This was a pleasant surprise at the end of a seven day visit to Manhattan. Wed had a lot of mixed results with restaurants on this trip, and when we saw that this was in place with a lot of other restaurants, we had our doubts. Turned out to be a great restaurant with tasty food. Were fond of German cuisine and have it often. Service was also great. I was a bit surprised that the server had never heard of Schnitzel ala Holstein, but theirs was good.

  • Review 2 (2024-11-14 - Rating: 5)

When I come here, I am treated like family. The service is incredible and the food is incredible. Long live this very special, authentic spot. Nothing like delicious Austrian food and dessert with a nice beer and schnapps to wash it down. Ambiance is on point and makes you feel like you are not in the US.

  • Review 3 (2024-01-12 - Rating: 4)

This place is in the heart of the LES. The food was delicious even after the next day when I brought home some leftovers. The service staff was friendly. The restaurant itself is nice too. The only thing that brought the review down is the cost. It could have been not as pricey. As good as it is, the price was high. Thank you for a lovely meal!

  • Review 4 (2024-06-22 - Rating: 5)

Best wienerschnitzel and beef goulash I’ve had in Manhattan. Everything on the menu was A+, with the exception of an extremely dry pretzel. Staff was a bit slow, but very attentive once they made their way to our table.

  • Review 5 (2024-04-28 - Rating: 5)

Surprise visit, just walked in. Food looks on the heavy side, but its not. The austrian sausage with saurkraut was excellent. Very friendly staff squeezed us in on the bar

  • Review 6 (2024-09-12 - Rating: 4)

Went in here for a quick beer on our last night in NY. Friendly service and good beer however slightly over priced.

  • Review 7 (2023-05-15 - Rating: 5)

Came for brunch on a Sunday at noon. Pet friendly establishment - we sat outside with our dog and they gave him a water bowl. The food is delicious. Don’t miss the asparagus menu - We loved the vinaigrette one. The buttermilk pancake is a must too. Would definitely come back

  • Review 8 (2023-12-09 - Rating: 5)

Came here for some after work drinks and small bites. We were able to be seated quickly. Nice list of cocktails and they have an extensive beer list. As for small bites, highly recommend the pretzel. Theyre small so would recommend one per person. Huge fan of the mustard. The charcuterie boards are interesting as they only have one cheese and one meat but not a combination of both which was unfortunate since one of us couldnt have cheese and another couldnt have pork/meat. We ended up sticking with the meat platter and the patte was great. Would consider coming back for dinner.

  • Review 9 (2024-09-09 - Rating: 4)

I had the schnitzel, the breadcrumb coating was beautifully crisp and and the pork tender. Huge portion! Loved the pickled onions on the salad. Drinks were Amazon. Most attentive servers ever and they were easy on the eyes, smart move have an all woman team, very efficient.

  • Review 10 (2019-03-25 - Rating: 4)

Great neighborhood restaurant serving up German and Austrian classics. Nice and cozy interior. Food is delicious and well-prepared. Service is friendly, though the beginning could have been a little more attentive and consistent. Nonetheless, had a great experience and would certainly come back for another drink and meal!

  • Review 11 (2019-11-24 - Rating: 5)

We started our lunch with a delicious pretzel that was straight from oven. My husbands Weiner Schnitzel was as big as his large plate and he substituted spetzel for whatever was supposed to be his side. The spetzel was some of the best I tried. I forgot the name of my dish, but it was basically two frankfurters with cheese and wrapped in bacon. Yummy. The service was quite good. Great place to dine at if youre visiting the Tenement Museum, since it is very close.

  • Review 12 (2024-10-12 - Rating: 5)

Came here for dinner on a Wednesday and sat outside. The food was great. We got the pretzel and herring beet salad to start and the Emmentaler and schnitzel as entrees. Our server felt distracted even though we were one of 3-4 tables in the building so we had to wait for water and check etc

  • Review 13 (2022-06-14 - Rating: 5)

Great brunch spot! They have a really good selection of food and drinks. I really enjoyed the food, it was delicious and everything was cooked perfectly and the presentation was nice. Make sure to try their sausages, it was really good.

  • Review 14 (2023-07-26 - Rating: 4)

Austrian food, the delightful blend of traditional flavors. Love the smooth and creamy Liverwurst!”

  • Review 15 (2024-08-27 - Rating: 5)

Had some extra time on Sunday and wanted a cozy place to relax. I found it! It was just what I was looking for. The bartender, Miri, made the best drinks. I had a margarita and Tequila Sunrise. When I get some more free time, which is almost never, I will be back.

  • Review 16 (2023-02-13 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. The food is excellent and the true steins of beer are spectacular. I cant recommend the pork belly reuben enough; possibly the greatest sandwich ever. (The pic is for one sandwich. Yes, on top of being delicious, its huge!) Great environment!

  • Review 17 (2024-09-05 - Rating: 5)

Great beer and sausage. This place is a staple, come hungry and thirsty. Sausage sampler, spatzel, cabbage, carrots, meatballs

  • Review 18 (2024-09-01 - Rating: 5)

Amazing cocktails. I was not feeling so well and needed a nice, mellow drink. They had the perfect thing. Wonderful hospitality.

  • Review 19 (2024-05-02 - Rating: 5)

Haven’t been disappointed yet. Tasty draughts, great food, and decent service. Now a LES staple for me.

  • Review 20 (2021-09-15 - Rating: 5)

Amazing Austrian food and very generous amount! The service was very nice and friendly. Totally recommend for a dinner with some cocktails.

  • Review 21 (2024-12-28 - Rating: 5)

Such great authentic Austrian food and amazing wines.

  • Review 22 (2021-08-21 - Rating: 5)

Stumbled upon this gem looking for a drink after the Van Gogh experience, but stayed for a lovely dinner. Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle and salad (huge portion!) followed by apple Strudel with Schlag was simply devine! The service was very attentive and the atmosphere cozy and gemütlich. Will definitely be back!

  • Review 23 (2023-04-20 - Rating: 5)

I was surprised how authentic it is from the cucumber salad to the mustard. I will definitely return. Come and check it out its a relaxing atmosphere sitting outside...

  • Review 24 (2024-04-13 - Rating: 4)

Best apple strudel I have had, a thin layer of crispy pastry surrounding the tart sweet apple

  • Review 25 (2024-04-27 - Rating: 5)

First time in New York with my family and I, ironically enough my mother is German and her name is Katja so this made us want to check it out and we were extremely impressed, great service and loved the food! We came back a second time within the same week of us being in town, definitely recommend and it’s great to see establishments such as this in the states!

  • Review 26 (2022-02-12 - Rating: 5)

This restaurant is a hidden gem/ great ambiance. Amazing food and friendly service oriented staff

  • Review 27 (2024-07-20 - Rating: 5)

Authentic Austrian fare served by passionate people who know what they’re doing. You can’t miss out on this place! Erwin and Andrew were both incredibly hospitable and generous.

  • Review 28 (2021-07-09 - Rating: 5)

Delicious Austrian / German food at reasonable prices. Great place for a heavy brunch.

  • Review 29 (2024-06-29 - Rating: 5)

We had dinner at this charming Austrian restaurant on our trip to NYC recently. The Frittanen soup, trout, Beef Gulasch and Kale Caesar salad were all delicious. We sat outside to enjoy the mild weather and soak up the atmosphere.

  • Review 30 (2024-04-14 - Rating: 5)

Loved cafe Katja! Been here a few times and the food was always good. This time we had the schnitzel and the jägerschnitzel and they were both delicious. Extra point for our server who was willing to accommodate the last minute change to our order. We were lucky to be seated next to their semi opened kitchen, and it was fun to see their very efficient kitchen operation (also super clean kitchen!). Around spring time they also have specials with white asparagus, we will have to return and try.

  • Review 31 (2020-03-03 - Rating: 5)

Wonderful service and delicious schnitzel! The pretzel is small but worth it. For dessert, the chocolate cake is to die for!

  • Review 32 (2019-02-08 - Rating: 5)

Amazing Home Cooked meals, Great Service, and Friendly Staff! The owner is very lovely lady obviously cares about what she does and made us feel incredibly welcome! Her apple pie is the best!:) Great Place! Thank YOU!

  • Review 33 (2023-08-23 - Rating: 5)

Cafe Katja is a unique jewel in the NYC restaurant crown. 👑 This eatery specializes in Austrian cuisine and completes the menu with authentic drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Chef and host Erwin Schröttner is both welcoming and gracious, and infuses the passion and pride of his Austrian 🇦🇹 heritage into his cooking. The vibe is casual here at Cafe Katja. This neighborhood is lively, young, and pedestrian friendly. Outdoor dining is available. Indoor dining is set amidst brick-lined walls. And I highly recommend the schnitzel!

  • Review 34 (2024-10-03 - Rating: 5)

Coffee stop only. Great coffee & atmosphere. Would like to return for dinner before leaving. Thank you

  • Review 35 (2023-05-16 - Rating: 5)

Hands down the Best Austrian Cafe in New York. The variety and quality of the menu is top notch. The schnitzels and Viennese desserts are as good as you’ll find in the best cafes in Vienna. They also have a great variety of Schnapps. Quaintly located in the lowest east side, the cafe has a bustling atmosphere, pretty ambiance and a great staff that make it a very homely feeling. Must visit.

  • Review 36 (2023-01-15 - Rating: 5)

What a great find. Place is always packed, but in a good way. The waiters are friendly attentive and fast. Unpretentious great food and service. The fried chicken thighs with mashed potatoes were out of this world. Beer is always fresh and the atmosphere is lively. Would absolutely recommend going during these cold winter nights.

  • Review 37 (2024-04-13 - Rating: 5)

Authentic food and very good portion size. My husband I shared an apple strudel for dessert. Definitely worth having dessert after your meal .

  • Review 38 (2018-03-10 - Rating: 5)

Delicious! I didnt get pictures of the dessert bc they were so yummy we gobbled them up so quickly!!!

  • Review 39 (2023-01-27 - Rating: 4)

Great food and location! Their spätzels tender and delicious with gravy. Good beer selection, but when it comes in a bottle, I would prefer to pour my own (waitress tried to pour it for me, I suppose to perpetuate the upscale feel, but ended up turning it into a foamy-then-flat disaster; I insisted on pouring for the second round). Also, be forewarned that this place gets packed and so theres a good chance youll get a table thats not really large enough for a drink and a plate (plus, youll have to keep an eye on your table, to keep items from being pulled off as people squeeze by). Layout-wise its not a place I would consider disabled friendly. That said, the food is tasty and they do have rotating specials.

  • Review 40 (2023-09-02 - Rating: 4)

Very nice German/Austrian restaurant, prices of the food are a bit on the high side, but you get well cooked and big portions. The drinks are relatively cheaper, and the beer selection is very good. All in all definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for German/Austrian food!

  • Review 41 (2020-01-23 - Rating: 5)

Great beer choices and the sausage sampler was incredible, with equally great pretzel appetizers. Good for groups and service was quick and awesome!

  • Review 42 (2024-01-15 - Rating: 5)

First bar/restaurant I found in NYC with an authentic Austrian vibe. The food was good. A lot of Austrian options! The employees were very friendly. I’m definitely going back.

  • Review 43 (2024-02-04 - Rating: 5)

Great spot for hearty food and wonderful staff. They make their own sausages/brats and they are the best. The schnitzel is outstanding as well.

  • Review 44 (2023-05-15 - Rating: 5)

Very cute, friendly joint which offers yummy Austrian food, fun drinks all in a cozy atmosphere. The outdoor seating situation is really great for people watching, whether you want sun or shade. Pet friendly too! 🐕

  • Review 45 (2025-01-01 - Rating: 5)

Literally stumbled across this jem on NYE while we waited to go to our NYE party. We ordered the Austrian charcuterie board and goulash, it hit the spot for sure!!! Customer service was on point! Just a chill spot to wine and dine.

  • Review 46 (2023-07-12 - Rating: 4)

    4. Came here for a quick drink and snack before dinner. The menu looks great and would have loved to stay and eat some more of the European classics. The atmosphere was nice- we sat outside, but it was a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty which was weird- perhaps it draws a later crowd. The beer list was good and the pretzel was great. It came with butter and what they said was cheese (didn’t taste like cheese- more like cheesy butter?) and Dijon! It’s in a great neighbourhood with lots of other bars and restaurants nearby- great for a quick drink. There are steps to get inside.

  • Review 47 (2020-02-04 - Rating: 5)

Simply delicious, the place is also warm and welcoming. Try the lunch menu, it includes samples of different dish not included in the dinner menu.

  • Review 48 (2024-04-13 - Rating: 4)

Austrian and simple. Very chill and authentic. LES hidden gem. Great brunch place.

  • Review 49 (2023-06-16 - Rating: 5)

While in Manhattan, I had a taste for German food, and my friend who lived there recommended Cafe Katja. What an excellent experience. The atmosphere was really nice (although slightly loud on a crowded weekend evening, but to be expected). The beer selection (Hofbrau, Spaten, etc.) was right up my alley. And the food was excellent. I went with the Goulash with absolutely no regrets. Our entire party loved it. I promptly returned on my next visit to the area, and plan to return again. Recommend.

  • Review 50 (2022-12-28 - Rating: 4)

Solid place for Austrian food, though one of the more expensive options for this type of food. The goulash and spaetzle was nice on a cold night, but the schnitzel tasted like it had been reheated. The beer list was nice—would go again to try the wursts

  • Review 51 (2022-07-01 - Rating: 4)

Good spot for Austrian, German food. The food is great. However, a little pricy for what you get - the schnitzels are very expensive (they are just meat cutlet). It has pub vibes and the service is good. I would recommend trying it! Beef goulash was my favourite.

  • Review 52 (2024-02-25 - Rating: 5)

Austrian style food and drinks. First Wiener Schnitzel in New York and it was delicious. Also the Stiegl beer (draft) woke up some memories from vacation in Austria. Super friendly staff and cozy atmosphere on top.

  • Review 53 (2024-08-08 - Rating: 5)

Loved the schnitzel and beer. Great service.

  • Review 54 (2024-10-06 - Rating: 5)

Where do I even begin? I received exceptional service tonight by a lovely woman named Anna. She greeted me with such kindness and was very attentive with my table the entire night. The food and drinks were also great. I will definitely be returning!

  • Review 55 (2020-03-01 - Rating: 5)

First and foremost, Cafe Katja has excellent food. The setting is intimate and their menu consists of authentic Bavarian meals. The beers are great and this is coming from someone who does not enjoy beer. I had the Spaten 0.3 L; if I wasnt driving home I would have gladly enjoyed a Stein. I loved the liverwurst and the homemade pretzels are delicious but a bit small. One pretzel is for about 1-2 people. Their homemade mustard is excellent but very spicy so be careful with your portions. Overall, I plan to return here again in the future.

  • Review 56 (2017-10-30 - Rating: 5)

Came here for brunch a few times and was always able to find seats. The food is delicious here and they have a great selection of beer!

  • Review 57 (2020-11-22 - Rating: 5)

Amazing food, great service, everything was amazing! We tried the beet salad, Austrian meatballs, garlicky greens, Apple strudel and all was amazing! I can’t wait to come back to try more dishes! The cocktails were so well balanced and had special aspects to each! Highly recommend!

  • Review 58 (2018-03-10 - Rating: 5)

Great food, atmosphere, and hospitality! I was impressed that the owner made a special point to greet us farewell on the way out, thanking everyone in our group for visiting. We had the cheese sampler, sausages and bratwurst, and fish entrees, plus three of their desserts including strudel and crepe. Topped off with a satisfying beer, wine, and cocktails. Five star experience all around!

  • Review 59 (2017-07-30 - Rating: 5)

Great, casual Austrian place. Cant wait to go back. The Schnitzel was properly cooked, which is something of a rarity in NY in my experience, since most places fry it to death. And it came with the berry sauce! Also, good selection of German and Austrian beers. I was very happy about the Stiegl on tap.

  • Review 60 (2023-02-04 - Rating: 5)

The best meal I ever had as well as my family. Great food, great service and immaculately clean! Make sure to have Beer because they serve the best. Tchuss!

  • Review 61 (2016-09-24 - Rating: 5)

This place has been on my radar for a while, and after attending a fun event in Lower East Side, we decided to head over for dinner. They had their large windows facing the street open, which made it feel like the dining area was extended into the outside, making the large space even more spacious. The inside was quite large, bigger than it looks from the outside. There is a main dining area when you walk in, with a nice size bar taking up half (or more than half) the room. But, the dining area extends to the left, with booth seating and larger table seating that can accommodate larger groups of people. We started off with a beer, and of course, right after the first sip, we had to have their warm pretzel…! Well, it was more like steaming hot pretzel, it was great! As for the main dish, we wanted to try their Assorted Sausage Sampler which I heard great things about. It comes with several kinds of sausages, pork belly, sauerkraut, and dumplings. Most of everything is home-made right there at the restaurant, including sauerkraut and dumplings. The sausages were huge, plump, super juicy and packed with flavor. The service was very friendly, our server was super nice, she took a good care of us. She made us feel welcomed with a warm smile, made sure we had everything we needed. I would love to go back for more great food, maybe a brunch on a weekend… Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

Great pretzels for appetizers, love the atmosphere, its a very cool neighborhood for bars and restaurants. The service here is great, always welcoming. I love dining here. Andrew is a very sweet host! Ive been coming here for a few years and I love it. Always consistent food.

  • Review 64 (2024-11-12 - Rating: 5)

Cozy setting for delicious food. We split a pretzel and I had the seasonal spätzle which was filling and flavorful.

  • Review 65 (2023-05-11 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite restaurants in the city, have come for many occasions, including using Wi-Fi and their lovely espresso. Recommend the sausage dishes, pretzel with spreads, fried potatoes, and spaetzel. Also I dropped some cash on the floor one night that I came for dinner, and they kept it aside for me! Great people.

  • Review 66 (2018-02-17 - Rating: 5)

Authentic Austrian food, with a cozy rustic decor in Manhattan Lower East Side. I had the Schnitzel and the Pickled Herring was amazing. All portions were generous and the price was fair. Our waitress was extremely helpful in explaining the menu. The restaurant has both a bar and table service.

  • Review 67 (2023-05-30 - Rating: 5)

Chef Erwin and his team are the best there is for proper, Austrian style sausages, schnitzel and beer. And you’ll want to have all three. So far Cafe Katja is only place in Manhattan with FestBeer and Stiegal’s on draft served in Stein’s and I’m here for it.Dankeschön

  • Review 68 (2024-05-17 - Rating: 5)

The only reason I gave this three stars for atmosphere is its very dark so we had to turn on the flashlights on our phone to read the menu its very loud so if you want to have like a private conversation this is not the place to do it

  • Review 69 (2022-08-04 - Rating: 5)

We had both breakfast and dinner at Cafe Katja, and both were great. The food was terrific - heirloom tomato salad was perfect. Ambiance was warm and relaxing, and the service was excellent. Look forward to coming back.

  • Review 70 (2021-02-07 - Rating: 5)

Some great Bavarian food and beer! Really beautiful atmosphere (as is the name) in a surprising setting. Definitely pass on the pretzel as its a small not so fluffy one as you might expect!

  • Review 71 (2024-10-06 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 80 (2017-06-27 - Rating: 5)

Im German and I was overwhelmed by their food! I was there with intl friends and we tasted a variety of things - even the Brezel was the German way! Further I asked for a specific German dish without pork which even was not on the menu (Käsespätzle) and they prepared it and it was extremely tasty! I can definitely recommend this place to everyone who wants to taste German/Austrian food! Who goes there for dinner should get the cold plate with the mixed sausages, this is authentic if you want to have a real German dinner, as we usually eat cold dishes in the evening ;)

  • Review 82 (2021-11-23 - Rating: 5)

We stopped in here at the beginning of our German food tour of NY on a Monday night. The staff was super friendly and let my girlfriend take a 30m work call before we even ordered anything. The vibe is incredible -- wood and brick with classic German music pulsing from the bar. We ordered a couple of beers (get the Spaten Oktoberfest if its available!) and a pretzel to start. The obadza was fantastic with the pretzel, which was hot and a perfect starter. Then we moved onto the main course with an Emmentaler Sausage and Jägerschnitzel. A lot of the German spots I hit, the Jäger is actually just wienerschnitzel (Austrian-style) with mushroom sauce on top. But because the owner at Katjas is very authentically Austrian, the Jäger is a fantastic unbreaded schnitzel with real mushrooms piled on top. And the sausage comes with actual Knödeln, which are a fantastic pairing. The portions are HUGE, so dont shy away from the prices. Overall, we were very impressed with the staff who frequently checked up to make sure we had everything we needed, the atmosphere which brought us back to our visits to small European holes-in-the-wall, and the food which was as authentically Austrian as it gets. Fantastic place to come if youre looking for a German/Austrian getaway!

  • Review 83 (2014-08-19 - Rating: 5)

TOP Location, took a walk through ChinaTown and Little Italy and stopped there for lunch. Very polite waitress and very good food. We liked it to get really austrian food after one week in the states. Prices are reasonable, a true Schnitzel has its price, but there are very more others you can choose of, so give it a try.

Griass Gott. I was there 7 years ago and had a nice chat with the Austrian owner (me being Swiss). The pancakes were fantastic!

  • Review 85 (2017-02-21 - Rating: 5)

Its absouletly amazing!! This post is long overdue. I had the meatballs which were sooo divine, the flavors were rich and the portions were huge. I had a side of sourkraut, i know i spelled it wrong, but u know what i am talking about. It was amazing also and paired well with my meatballs. For sure coming back!!! I am coming bak and bringin friends. The beers were also good, not a big beer drinker but i liked it.

Nice place located in downtown with good food and very good service. Also very convenient bar with a lot of beer and wine. I think this is one of few places where you can have white asparagus while its season is here. And Asparagus and wiener schnitzel makes a perfect pair. Wine and beer lis is good. Staff is very friendle and helpful. Nice to come here again.

I love this place. Perfect everyday Austrian fare at a very reasonable price, done in the most lovely, warm, homey and neighborhoody way. I kind of wish I could eat here every day. Theres hardly a thing I dont like on the menu. They really know what theyre doing with sausages (if there are 2 or more of you, do the sausage platter). Other delights: the pretzel, the landjaeger, the red cabbage salad (this could be a light meal), the salmon with a kölsch in summer. The ruben is so good -- hearty, but so good.

After a nearby event, we stopped by for an early dinner at Cafe Katja. I have been looking for the best German restaurants during Oktoberfest period this year. After some serious research, the best of the best German places in NYC, Cafe Katja kept on coming up as a great stellar and high-rated spot. When I think of great German food and beer, I do not think of the Lower East Side. The LES has an amazing breadth of restaurants with a more relaxed vibe compared to other Manhattan neighborhoods. For reference after eating at Cafe Katja, I would rank Cafe Katja in my top three for German food in NYC with Bier International in Harlem and Radegast in Williamsburg, Brooklyn all for me in the top three. With Oktoberfest from last week until early October, there are plenty of beer festival type of events but it is good to have great food and great drinks. Any excuse to have some to have some large beer and weiner shnitzel is worth it.To start, we had to enjoy a half liter hefe-weiss from Paulander ($8). It has a classic wheat, round body, crisp and refreshing. It was silky smooth, light but flavorful. We paired the beer with a pretzel with spread ($4.50). The spread was with real butter. The butter was so rich. For our meal, we went with the assorted sausages for two. This is $20 each so it is a little pricey but it is plenty filling. We ended up taking some home. For service and overall experience, our waitress, Kailee (not sure of the spelling of her name), was very helpful, knowledgeable and cheerful. The tables are very close but its a restaurant in lower Manhattan. Every place in this area is tight. Finally, next year Cafe Katja will be around for ten years and I look forward to coming back for brunch. Thank you making great real deal German food in NYC.

This LES Austrian joint prepares authentic fare of whursts, schnitzels, and other bites, served by a German-speaking staff. The portions are very filling and put you into a daze as the food coma sets in. The restaurant has a homey feel, and if its your birthday, they will ring a bell and the whole place starts singing for you.

  • Review 91 (2022-12-28 - Rating: 5)

Amazing! The elderflower margarita, hickory smoked salmon, and trout amandine are to die for.Beautiful and cozy atmosphere with excellent service, I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!

  • Review 92 (2021-10-04 - Rating: 5)

A place where you can order in German. And get good sausage.

  • Review 93 (2021-07-09 - Rating: 5)

A true staple of the neighborhood and quite possibly one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. Been here a hundred times and will go another hundred! Make sure to go for a liter at least once, and don’t forget to try some schnapps.

  • Review 94 (2024-08-25 - Rating: 4)

Austrian bietgarten atmosphere with great outdoor seating in the summer. Good selection of beers and traditional Austrian dishes (schnitzel, spatzen), and a few others that surprised (trout almondine). Appetizers were mostly forgettable. Service only OK

  • Review 95 (2018-10-05 - Rating: 5)

Delicious, simple, Austrian food. Fantastic wine selection, surprisingly great salads for a place specializing in meat, friendly service and homey atmosphere.

  • Review 96 (2023-08-27 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic Austrian restaurant in the LES. Definitely worth a visit. In the spring make sure to try the spargel.

  • Review 97 (2022-01-07 - Rating: 5)

Love Cafe Katja, it’s one of my favourite restaurants in New York! I would recommend the pretzel, liverwurst, Austrian meatballs and fried chicken thighs, also the cocktails and wine…. ;)

Best German restaurant in Manhattan 👏

  • Review 99 (2022-05-14 - Rating: 4)

Weiner schnitzel was awesome. Almost spring spaetzle was VERY heavy on the veggies and light on cheese, but tasty. Pretzel was fine but honestly did not deserve the rave reviews it gets on here.

Good pretty high end Austrian food. Was impressed. Although a bit pricey considering its pretty standard comfort food. Goulash should be food for the people

  • Review 104 (2015-06-14 - Rating: 5)

I had drinks with a friend and our server Miri was outstanding.

  • Review 107 (2014-04-14 - Rating: 4)

Austrian food is something of a rarity in Manhattan. Good Austrian food is even scarcer still. But one spoonful of the goulash at Cafe Katja will prove its existence outside the walls of Wallsé. Be forewarned, however; between the immense portions, heaviness of the fare, and dark beers, this is not a restaurant for the faint of heart.

  • Review 108 (2020-09-11 - Rating: 5)

Austrian cuisine. The food is very good but the service is great. They have a special menu to celebrate Oktoberfest which is really good. Portions are Germanic (huge) and is reasonable priced. The Mexican guy waiting on us was superb and very helpful.

Tasty Austrian/German food, awesome and friendly staff, and atmosphere.Recommendations:- Austrian Meatballs $25~- Reuben $25~Reuben was well toasted, cheesey, and meaty, served with ranch. The meatballs were excellent for meatball/meatloaf lovers, root veggies were cooked tender and sweet. Looking forward to coming back and trying out the other dishes. We sat at the bar and chatted with some of the staff, and it was clear the staff were enjoying their work and creating a neighborhood spot.

  • Review 158 (2017-01-17 - Rating: 4)

Cafe Katja is the place to go for Austrian food in the city. Ok, it may be one of not many, but even with the small sample size, it’s definitely the best. The ambiance is very cozy especially on a cold winter day with lots of wood, exactly what you’d expect from a Germanic type of eatery. The beer selection is great with several Austrian and German varieties including ones harder to find in the US like the Hofbrau Dunkel. The food is excellent and stays true to its Austrian inspiration. Expect many big meat plates. The schnitzel is not only huge, but perfectly prepared and delicious. The beef goulash was my favorite with a hearty sauce over spaetzle noodles and large chunks of beef. Don’t forget to add a strudel at the end to finish off the experience. Service is also top notch and very friendly and attentive. This should be your winter weather getaway.

Cafe Katja is a charming little Austrian eatery located in the Lower East Side of New York City, and I recently had the pleasure of dining there. From the moment I stepped inside, I was impressed by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor is rustic and cozy, with wood paneling and antique accents throughout the space. One of the highlights of my dining experience at Cafe Katja was the exceptional service provided by the staff, particularly Erwin, Angel, and Fernando. These three individuals went above and beyond to ensure that my dining experience was enjoyable and memorable.Erwin, in particular, was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and was able to provide helpful recommendations. I decided to try the Wiener Schnitzel, which is one of the restaurants signature dishes, and it did not disappoint. The schnitzel was crispy and perfectly cooked, and it was accompanied by a delicious potato salad.Angel was also a delight to interact with. He was attentive to my needs throughout the meal and was always happy to provide extra condiments or drink refills. And Fernando, that nights bartender, was a master of his craft. He created a delicious cocktail for me that perfectly complemented my meal.Overall, I would highly recommend Cafe Katja to anyone looking for a cozy and delicious dining experience in New York City. The exceptional service provided by Erwin, Angel, and Fernando only added to the overall enjoyment of my visit, and I look forward to returning to this lovely restaurant in the future.
