Lively old school pub with traditional British and American food. Its typically pretty crowded in the bar area, but I was able to get a table on two separate occasions during week of Xmas. They go all out on Xmas decorations. Service can be a little slow, due to how busy they are, but everyone is friendly and the food is very good.Definitely worth stopping in for a quick drink/bite, especially if youre staying at the W hotel nearby -

I had the blackened Ahi Tuna which was outstanding. My husband had the Pesto Gnocchi which was also outstanding. Very friendly staff had a great dinner. Wanted to try desert but was too full. I recommend eating here. Plus the history of this place is awesome. O Henry and the gift of the Magi, great story. -

Walk into Petes Tavern and you cant help but get the feeling of an historical event happening before your eyes. Well it did for me... the cozy, rustic ornate decor is a real and welcoming atmosphere as are the greeters and servers who work here. We were even fortunate to meet Pete the owner (not his real name) and share a few memories when he dropped off a couple beers to our table.Petes Tavern is a pleasant blast from the past and we were so glad to have lunch here! The menu is full of Irish specialties, like shepherds pie, chicken pot pie, fish and chips, etc. The tavern ale was smooth and refreshing, the perfect pairing for our lunch. Lots of others on tap including wines and spirits ( see pics ). Keep in mind this is a bar first and restaurant second. Looking back on our selections although they were good I feel a handheld or burger would have been the better choice. Even though all our picks were very good on their own, however, together since we shared everything they didnt complement each other. ( Hence one less star for the limited lunch menu and our fault for the selections) But, with that said, the gnocchi (cooked well) with spinach pesto was a pleasant surprise, nice flavor, served hot, and something we would recommend, as we would the zucchini chips too and onion rings, both very good. -

We stopped in to see where O. Henry hung out so many years ago. Legend has it that he wrote his short story “The Gift of the Magi” in the second booth. They have many framed pieces to honor the famous author. Our bartender, Juan, was very friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed the whole experience! -

I enjoyed catching up with a friend over Caesar Salad with some delicious grilled chicken.Service was quick, friendly, and professional. Thank you.Atmosphere was a classic old tavern vibe. Well worth a visit. Not crowded at lunch on Tuesday. -

This is one of my favorite spots in NYC. You can feel the history as you sit down to an excellent meal. The food is truly delicious, and the cocktails are spot on. 👌 our server Eddie was fantastic. He made excellent recommendations and was a real professional! I will continue to return to this special establishment for many years to come. -

5 Stars all around. We had a large party reservation this past weekend while in town to celebrate Thanksgiving. Gary was extremely responsive in helping with the reservation during their busiest time of the year. Pictures don’t do the Christmas decor justice, the food was stellar all around, and the overall mix of locals and tourists made for a fun and lively atmosphere. The cherry on top was our server Ernest, who made our visit extra special and treated our crazy crew like family. We cannot wait to return next time we’re in NYC. -

Pete’s was as good as ever yesterday. Amazing food, great service, and incredible atmosphere—so much history at Pete’s. Gary is the best—thank you for reserving us the infamous O’Henry’s booth! We recommend Pete’s to all of our friends traveling to Manhattan from Arizona, and it’s a must stop for us when we are there. -

I’ve been visiting Pete’s Tavern on and off for 10+ years now. I even lived just down the street on 18th and 1st for a bit and visited even more frequently at that time. So, it is safe to say, this review comes with a nostalgia bias.I’m surprised I hadn’t left a review before but maybe it was on an old account or something. Regardless, here are some details from my most recent visit in 2024.We started with a glass of the house ale! It tastes lighter than it looks. I’m not a fan of dark heavy beers so this hit the spot for me.On this particular visit we skipped the appetizers, however, I’ve had their Baked Truffle Mac & Cheese and Homemade Veal Meatballs fairly recently and enjoyed them! For dinner, our group had the Gnocchi Spinach Pesto, Chicken Parmigiana, and Three BBQ Brisket Sliders. All were great! Gnocchi was great for any vegetarians in your group. The Chicken Parm was a big dish and I probably should have had leftovers but I was starving.Lastly, I love the updated bathrooms! Although I appreciate the older bar bathrooms sometimes, it was nice to have an easy and clean bathroom experience.I hope you enjoy as much as I do should you visit! -

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Pete’s Tavern and Gary, the manager. My partner and I and two dear friends from London met for a long overdue reunion recently, and we had a truly wonderful time at Pete’s.Every single one in our small party of four thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. And my friends said that the porterhouse for two was the Best steak they ever had. I had the NY strip, which was an excellent cut of meat cooked to perfection. And my partner had the eggplant parmigiana, which she said was some of the best she’s had.If I haven’t already raved enough, I really must rave about our very lovely server Jenna. She was hands down outstanding! She kept the mood at the table light, fun, and we sure laughed a lot that evening. And she was a really good sport because we teased her often throughout the evening. Jenna was a really fun person to share the evening with. She thoroughly enhanced the atmosphere and conversation.Lastly, I am a longtime fan of Pete’s Tavern. And I am a Huge fan! I’ve been coming here since 1996 and fell in love with the tavern way back then. My partner and I love this establishment so much that we’ve spent several very special anniversaries there and Pete’s always surpassed expectations. Further, the bar and dining rooms are very beautiful, so it’s a really pleasant ambiance. Also, Gary, the manager is an absolute pleasure to work with. I can’t say enough about him or this venue. -

Didnt eat here but the menu looks amazing, and the food for other customers looked great! We only stopped by for a drink or two, accidentally stumbling across it, its a beautiful oldie worldie pub just outside of the manic city center and very walkable.Old dark wood, staff were incredible and attentive even for just drinks, very smart in appearance and the general atmosphere is lovely and calm.Wish Id have come here more than once more so to check out the restaurant out the back, its such a beautiful bar and would recommend anyone close by visiting.Great experience.Take care. The British guy. -

Although I haven’t lived in NY for many years we have great memories of Pete’s and are happy we have some of the Old Guard still remaining! My husband and I visit once, maybe twice, a year from London and Juan always greets us in remembrance and with old school NY charm and hospitality! Hope to get back at Christmas when you are all in top spirits! -

Review 19 (2023-04-08 - Rating: 5)
I went for a birthday dinner and have to say it was a great experience. At first glance, the place does look like a bar but once you emerge through that into the back there’s a really nice dining area. My friend told me they are known for their cheeseburger so I ordered that and it was delicious. 10/10 recommend the cheeseburger I haven’t had one that good in years. Other than that service was pretty great and the guy was nice and accommodating for our large group. It was a birthday and they did make us pay for the cake and ice cream, which unfortunately seems to be a thing now at restaurants. Not a fan. Other than that, the food was delicious and if you’re going for drinks after it’s a great place to eat and then immediately head to bar. Great ambiance as well. -

One of the oldest bars in New York I had the pot pie that was very good, this time the fish and chips were not up to usual standard. The interior is great for the evening and lots of outdoor seating for the day -

Review 26 (2024-12-27 - Rating: 4)
Food was so-so. Burgers and steaks were over cooked, albeit only slightly. Chicken Parm was good, as was the chicken pot pie, which could have been seasoned a little more. Drinks, especially the Negroni, was very good. -

Petes is a very fun & lively place. We chose to sit outside in the shade. I did peak inside, great atmosphere, lots of dark wood & dim lighting and very historic. Food was great & reasonably priced. My only negative is they couldnt provide separate checks for our party of 6. -
Review 30 (2023-12-05 - Rating: 5)
Came to enjoy a couple drinks and the atmosphere. They have great decorations for the holidays and it really put me in the xmas spirit. We came on thanksgiving eve and it was slightly crowded but not difficult to get a drink. I definitely prefer it over the other holiday themed bars. It was a fun time and will definitely be returning! -
Review 31 (2024-03-04 - Rating: 5)
Always have liked Pete’s Tavern. I have held two events upstairs and enjoyed brunch and dinner on special occasions on the main level. My favorite time of year there is Christmas where the wall to wall occupants and awesome decor create an atmosphere of joy and inclusion. The service is always great and one can be made to feel special on their special day.Going to Pete’s is not just going somewhere for a quick bite, it is an imersion into history.Thank you for always making my visit special!BTW steak nights are not only a bargain but delicious as well. The chicken pot pie flakey and dense. The drinks are worth every cent.Summers outside are amazing but booths inside are so comfortable. Is Booth 3 haunted? Only you will know for sure.Tell O’Henry I said hi!Enjoy! Marilyn -
Review 32 (2023-04-14 - Rating: 4)
Cool looking bar that claims to be the oldest one. We popped in for a cocktail after work and the place was busy inside and out so there were no tables available however the bar staff took our orders and served us immediately. The decor inside was interesting and really added to those old school bar vibes. While I didn’t try any of the food, the Old Fashioned I had tasted strong and delicious so overall a good bar in the area. -
Review 33 (2024-09-21 - Rating: 4)
Overall the food was great but I was disappointed in the vegan option that was available. I book my reservation online and the FAQ said they offered several vegan options including the salads and beyond burger. Even when I booked I noted that we had some vegan attendees in our party. It was still a surprise for them. Their only vegan options were salads and a beyond burger. I would say that doesnt really count as vegan options as you have to make sure you say dont include cheese and some dressings are not veganThey really should update that on their website as it is deceiving.Everything else was great for the rest of us that werent vegan. We enjoyed our food and drinks. -
Review 34 (2024-10-16 - Rating: 4)
Great service and made an effort to accommodate our group of seven. The food was delicious. My only complaint was the crowd and the noise indoors so we decided to eat outside. Overall a wonderful experience. -
Review 35 (2024-12-11 - Rating: 5)
Hopping place with great pub food and excellent service. Great old New York vibe in a chic neighborhood. Would definitely go back even though the bar scene was off the charts busy. -

Review 37 (2018-11-05 - Rating: 4)
Pretty good place! I had the linguine bolognese and although it wasn’t spectacular, it got the job done. The pasta was cooked well, but the sauce was very light, so the dish wasn’t very flavorful. The fried calamari was also good, but it wasn’t anything special either. I had a side of mashed potatoes, and they were tasty, but I have a feeling they weren’t very fresh. I did happen to really like the ocean themed dish that my meal came in, though! I thought that the dynamic of the place was a little strange; there was a bar space with a few surrounding tables, as well as a dining room. This definitely isn’t unusual in the city, but it felt a bit too cramped for this to be happening. Overall, it was a good dinner, but don’t expect outstanding things from here. Oh, it is the oldest bar in continuous operation in NYC, which I thought was a pretty cool thing. -

Review 39 (2023-01-29 - Rating: 5)
As a New York City native, saying this is my favorite restaurant means a LOT. My family has been coming here since my parents moved to America in 1989, and its still as welcoming as ever (even though the prices have risen over the years). The service is prompt and respectful, and the place is clean. As the bar is separate from the dining room, its possible to have a meal without worrying about any usual pub shenanigans even tho the bar is usually orderly anyway, albeit sometimes very crowded. Theres an additional back room for reservations, or when the place is nearing capacity. There are pictures throughout the dining rooms and in the hallway before the bathrooms of notable figures whove been to the establishment, so its great for film fans and tourists! Theres also enclosed outdoor dining, however I havent eaten there myself. My only complaint regarding the structure of Petes would be the inaccessibility of the bathroom for people with disabilities, as its down a set of tiny stairs. The bathrooms themselves are also small, only two stalls and in a generally small room.Lunch and dinner here is SCRUMPTIOUS! You can order essentially anything here and be delighted with your meal!!! Dishes are made from quality ingredients and cooked in your preferred fashion. The OHenry steak is a great choice to share between two-three people. Theres also a house special beer!Petes is great for celebrations, and for giving a tourist a digestible experience of the local New York life. -
Review 40 (2022-12-31 - Rating: 4)
Great local tavern with interesting history. Holiday decorations were beautiful and food was tasty. Chicken pot pie was creamy and rich, tender chicken and beautifully crispy pastry top. Shepherds Pie was tasty but a little dry. If I wasn’t tasting it at the same time I was tasting the creamy pot pie I might not have thought it was dry. Petes IPA was very good. They also have a Petes ale but didn’t try that one. If you go definitively walk through the entire restaurant to see the photos on the wall and the old booths. -
Review 41 (2024-09-21 - Rating: 4)
Old Fashion & nagroni are perfect. They pride themselves on their burgers but medium was well done. Onion rings were a tiny sample and famous sauce only a light hardly detectable smear on one side of the bun. -
Review 42 (2022-01-15 - Rating: 5)
Good music and friendly staffs. The bar/restaurant has an awesome Christmas/holiday light decoration. I and my gf went on Wed and went in without a line. Plus we got a good space to dance with good musicThe drink is reasonableGotta try the foods next date night -
Review 43 (2022-10-03 - Rating: 4)
One of the oldest taverns in Manhattan, though like others it claims top status. The tavern is notable for its frequent visits by author O. Henry, a fact which is proudly displayed on the awnings. We had a few beers standing at the bar. A very young and lively crowd on a Saturday evening. Friendly people. Beautifully appointed interior with a gorgeous bar facade. Would definitely recommend if you are a history buff exploring New York City. -

Exceptional tavern with the one and only authentic old New York, feel. the food is excellent, the atmosphere left me in aww thinking about the rich history of Petes. The Fish N Chips and the burger were outstanding. -
Review 46 (2022-09-04 - Rating: 5)
Theres a lot of open seats outside the restaurant, so we were able to bring our dog in to eat alongside us!Tables were clean and the staff were very friendly to our pup even if she did bark at them sometimes... (sorry waiters!) They were also kind enough to give her a water bowl, since it was a little warm outside. 🐕My pup recommends the calamari and the steak if you ever want to eat here! Will definitely go again in the future :) -

Big YES to Petes Tavern. Just left this venue for a holiday get together with my girls, and its so beautiful! The decorations, the music, so much variety on the menu. The pastas were delicious and so were the drinks! Staff was excellent, it was busy but everyone was in a great mood. I loved the energy here. Definitely top service, everyone is loving my photos from here. So glad Petes is around to give the holiday cheer, i will be back for sure! -

My wife and I were in NYC for the first time over New Years and stumbled upon this absolute gem on New Year’s Eve. What an amazing restaurant and bar. So much history, great environment, incredible food and drinks, and a dedicated and fun staff. We loved Pete’s so much we went back a few days later for my wife’s birthday. To top it off, once we returned home I saw on their website that they were selling the “Snowy Day At Pete’s” painting by a local artist. I contacted their general manager, Steve, who was so extraordinarily helpful in shipping this to me, which I will give to my wife on Valentine’s Day. We will be returning to NYC, and we will definitely be back at Pete’s. Wish we had a Pete’s at home! -

My husband and I dined in Pete’s Tavern last night. This is our favorite restaurant to go during the holiday season and it’s become a yearly tradition for us. We both ordered the Steak Frites and it was outstanding! The beautiful Christmas decorations really put you in the holiday spirit. Petes Tavern is the best! -

I stopped by in December and it was super crowded in the bar area. However, we were seated in the dinning area pretty quick. I had the grilled ahi, which was a little dry. Overall, it was a magical experience because of all the holiday decorations. -

We were here yesterday after we had our friends birthday brunch in Tribeca. Basically, the birthday boy is a big history buff and have always loved Petes Tavern. Sold us on the whole Christmasy vibe as well so we went around 4PM and the place was packed, on a Sunday and one of the coldest days this season so far, must mean its pretty good.Since it was super packed, we had to be seated at like the third/back room and because we needed a long table for our group. I think we were there for almost 5 hours before we moved somewhere for dinner. Overall, great music, lots of celebrity and famous peoples pics all over as decor, youre there for the history. The drinks were overflowing and was just okay. Prices were standard downtown $15 average. Again, youre there for the history. And we were there as a group of friends who love each others company so that adds up to the experience. Sam attended to us and she was cool. The only gripe I had is some parts of the place smelled really awful especially as you walk down the stairs to the rest rooms. They should really fix that. -
Review 61 (2017-05-11 - Rating: 5)
This old school tavern has a great environment and food. The burgers are good, the Chicken or Veal Parmesan is excellent and the portions are generous for the price. If you are lucky enough to go a day when they are serving the fresh focaccia bread, its a must try. -

It felt like a movie scene. The place was mobbed on a Saturday evening, but we managed to still get a table and great service even without a reservation.I had their famous burger and beer. This is a NYC must-see! OLDEST TAVERN -
Review 67 (2024-06-23 - Rating: 4)
Food is fine. A few observations: the porterhouse steak says its for 2 people but its really not. Its for one person. It IS very good. Same for the desserts: for one person, NOT for two and also quite good. The salmon is good. The bad: steak frites was not good. The steak was chewy and tasteless. -

Review 72 (2023-01-13 - Rating: 5)
Lower east side classic. I grew up on 19th street a couple blocks from Petes. It was a favorite place that my parents would go to in the 1960s and it has seemingly only gotten better with more time. It has been here on 18th street since 1864.Petes is one of the oldest original bars in NYC. As a matter of fact it is probably the longest continuously running bar establishment overall. My mom was a big deal in NYC during the height of the Madison Avenue golden age of the advertising era (think Mad Men) and she would also take me to PJ Clarkes. PJs has fallen into neglect and disrepair, a shadow of its former glory. Sad but is what it is. This review is about Petes which has used its age and charm to warm visitors and locals alike.I have not eaten here in years and not reviewing the foods this trip. We were walking through the neighborhood and decided to stop in for a couple drinks and to warm-up a bit. The holiday trimmings were still up which added an amazing warmth and welcoming feel to the place. If you can get here before they take the decorations down do, otherwise come back next year I am sure you will be welcomed as we were.Decent bourbon selection, whiskeys and ryes a bit less. They do have a great drink menu and some good beers on draft. The pours are solid, value is pretty good, and it was great to see a mixed crowd of ages at the bar and at the tables near the bar. Bar food menu looked typical of what you might expect at a bar like Petes. There is also a tablecloth dining room in the back that is well separated from the bar area and has its own unique feel.Petes is a class act tavern with well kept fixtures, a sense of whimsy, and the original woodwork is well cared for. Clearly there is pride in ownership and folks that work here care about what Petes is; a great neighborhood place that welcomes everyone. I hope I can come back when I am 120 :). -

Been coming to this place for 7 years. First time back since Covid. Food is amazing. Service is amazing. The ambiance is also as “old school NY” you will find in the area. Gramercy Park is a great area, but not many gems like this around.Had the pleasure of meeting Juan and the rest of the team at the bar. Best service I could ask for from a new crew. Thank you.PS. That may be the reason they are the oldest pub in the city. And the Bourbon/Scotch/Whiskey list is proper… -

We visited on Christmas Adam and were looking for a place with some Christmas ambiance. We were not disappointed. They had lights on the ceiling and Christmas displays around the location. One of the oldest taverns in NY, allegedly O’Henry wrote “The Gift Of The Magi” in one of the booths inside. We did not have a reservation but were seated pretty quickly. The server told us they are known for their burgers. We all tried one. I considered it one of the best I have had overall. -

I have to admit of all the times Ive been to New York. I finally realized that if you want good food and a good place to eat, you got to get away from times square. Wife and I went up for the weekend with our son to have a nice little Christmas getaway and shop and eat. The restaurant we wanted to eat at was completely booked so we walked on over to Petes. They were absolutely packed, thought we wouldnt be able to get in but when we spoke to the host, they looked at their computer. Said follow me, took us upstairs to a very quiet. Very nice. Almost private room that had a couple other people eating dinner. The atmosphere was awesome, obviously being a week before Christmas, the place was decked out with all kinds of lights and ornaments and decorations and just really, really in the spirit of the holidays. I had the Petes burger which was a very tasty burger. And the fried mozzarella was out of this world. Great people, very nice, and good food. -

Apparently Pete’s Tavern is one of the oldest taverns in NYC. They really decorate the tavern for Christmas! Absolutely beautiful! The food was delicious, our favorite was the Fish & Chips. Our drinks were the Old Fashion, and the Mulled Wine. It is very busy, if you can get in it’s worth going! -

Opened in 1864, Pete’s Tavern is a NYC landmark. Conveniently located in Union Square, Pete’s consistently serves delicious food and drinks in a very cozy setting. During the holiday season, Pete’s goes over the top with decorations and it’s amazing. Enjoy this staple in Manhattan with family and friends and significant others. You’ll leave pleasantly pleased! -

My girlfriend and I were wandering around the neighborhood and decided to look for a place to grab dinner. From the outside, Pete’s looked like a nice cozy neighborhood spot, so we decided to check it out. Little did we know this was one of the oldest bars in New York and a local favorite. The meat lasagna was some of the best that I’ve had. Homemade and delicious. I would absolutely recommend it.The chicken parm was wonderful as well, albeit a little on the plain side. Their sauce was fresh and delicious but it seemed like it was just missing a little something. That said, I would absolutely go back and I would get that if I were in the mood for chicken parm. But I’m not sure I could go back without getting that lasagna.Their homemade egg nog was delicious as well. -

I was a regular at Petes in the 1980s. A young family and a move to the suburbs turned me into a less frequent but loyal visitor for decades. A move to North Carolina and the pandemic had me away for five years. But, I returned again in 2023 and the magic of Petes was truly the same as it ever was. Every employee seems to understand their role in making Petes feel like home to every guest. Congratulations on your continuing success. -

This was my second time going to this restaurant and it was a great experience and even now. I love the way that all of my team was greeted by all the servers and they gave us enough time to go through the menu and place the order. They listened to our special request and started bringing the food pretty quickly. I had Classic Nachos and Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Fries and I just loved it. I would highly recommend this place if you are around the area. -

We had a small celebration (12 of us) at Petes on July 10th - and everything was excellent. Everyone ordered a la carte and all agreed that the food was really good. The staff were terrific and very attentive to the various food and rink options that you can expect from 12 New Yorkers. We chose Petes as we used to work just a little further along Irving Place. The atmosphere and nostalgia is unbeatable.Thank you Petes Tavern! -

I love this place so much that I would have my wedding reception here. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in all of NYC. I try to come at least once a week. The chicken pot pie- simply amazing, as well as the Shepards pie, chicken wings, burger, and chocolate lava cake. The quality of ingredients and cooking is truly admirable. -
Review 118 (2022-12-19 - Rating: 5)
Walking up to this place I knew there was something more to it, but I didnt know what to expect when I arrived there. I thought it was just a regular bar claiming to be around for many years, but it turned out to be much more than just a bar. There is an actual restaurant experience inside with some very delicious food. If you enter inside youll find many pictures of famous celebrities that have visited the establishment throughout all the years.I went during Christmas time so it was very packed and busy but it just contributed to the holiday cheer. During the holidays they hang nothing but red Christmas lights on the ceiling so it gives off this red glow inside the bar, very cool. If you were to order pasta here I would encourage you to get the penne a la vodka, probably the best pasta dish I got to try there, I would 100% go back for it. Im not a big drinker, but I ended up ordering their Irish Coffee which resulted in being delicious since it had some bourbon and whipped cream followed by a hot toddy. Thanks for the service, I hope to see you all soon. -

Great local watering hole for relaxing after work or for a lunch. Love the old school charm as it feels like youve stepped back into the 1800s. One of the oldest bars in the city. I like sitting in the front area either at the bar or one of the side tables as you feel all the history. My go to item here is the burger. Wonderfully cooked medium bacon cheeseburger with any type of topping. Go for the mushrooms with provolone. Juicy and huge portions. Opt for the onion rings as well as they are large fried up well and has a great onion strip inside. The fries here are my favorite type as well. Steak fries, large cut and fried up perfectly. Great selection of bars on tap and ample room to chill out. Wonderful service from the wait staff and bartenders as well. -

Went for a drink after a concert at Irving Plaza and I was so pleasantly surprised to find a place with so much history. This is the oldest operating bar in NYC. It has been around since 1864 and O. Henry wrote The Gift of the Magi in one of the booths here(he also mentions it in one of his short stories). They have all the normal stuff that you would expect, but they also have their own beer which is decent and cheaper than all the others. There is a back room that is quieter and looks like a nice place for a meal or a date night. -
Review 158 (2019-12-29 - Rating: 5)
Very impressed with this place. There’s a mystique to the atmosphere but it’s it totally unpretentious. Had the salmon for entree and and calamari shrimp appetizer. Great portions sizes. Good taste. Celebrated a 30th Birthday. Went to visit because of the writer O. Henry making the place famous. He is said to have written his short story, Gift of the Magi here. Good vibes. Highly recommended for the good service. -
