Very New York Italian restaurant with some of the best pasta I’ve had in years. Exquisite service and food was incredible. Would highly recommend

  • Review 2 (2024-09-09 - Rating: 4)

The food and prices were great. I had the lamb chops with potatoes and spinach. The fava bean salad, pesto linguini, and calf liver were also great choices.

  • Review 3 (2024-10-20 - Rating: 5)

A great new find for us. Very warm and welcoming staff with outstanding food. A definite repeat.

  • Review 4 (2024-11-16 - Rating: 5)

Tasty food, well cooked, well priced, deep wine list BTG, solid desserts, and attentive service. Killer Italian restaurant - about as good as it gets!

  • Review 5 (2019-08-23 - Rating: 5)

We had my godfathers 85th birthday here. They let us bring our own cake and they cut it and served it for us. The food is always great here. Traditional, Italian food. Always fresh. Service was fast and they were great at accommodating our party of 6.

  • Review 6 (2024-04-15 - Rating: 4)

Cute local Italian restaurant with good pastas and decent portions. Service is a bit brusque but overall friendly. Keep in mind the restaurant is cash-only.

  • Review 7 (2024-02-23 - Rating: 5)

Partner and I just moved in to the UWS and this place has already become our delivery go-to! Food is always amazing and consistent and Edward is always patient in answering all our questions and suggesting recommendations!!! Try their Spinach Ricotta Ravioli!!!

  • Review 8 (2023-07-17 - Rating: 5)

Ate dinner here for the first time and the food is amazing. Layers of flavors and sophisticated menu options. I had the braised organic chicken with capers and currants and flourless chocolate cake for dessert as I’m gluten free. Delish. Will definitely be back.

  • Review 9 (2024-11-01 - Rating: 5)

We love this place! Have been going for over 20 years. Not just for the cacio e pepe and lamb shank and ever-changing specials, but for the cozy, homey, caring ambience. The love! Many of the same waiters all this time. That says a lot. Weve been for birthdays and parties and evening-for-two. Were always happy here. Wonderful wines from Sicily and Italy too. We crave his dishes when were away from NYC! Family-owned and run.

  • Review 10 (2023-11-26 - Rating: 5)

After 4 years away from the city I love, it’s good to know that in the post-COVID world, this oasis still exists. The Grilled Lamb Chops with Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Sautéed Greens are still perfect. The Malbec is still a standout on the wine list and the Tiramisu is worth every bite. There’s nothing better than starting it all off with a Frisée Salad. (I love their Crème Brûlée.) The atmosphere at night is great, although on this winter night, it was somewhat too warm. The wait staff are knowledgeable and attentive.

  • Review 11 (2022-03-24 - Rating: 5)

Very friendly staff! we had a large party and they brought a table from outside for us. food was absolutely delicious. lots of locals so you know it’s good. nice atmosphere and close to the subway station. will be coming back on our next trip to NYC!

  • Review 12 (2024-07-05 - Rating: 5)

Amazing Food and ambiance! Try their homemade Pasta and Creme Brulee!!!

  • Review 13 (2023-02-03 - Rating: 5)

Gennaros is wonderful. This friendly neighborhood establishment boasts a cozy aesthetic, delicious wine, and spectacular food. I had the spaghetti and the warm pear tart. The bartender, Elisa, when I asked for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc recommended a delicious alternative. This is the perfect place for a date night or a small family gathering. Highly recommend

  • Review 14 (2020-02-16 - Rating: 5)

Very nice and cozy place and I was told that the food here is good. After visiting this place, I know why. I had the chicken cutlet layered with spinach, potato and cheese with one of their dark beers. The meal was excellent along with the service. The place was packed with a few tables for 2 here and there. Best to reserve a table if you have a party of 3 or more. Great evening!

  • Review 15 (2022-07-22 - Rating: 5)

Had a delicious dinner with the family for my wifes birthday, along with great service. We ordered the creamy polenta with mushrooms to start. Comes out super hot, and gets the meal started right. The pasta with pork ragu and duck for entrees. Closed with chocolate cake.

  • Review 16 (2024-12-14 - Rating: 5)

Great food and wine menu it’s a cash only business

  • Review 17 (2024-08-29 - Rating: 5)

Friendliest restaurant staff I met in New York. Very helpful, great food and great value too.

  • Review 18 (2023-10-24 - Rating: 4)

The food is delicious, I got the penne pomodoro. But the service could be better. The maitre d was a mess. He couldnt even seat me with the rest of my party. I found them myself.

  • Review 19 (2023-10-18 - Rating: 4)

A mainstay of the Upper West Side serving a wide variety of well prepared Italian fare. Ive been eating there occasionally for years and have not been disappointed.

  • Review 20 (2023-02-27 - Rating: 5)

Make your way to the Upper West side and join the locals at this longtime- but going- stronger than ever Italian. Always fresh, delicious and unique with an awesome wine list. Tremendous value.

  • Review 21 (2023-05-01 - Rating: 5)

A neighborhood joint like Gennaro cannot survive or even thrive unless it offers nop-notch food and service.Best Italian in town. You simply cannot go wrong with any dish.

  • Review 22 (2024-10-30 - Rating: 5)

Our go-to spot for Italian on the Upper West Side. The food is always fantastic and the vibe is super cozy. The wine selection can’t be beat and the service feels like you’re being take care of by family.

  • Review 23 (2024-10-03 - Rating: 5)

Incredible food. Incredible service. Incredible people watching.

  • Review 24 (2023-08-16 - Rating: 5)

Probably my favorite Italian restaurant on the UWS. Old school vibe with great food and wine. My wife and I are frequent customers. Can’t go wrong on the menu.

  • Review 25 (2022-03-12 - Rating: 4)

Neighborhood favorite for southern Italian fare. Nice salads, good housemade pastas. Reasonably priced and cash only!!! Outdoor shed very popular with those who bring their dogs to supper.

  • Review 26 (2018-11-30 - Rating: 5)

I feel a bit embarrassed for being around this restaurant for the past three years and not knowing much apart from the fact that I walk my dog around the block at night and it is always full, every single night, so I finally had enough I decided to try. They dont take cards and I was surprised, but Ive noticed after seating but before eating and the wife had a checkbook. The service was fantastic and the food from the bread and butter to the deserts was all incredible. My wife had the gnocchi and I had the Veal chop and we both enjoyed our food a lot. The creme brulee and Tiramisu at the end was awesome. We also had a great bottle of wine and the bill was very reasonable with including tips.WIll definitely return and recommend.

  • Review 27 (2022-01-01 - Rating: 5)

My favorite italian place on the upper west side. doesn’t take card so bring cash. also doesn’t do reservations

  • Review 28 (2018-12-02 - Rating: 4)

Food was excellent as usual, although they had many specials, we chose to go with a couple of standbys, the Cornish game hen is always fresh and properly crisp, the pasta dishes are excellent especially the spicy cheese pasta. Skip the Italian wines by the glass, very pedestrian.

  • Review 29 (2018-11-09 - Rating: 4)

One of the better Italian restaurants on the upper west side. Ive been going here for years and have never had a bad meal. Great pasta dishes and more. Friendly staff and really good service.

  • Review 30 (2021-09-03 - Rating: 5)

Excellent in every way, every time. Great, great food. Amazing service. Servers always eager to make your dining experience as pleasant as can be. My family has eaten at Gennaro for at least 15 years.

  • Review 31 (2021-06-13 - Rating: 5)

🔥🔥🔥This is one my favorite restaurants in all of NYC. it’s also where I bring out of towners who want proper Italian food. The owner makes sure you are happy and the staff is. very helpful . I crave their bolognese and octopus salad. I’ve literally had everything on their menu and it is truly delicious. Their panna cotta is SOOO good too. In all the years Ive been coming, Ive never had a bad meal. Ever.

  • Review 32 (2024-12-21 - Rating: 5)

    Best liver and polenta!

  • Review 33 (2019-10-16 - Rating: 5)

Foods great but the tables are uncomfortably close and service can be spottyUPDATE: 2019I just spotted this 7 year old review and had to update it from 3 to 5 stars. This became a neighborhood favorite once they expanded into adjoining spaces. The service is always attentive and the food excellent. It is not cheap, and often packed during normal eating hours (Im all for early-bird eating so not such an issue for me).

  • Review 34 (2013-11-26 - Rating: 4)

I am a native New Yorker and will keep to the directness of how we are known to be :)Food: Very good. I really enjoyed their penne and their tortelloni.Drinks: Great wine list!Space: The indoor dining is very intimate and cozy because it is very small. Making the mixing and mingling a whole restaurant affair. Scene: Date night. Romantic dinner.Crowd: Mostly locals, professionals, families, and retirees.Service: Very Good. Leave your plastic at home. This is an all cash establishment.

  • Review 35 (2017-05-21 - Rating: 5)

This is a very popular restaurant! There was a long line when we arrived but it didnt take too long to get a table. Even though they say no reservations on their website, you should still call and let them know youre coming. The food was incredible and reasonably priced. Every single dish we got was amazing.

  • Review 36 (2022-06-18 - Rating: 4)

Old neighborhood favorite. Somewhat overrated for the price. Waiter was a delight but the supporting staff throughout the night didnt know where they were bringing what dish. Shouldnt be hard to learn which table is which.

  • Review 37 (2019-04-02 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite italian restaurants and it never disappoints. Cash only but an excellent value for exceptional food. Many of the negative reviews are because its cash only but cash only is great as credit card processing is expensive! The savings are passed onto the customer and most notably reflected on the wine list They have great wines and I highly recommend their entry level nebbiolo (bottle) for a light, yet, well integrated red wine - its much much lighter than my preferred Langhe Nebbiolos but the price cant be beat!

  • Review 38 (2024-10-19 - Rating: 5)

Great waiter, we had dinner at the barra

  • Review 39 (2023-04-24 - Rating: 5)

Reliably fantastic food and great service. Cash only and on the expensive side, especially considering small portions. Can be crowded even after its necessary expansion years ago.

  • Review 40 (2016-06-26 - Rating: 4)

Nice quaint place on the Boulevard. The owner is this really cool Italian dude who always greets his customers with a smile. I believe hes a huge soccer fan as they always have Serie A games on the tube (big plus). The staff are very friendly and attentive. Been here for breakfast and dinner and have been impressed by both. My favorite dish thus far has been their salmon with asparagus. Havent tried their coffee yet but its nice to see a joint with an espresso machine in Sunnyside. Highly recommend SoleLuna.

  • Review 41 (2013-02-13 - Rating: 4)

Gennaro is our go-to neighborhood spot. You always count on fabulous food at a reasonable price. They have managed to maintain the food quality despite an expansion(much needed due to the lines!) a few years back.Favorites include: All starters, especially the kale salad. Lamb shank . . .

  • Review 42 (2020-01-02 - Rating: 5)

We walked in for an impromptu birthday dinner. the staff wasnt only accommodating but kind and helpful. the food.....wow fresh, generous portions amazing. I will return.

  • Review 43 (2015-11-04 - Rating: 5)

Gennaro is our go to place in the city and neighborhood for Italian - the specials are always the best especially the cauliflower soup, the risotto, lamb chops... but everything on the menu is awesome - the spicy penne, kale salad, sausage... we love brining guests here. But if you are alone or with one person, the wine bar is the place to sit.

  • Review 44 (2007-04-22 - Rating: 4)

A gem on the upper west side, notwithstanding the cramped feelings and no-reservation policy. the food varies from very good to amazing, with occasional spectacular subtle southern italian fare. the cash-only policy is annoying, but not a problem if you are prepared for it.

  • Review 45 (2023-10-14 - Rating: 5)

Neighborhood staple forever. Teeny storefront expanded to 3 but still with consistently great authentic Italian. Worth traveling to

  • Review 46 (2020-10-23 - Rating: 5)

Everything was amazing but the gnocchi was truly melt-in-your-mouth good. Also ordered the fava bean salad, pappardelle oxtail ragú, and tiramisu. Everything was delicious and the staff was incredibly friendly and on their game. Felt like a great neighborhood joint and will definitely be coming back. + Spacious outdoor seating.

  • Review 47 (2021-10-26 - Rating: 5)

It was our first time in Little Italy and came across this awesome place. The food was awesome, we were able to try a variety of plates and my favorite was the Lobster Ravioli. Staff was awesome and it was an overall great time!

  • Review 48 (2019-05-16 - Rating: 5)

Very personable employees that are attentive and standing by to assist with questions. Large wine menu. Romantic atmosphere. Fast service and fair prices. Clean facilities.

  • Review 49 (2012-03-06 - Rating: 4)

Gennaro is a solid italian restaurant and reasonably priced. it can get often crowded because people love this place and it has only small (wood) tables. pros: good food but not amazing. cons: cash only - small and noisy enviroment – “pushy” service especially in the weekends. it could be a 4 star restaurant if ometimes they didnt treat diners like mouths to be fed on a conveyor belt…

  • Review 50 (2021-05-10 - Rating: 5)

Nice staff excellent food friendly environment

  • Review 51 (2021-11-18 - Rating: 5)

Absolutely amazing! The food was INCREDIBLE!!! The saltimbocca di pollo alla romana was cooked so well, definitely was noting like I’ve had before. The real star was our server Micheal! He was so informative and helpful. He really elevated the experience.

  • Review 52 (2022-11-06 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 55 (2021-01-14 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 56 (2016-09-07 - Rating: 4)

Top quality food and acceptable prices. Very nice Italian atmosphere. The only thing that bothered me a little is, that they dont accept credit cards.

  • Review 57 (2020-01-20 - Rating: 5)

Cash only but this place is hilarious. I think the waiter listed 15 specials off the top of his head; I about lost it. Everything was good, Italian done right.

  • Review 58 (2019-11-21 - Rating: 5)

Lovely, authentic feeling restaurant. Very large menu and very friendly service. Loved it and will be back! Hard to find cacio e Pepe done right!

  • Review 66 (2023-12-08 - Rating: 5)

I have been coming here for around 18 years. Food is still excellent and service is timely. I hope they are around for another 18 more. It used to be pretty loud, but that has been handled at this point.I recently went back and it is as good as I remember. I always get the kale salad, and I enjoy their meat dishes.

Absolutely incredible and irreplaceable. My husband and I had our wedding dinner here after our big wedding had to be canceled due to Covid. My husband’s grandparents came here for years. The food is a unique and fresh take on classic, exquisite Italian. Every dish is thoughtful. Truly an upper west side gem.

One of my favorite Italian spots in all of NY - you are treated like family here and the food consistently NEVER disappoints -- Gennaro totally holds its own and definitely compares with all the expensive trendy downtown spots like Carbone that you cant even get into for the same quality at half the price. I cannot recommend this Upper West Side STAPLE highly enough!!

  • Review 115 (2019-04-07 - Rating: 5)

This restaurant has been around for 23 years because it is the very best Italian on the Upper West Side. The appetizers cannot be missed. From the classic endive salad with pecorino and pear to the octopus, Brussels sprouts, kale, and daily specials - they are delicious and a total delight. The pastas are always fantastic and the meats are great too. Always lots of specials added nightly. Sit at the bar or at a table, and the service is exceptional. Thank you Gennaro for a great dinner last night and every time.

  • Review 116 (2018-04-18 - Rating: 5)

Gennaro is authentic Italian - it is actually named after the owner who comes from the real place where food is sacred. Great hospitality - Maurizio, the maître, welcomes every guest and after 2 minutes he is your best friend. Menu includes Italian popular dishes, some with an American twist. Portions are large and dishes well presented. If you live in Upper West Side, Gennaro should become you favorite neighborhood place.

Nice table cloth Italian place. Cash only.

  • Review 119 (2019-12-02 - Rating: 5)

Dont go here -- more for me! Really delicious, simple, and lovely food. Family run and classy-festive.

  • Review 120 (2018-09-21 - Rating: 5)

Outstanding Italian. Very attentive staff. Standard menu is always great, and specials I have tried have also been excellent.

  • Review 121 (2017-12-28 - Rating: 5)

Fabulous food. Excellent service: attentive but not intrusive. We were catching up with a friend we hadn’t seen in years and didn’t feel rushed to leave as we sat and talked! Going back this weekend.

  • Review 122 (2018-09-13 - Rating: 4)

Be sure to bring cash only! Food was great!

  • Review 123 (2021-01-09 - Rating: 4)

Good fresh pasta, brocolini with garlic, grilled fish, good company make for a chilly but fun night out in their semi-enclosed cafe. Hard to get a table but worth trying.

  • Review 124 (2019-02-20 - Rating: 5)

This was a delicious meal. Very nice atmosphere. Swordfish cooked perfectly and pasta with just the right amount ofbite and flavor. Yummy

Old school Italian. Big portion and good. Buzzy.

  • Review 126 (2019-01-19 - Rating: 5)

My wife and I love it here. It’s how we treat ourselves. It is around the corner from us and truly feels like only locals in there. Davide recommended the duck last night and it was possibly one of the best meals I’ve ever had in NYC. Maybe I was hungry, but the man was right on. It was honestly so good I am sitting on the couch just thinking and decided to write this. I’ve never had a bad meal there. My wife loves all the pastas and the tiramisu. They always do great seafood. Their Italian wine selection is great. We love it so much I almost didn’t write a review! Grazie, Gennaro! See you soon.

  • Review 127 (2016-04-18 - Rating: 5)

Very great Italian restaurant that stands out from most places in this neighborhood. Gennaro seems to attract a neighborhood crowd - people that live close by and eat there often. Despite being cash only, the quality of food and wine selection outshines most Italian restaurants in NYC. This is a top gem.

  • Review 128 (2018-09-17 - Rating: 5)

I go to Gennaro on a regular basis. Yes, cash only is a royal pain but being Italian and raised on pasta, this place is about as good as pasta gets in NY. Atmosphere is perfect for dates, service fantastic and the wine list is exceptional and reasonable. Oh last point, given that the food is authentic, it wont be as seasoned as the American palate is used to, so a sprinkle of cheese gets the job done.

  • Review 129 (2017-03-29 - Rating: 4)

Gennaro is reliably excellent. Ive had fish, lamb, pasta, salads here: everything is fresh, simple and beautifully prepared. There is always a plethora of specials, so dont get too attached to your selection from the menu!

  • Review 134 (2019-06-29 - Rating: 5)

We moved in this neighborhood last year and for the first time We had dinner here. And then realized why didnt we come here soon? It really is two street down and for me hours works because I do eat my dinner early. Really great food, wine and very attentive staff.

  • Review 135 (2019-05-28 - Rating: 5)

This restaurant must have launched right after I left New York and Im happy to say on a visit I stopped in and loved it. The food was excellent, the wine even better, and the casual local atmosphere worth the trip.

  • Review 136 (2020-10-20 - Rating: 5)

The food is great and now you have the options of dining inside or outside. Inside was ideal for these COVID days, checking temperatures as you enter, tables spaced very far apart, bread served in bags, and everyone masked.

  • Review 137 (2011-12-24 - Rating: 4)

Great place, though not ideal for large groups. Food is some of the best Italian Ive had in the city. I had the ravioli (forget what the dish is exactly called) and it was amazing.

  • Review 138 (2019-09-01 - Rating: 5)

Gennaros is delicious. Great for all parties. Been coming here for years. Family loves it. Friends love it.

  • Review 139 (2018-12-21 - Rating: 5)

We always tremble with excitement at the thought of eating at Gennaro; the food is unfailingly innovative, the service attentive, the atmosphere homey and warm. Each visit gives us the opportunity to choose from the dizzying list of wonderful specials, so no need to bother with the menu!

  • Review 140 (2018-05-30 - Rating: 5)

I never write reviews for restaurants, or really any places I go for that matter. But the veal ravioli, the uncannily delicious kale salad, even the dang bread demanded I write this review. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere is classy but not imposing or uptight, though I could have done without the small children at the table next to us but who am I to stop someone from procreating. The service was exactly what was needed, they were knowledgable and fulfilled requests in no time and were always close by. It cannot be understated that this is one of the best Italian joints in Central Park West, maybe even New York City as a whole, possibly on Planet Earth. Seriously dude, that kale salad. You will thank me. And theres excellent gelato a block away! New York, man. This restaurant alone is worth your visit to this crazy peninsula.

Gennaro is a great neighborhood Italian restaurant (and worth a visit to the neighborhood, at that). Its got its quirks---no reservations, cash only---but has lovely ambience and fantastic food. Weve visited twice and will be back soon.

  • Review 147 (2019-06-26 - Rating: 4)

Excellent Italian food with a wide variety of wines. The specials were considerable and well thought out. The monkfish was great. The terimasu was very good. Cash only.

  • Review 149 (2017-02-17 - Rating: 4)

Delicious Italian restaurant on the UWS. CASH ONLY - but really good and reasonably priced. Very cute interior with friendly, attentive staff. Good menu with a long list of specials (so be sure youre paying attention). I got the buratta special which was amazing - they pair it with avocado, tomato and pomegranate seeds. I will definitely going back there.
