Chef Yu is a fantastic spot for Chinese food in NYC! The hot and sour soup was absolutely delicious, with just the right balance of flavors.I also appreciated that the cocktails were reasonably priced, which is a nice bonus in the city. But the real star here is the food—it was very good, exceeding my expectations in every way.I’m already looking forward to returning the next time I’m in the city. If you’re craving quality Chinese food, Chef Yu is a must-visit! -

Stopped in and had an amazing lunch here with some friends. It wasn’t too busy, very nice environment, everyone is very friendly, staff is quick and can be a bit pushy but to as bad as some places I have been to. The Brunch drinks are worth it and the food wow, it was amazing. Overall I would say please stop by and enjoy. This place has been here through a lot and before the pandemic it was very hard to even get in the door. When you come you will understand why. -

Fastest service! Fresh food (shrimp lo mein, crispy delight, sesame chicken) that tasted yummy. Serving sizes were very generous. -
Review 4 (2024-12-23 - Rating: 4)
Atmosphere is good. Food is relative regarding its price level. The waiter is nice. -
Review 5 (2024-04-26 - Rating: 4)
The staff here are very kind. Unfortunately didn’t enjoy the food very much. If I remember correctly, we got the Szechuan style shredded beef. This is listed as spicy, it definitely was not. The portion size was enough for two people to share. We also got the spring rolls which were meh. If you have a larger group this place could definitely accommodate you. I think the prices are also pretty decent compared to other places in the area. -
Review 6 (2024-08-19 - Rating: 4)
Went here for dinner with some family members. The variety of food here is staggering even for a Chinese restaurant. Out of all the entrees, the shrimp lo mein stood out the most while everything else was alright. Service was excellent during our time here and the atmosphere was also good as well. -

We are so happy to have found this Chinese restaurant! Clean, spacious, fine dining place (with quite reasonable price) with white table cloth. The food came out so fast and we were so impressed with the quality and taste. I am Asian and have tasted plenty of Chinese food, so I’m quite particular when it comes to Chinese restaurants. The waiter was friendly and attentive. Such a pleasant experience overall. -

I met my big homie here as he said their lunch special was a quick meal and a potential inflation buster. Nothing gets me out of bed like a potential inflation buster...Chef Yu is like a Chinese version of Buca Di Beppo. A big space with ample room and huge portion sizes at decent prices, but just straight Americanized... they dont even give you chopsticks ahahahaa. But Buca Di Beppo does have its time and place lowkey...they dont wanna have that conversation though. The menu was huge, but I went straight to the lunch specials as you know why Im here. I got the spicy diced chicken, and I swear to god it came in under 5 minutes from the time the words spicy diced chicken please left my carmex filled lips.It came a little too quick (haha) as now I am fully aware that they have a big pot of that chicken on simmer in the back and just go and scoop it out, or they just throw it in the microwave and bring it right out to you. They should have just waited 10 min and I wouldnt have batted an eye. However at $11.95 and a portion big enough for 2, this EASILY qualifies as an inflation buster. The mix of chicken, white rice, and vegetables was honestly pretty damn good I cant even lie. It didnt have me feeling like I was going to die after like some americanized Chinese food does.I ate the whole thing because the chicken did SLAP, and when you from where Im from you dont leave food on the plate. Im also just an animal and built different so please dont beat yourself up if you cant finish it...Another reviewer said the food is like an upscale Panda Express, and I couldnt agree more. Nice comparison Emily C, keep doing you we see you workin!Call it in. Tell the good people. Inflation is in TROUBLE. Chef Yus lunch special is on its head!!!!!IG @jnov_Tiktok @jnov__ -

Beautiful place to have lunch or dinner. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was delicious. This was the best General Tso Chicken I’ve ever had in my life! They manage to keep it lightly crisp under all that sauce and the meat inside is so juicy. I swear it’s perfection! -

We were visiting NY for Comic Con and were very hungry and found this place as we were walking back to the Subway. It wasnt busy and the service was fast. By the time we entered, sat, down, and got our food, and cocktails only took 12 minutes. Which was awesome cause we were hungry from exploring the city. The prices here are very affordable, and the serving size is decent. You can probably feed 2 people with each dish. They have a special cocktail menu. In the photo is the Killer Kool-Aid, which was ok, and I had chicken Chow Mein. I also tried their pork, and fried rice was amazing. The staff was very friendly. And the atmosphere was fine dining but without the high prices. It was high-end, classy, and most important, uper clean and tidy!!If yourearound the area. I highly recommend it here. -

Our first time to NYC and decided to try this Chinese Restaurant. It appeared to be a very nice location. Clean, spacious and reasonably priced. We ordered a soup and an egg roll. My wife ordered the cashew chicken. These were good, not excellent, but good.I ordered the shrimp in lobster sauce. Sounds good, right? Nope, there was no flavor to this dish. It was the first shrimp dish that I didnt care for.Service was ok, even though it wasnt very busy. Not my favorite Chinese place. -
Review 12 (2023-04-12 - Rating: 5)
Service was absolutely amazing. Food came out immediately. Prawn appetizer was delicious. Beef Chow Fun was good not great and beef and broccoli was great. The white rice that it came with seemed sticky, absolutely tasty. The best part was the check, which was a fair amount for my spouse and I.Although, the kitchen was literally about to close, the servers were not rude or rushing at all. In my opinion that added to the great experience. My -

Review 14 (2024-03-27 - Rating: 5)
Was in NYC for the weekend, did a quick google search for Chinese food near my hotel…found Chef Yu. The older gentleman that took our order was very polite, food was ready in 10 minutes. The ambiance was beautiful, modern, sophisticated and not crowded. Seated as soon as my husband and I walked in. Food was fantastic, the best beef and broccoli I’ve had in a long time. We will definitely be back next time we are in NYC. -
Review 15 (2022-11-02 - Rating: 4)
Ate here in May 2022. Nice ambience. Feels like a fine western fine dining restaurant. Service is ok.Serves Chinese food cooked to suite the Western taste buds. So if you are not into pure Chinese cuisines, this may appeal to you. -

Chef Yus restaurant in Manhattan is truly a gem. The location is incredibly convenient and the lobster is fresh and delicious. Each bite bursts with flavor and the care that goes into each dish is evident. I highly recommend this restaurant for a special night out or a memorable meal with friends and family. 5 stars all around! -
Review 18 (2023-02-12 - Rating: 5)
Great atmosphere for dining. Delicious and authentic Chinese food in the middle of Manhattan. Will definitely make a trip back here when I visit New York city again in the future. -
Review 19 (2024-09-01 - Rating: 4)
The presentation for the dishes are not great, but they are yummy and fresh with ingredients from China town daily. It serve house tea, the prices are very reasonable. the restroom is clean and fresh which is a big plus for Chinese restaurant. -
Review 20 (2022-09-19 - Rating: 5)
This was our late dinner when we arrived at New York. To be honest we didn’t expect to have a tasty noodle soup. We ordered Lu mian (braised noodles) and braised beef noodles that were amazing. A bowl full of the ingredients and the soup is very good. -
Review 21 (2018-07-30 - Rating: 5)
Extra fancy Chinese restaurant! I came in Sunday afternoon and it was close to empty. They have a lot of seating, made me think on a busy evening it is packed. The food was filling and good. I loved that it came out hot, right off the stove. The happy hour was exciting. 5 dollars drinks, even if house liquor pretty tastey. -
Review 22 (2018-04-24 - Rating: 5)
Went to Chef Yu for the proximity to my hotel...WOW...delicious! Cozy atmosphere as well. The wait staff were friendly and the food came out in a timely manner. The Hot and Sour soup delivered on spice. The shrimp Szechuan dumplings sauce was phenomenal! The scallops and mixed vegetables were also delicious. Reasonable prices for NYC as well! Enjoy! -
Review 23 (2024-07-10 - Rating: 4)
Very neat clean and quiet place. Was able to get good flavorful Asian food closest to the style we find in India. Pan fried noodles and lo mein were excellent. Wouldve loved more veggies in the dishes. They also have a lunch menu that comes with rice, it would be nice to have an option of noodles too for those that dont eat rice. Me and my daughter visit this place often and look forward to try more dishes. Our main problem is that we dont eat lamb, beef, pork, rice. Highly recommend this place anyway. -
Review 24 (2023-12-11 - Rating: 5)
This place is so pretty and the service is wonderful. Its my favorite place to get Chinese food with my boyfriend in the city. The lunch menu is much more affordable than their regular pricing, so I would recommend going earlier in the day to save some money. -
Review 25 (2022-12-14 - Rating: 4)
Nice atmosphere. I had Wonton soup. Cant go wrong with that. Then Chicken and String beans. The chicken was thin and tender. I thought the strung beans could have had more flavor. They have good lunch specials so the price was right. -
Review 26 (2024-10-01 - Rating: 4)
Great service and comfortable environment. -
Review 27 (2024-06-17 - Rating: 5)
First this restaurant feels a little hesitating .Its a white table cloth setting and located midtown Manhattan with a very professional table service available. You might think its out of your budget put here is the big surprise. The average price of a dinner plate is in the low $20 range. Very upscaled food presentation. All my food choices were delicious and satisfying. Happy hour drinks are as low as $4 for a bottle beer. I recommend Chef Yo. -
Review 28 (2022-12-18 - Rating: 5)
This place is a home run, great food and prices were great especially considering its NYC. Very nice place to add so grab some dinner and a drink and relax with friends and family. -

Review 32 (2024-07-18 - Rating: 4)
A good Chinese restaurant in a location that is somewhat lacking in good restaurants right by Penn station. The food is above average Chinese with some good traditional and non traditional (for western tastes) choices. They have a good happy hour for cheaper drinks. Id say its worth a visit. -
Review 33 (2019-10-17 - Rating: 5)

Have been here about 5 or 6 times and have never had a bad experience. The food is amazing fresh and comes out quick. Love going during happy hour having some drinks and food and the portions are nice size. I recommend trying the house fried rice. -
Review 35 (2023-05-14 - Rating: 5)

Review 39 (2022-08-04 - Rating: 5)
I got the spicy beef noodle soup as well as the sezchuan wonton, both were hot and flavorful, the broth had a deep beef flavor and nice thick udon style noodles, I think the sezchuan wonton had more of a peanut style sauce than spicy sauce but it was still enjoyable, definatly check it out if your in the area, the 2 dishes cost me about 21$ or so -
Review 40 (2023-09-12 - Rating: 5)
I was in town on a business trip and ducked in here for a dinner for 1. It was one of the most amazing meals Ive ever had in my life. The drink I ordered was VERY strong, which I wasnt mad about. I ordered fried pork dumplings (my all-time favorite) and sesame chicken. The dumplings were amazing, I am already thinking of returning for more. The sesame chicken was delicious. The breading was still nice and crispy even under all the sweet and spicy sauce. It was all very affordable, too! Drink, appetizer, meal, and tip totaled $45. I will be daydreaming about this meal for years to come. -
Review 41 (2023-09-03 - Rating: 5)
A surprisingly spacious restaurant in Manhattan. The menu is large, with plenty of vegetarian choices. Try the vegetarian or pork dumplings in soy and peanut sauce. The whole fried fish was delicious. The fried rice is good to share aroubd the table. Service was attentive, and the food comes out pretty fast. Prices, given Manhattan, were closer to reasonable for such a nice place. -
Review 42 (2023-02-12 - Rating: 4)
This restaurant has a nice modern look and the food was delicious. -
Review 43 (2023-10-23 - Rating: 5)
Very good and affordable. The quality and quantity of food was generous. The pates average $15 to $20 with some a bit more and some a bit less.I had braised beef with cabbage and roasted peppers and hot and sour soup. The beef was tender and well spiced. The waiter was concerned it might be too hot but it was just a bit below my tolerance. I think I can stand medium heat.My only suggestion is to get some vegetables or with two people, get one meat dish and one vegetable dish and split. The decor is very modern and clean. What a treat. -
Review 44 (2024-12-03 - Rating: 5)

Review 46 (2023-12-26 - Rating: 5)
My family and I have been going to Chef Yu for years. Food and atmosphere always great. FYI they will hover over you till you tip them which I find very tasteless in my opinion. We ordered shrimp fried rice with Chinese broccoli, and BBQ spared ribs. It never fails. -
Review 47 (2021-06-05 - Rating: 5)

Tasty. Best sesame chicken and orange chicken we’ve ever had. Great restaurant. Very clean. Good prices.Fantastic service. Food served very hot and fast.My only two gripes? No combo plates, and Peking duck takes 30 minutes. (I was too tired to wait) I highly recommend Chef Yu. -
Review 60 (2023-08-27 - Rating: 4)
Great restaurant with super quick service, could have taken at most 5-10 minutes. The staff were also super helpful and helped us with our every request, always returning to check on us and refilling our water. Me and my friend ordered pineapple fried rice, which tasted great, and schezwan chicken, which didnt taste like schezwan at all and tasted pretty subpar. All in all, the food was alright, but a great restaurant overall. -
Review 61 (2022-11-20 - Rating: 5)
Good Chinese food. Service was good and a nice restaurant. This is like a better version of your local fast food Chinese restaurant. Cleaner and a bit tastier. -
Review 62 (2024-06-25 - Rating: 5)
The spicy beef stew noodle is delicious and soooo cheap! It is only $11.99 with a lot of beef! And in midtown. Who would thought, and it is not busy at all during lunch time so fast service as well!I personally think this noodle tastes better than xi’an famous food, slurp kitchen and all other restaurants. The beef is savory and the spiciness is just about right! It is my favourite place now 😭 and great services as wellChinese restaurant don’t like to check on you as they prefer to leave you alone 😂 don’t interpret that as bad service hahah -
Review 63 (2023-04-28 - Rating: 5)
This place has amazing food for a great (my midtown Manhattan standards) price. I highly recommend the pineapple curry fried rice, I get this like once a week. The ambience is really nice and theres cute napkin art on each table! -

Extremely fast service. The food is consistently good and made fresh. All dishes are moderately priced but the seating is top notch. Its always clean. It gets packed during lunch which is testimony to their quality. Highly recommend if you are close to Penn Station Lunch specials are just $12. -
Review 73 (2018-11-07 - Rating: 4)
Pleasantly surprised by this restaurant which sounds like a non-authentic Chinese place. The dishes were very well done. My wife and I have been here several times after the initial visit, and sampled a variety of dishes. The overall quality is pretty good. The location is very convenient for us since we usually take trains from Penn station. -

Clean, elegant restaurant. Food, price,...just on d right level. Im just commending d place for cleanliness, elegance, just been here once but food, need to be back to check out IF there is an outstanding taste in their food. So far, their expensive seafood dish I ordered, NO wow factor, just a common taste from other small Chinese restaurant comparison. But I can suggest this restaurant for outstanding cleanliness and elegance, again! Nice place. -

Some of the best Chinese I have had in a while! Prices were reasonable for being in NYC. Good serving size. Ordered two entrees, fried rice, and pot stickers for four and got stuffed. -
Review 91 (2021-03-09 - Rating: 4)
I had a fairly mediocre experience. Szechuan Chicken wasnt exactly spicy by any standard. The white rice was bland and listless, with no aroma.I had to ask for a knife, and the chicken pieces were definitely large enough to require one.On the upside, hot and sour soup is quite good and the egg rolls though tiny, are excellent. -
Review 92 (2023-04-20 - Rating: 5)
We came in for a quick bite 30 minutes before closing expecting to be rushed and prodded to finish quickly, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Staff was helpful, courteous, and friendly, and the food was amazing. We were very impressed and will be back next time we are in NYC -

This is my go to spot for work lunches when the group wants Chinese. Its a very professional environment with your regularly 9 dollar lunch specials. The staff is SUPER fast during lunch time. Theyll get you seated, hand you a menu, and get your food out to you in less than 5 minutes, no lie. Theyre not rude about it either. They dont rush you. Highly recommend. -
Review 96 (2019-06-30 - Rating: 5)
Fabulous meal! Dumplings were very good. Chicken and string beans were incredible. Fairly priced for midtown especially with cloth tablecloths and napkins and that level of service. highly recommend! Pork noodle soup was a big hit and the crispy noodles with nshrimp was reminiscent of food we had in Indonesia. Very aromatic noodles. Tasty! -

Look in the window and it looks formal and expensive, but these are very acceptable New York prices! The flavors are rich and authentic. My favorite must-have for every visitor is the Szechuan Dumpling in Red Hot Oil (#208). The pork or shrimp dumplings are in a marvelous peanut sauce with a lightly spicy hot oil poured over. They are divine. (When I play Broadway auditions across the street, I’m often tempted in here for a dumpling snack afterward!)Tonight I had the Spicy Stewed Beef Noodle (A6), and it is so warm and comforting with a signature aroma/flavor of China. -

Everting was soo good. Do yourself a favor and stop on in and try the General Tso chicken and the killer Koolaid drink. FYI it’s all liquor and very little koolaid. Also they have some steamed dumplings in a spicy sauce that are amazing. -

Excellent food, inexpensive, slow service... the first two trump the latter. Chef Yu has regulars. Us regulars get the staffs New York Attitude. Yes, we are used to the slow service, but it leaves for more time for conversation and drinks with friends. Also, we know what we want as soon as we walk through the door. Additionally, we order our drinks in pairs. I know this seems crazy, but we always have an entertaining time in Chef Yu watching newbies get flustered at the slow service. For those of you who wrote bad reviews... think about it, why do you think theyve been in business this long? Why did the Soup Nazi have long lines? If you are willing to have a little bit of patience... you will enjoy your experience. -

Food was actually pretty good here. From the decore and the menu it obviously is geared toward the more Western customer. But the flavors were great and presentation was wonderful. Would have rated this place higher but the service was painfully slow. -

Food was great, however on a slow Sunday evening, (there were 2 or 3 tables), the server was rushing us to order and clearly frustrated because we did not order the lobster special -

Chef Yu, a pleasant place to have a quick meal at an affordable price. The food is quite delicious and prepared and served fast, but its not a Chinese fast food restaurant. Once in a while Ill sit for lunch, but usually Ill order take out, and within 10 minutes or less, youre food is ready. Today I ordered a lunch special with shrimp and hot peppers, served with vegetable fried rice and a salad. Yummy! Ill be back soon! -

My friends and I come here every year during New York Comic Con, and this year was no different. Great food at decent prices - and a $5 happy hour from 4-9pm doesnt hurt either! Theyre able to cater to all dietary restrictions (I would know, since we have both a vegan and someone who cant eat gluten in our group). Well be back! -

Food was delivered to our hotel within 30 minutes. It was very good. If youre a big eater order more; portions werent too small, but we definitely didnt have leftovers. -

Omg.....$5 drinks at happy hour!!! Although they were drinks popular in the 80s and 90s but so whaaat!! Theyre drinks!!!! The wait staff is courteous and leaves you alone. The food is delicious and taste very fresh. The overall ambience of the restaurant is elegant but laid back. You get alot for your money. -

Food is very good & very affordable. Never have to wait for a table. Service is always a little slow to start out - we seem to wait longer for the drinks than we do for the food. Bathroom is very small & dark. This is my go-to place whenever Im in the city. -

By far and without exception the best chinese food for dozens of blocks or avenues. .Their lunch specials are perfectly priced and very fair on all accounts. Price, selection, quality, serving size and taste.Every single person I’ve suggested to either order in or sit down in their dining room has thanked me.There is no where else that I can think of that actually can serve you a meal and get you in and out in 20 minutes if you need at a table service restaurant. They’d get a extremely hard to earn 5⭐️ but sometimes , but not very often ,,,, they meaning = the servers can be a bit cold shouldered ie ( rude ). But if I had to serve 400 people at lunch perhaps I would be too.Don’t let that stop you, GO!! -

A quarter roast duck with white rice for lunch, $11 from the Cantonese BBQ section of the menu. Spot on for flavor. Just a bit boney as duck can sometimes be. Will order from here again. -

Decent Sichuan style restaurant near Penn Station! My wife loves their Chinese Cabbage With Dry Shrimp dish, not spicy but very flavorful. I’m from Sichuan so I enjoy more spicy dishes. Water Boiled Beef is not bad, Pork Belly With Hot Green Pepper is also nice. I’m still sampling one or two new dishes every visit, looking forward to pleasantly surprises. -

Chef Yu is a good lunch spot in the area. The lunch special is huge and comes with two spring rolls, small salad and the main entree. It is popular among office workers in the area. I really enjoy the Sechuan dishes here because they would use real spice. The space is also big and pretty clean. You will feel comfortable chatting away. -

Had the chicken with string beans lunch special with vegetable fried rice. Added some red pepper oil. It had a nice flavor and the bill was 11 dollars. Cant beat that for a sit down restaurant in midtown Manhattan. -

So, I only had a piece of their menu, but I have always said, if you want to find out how good something is, try the most plain and simple item: i.e., ice cream? Go for the vanilla! If they can nail the vanilla - go for the rest!!! Well, Chef Yu has the most indulgent, delicious, moist, tender, tasty steamed pork dumplings I have ever tasted!!!! And their spring rolls are like eating angels wings! So light and delicious! Please, keep these lovely people in business! -

Some of the best Chinese food in New York City. Personally it is my favorite. Try the chicken with capsicum and the dumplings, both are to die for. This place also has one of the best happy hours in the area with lots of cocktails to choose from. -

Update 3/15/22 we are the only ones here at 16:28 and Maps shows busier than usual lol.A7 - chicken noodle soup, basic soup, no spice. Get this if you just want plain soup. Its good.11/20/21Back for a work lunch, 4 of us.1evs+3eic.I had the hot & sour soup- good. And the House Special Lo Mein- really good.Service is still slow. It was just about an hour to get our order taken and the food to come out. We asked for our checks when the food came out.Made it back to work on time.Early 2019 draft: The food is fine, the service is slow.... I could care less how many people wait on me but Ive been there many times during the 4p-6p window, its never busy and somehow the wait staff still seem to be distant. Ive even made light conversation with them to help the cause over time, I did get a water and tea refill yesterday relatively quick though...maybe its working??I wouldnt call it a beautiful place, its big, airy and relatively clean. Happy hour drinks are a good price for NYC ($6-$7). The big Noodle Soups are good as are the shrimp dumplings and cold sesame noodles.Nothing to write home about though - (unless its your last meal in nyc)I gave it four stars because I like it, its relatively cheap, theres always an open table and Ill be back a few more times. -
Review 132 (2016-07-24 - Rating: 4)
Admittedly not totally authentic Chinese, a lot of dishes are what I would call Westernised Chinese, but decent food portion for a good price given its midtown location. Have been a few times and never had issue with the food. Place is huge inside and not always the busy so can maybe lack a bit of atmosphere sometimes. -

Review 134 (2023-02-07 - Rating: 5)
I did take out service was fast. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I didnt get any fortune cookies. I only have pictures of the steamed dumplings which were great and sliced beef with bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms. I had bbq roast duck, chicken fried rice, egg roll and wonton soup, which only had three small wontons and a tone of broth other then that the food was good. I recommend to try this restaurant food. -

Szechuan Shrimp Wontons is a must get on every visit. This restaurant has great service and some of the best Chinese cuisine, especially if you like spicy food. The spice level seems to have gone down some so maybe they nerfed it some. -

I have been many times, always for lunch. The food is great and the prices are very reasonable; but as many other reviewers have noted, service is slow and inattentive. But the first two positive factors definitely make it worthwhile. -
Review 141 (2013-08-03 - Rating: 4)
I have ordered many dishes on many occasions from Chef Yu, not simply because theyre close to my office, but because their food rocks and the delivery speed is lickety split. Its mostly all 4-star good and theres often a line to wait for a table, usually a good sign. My favorite dish is the half a roast duck. Im not a big fan of the way they prepare the BBQ spare ribs but theyre still 3 star (I like them fatty and dripping in sauce, they serve ribs lean). Bon Apetit, i personally recommend Chef Yu and would like to thank their excellent staff and cooks. -
