riazor. Enjoying my favorite Tapas, El Chorizado en Vino, El Pulpo A La Gallega, Las Croquetas de jamón, Los Shrimps Ajillo, as an appetizer and I couldnt stop ordering my Riazor chicken with the fries.

Everything was absolutely delicious, we tried many tapas, the most innovative thing is that Ill give you a photo of the first entree that we loved. Sausages with wine.A very nice place set in Spain, taking us to a European experience in the United States.
