It was really cool bar. They had 3 floors. A small and intimate bar on the second floor. The third floor was a bar with some live jazz and the first floor had theater seating for a live performance happening there. Came at my brothers recommendation and I would pass that on!

  • Review 2 (2024-12-28 - Rating: 5)

NYC dive bar baby - I feel like you cant really have expectations from a dive bar, so what can I say.... it was cool, a nice place to hang and listen to some obscure local band playing a combo of instruments that one wouldnt expect from a quartet...it was a nice taste of NY... not for everyones taste I guess...authenticity is the word though.

  • Review 3 (2024-11-09 - Rating: 4)

Good spot for a different kind of night out. Bouncers were super friendly, the place is cool inside! Typical beer prices for NYC.

  • Review 4 (2022-04-03 - Rating: 5)

This is the kind of place you want to take someone whos visiting the city and wants to experience a hidden gem. But this is also a place you want to go regularly and befriend the bartenders. Theyve understandably adapted to support the Ukranian people at this time. Still retain their sense of history and old world charm.

  • Review 5 (2023-07-16 - Rating: 5)

A fun intimate space to see a show. There was no cover charge but you were encouraged to buy two drinks. The drinks ranged from $8 beer to $15 cocktails. The music was great. Get there before the doors open if you want to get a seat.

  • Review 6 (2024-07-11 - Rating: 5)

Mary is one of the best people at doing what she does. She is a very good person. We loved her service and her way of treating her clients. We appreciate you, Mary 🙂

  • Review 7 (2024-10-27 - Rating: 5)

One of the few remaining places in the City that still has that raw, grungy feel of the music venues in the 90s. Not for posh crowds

  • Review 8 (2021-10-22 - Rating: 4)

This is a small bar on the second floor that is decorated in a number of Soviet-era flags and propoganda posters. I got a vodka kahula and stood in the corner with a strong and good-flavored drink. Its very easy for it to be crowded, so unless youre with a group and can justify a table, it might be a bit awkward.

  • Review 9 (2020-02-29 - Rating: 5)

The KGB Bar is a great venue for theater, performance, and readings. Im most familiar with the bar on the second floor, where I attend the Fantastic Fiction monthly readings, and its a really fun place to hang out in.

  • Review 10 (2024-04-27 - Rating: 5)

Automatic 5 stars because they played Pigs (Three Different Ones) by Pink Floyd

  • Review 11 (2023-04-11 - Rating: 5)

I love this East Village gem of a bar its Red Room up the stairwell!

  • Review 12 (2019-07-02 - Rating: 4)

TYPICAL DIVE BAR UP A STEEP SET OF STEPS. THEY DO A FUN SHOW WITH UKULELE PERFORMERS. THE DRINKS ARE A LITTLE PRICEY BUT NOT UNUSUALLY HIGH FOR NYC.DECENTLY CLEAN BATHROOM,PROFESSIONAL STAFF.I THINK YOURE ALLOWED TO BRING YOUR OWN FOOD AS LONG AS YOUR BUYING DRINKS.

  • Review 13 (2023-01-25 - Rating: 4)

Very well decorated, staff was friendly. Was extremely busy on a Tuesday night.

  • Review 14 (2023-03-13 - Rating: 5)

My new hot spot in town.Located in East village comes this venue that has lot to offer. On the first floor there is a theatre where I attended a one person play and she was very talented. Theatre comes with 20 dollars coverage and optional tips for the performer. Then there s first floor that has KGB bar، super cozy and many seating options.Second floor has the live music, the red room. The owner paid attention to make this place as authentic as possible, great job 👍.

  • Review 15 (2022-10-22 - Rating: 5)

Great hidden spot for not too expensive drinks and nice live music. I wish they had any bar snacks though...

  • Review 16 (2024-04-29 - Rating: 5)

Super cool Soviet themed bar. Have been a few times. I love the art on the wall... especially the pyramid of the labor.

  • Review 17 (2023-10-15 - Rating: 5)

We had a couple of beers, sitting in the bar and chattered with the hostess that was kind to tell us a little bit about this places history. Not disappointed. Cozy and cool atmosphere.

  • Review 18 (2021-10-31 - Rating: 5)

Very nice bar, excellent staff and patrons

  • Review 19 (2024-03-09 - Rating: 5)

Was there for drinks. Nice vibe. Quite loud and crowded. Good place for drinks. Service is ok but can be slow due to crowd.

  • Review 20 (2022-12-28 - Rating: 5)

I adore this place! Its got such a weird vibe with the communist theme, literary history, poetry readings and strong dive bar drinks and attitude. The staff are no nonsense but theyll treat you right if you act right. Just be careful of those stairs!!

  • Review 21 (2024-07-15 - Rating: 5)

One of my favorite bars in the city! The bartenders are always really fun to talk to and the ambiance is great. Not trying too hard but still nice. I like that the jazz nights are really busy but you can go downstairs if you want to have conversations. Martinis are great too

  • Review 22 (2024-11-26 - Rating: 5)

Open mic poetry night was amazing. Cozy and creative vibe.

  • Review 23 (2021-02-18 - Rating: 5)

This is a cool, kitsch place to take a date you want to impress. It’s one of a kind aesthetic sets it apart from most other bars. The entranceway is epic, makes you feel like you’re going somewhere old and secret. Drink prices are solid too. Only gripe is there could be more seating.

  • Review 24 (2021-12-14 - Rating: 5)

We had a great time here! Thanks for the drinks and fun!

  • Review 25 (2024-09-29 - Rating: 5)

Good vibe, great people. Unforgettable nights, that Im having a hard time remembering

  • Review 26 (2021-04-06 - Rating: 5)

Great old world NYC underground charm. You can feel the history in the walls. Great vibes, kind staff and great drinks from Jonny D the bartender. Lori the hostess is so lovely, and accommodating. I cant wait to go back!

  • Review 27 (2018-03-17 - Rating: 4)

A great spot for a drink. Ive visited twice (both times on Friday night) and greatly enjoyed this bar. Standard bar drink options are available, including a short list of bottled beers. The environment is relaxed and its quiet enough to carry on a conversation.

  • Review 28 (2017-03-11 - Rating: 4)

A moody, atmospheric, Soviet-themed dive bar. A decent (but not extensive) beer/wine list and well drinks are available for decent prices. No food, but this is a bar you visit for the ambiance. There are plenty of decent places to eat nearby.Worth a visit if youre up for some red-soaked Soviet ambience or looking to prepare yourself for impending life under our Russian overlords.

  • Review 29 (2021-05-25 - Rating: 5)

A very special place with a long history. Glad this institution is still around. The perfect place to grab a beer with your comrades and drink a very strong Baltika béer. Classic, old school, time really has stood still here. Oh and there is a great vaudeville style bar with performances upstairs and a bathtub too.

  • Review 30 (2021-10-28 - Rating: 5)

Great bar. Next to New York theatre Workshop. Full of history. Staffs are super cool!

  • Review 31 (2017-08-13 - Rating: 4)

Great place to come for a literary reading. Convenient location. Good drinks. Eat before you arrive - no food served. Kitschy Soviet decor, wonderful ambience for a literary crowd.

  • Review 32 (2009-02-12 - Rating: 4)

I went there on a weeknight and it proved to be pretty quiet, nice bar, all full of red and communist propaganda which gives it a nice feel. I wish it would have been more rugged though, like really have a communist feel to it but what can you do? :-)Gets noisy when it becomes crowded though, so not really the place to go if you want a cozy quiet place like the good old communist block.

  • Review 33 (2019-06-09 - Rating: 5)

KGB Bar is an absolute gem. Its cozy, comfortable, dimly lit, somewhat hidden, and the walls are all decorated with Soviet era photos and posters. The staff is super friendly on top of it. Enter the doors under the neon sign, then follow the stairs up one flight above the Kraine Theater to find the bar on your right. Try a Baltika if youre going for the full experience!

  • Review 34 (2019-01-24 - Rating: 5)

A true hole in the wall like none other. Even had poetry reading the night I went. Dont tell anyone about this gem.

  • Review 35 (2014-05-15 - Rating: 4)

Pretty decent dive bar. Laid back vibe. Good music. Nothing to write home about but they do have loads of literature readings during the week. Large format (25oz) Baltika beers for $7. Could do worse really.

  • Review 36 (2018-08-19 - Rating: 4)

The live music here was really good. The atmosphere and decor was vintage and felt like it took me back in time. The drinks were slightly pricy but nothing too outrageous. The crowd was a younger college crowd which was positively surprising.

  • Review 37 (2015-03-15 - Rating: 5)

Great dive bar; only problem is everyone else already knows about it, additionally the comedy(?) place on the floor below attracts a lot of people who are waiting for their show ro start. $8 cocktails are the cheapest weve found and the crowd is pretty friendly, just dont plan on a table after 9. Stick with the house rail drinks, theyre pretty dern strong, the margarita Im drinking right now was literally 4/5 tequila & cointreau, 1/5 lime sour.

  • Review 38 (2024-05-06 - Rating: 5)

Great bar, amazing location and kind service. highly recommend,

  • Review 39 (2018-02-03 - Rating: 5)

Really great music (rock, trip-hop, post-punk) and unexpected atmosphere. Memories from 30s 40s and some other past decades can be perceived here. Part of the alternative culture in NYC

  • Review 40 (2019-11-09 - Rating: 5)

Such a nice place. On the top flor, you will find find the red room, with jazz gigs of all sorts. People laugh, meet, dance. It’s always different and it’s always fun.

  • Review 41 (2024-11-07 - Rating: 5)

    Always great music

  • Review 42 (2023-08-26 - Rating: 5)

Great place. Found it on a Monday night and the vibes were there, super friendly bartender - will deff be back.

  • Review 43 (2018-01-09 - Rating: 5)

Love the Atmosphere literary and film people the Bartenders are interesting smart nyers. Grate conversations get going late at night with strangers that end to be new friends.

  • Review 44 (2019-03-19 - Rating: 5)

Great Soviet themed hideaway bar on the second floor of a townhouse walk-up. You feel like youre drinking someplace clandestine, except that most locals have known about it for years.

  • Review 45 (2021-07-15 - Rating: 5)

I love it. The music is great, the drinks arent too expensive, and the bartenders and other customers are super cool.

  • Review 46 (2019-02-19 - Rating: 4)

Interesting vibe. There’s a communist flag and political memorabilia on the wall. The selection is small as is the bar! It’s on the second floor of a building (I believe it’s a theater downstairs). They have Baltika which is what I would describe as a Russian Heineken!

  • Review 47 (2019-02-04 - Rating: 4)

Very interesting place. When I asked the bartender what his well whisky was like he said “it’s not as bad as you would think it might be.” And it wasn’t.

  • Review 48 (2022-03-27 - Rating: 5)

Great bar tucked away upstairs with relics of the Soviet era and a selection of good spirits and beer selection. Prompt service in a quaint atmosphere with flags to show support for Ukraine in light of the invasion by Russia.

  • Review 49 (2017-10-31 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 52 (2022-02-13 - Rating: 4)

Lots to explore in this bar, conveniently in one of the best parts of New York City. They host fun, unique events like poetry nights and more worth checking out. Incredible history behind the making of the KGB Bar.The vibe is welcoming to all individuals, which I thoroughly appreciate.

  • Review 60 (2017-04-08 - Rating: 5)

What a cool spot, worth having a drink here for the experience. Not my regular spot but fun to bring people visiting NYC.

  • Review 61 (2023-11-06 - Rating: 4)

Happened upon this establishment on a night out with my college friend and my long term partner who has a squat PR related knee injury. The drinks and ambiance were fantastic but there were few available seats so my partner had to take a knee at the table we were sitting at. Enjoyed the environment and chats we had with interesting strangers.

Awesome atmosphere. Eclectic crowd. Awsome decor. Great location and fun

  • Review 63 (2020-02-06 - Rating: 4)

This bar is what I wanted NYC to be when I first moved here. It’s unaffected by sugar craving woo girls demanding minimalism, white walls, and and $20 salads.Instead - you get a deeply loved and lived-in historical landmark with ghosts still whispering from the red walls.

KGB Bar is a hidden gem in the city, offering a unique Soviet-themed atmosphere and a good selection of spirits and beer. The bar is filled with Soviet era items, books and art, which is entertaining. As others have said, its great to see that the bar has adapted to support Ukraine in light of the recent invasion by Russia, while still retaining a sense of history.

One of my favorite neighborhood watering holes. Its cozy and no frills and you definitely dont come here for the cocktails, but for the kitschy ambience and cozy beer-bar vibe. This spot gets randomly crowded at times as they host poetry readings and other events but call ahead or come in person and inquire, especially if youre on a date and youre into live jazz, and ask if upstairs is open. Youre welcome! If you bump into the owner of the bar at any time, ask him how they settled on the name and theme, its an awesome story.

But Idk how it is on the regular and its very small and the people who showed up after midnight were aittle young and shady. I wish to give it 4.5 stars bc it is cool with history.

A home away from home in the East Village. Cheap drinks, readings every night, dark & intimate. Theyve spiffed up the bathrooms lately, but its still a place where you get a sense of what the EV used to be like.

  • Review 108 (2018-02-15 - Rating: 4)

Its kind of legendary and I was there for a Live Magazine event with Jeff Wright. Had a great evening. Got drunk among the poets. No idea how much I spent, and I met some folks who identify as gender fluid for the first time, which was interesting. However, writing the phrase for the first time, fluid sounds a little messy and a little iffy when coupled with gender. Im only talking about the words, not the actions. Gender mobile sounds, well, safer.

Came here on Tuesday night really cool vibe, good music, and nice people. Drinks were fairly priced for New York. Bartender and bouncer were both good people.

Clean, comfortable, loungy space with attentive service.

  • Review 124 (2019-01-06 - Rating: 5)

Cheap drinks and cool decor. A rare uncrowded Manhattan bar!

  • Review 125 (2019-10-19 - Rating: 5)

Great bar for anyone looking for a Soviet Union aesthetic. Dimly and warmly lit. If you have trouble finding it, its on the second floor once you head up the stairs.

An old style Russian bar... No TV no other disturbances, get good Vodka and enjoy your night

  • Review 127 (2018-10-02 - Rating: 5)

I love this silly bar and the fact that you can get Russian beer in a bottle and hide up a dark stairwell. Seriously the best.

Great atmosphere! The bartender makes a mean Moscow Mule. The HWA hosts an annual reading series: Women in Horror Month at KGB Bar.

Nice place, cheap drinks. Comrade ☭

  • Review 130 (2019-07-09 - Rating: 4)

Nice bar and ambiance. Solid jazz and blues performances

  • Review 131 (2016-01-28 - Rating: 4)

Hidden on the 2nd floor of an apartment building on 4th street, KGB is laid back, has interesting decor. The bar is great for hanging out post dinner, the music is not super loud so you can actually have a good conversation. Not as packed as most of the other Lower East Side bars, which I like.

Awesome bar, good ambiance, good service, interesting artifacts. Overall a fun time.

Another excellent program 6 May 2019

  • Review 134 (2016-07-22 - Rating: 5)

I always have fun with the people. Love the atmosphere with a very eclectic style of music.

  • Review 135 (2011-12-07 - Rating: 4)

KGB is a mashed-up representation of the East Village overall, with literary readings and book launches happening one night, and eclectic ragers happening the next - which is to say you never quite know what youll get, but you know youll have fun, nevertheless. The staff here is great, and the atmosphere is vibrant, no clue about the food, though!

Really cool soviet-themed dive bar/speakeasy. Has various communist literary book/poetry readings which are always a good time

  • Review 138 (2017-01-17 - Rating: 4)

Where can you find a place called KGB bar in a place others than NY? Nowhere. Nice place with a cool vibe but a bit small.

  • Review 139 (2017-08-18 - Rating: 5)

This is my go-to chill bar. There is also a nice jazz club upstairs

  • Review 140 (2017-12-04 - Rating: 5)

The music was great and it complimented the wine we had in terms of its likeability.

  • Review 141 (2017-04-15 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 147 (2019-05-16 - Rating: 5)

Watched the infinite wrench show here. Loved the show, loved the people, loved the vibes.

  • Review 148 (2016-02-11 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 149 (2021-12-15 - Rating: 5)

Amazing! Fell in love with the bartender, but totally forgot to ask her name

  • Review 150 (2016-06-16 - Rating: 4)

I caught one of Salty Brines fantastic Wed night shows here. Really enjoyed the show and the room but the selection of beers at the bar is poor and the two drink minimum exacerbates that problem.

  • Review 151 (2017-09-06 - Rating: 4)

I was there on a ny eve a couple of years back as our plans suddenly changed, such a nice themed space, nice drinks, funny cheerful staff, all contributed to a wonderful night!

Old school East Village bar. Great vibe, great bartenders, great crowd.

  • Review 156 (2016-10-12 - Rating: 5)

Hidden gem in the EV. Not the best cocktails or beer selection but a chill place with a one of kind feel (rumor has it that it was the old Ukranian Workers People Party HQ/Clubhouse before becoming a public bar).

  • Review 157 (2022-09-04 - Rating: 4)

    Nice vibe. Pretty cheap
