Lalibela was my introduction to Ethiopian food and I can say that it is now my favorite! I have had Ethiopian in New York and DC and I always come back here because I think it is absolutely the best! The service is unmatched. Everyone is always super kind and professional. And the food is unparalleled! Highly recommend. -

Authentic, delicious food from Ethiopia. I loved it, everything is freshly made at the moment, thats why the service could take a little more that what we are used to wait elsewhere. This is because Lalibela is a real restaurant, with real amazing food.I will definitely come back for the Lalibela Special tibs, and I suggest you to go try them :) -

Nice Ethiopian. My first time having this cuisine in NYC!The decor is clean and minimal, but it works. This evening their was only one lady in the front managing all the tables. Being a Monday night not very busy. She was friendly and helpful explaining the menu and making recommendations. We ordered 2 appetisers and 3 mains between three of us. The portions are quite big and we landed up eating a lot as the food was delicious!!Would highly recommend this place… and will surely plan to visit again! -

Title: A Charming Taste of Ethiopia at Lalibela⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Nestled in Manhattan, Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant is a well-kept establishment, embodying an inviting and relaxed atmosphere. The interior is clean, neat, and elegantly presented, radiating a simple yet fitting charm with its tasteful Ethiopian decor. Accompanied by soothing, soft background music, it creates an ideal setting for a laid-back dining experience. The service at Lalibela is commendable. The staff members are courteous, attentive, and show an impressive understanding of the menu. They guide patrons efficiently, helping them make satisfying choices based on individual preferences and inquiries. The culinary journey started with the Tibs Sot beef meal, skillfully prepared by first searing the beef on a hot skillet, followed by slow-cooking in a savory berbere stew. The meal was served at an optimal temperature, preserving the freshness and flavor. The presentation was aesthetically pleasing, reflecting Lalibelas attention to detail.Paired with the main dish were two side dishes: Miser Alicha, made with split lentils, and Shiro, prepared with split peas. While these dishes could have used a touch more flavor, they were still adequately prepared, and the overall portion sizes were quite generous. The bread served was fresh and had the perfect consistency for an authentic Ethiopian hand-eating experience, enhancing the enjoyment of the meal.An appetizing beef Sambusa was the chosen starter. This pastry delight, filled with minced beef seasoned with jalapenos, garlic, and coriander, was served hot and crispy. An accompanying spicy sauce added an extra flavorful kick.Although I found the food to have a slightly Americanized touch, toning down the traditionally bold Ethiopian spices, it was still delightful. The subtlety of the spices might appeal more to those preferring a milder palette.Lalibela also features an on-site bar, catering to those who enjoy a drink alongside their meal. While I did not partake, the inclusion of this amenity undoubtedly broadens the restaurants appeal. My choice of beverage, a cold diet coke, was served well-chilled, complementing my dinner perfectly. The prices at Lalibela are reasonable, providing good value given the quality and quantity of food served. In conclusion, Lalibela is a must-visit for anyone seeking an Ethiopian dining experience in a calm setting. Even if the spices are not as robust as traditional Ethiopian cuisine, the overall experience — food, ambiance, service, and the added convenience of an on-site bar — justifies a five-star rating. Leaving Lalibela, I felt thoroughly satisfied and I am confident that future visitors will share the same sentiment. -

Review 8 (2023-05-15 - Rating: 5)
A great local Ethiopian restaurant that reopened during the pandemic. The kitfo and Doro wot are well seasoned with strong flavours. Injera is springy and fluffy perfect accompaniment. Veggies slow cooked and matches with the meat. Only downside is the local wine and bear a bit unfinished. Service was fast and friendly. -
Review 9 (2022-04-18 - Rating: 5)
Unpretentious restaurant with a quiet and relaxed vibe. The food was phenomenal. I had the vegetable Sambusa and the Kifto cooked medium rare. Perfectly spiced combination of flavors. Going back soon to try other items.Staff is very friendly. This is slow food cooked to order so be patient! -

Second time visiting here. It always fills my soul. It also happens to be a great place to teach an emerging or struggling reader - thank you to the wonderful service for helping a mom push that process along and teach me to slow down. My son and I had a delightful time ☺️. I was able to find street parking after picking up my son from school for our afternoon reading/snack/bonding time. -
Review 11 (2021-01-19 - Rating: 5)
First time eating Ethiopian food and Lalibela did not disappoint! I got the lamb cooked in wine and peppers and my husband ordered the veggie combo and it was soooo good. Everything was tasty and full of different flavors! Also as you can see the colors are wonderful, very appetizing. We have always wanted to try Ethiopian food and was honestly unsure what to expect, but this place was clean, staff were helpful and patient and will definitely be recommending friends to try them out! -
Review 12 (2024-02-20 - Rating: 5)
I have visited this family-run restaurant several times and it is my go to spot. I come to this restaurant over others because of its no-frills authenticity; the tsom (vegan) dishes are perfectly seasoned and the variety of tibs (beef or lamb, drier or saucier) are well made and flavorful. You cant go wrong with the doro wot or kitfo either. Also, one of the few spots I know of where you can ask and get is 100% teff enjera (but you got to ask). They also have my fav Habesha beer. If you want to know what Ethiopian food tastes like in Ethiopia, this is the spot to find out. -

We had to postpone our honeymoon to Africa due to COVID so we came here to cheer ourselves up. We had the BEST time! The owner was so helpful and gave us recommendations. This was our first time trying Ethiopian food and we were unsure of what to choose - he was so nice and took time to explain to us. We will definitely be going back. I had the beef stew with lentils and a few other veggies. Everything was delicious. Cozy and comfortable. -

Review 30 (2022-11-22 - Rating: 4)
My first time eating Ethiopian. Portions were small but since I had no idea how my stomach would respond, I didnt want to push it. Food was good, a little on the spicy side. Great service. We went on a Saturday afternoon, so only one other group in the restaurant. It didnt make me a fan of Ethiopian but I wouldnt mind going again if someone really wanted that cuisine. -
Review 31 (2022-12-06 - Rating: 5)
This place is a gem! Absolutely enjoyed the food, delicious and very filling. The service and staff is fantastic, our server had great recommendations and also explained the dishes as it was our first time having this cuisine. I would 100% recommend this to anyone and everyone, if you haven’t dined here yet, I highly recommend you to do so! I ordered the special tibs and my partner got the special kofti. The ambiance is very relaxing as well. Great spot for lunch! -

Review 33 (2021-03-19 - Rating: 5)
Fantastic experience! Fantastic food! Clean and spacious. Excellent customer service! We ordered the veggie platter and one of the lamb entrees with beets and lentils. It was delicious. Ive never had Ethiopian food before, so when I went in I let the guy know immediately and after my food was ready he identified all the different foods for me and showed me how to eat them. I just wish i lived closer. -
Review 34 (2023-01-03 - Rating: 5)
This is a wonderful family run Ethiopian restaurant. The food tastes authentic and the service is great, always with a smile. I gave them 5 stars despite the fact that the Injera didn’t taste fresh last time I was there. I am willing to forgive that just because they’re very kind and wonderful people. -
Review 35 (2024-09-23 - Rating: 5)

Incredibly authentic Ethiopian restaurant. It feels very warm-hearted and cultural. The vegan platter was delicious, I ate a platter for 2 by myself. This place is a GEM, a HOMERUN! A MUST when it comes to vegetarian/vegan cuisines. The service was great and they are very caring and kind. The world needs more places like lalibela -

The food was great and I really enjoyed talking with the kind lady who served us. The greens were my favorite. The coffee is fantastic, too. -
Review 41 (2023-12-27 - Rating: 4)
Overall Thoughts: Although the food was flavorful and delicious, I deducted one star because my friend and I both experienced some stomach pain the day after eating here for dinner. Hopefully it’s just a one-off thing!! Otherwise, the staff here were really sweet and friendly, and the interior felt cute and homey. The prices were reasonable for the quantity and were lower than most other Ethiopian restaurants in the UWS area.Food I tried:- Doro Wot with Gomen & Cabbage: It doesn’t look like a lot of food on first glance, but was very filling. The injera bread (each dish includes 2) was perfectly sour and was itself incredibly filling. The spices and flavors of the doro wot sauce were delicious and the chicken was tender; the meat fell right off the bone. The sides were small in quantity but tasted good.--Price (relative to peers): 4.4/5Food: 4.3/5Ambience: 4.6/5Service: 4.8/5Overall Value: 4.3/5 -
Review 42 (2023-01-10 - Rating: 5)

Review 51 (2024-10-21 - Rating: 4)
I dont want to ruin the rating of the restaurant so gave them 4 stars, but really this was more of a 2 for me.We had the vegetarian sampler which was less flavorful than other Ethiopian restaurants Ive gone to. On that alone I would say 3.5/4 stars. (Plus the side injera was cold which I was surprised by, normally its warm or room temp at least.)But the thing that really ruined the experience for me was that we ordered the vegetarian sambusas and when they came, we bit in and were suspicious that they might be beef. We called over a waitress to check and she said, If you ordered vegetarian, theyre vegetarian. So we ate a few more bites and then continued to be worried so we asked another waitress and she confirmed they were beef and took them away to replace them. Mistakes happen, fine, but they werent as apologetic as I think would be appropriate, and didnt even comp any of our meal. We were all pretty upset and I wish the customer service around the mistake had been better. -
Review 52 (2024-05-09 - Rating: 5)
Excellent, so good, will be back -
Review 53 (2023-02-21 - Rating: 5)
The food here is absolutely delicious. We had the special kitfo and the lali assa. Just the special kitfo was enough for two and I’d recommend ordering an extra veggie side if you need. Must try restaurant! -
Review 54 (2020-10-28 - Rating: 4)
I came here for dinner the other night with friends. Food was great! We got a meat sampler and a veggie sampler with some samusas. The reason I gave 4/5 stars is that they put the veggie and the meat on the same plate and my friends are vegetarian. I think next time they should ask being doing such as a lot of vegetarians cannot have meat on the same plate.Other note - bring a jacket! There are no heaters here for outdoor dining so it gets a bit cold for dinner.I’ll definitely be back! -
Review 55 (2021-07-27 - Rating: 4)
Really good! Ordered the vegetarian platter, and it was more than enough for 2 people, so turned out to be very affordable. Both indoor and outdoor dining options as of July when I visited. -
Review 56 (2021-06-18 - Rating: 5)

Food was amazing! Staff were friendly and knowledgeable on what to recommend, must try - only giving 4 stars because of decor but other than that, love this place! -
Review 75 (2021-07-21 - Rating: 5)
I am not a picky eater but I am very particular about the quality of the food I eat. Everything at Lalibela was extremely fresh and enjoyable starting with the Tomato Avocado Salad and culminating with the Cabbage. The pastry of the Sambusa was perfectly flaky and not greasy or oily in the least; every bite was a perfect combination of flaky pastry and deliciously seasoned meat. The lamb in the Lalibela Special Tibs was cooked to perfection. What also made this experience enjoyable is the atmosphere… this is an unpretentious family owned / neighborhood restaurant and you immediately get that welcoming feeling as you walk in. The staff is lovely, accommodating, and very happy to provide recommendations. I will definitely be back and I highly recommend you give Lalibela a try. -

Review 80 (2022-06-19 - Rating: 5)
Authentic Ethiopian cuisine with an extremely friendly and helpful staff. The ambiance is stark and open which gives the restaurant a clean and light atmosphere. The vegetable sambusa was served with a hot green sauce that was super spicy and delicious. My family shares the vegetable combo which is plenty of food for 2 adults and 2 kids with a variety of flavors. Highly recommended spot that I will definitely go back to. There is a full bar and outdoor seating as well. -

I think food is great at this place however the service is not great and they have some funky policies like charging $7 to share food between people even though it’s the same portion? Odd and the original waiter we had didn’t really answer questions just said ok which was not that helpful. All in all good food just prepare to be patient and pay extra to share food. -

Wow! What an incredible family-owned restaurant. We ate family style with 7 people and ordered the Kitfo, samosas, awaze tibs, and the doro tibs and all left full and even had food left over! Great atmosphere and phenomenal place for gluten-free and vegetarian options. -
