I visited Fraunces Tavern for lunch and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The ambience was incredible, full of historical charm, and the staff was attentive and friendly. We ordered the chicken pot and fish and chips, and both dishes were exceptional. The chicken pot was rich and flavorful, a definite highlight of the meal. The fish and chips were perfectly crispy and fresh. Overall, the combination of amazing food, friendly service, and the historic atmosphere makes this place a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Fraunces Tavern is my go to NYC restaurant! It’s downtown near Wall Street and the World Trade Center, and has a ton of historical significance! It’s one of the oldest establishments in the country, and is famous because George Washington gave his farewell speech to his officers there! The food is great, fancy pub fair! All the different rooms with different themes adds a unique flair to the place. Everything from atmosphere to service to food is amazing here! You have to eat lunch or dinner at Fraunces Tavern if you are in Downtown Manhattan!

  • Review 3 (2024-10-27 - Rating: 5)

Ive wanted to dine at Fraunces Tavern for a very long time, and today was finally the day. This place oozes history as its one of the oldest restaurants in New York City. The establishment is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city, which was constructed in 1719 well before we were even the United States of America!Frances Tavern also has a museum located on the second floor that you can tour, which I did after lunch and was a lot of fun. In any event, this whole experience is a must visit NYC attraction. Oh, and I loved the duck sandwich!

  • Review 4 (2024-12-29 - Rating: 5)

Finally went - what an amazing place, great tavern food - lobster Mac, giant pretzel, even a deal w/ 3 oysters and a stout beer 🍻 the perfect place for tourists & even a staycation, museum tour & dinner night! Next stop is the porterhouse for oyster happy hour 👍

  • Review 5 (2024-12-30 - Rating: 5)

It is historic, it is heavily touristed, but it is a New York institution for good reason: great food, great selection of beers, good cocktails, excellent atmosphere, fun, lively crowd, with lots of locals too—like us!

  • Review 6 (2024-12-05 - Rating: 5)

Was staying in the Financial District, Google showed Fraunces Tavern close by. Stopped in for a beer, went to the back room, great atmosphere. Got a beer and a mead, which was surprisingly good, lambic vibes with just right cherry sweetness and flavor. Split a fish and chips, wow was it good!

  • Review 7 (2024-12-27 - Rating: 5)

Stopped in for lunch. Food was great - went with the pot pie that was highly recommended. Delicious.Lots of seating, and many various rooms with ornate styling and history everywhere.Would definitely recommend for the great food, and history.

I visited Fraunces Tavern because of its historical importance to American history.I didnt tour the museum but did have a few pints at the bar. It gets very busy, so be patient when waiting to get served. The place has a good atmosphere .

  • Review 9 (2024-11-02 - Rating: 4)

Very cool, old, historic place, nice vibes in tavern, live jazz music at Saturday lunch. Many rooms, excellent service.Only negative was that the museum part was not free but cost $10 to visit.

  • Review 10 (2024-09-30 - Rating: 5)

We stopped to get a night cap and were pleasantly surprised with this bar. A very cozy, brown bar atmosphere with a good selection of drafts and liquer. The bartenders were quick, friendly, and willing to give out samples.

  • Review 11 (2024-07-25 - Rating: 5)

Historic building with a warm and comforting atmosphere. Started with cocktails at their Whiskey Bar served by a very knowledgeable and friendly bartender, shoutout to Oscar.Moved to the main Dining Room for a very fresh and delicious Chicken Pot Pie. Food was good and reasonably priced. Service was friendly. Great place for a family meal after a day of touristing... Take a short stroll to Battery Park afterwards.

WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WE WALKED INTO!! We were going to grab a beer and decided, on a whim, to grab dinner.WOW!! The food - absolutely spectacular. The atmosphere - in the piano bar - perfect!!We are not history buffs but now, knowing what we know, we feel honored to have bern in such a historical place on our once inna lifetime trip to NYC!

  • Review 13 (2024-12-24 - Rating: 5)

Very cool atmosphere, the seasonal drinks were so delicious. (Spiked Hot apple cider, mulled wine) great beer selection, the chicken pot pie was savory, and flavorful. Perfect for a warm day. We got right in with no reservation at 2-2:30 on a Monday. Perfect stop to warm up and enjoy a part of US history! Cool stop, highly recommend

Visited the pub and museum (upstairs) for July 4.Historic tavern and oldest operating pub (and oldest continuously standing building) in NYC. For a while, it housed the predecessors of the State, Treasury, and Defense Departments. Had the house ale which was $9 plus tax. Didnt eat anything there as there was no table seating available (it was crowded on July 4).Experience a piece of history!

  • Review 15 (2025-01-03 - Rating: 5)

This was on my visit list for while we were in New York given the history.Food was fantastic, we shared a scoth egg starter and I had lobster mac and cheese main. Large portion with plenty of lobster in it.Service was great, and they found us a table even though very busy. There is a museum upstairs which is well worth a visit and the entry fee.Only downside was the Manhattan cocktail which was ridiculously strong so not at all enjoyable. The warm cider however was beautiful and I needed to try and work out how it was made.

  • Review 16 (2024-11-05 - Rating: 5)

The independence bar inside is where it is at. Good beer, great food, and amazing service! This is a must-stop. AlsoPOSSIBLY HAUNTED!

  • Review 17 (2024-12-26 - Rating: 4)

Reasonably friendly and accommodating staff. Good food and plenty of choices. Decent wine and beer choices too. Extremely noisy inside, so difficult to have a meaningful conversation. Very large interior with lots of different bars and dining rooms.

  • Review 18 (2024-12-21 - Rating: 5)

Really cool spot in the financial district. Been around since 1762 and they have done a fantastic job preserving & fostering that upscale tavern vibe.Tons of seating and 3 distinct bars to choose from, this is a fantastic place to stop, grab a drink, and vibe!Would highly recommend the Presidential Punch, Manhattan, and espresso martini. The fall drinks were okay, but their flagships are outstanding.Food wise, KILLER. Lobster Mac and Cheese is enough to feed 2 for dinner or 3-4 for an appetizer. Fantastic spot, super cool, stop in and enjoy!

Visiting this historic inn was truly an unforgettable experience. The building itself is a stunning piece of history, awe-inspiring in its beauty. The staff is both friendly and highly knowledgeable, adding to the overall charm. There’s plenty to explore on the site, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts like myself, as well as for families. The diverse menu caters to a wide range of food preferences, which is a wonderful touch. Bravo to this historic inn for offering such a remarkable experience – it’s definitely a must-see!

  • Review 20 (2025-01-01 - Rating: 5)

The Chicken Pot Pie is amazing. Great service and it’s cool being in this location. Definitely get the truffle fries too!

  • Review 21 (2024-11-27 - Rating: 4)

I had a fine experience at this place. First and foremost, the building was incredible. It had an incredible atmosphere filled with historic charm. The service was alright, most likely because when I went it was packed. The tables, chairs, and things of that sort were all wooden. The bathroom wasn’t very clean though. I had the fish and chips, which was something I do not personally recommend because it tasted a little burnt. I hear the other items were pretty good though. I would give this place a 7.4/10.

  • Review 22 (2024-12-29 - Rating: 5)

Had a Xmas dinner here with friends and we loved the house stout & Irish coffee. Mac and cheese was the favourite dish of the table. The restaurant and bar was decorated nicely with a lot of cozy little nooks! We’ll be back for drinks very soon!

  • Review 23 (2024-10-14 - Rating: 5)

This little Tavern is one of the oldest buildings in New York. George Washington gave his farewell address to his officers at this Tavern after the Revolutionary War. The museum is very cool, and the little taverns food was amazing and affordable! Especially the Sticky Toffee Pudding!

  • Review 24 (2024-12-22 - Rating: 4)

Good food, unexpected good but expensive vine (cave: 20$ per glass)… but overworked and not authentic ingenuine personal.

  • Review 25 (2024-07-06 - Rating: 5)

I found out about this place from a couple that we met and told us about the oldest tavern in New York. I’d love the history and how they preserved the location. The food was perfect and close to the subway. Glad that we visited.

  • Review 26 (2024-12-31 - Rating: 4)

Food I had was a little cold but tasted good otherwise. At first I wanted to give 5* anyways but then I saw thats a reoccurring complaint so its something they need to fix eventually. Location and vibe of the place is great though.Apple strudel was really nice.

  • Review 27 (2024-04-14 - Rating: 5)

We are history buffs, and so this tavern was a delight. To think we ate in the same rooms as George Washington himself! The food was delicious, and the atmosphere and service were awesome. There is also a museum upstairs that tells of the history of the tavern. I wasnt expecting much, but it was actually really well done - and much bigger than we expected! There are some really great artifacts up there.

  • Review 28 (2023-10-27 - Rating: 4)

Pretty historic place this Fraunces Tavern. Washington used to come here with his friends and commanders. We went there with our friends! It was a nice experience. The service was great and the food and drinks were amazing. The vibe was excellent. The restaurant gets very busy so we recommend booking early. If you want to hangout with close friends or want to impress someone you should consider this place. I would definitely visit this place again!

  • Review 29 (2025-01-05 - Rating: 5)

If we were residents of New York, this would be a frequent hangout for me! Fraunces Tavern was already on our list after hearing about it on the Bowery Boys podcast, but it far exceeded our expectations. The interior is surprisingly spacious, featuring distinctive rooms illuminated by candlelight. It’s stunningly atmospheric, giving you the sense of being transported to another era.

  • Review 30 (2024-08-13 - Rating: 4)

The service and atmosphere are fantastic! We had the last seating of the night and our waiter was attentive and friendly even though I know he had to be ready to go home. The interior is so classic and cozy. The food was generally just okay, although our fig and goat cheese appetizer was amazing. Entrees were fine (salmon and steak) but not worth the price. Overall I’d recommend for small bites and drinks.

  • Review 31 (2024-08-16 - Rating: 5)

We went to the upstairs piano bar and it was such a unique and romantic experience :) the drinks and entertainment were the stars of the show!

  • Review 32 (2023-05-11 - Rating: 5)

I had quite a lovely time here. I felt transported to another place in time the moment I stepped in the building. Lots of history: I love the old decor, vibe and ambiance. The hostess and waitress were really friendly. Food tasted very healthy and natural. It’s a pretty big place. Different vibes in different areas. I would like to come back and try other foods and sit in different areas.

  • Review 33 (2024-05-21 - Rating: 5)

One of the highlights of our trip. Getting to have a meal in this historic Tavern wad really neat. The food and service were excellent. I had the chicken pot pie and lobster mac and cheese.

  • Review 34 (2023-06-05 - Rating: 5)

We stumbled upon this place on accident. We had no idea of the significance of the restaurant. I am so glad we found it. We were looking for a quick place to get a bite to eat and a couple drinks and we were more than impressed with what we got. We were able to make a reservation about 15 minutes prior to arrival and were able to be seated right away when we got there. We were a group of five and all had drinks and food. The food was absolutely delicious. The beer was great. The service was good at the restaurant was clean. I highly recommend coming here. The mushroom flat bread was delicious as was the steak sandwich

  • Review 35 (2024-08-23 - Rating: 5)

This delightful historic building exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our visit started with cocktails at the Whiskey Bar, where Oscar, the skilled and personable bartender, provided excellent service. We then moved to the main Dining Room to savor a freshly prepared and delicious Chicken Pot Pie. The food was flavorful and reasonably priced, complemented by the friendly and attentive service. Its an ideal place for a family meal after a day of exploring. Dont miss a leisurely stroll to Battery Park afterward.

  • Review 36 (2023-12-13 - Rating: 5)

Really lovely food, and a very nice restaurant. The lack of welcome from the bar staff (I went there instead of the restaurant) was a disappointing first impression... But I found our way to the restaurant and had a very nice meal. Good quality food. Decor was really festive. Lots of choice so good for dietary restrictions

  • Review 37 (2024-11-17 - Rating: 5)

Was able to plan a fabulous surprise engagement party for my sons fiance in the private room upstairs. The staff was amazing at helping us coordinate the event, including a fabulous catering menu of delicious finger foods, plus wonderful bartenders who made our signature cocktails. They accepted our ballooon delivery for us, allowed other personal decorations, and assisted with a video set-up and a piano player; they also allowed us to bring in a special cake and some of the couples favorite home-made cookies and home-town candies. Additionally, they helped with ushering guests upstairs, as well as our newly engaged couple unsuspectingly to the private room for the perfect surprise!

  • Review 38 (2024-04-30 - Rating: 5)

Great place to visit if you want to have a drink or dinner in a historical environment. We had drinks in the Whiskey Bar, and dinner in the large main dining room toward the back. Whiskey bar was a nice cozy place to unwind. Dinner was amazing. We had the charcuterie board and the short rib porter beef pie, which was so flavorful.

  • Review 39 (2024-10-17 - Rating: 4)

Our group of 7 finished a 13 mile NYC walk ending at the Tavern. We had reservations. We shared two huge pretzels (very good) and then 6 good burgers (1 person had the pork chop but it was dry). Our server was newly relocated from England and was very friendly and got our order correctly! We walked into the different rooms .. very nice and fun. We missed the tour and will return.

  • Review 40 (2024-12-28 - Rating: 4)

Excellent drinks with highly attentive service by the gentleman at the Whiskey Bar. Fun dancing in one of the live music bars. Last time I was there was in the early 80s. Always a Financial District favorite.

  • Review 41 (2024-05-14 - Rating: 4)

The Berkshire pork chop was juicy and flavorful. Do it with the truffle mashed potatoes. The fire roasted tomato linguini was a hit. Add shrimp. I was also impressed at how flavorful the fish and chips were. The atmosphere is dark and broody. Have a drink where George Washington had his!

  • Review 42 (2024-10-11 - Rating: 5)

It was a superb experience! I highly suggest reserving in the piano bar upstairs. (I suck at names) The woman playing the piano and singing was superb, my server sang a couple songs, which was amazing, and the service was also absolutely amazing and perfectly timed. Was it my favorite food ever? No, but it was really, really good and definitely satisfying. I would go back and normally I never go back to the same place twice away from home.

  • Review 43 (2023-11-19 - Rating: 4)

One of the oldest buildings in the city. Oldest tavern/restaurant. Excellent food and juicy porkchop. Nice staff but not all. Reserve for a better experience. Theres a museum upstairs that you can visit.

The selection of beer here is gigantic, the booze it’s all over! The ambiance was just right…The service is good, the waitress was helpful and friendly. The food was good. I will come back here again to keep trying the beers they offer.Clean spot, come check it out!

Great portion and quality of food! I got the chicken pot pie for the first time in my life, and I think it is definitely a child’s favorite. The Irish egg is a bit expensive (2 halves $14) but the service is nice.

Fraunces Tavern isnt just a restaurant, its a living piece of history. Stepping into this 18th-century establishment is like stepping back in time. Imagine George Washington and the Founding Fathers walking these very floorboards! The food is amazing! Classic American fare with modern twists. The New England clam chowder, steak, and braised short rib sliders are must-tries. Generous portions, reasonable prices.Service is phenomenal! Our knowledgeable waiter answered all our questions and made sure we had everything. For history buffs, the museum on the second floor is fascinating. • Review 50 (2023-01-04 - Rating: 5)

We booked ahead for a Friday evening dinner when visiting New York. We were fortunate to get a nice window seat in the dining area for two. The ambiance was good to loud, with maybe a few other guests slightly louder than necessary but we were fortunate to not be seated next to them.Service was fine, but if were honest it was sometimes a little disjointed, seemed the waiters were spread a little thin sometimes. The food though was brilliant, and we were very impressed and pleased with our choices. For this reason alone, wed return when we are next in NYC.

  • Review 51 (2024-02-13 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 53 (2024-11-28 - Rating: 5)

Aaaamazing food! Fun atmosphere. My teenage son loved it too. The charcuterie board was great, pot pie phenomenal and the toffee pudding…oh goodness. We will be back.

  • Review 54 (2019-06-27 - Rating: 5)

Portions are more than enough and some items are great for sharing. Something I didnt know before being seated is that there are 2 sides to the restaurant and they have different menus! One side (the side we werent seated at) had better vegetarian options. The real reason to visit is the museum though! I had no idea we would need a couple hours to explore all the different floors and rooms that compromise this museum. Definitely worth a visit for any American History fan!It is easy to walk from here to Trinity Church, or to the Battery.

  • Review 55 (2024-02-15 - Rating: 4)

Came here on a Saturday night for post dinner drinks and boy what a fun and cozy bar! This place is huge and the Christmas decor is so cute. Drinks were delicious and cute. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a cozy, low-key vibe.We were at the hideout bar and the drinks were mostly gin-based with non-gin alternatives as well!

  • Review 57 (2020-08-29 - Rating: 5)

Fraunces Tavern is a great choice for a date, family dinner, etc. It’s also neat that there’s history that goes along with the restaurant. I’m bummed that I didn’t get to see the inside of the restaurant, thanks COVID, but judging by pictures it seems awesome. I will say that the outdoor seating/live music setup they had was one of the better situations I’ve seen in the city.As far as food goes, I really enjoyed my entree. I ordered the salmon, and it was cooked exceptionally well. The inside was softer than the outside, and they hit the desirable “crisp” on the outside of the fish perfectly. The cauliflower purée, as well as the mushrooms, complemented the fish well and did outweigh the flavor of the salmon. The service here was good, but nothing outstanding. I really want to come back to dry another dish, as well as to see the interior of the restaurant. Overall, though, I was more than satisfied with my experience at Fraunces Tavern!

  • Review 58 (2022-09-22 - Rating: 5)

Even though I was greeted by an unpleasant amount of scaffolding due to exterior renovations, Fraunces Tavern has proven itself to be a restaurant that is actually worth coming to.I think most people become familiar with this restaurant due to it being the oldest in NYC which is great and all, but that means nothing to me if the food isnt good. And thank God, it was. Yes, the interior design is nice and obviously very unique, but the quality and taste of food is always be my main consideration when leaving a review. For starters, we arrived a little early to our 5PM reservation, but we were still able to get seated immediately and order starters while they transitioned to the dinner menu.I ordered their chicken wings with buffalo sauce and they were pretty good. Im not sure if I would go as far as to say it was the best wings I ever had though (as someone in another review said) because there are only so many ways you can make buffalo wings before it stops being buffalo wings. So for me, it was pretty standard-tasting, but also had a little bit of an added crisp which is what I enjoy. I just wish they would give more blue cheese because the small cup they give with it isnt enough for 8 pieces of wings that are on the large side. I didnt bother asking for more though because I was afraid of what the additional charge might be.Im going to breeze past everything else I tried afterwards because I want to mention a few more things so here it goes:Scotch Egg - This was my first time trying a scotch egg and it was great, but I cant convince myself that spending $15 on a single egg with some sausage around it is worth it or ever will be worth it.Berkshire Pork Chop - As someone who doesnt even like pork chops, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this tastes. The parsnip puree was truly a welcome addition to the dish.Handmade Mac & Cheese - I had almost forgotten how good mac and cheese could taste. It was light, yet flavorful and satisfying. It didnt have that weightiness to it that some homemade mac and cheese dishes do when they get piled high with cheeses like cheddar and mozzarella. This mac and cheese made good use of the fontina, cheddar, and parmesan to deliver something incredibly satisfying.Chocolate Sticky Toffee Pudding - Very good and I liked the ice cream. Now here are are some of my general pros and cons:CONS- Prices here are steep. Even the cola was $6 for a bottle thats smaller than a kids juice box. (not an exaggeration. theyre only 200ml).- Our server changed twice which wasnt a huge deal, but there were times where we didnt know who to call over because the person who we thought was our server just wasnt around.- Not a fan of the restroom. Im not sure if its just me, but I feel like the whole historic preservation thing should end at the restroom. The wooden stalls look pretty beaten up and the rest of the bathroom that IS semi-modern isnt so great either. The restaurant may have been established in 1762, but I want to use a 2022 restroom with automatic faucets and paper towel dispensers. Sue me.- The wooden benches start to get uncomfortable after a while- which I guess doubles as a subtle reminder that we may have been there too long lol. Theyre not horrible though, but just giving anyone reading a heads up if they plan on visiting.- The seating arrangement is pretty compact. We had a very talkative party sit next to us which wasnt the MOST pleasant, but Ive dealt with worse so it hardly ruined my experience.PROS- The ambience is unmatched. Between the flickering of candle lights, the cozy seating area, and great music, youre bound to feel at ease while eating here.- The servers were friendly and quick to respond whenever we needed them. One of them even walked me to the bathroom after I asked where it was.- Great food (this ones a no-brainer).Overall, had a great experience here and will definitely be back to try the filet mignon on a stone as well as another chicken wing flavor. I hope they dont become too busy during the fall months.

  • Review 59 (2023-09-23 - Rating: 4)

This is a really cool establishment. Very old vibes - this is a bar/ restaurant/ museum. The architecture is classic American architecture - the place doesn’t opened in 1700s!!!Good selection of beers and the food is pretty decent… staff was nice and friendly.

  • Review 60 (2019-01-04 - Rating: 5)

Fraunces Tavern was a great restaurant. We didn’t have an opportunity to go through the museum upstairs, be we enjoyed our dining experience. Stepping inside was like stepping back in time. Loved the decor, and the different rooms to give it an intimate feel. We sat near the band, which was fantastic - incredibly talented musicians. The music and atmosphere set the mood, and the food didn’t disappoint! My husband had the Reuben and devoured it. I had the chicken Cobb salad, and almost completely finished it. Delicious!

The roast beef had an incredible flavor. Drinks were good with a great variety. The fact that the tavern has been open since 1762 is wild!!

Overall rating: 4.9I have been coming to this place since I moved here 10 years ago. I’m always hesitant about tourist places, but wow, I love it.Their wings are so good. Their lobster mac & cheese is good. Their oysters are amazing & fresh!I will say it’s a tad too expensive for what I’m getting, but we are in FiDi & it is a tourist spot.. so I can’t really be too upset. On Sunday’s they sometimes play bluegrass music & it is soo good! Def look it up before hand because they have a specific time they play.I just absolutely love this restaurant and will be back many times in the future!

We saved a seat for ourselves using Resy and found that everything was in order when we arrived. They offered us a seat in the whisky bar next to the live jazz band and we were able to eat earlier than our reservation. Every member of the staff we interacted with was pleasant. Our wait staff in particular did a great job of attending to us and our children. Our seat was a bit uncomfortable, but I took it as a side effect of being in such a historic place. The music and atmosphere was great. The food was good. Definitely recommend!

Loved this place! Prices were super reasonable for quality food and generous portion sizes. The pear & arugula salad was great and big enough for 2 people to share as an appetizer. The Bison burger and truffle parm fries did not disappoint.

I have visited the site previously for its museum upstairs (Worth the time & money). This time, I went here for a bon voyage party. They had very attentive service, great beer on tap (I had an IPA) and the salads are delicious! I ordered the arugula and pear salad. Next time I drop by, I’ll try to aim for happy hour.

An institution, the historic Fraunces Tavern continues to offer great customer service and delicious, well-made food. We asked the waitstaff for recommendations and each recommendation worked out perfectly for our group. The food tastes great and the experience feels unique.

Great Tavern in a historic building! Drinks and dinner were exceptional! Walked next door to the museum which is chock full of history. I plan on going back!

  • Review 75 (2024-07-09 - Rating: 5)

I would always pass by here with my wife. Until one day we had enough free time to enter. From outside alone its very attractive. The lighting and mood setting such a time capsule. Mind you this was daytime like happy hour. I would strongly suggest this for a date night. Great draft selection, knowledgeable bartenders. The food is great for steak. Everything else around the room kept making me ask what it was. Overall dope experience a must try and favorite.

Unexpected find in the financial District of New York. Love the history and decor of this place. We just came for drinks and the bar seemed a bit shortstaffed, and we had a bit of a wait. The drink was worth the wait though. The bar we were and had two beers and both of them were frozen. Staff very friendly. Would come back again next time I’m in town.

  • Review 77 (2023-07-08 - Rating: 5)

Sat at Independence Bar on Saturday afternoon and the experience was great. Bartender was personable and the beer is cold. Neat landmark vibe. Cant comment on food. Tick it off your list, its worth it.

This place was full of lots of little nooks and rich with history. Food was nearly excellent, the cook on my New York strip was way off (ordered med rare and came med well+) but everything else was awesome.

  • Review 80 (2022-05-28 - Rating: 5)

The BEST place in the Downtown area. Its historical significance as the place where George Washington gave his farewell address to his commanding officers is strictly secondary. The food, atmosphere, beer selection, and service is fantastic. Happily, Fraunces does not have a single television in the bar; people go there to socialize and enjoy life face-to-face.

  • Review 81 (2024-12-29 - Rating: 5)

Amazing place to have a lunch meeting - I wish I had more time to pay attention to all of the history they have in this building which is the oldest in Manhattan!

  • Review 82 (2020-01-05 - Rating: 5)

The place is very interesting by itself, historical, with more than 300 years, they even have a museum inside. Its also really cool to explore the many different rooms, all on low light, keeping their tavern mood. The food is really honest, generous portions and a price range that is affordable compared to other places on the surroundings.

  • Review 83 (2022-09-11 - Rating: 5)

Place looks smaller than it is. Various environments. Attentive and friendly attendants. Flavored foods. Tasty drinks. We had a blues show played live. A must see for anyone going to or living in NY.

  • Review 84 (2021-05-17 - Rating: 5)

I cannot tell a lie...at least when it comes to this place. Having just come from Green-Wood Cemetery where the Battle of Brooklyn took place its nice to go to the place where George Washington said goodbye to his fellow officers at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War.I doubt the soldiers of the Continental Army were able to order a bison burger with fries but it is a good choice for lunch. There are a lot of local brews available at this historic place. While this place may date back to the 18th century they have modernized. They do accept credit cards and the restrooms are American Standard.

  • Review 85 (2024-07-16 - Rating: 5)

Stunning in every way. I’ve only been in the city for a couple weeks and I’ve already gone thrice. Food? Amazing. They have so much to offer, including plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options. My favorite thing so far is easily their fries (both Parmesan truffle and sweet potato) but their entrees are also spectacular. I’ve gotten their roasted salmon on squash purée twice and it’s been incredible, as well as their quinoa omelet when I came here for brunch.Their staff is friendly and willing to help- the restaurant seems to always have plenty of space so they’re always willing to show you to a good seat. That said, the tavern’s atmosphere is consistent throughout and there are hardly any “bad” seats (though the bar is a little louder than the main dining room) and everything feels period typical thanks to the carefully chosen decor and natural wood.

  • Review 86 (2021-05-04 - Rating: 5)

This place is living history! Literally. I first learned of Fraunces Tavern in grade school. George freaking Washington was here. He bade farewell to his troops here. (Saving the nascent country by putting on his spectacles here -Google it). That being said, we came here for the food, not just the amazing, step back into the 1700s atmosphere.Had the lobster mac n cheese. So much lobster practically a 1:1 ratio with the the macaroni, pretty amazing. Also the Tavern Burger. Perfectly cooked, topped with bacon and onion ring. GW would have been proud and I was extremely happy with the meal. Also the service was incredible. Considering how busy the waiter was, he was so attentive to our table, prompt and extremely courteous. This place gets no better. Wish I could give more stars.Enjoy

  • Review 87 (2023-10-08 - Rating: 5)

Oldest tavern in NYC where George Washington said goodbye to his troops after the war. You can stand in the same room he met in upstairs and see incredible memorabilia from the days. Food good, usually live band in bar area. Relaxing and festive.

This place it great. Service is on point and staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Given thw history here, whether you are a tourist or new Yorker, this place never disappoints. The food is also magic!! Brought my sister and her partner here who are out of towners and they were so happy.

  • Review 89 (2023-08-06 - Rating: 5)

What a cool old bar. George Washington had his farewell dinner there. Huge amount of booze was served at that party. They make a nice old fashioned there and have a good drink menu food was great as well as the service.

  • Review 90 (2019-08-10 - Rating: 5)

This place is a 5+ stars, at least for those of us who love ambience, good food, great beer, coupled with being surrounded by history. George Washington toasted his troops here in 1783 at the end of the revolutionary war. The place has tried to stay true to its history. I never grow tired of visiting this place, one of my favorite lower Manhattan haunts.

  • Review 91 (2022-09-25 - Rating: 5)

It was an absolute honor enjoying a drink and meal inside an establishment frequented by the father of our country, George Washington. You can really experience the rich history of a great city and country with each passing breath, and not just through its candle-lit dining rooms.

  • Review 92 (2023-11-26 - Rating: 5)

Very nice, historic atmosphere. The pub is complete with attentive service and high level pub fare. Definitely a must try

  • Review 93 (2024-08-27 - Rating: 4)

A restaurant older than the nation itself, now if that isnt a killer pitch for a place, I dont know what is!The venue is a maze of halls, bars and rooms on two floors, so ask if you can have a look around before deciding on where to sit.The staff is professional and helpful but came across as a little stressed and short on time when we went there (we still got all the service we asked for though, even some small talk). The food was OK but also the least interesting part of the visit. Perhaps its better to go there for a drink and a light snack. Its a pity though, because this place deserves more. Making it a fine dining restaurant would make it less accessible for most people however, which would be a shame because its very much worth the visit for its historical properties. One more thing: please honour the dress code (causal smart) and dont come in your functional city wear. Show the place the respect it deserves and raise the end of the bar that youre responsible for.

  • Review 94 (2022-07-26 - Rating: 5)

We loved this place so much we went a couple more times just for drinks while we were in town. Cool spot if youre into history. Vibe inside is cool with a lot to take in. There is also a museum upstairs (for a small fee), but if you just want a souvenir from the museum just walk up to the entrance for free. Food was great and the beer selection was good. There was live music on one of our visits which was nice and we could still hear well enough to have a convo. We will definitely suggest this to friends who visit NYC and will visit again if were ever back in town.

The Fraunces Tavern is an amazing American restaurant that’s located in the Financial district of Lower Manhattan, New York. The restaurant’s building that played a major role in American history, most notably serving as the headquarters for George Washington during the American revolution, as well as housing offices for Federal officials in the early days of the Republic. Due its rich heritage, Frances Tavern is listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and is a New York City Landmark. In July of 2024, I brought and treated my wife and myself for lunch at the Frances Tavern and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience!!!The staff were very friendly and welcoming and promptly provided us with a very comfortable dining table in the Tallmadge room.My wife and I were deeply impressed with the beauty and elegance of the Tallmadge room and particularly loved its wooden floors, ceilings, its rustic settings, and its communal seatings. Our server Riley, H was very polite and professional and did a great job on addressing our inquiries regarding the menu options and noting our orders. Both my wife and I found that our meals were very well cooked, perfectly seasoned and superbly delicious!!! My wife ordered and enjoyed her steak and egg entree while I absolutely loved my tavern burger entree!!!If you are history enthusiast, and would love the opportunity to dine at an establishment of immense cultural and social significance, then you should definitely visit and dine at the Frances Tavern!!

Excellent outdoor seating with individual igloo style or partial cover. Every single person was very friendly, accommodating and attentive. Margarita and Old fashioned are good strong cocktails. Cucumber gimlet tasted like lysol. Scotch egg was tasty but pricey for $15 for one egg. Short rib burger was excellent and priced well. Chicken pot pie is a must have and a quality comfort dish.

It is not often that you can dine in a Tavern that was founded in 1783 and where some of our founding fathers hung out andGeorge Washington thanked and said farewell to his staff after the end of the Revolutionary War. The place reeks of history. It was a pleasant happenstance that our server, Kara Scullin, was a UAB graduate who moved to NYC to pursue a singing career. She did a fantastic job for us.Off of the brunch menu for an appetizer I ordered the Maryland Crab Cake (it came with avocado purée, frizzled onions) I also had the Avocado & Burrata Toast(cherry tomatoes, popcorn shoots, roasted pine nuts, on sourdough - I didn’t add the poached egg - and, not listed on the menu, it was toped with a large ball of white cheese. The crab cake was good - but with too much breading. The toast was very interesting and delicious.Others in our party ordered the fish and chips which they said was very good.We really enjoyed our experience.

  • Review 100 (2022-04-24 - Rating: 4)

You can palpably feel the history oozing from the walls of this joint. It was so on point, and there’s a museum I’ve gotta go back for! Dark wood surrounds you, as well as whiskeys, wines, ales, and drinks galore, low lighting adds extra mystique and the menu held a variety of choices (one star off for not having complete printed menus to make ordering easier). Tasty food. Everywhere you turn, there’s something to stare at and they don’t rush you to leave so long as your drink’s there. Live music, I’d suggest dressy casual wear (don’t be bummy), and you may or may not need to make a rez, depending on the hr. We got there around 5pm, right before the dinner crowd and “reserved” table signs. So many rooms and corridors! A repeat, most def.

  • Review 101 (2022-08-06 - Rating: 5)

What a beautiful slice of New York and our founding fathers history! Love that they have kept many original potions of the structure and decor intact. Dont do too much renovating as it can detract from the historically vibe. Ie: the ceiling in the dining room doesnt fit the era.Great menus items. Also reasonably priced. Our charcuterie board was perfect!Thank you for sharing our American history!

We are in the habit of visiting the oldest bar in each city we go to, and this was it for New York City!!! Built in 1719 and the site were George Washington addressed his troops in 1783, this place has some history. The decor was awesome!!! You could feel the history dripping off the walls. They have church pews for sitting for some tables. And the holiday decorations were beautiful. The service was excellent. The food was pretty bland. The cream of turkey soup lacked anything of seasoning and was still wanting after half a shaker of salt and pepper went in it. George Washington’s Horse back did not seem to have much horse meat in it—just a bacon wrapped date that was ok. The brown bread was a bit dry (no butter given). The mashed potatoes (the “creamy red mash” or something like that) was quite good.

  • Review 118 (2024-05-17 - Rating: 5)

This is not a five-star restaurant, but the food is good. The portions are a bit large - as most things seem to be in the U.S. The establishment was recommended by my Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Tour guide and I am glad we went! The building is restored but there are many original portions.

  • Review 119 (2019-09-21 - Rating: 5)

The oldest pub in town - the town of NYC! Just beside the dead rabbit, and the irony is this place is like the rabbit hole: you just go from one room to another room, another atmosphere, another vibe!!Starts off with the fine dining - which is mostly reserved - then transitions to the good-old-pub we all know!Of course not the place for engaging or large group conversations - rather the general college ruckus!! (That is, the pub is too loud to talk)

  • Review 123 (2021-06-12 - Rating: 4)

Food was above average at best. Service was pretty poor. The waitress on this particular night was just clueless. So ive wandered into what i assumed would be a tourist trap (GWs OG Pub Crawl choice?) multiple times just because it was close, convenient, and had a pretty tasty looking menu. The first time was a nice impromptu lunch with a friend - totally good, good vibes and a mix of locals and tourists; then a brunch with a friend - again impromptu and we were surprised to find a live band playing chill tunes on the first floor; and then last night when a friend looked up piano bar and we discovered THERE IS AN ENTIRE UPSTAIRS FLOOR (that is NOT GWs museum - thats on the other side of the building), THAT IS A PIANO BAR.So we sat, ate chicken pot pie on a cold night, had some cocktails, and genuinely sang out loud (sometimes a bit too aggressively) with the amazing artists who took the stage, in a nice, leather couches, carpets on the floor, community chatting vibe.So fun, so unexpected, so coming back.Def recommmended. Thanks George for the hot tip.

If you love history and great cocktails this is your spot. The top floor is a museum where George Washington gave his farewell address to his officers after the revolutionary war. Although I’m not sure how much is original, this is the spot and they do have an actual bust of Gdubs head which was taken while he was living. Down stairs has a great atmosphere and the NYC sour was perfect.

Lots of cool rooms to explore as you are headed to the loo. Museum - George Washington apparently hung out here. I can just see it as the president to be walks in George! Usual? Enjoyed my steak and potatoes with my flight of beer.

Great historical restaurant around since the 1700s. Food and drinks were tasty and the atmosphere was fantastic.

This is a special place to eat with a celebrated history. A beautiful Georgian facade welcomes you and there are a number of bars inside some quite cosy. It is very popular with workers from the financial district where it is located. It is very busy and very loud in some areas. The food is very good and portions are big. I would advise just having a main course and,if still hungry, have one of the delectable desserts. I always have clam chowder which , although a starter, is filling. Service is good considering that servers have to negotiate busy bars. I would ask to be seated in the restaurant area rather than a bar. A lively place which has a good atmosphere. Well worth visiting if you are in Downtown, Manhattan.

Very cool place with some interesting history and George Washington apparently had dinner here with his generals at the end of the revolutionary war. The food is quite good and they have a varied selection of draft beers.

Lovely place for drink or for eat. Perfect services. They had to ask me who I wanted the meat, because it was like a shoe. In general very good place

We absolutely loved our time here for lunch. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The history in this building is wonderful to see as well. I was happy with the bathroom, which in older buildings can sometimes be a bit scary. LolWe ordered the Mac & Cheese with bacon(+3) to split for an appetizer. Yum. Then, I ordered the Pomelo Spritz cocktail. It was light, refreshing, delicious, and exactly what I needed. For entrees, we ordered the Skirt Steak Frites and the Jefferson Cobb Salad with Grilled Chicken. It was all cooked perfectly and definitely hit the spot after our long morning of walking and sightseeing. We would return again without hesitation! Thank you!

After my friend took me here the first time, I loved it so much I was back with a different friend the next week. I haven’t tried any of their food but the beer and cocktails were delightful. I also love the interior—cozy overall and each room (there’s like 5 different bars) having a different atmosphere to it. I don’t know what it looks like other times but when I went during late November-early December, they had a lot of lights and ornaments decorating the bar that seemed to enhance the coziness.

Very tasty dishes and great serving. I was also pleased with the wonderful people who work in this restaurant. We were served by a waiter Tamara and thanks to her courtesy I was pleased to be there from the first second.Great location, I will definitely go back to this place.

We were hoping to go to the Dead Rabbit next door but had a kiddo with us and the wait time was about 45 minutes so we stumbled into this place. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the fact that there is a lot of history behind it is also a plus. They were able to take us right away which was nice. The service was slow and I had to get up a couple times to find someone to help us. The food was good, nothing mind blowing. Drinks were good too.

Amazing food, grilled octopus appetizer with chorizo one of the most unique and amazing dishes I ever tasted. Everything else was top quality and tasting, great service, and a live band to top it off!

History, beer and whiskey. Absolute perfection. Great drinks and atmosphere. The staff is excellent and very welcoming. The only downfall is that its so far from where I live that I cant make this my neighborhood place.
