They have the best beer in the world here! had a summer Ale from Transmitter, a local brewery across the East River and a great example of the American craft beer movement. The bartender deserves a 50 star rating! Whoever said the she was “xenophobic against Americans,” clearly had no idea what this great nation is really about. Her keen knowledge of the produce of our nation’s brewers and her communication of the craft of brewing, truly represents the independent spirit of our nation’s founders. Washington, Hamilton, Franklin and rest would be proud and happy to be served a pint here!

For a beer store, its a pretty good bar. As just a beer store specializing in harder to find craft beer, and good ones at that, it deserves a high rating. Add in a bar with about a dozen good beers on tap, including a nitro line, and its a great place to try some new brews. The staff is very knowledgeable about the beer both on tap and in bottles through the store. There is most definitely a style to suit any taste here.

I love this bar! It’s a great intimate spot inside the market with an amazing beer section and even their wine is quite good. The bar tender is really helpful she always seems very knowledgeable and recommends something I end up loving to try each time I’ve been. She’s really cultivated a great community there. The music from the record store across the way is always excellent too. Highly recommend stopping by!

Over the last few months I’ve really grown to love coming here. Beer really isn’t my thing, but the Australian bartender there really helped me find what works for me as a non-beer drinker and has helped me find my palette. I now come back several times a month just to chit chat and have some laughs as I try to branch out into more “adventurous” beer selections with her guidance

11/23/2024: Still stop by every chance I get! Look forward to beer, catching up and winding down every chance I get!Been coming here since the opening of the brick and mortar at Orchard Stree(always in my heart!), and stayed a customer even at the move in Essex Market. Lauren is the best, knows my palette from my requests and could even tell me what my taste profile is! I live in Queens and work in City Hall area and always pass through whenever Lauren is working, my outpost in Manhattan!

Stopped in to the Essex Market today after a long (ish) walk from Tribeca. Greeted by a rather impressive collection of craft beers, I sat down and asked the bartender, I think her name was Lauren what hazys she had on top. She responded with an unexpected yet very welcomed astuteness of beer knowledge, which led to more conversation. As a craft beer lover, this was perhaps the most pleasant part of a weeklong journey through NYC. I’m from the west coast and she knew so much about even beers there plus filled me in on so many upcoming brewers and beers on the east coast, and helped guide me in my quest to find a coveted Treehouse beer which still eludes eludes me :) Prost, Cheers and Salute to Top Hops and especially Lauren who made the experience review worthy. 🍻

  • Review 7 (2018-12-08 - Rating: 5)

This place is a beer (and cider) lovers paradise. A mashup of a bar and a convenience store, or bodega if youre a New Yorker. If you cant find what you want on tap, its likely in the back. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. You can even purchase beer to go. Highly recommended it.

  • Review 8 (2018-08-31 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic tap selection, even better bottle/can selection. Knowledgeable staff and nice atmosphere

  • Review 9 (2019-01-01 - Rating: 5)

Great beers and knowledgeable staff. They gave great recommendations.

  • Review 10 (2024-09-06 - Rating: 5)

Came in to Essex Market while visiting my son, a long time New Yorker. We stopped for a rest and a beverage. The bartender was absolutely a delight (Lauren). She happens to be from Australia but made me feel comfortable, at home, and delighted with the experience.

  • Review 11 (2024-04-10 - Rating: 5)

I was there when they were in orchard street and it was really nice, they have a good craft ales offer and the staff was pretty kind. I really felt comfortable there

  • Review 12 (2017-03-16 - Rating: 5)

Im officially in love with craft beer. Two years ago I would walk in and right out of a bar that didnt serve wine or liquor. Now look at me. Anything is possible. The BF & I have been to almost every craft beer bar in Manhattan and I have to say Top Hops is my favorite. The location is more spacious than most beer shoppes and the people who run it are great. The tap menu is constantly rotating and we can almost always find something we like to drink. Better yet, they have a large and beautiful selection of bottled & canned beers that can keep you entertained for a while. One of the only beer bars in Manhattan that will allow you to drink the bottled/canned beers from the shoppe section for just a $2 or $3 cap fee! They even have a nice selection of snacks to purchase and better yet.. complimentary & somewhat unlimited sourdough pretzels! Top Hops is awesome and highly recommended for any beer lovers out there!

  • Review 13 (2024-08-30 - Rating: 5)

This is the perfect place to sit and have a beer while shopping in the market. The bartender is quite knowledgeable about all their offerings--lagers, ipas, stouts, sours, ciders, even wine—and can suggest exactly what youre craving. While its placed among food stalls and other shops in the large market space, it feels like your local joint; friendly and neighborly.

  • Review 14 (2023-01-25 - Rating: 4)

Didn’t really feel welcome here after visiting twice. Decent, though unrefridgerated, can selection.

  • Review 15 (2019-03-24 - Rating: 5)

Great spot. Slick blend of bar and retail.

  • Review 16 (2019-03-09 - Rating: 4)

Great selection of beer. Can get pretty busy. I really like that you can choose to order draft beer or choose to pick up your own in the fridge in the back (adds $3 to the price if you want to drink it there). We were quite early and got a small table on a friday night but it fills up very quick. When we left a lot of people had to stand up.

  • Review 17 (2019-09-07 - Rating: 5)

An amazing selection of beer, Ive learned so much about which styles I prefer. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. There is a bottle opening fee if you want to have one of their 600+ bottles at the bar. They also have a great rotating selection on tap.

  • Review 18 (2018-02-08 - Rating: 5)

Always a great time. The selection is superb. Bottles cans draft. Fresh Nugget ty ty can. New Barrier on tap. ✔

  • Review 19 (2013-07-18 - Rating: 5)

Top Hops is really a quality place to hang out, drink, and shop. As a recent transplant (and even more recent beer drinker) to the area, I was a little taken aback at all of the options, but was quickly helped out by the knowledgeable staff. The store is super cool and full of every beer under the sun. Not only can you shop around, but they have a large selection of beer on tap, TVs playing, and some great people hanging out. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a cool place on a hot summer day.

  • Review 20 (2017-10-06 - Rating: 4)

I love Top Hops! The best feature, in my opinion, is the fact that they sell packed goods but, for a small fee, you can drink your beers right there in the shop. They also have great beers on tap. My only gripe is that there is always a shortage of chairs and service is a little slow, although everyone who works there is really sweet.

  • Review 21 (2021-03-19 - Rating: 5)

I Love Sullivans Irish Red Ale. Im a Irish Beer 🍺Lover. Your Pub just blew my mind, the quality and magnificent taste 👌of your very best Original Beers 🍻. 10 Stars in my Opinion. Move over Guinness.

  • Review 22 (2024-09-06 - Rating: 5)

The aussie bartender really serves an american flare with her incredible knowledge of beer! 10/10 would recommend.

  • Review 23 (2017-05-02 - Rating: 5)

Incredible selection of bottles, cans, and drafts, fair prices, an attractive space, and helpful staff – perfect beer store/bar!When I need a rare beer or unusual style (craft Mexican lager?), this is my go-to – there’s always something interesting in the fridge and on tap.

  • Review 24 (2018-07-20 - Rating: 5)

Great craft beer bar that always a stellar selection of rotating draughts. They even post the dates of when each line was cleaned. As the name implies, there are two walls of refrigerators with cans and bottles, organized by state/region, you can purchase to go. If youre near the LES and you love good beer, make sure to check out Top Hops.

  • Review 25 (2013-03-30 - Rating: 4)

Top Hops is a beer shop and bar that hosts a dizzying array of different beers from all around the world, from Belgian saison brews to Brooklyn stouts. With a regular rotation of around 20 keg beers on tap and a dozen fully loaded bottle fridges the only problem is going to be what to choose. There is limited seating at the bar and a few tables to perch at while you sup and it can get pretty crowded at weekends but once you have your seat, why would you want to move?Draft beers are served in different sizes according to their strength and growlers can be filled for later consumption. Prices are around $6 per beer, again depending on the strength. Food options are limited to bar snack type food and I think some sort of sandwich or burger option exists but really Ive only ever been there for the beer and I love it.

  • Review 26 (2018-10-10 - Rating: 5)

Have been twice. First time to drink, bartenders were super helpful and friendly, lots of good taps to try. Second time was buying bottles, everyone working there checked in to make sure I had everything I need, and bottle selection is great.

  • Review 27 (2019-08-17 - Rating: 5)

A great place to kick back and enjoy NYCs best selection of craft beers on tap. Had a chance to stop in for a few on a recent business trip to NYC. My favorite out of all of them was Lunch from the Maine beer company. Growlers to go as well.

  • Review 28 (2019-03-18 - Rating: 5)

I used to visit here as a regular craft beer drinker but here tonight because Top Hops is committing to having nonalcoholic craft beer on tap. Ted and his wife are passionate and gracious hosts and out ahead of the pack with NA craft in the US. The same great selection and service as always! Will return often.

  • Review 29 (2019-02-23 - Rating: 5)

Very generous selection of beers from all over. Both at the bar and in the coolers. Some that I have been looking hard for in other stores. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Priced high compared to other beer suppliers, but maybe we are paying extra for the selection.

  • Review 30 (2023-08-26 - Rating: 5)

What a wonderful place to hangout, watch the crowds go by, and guzzle some awesome beer all at the same time! Too bad it’s a BYOH (bring your own ‘hors d’œuvres’) otherwise so pleasantly pleasant. Highly recommended for anytime dates, and get togethers between friends and more. Maybe that meeting place for the blind date online or dating-something app!!

  • Review 31 (2019-10-08 - Rating: 5)

Good selection of craft beer on tap. Wide selection of cans and bottles in the fridge. On the pricey side but good chill atmosphere and free bowl of pretzels to munch on while you enjoy your beer!

  • Review 32 (2019-05-08 - Rating: 5)

Awesome place for some genuinely interesting beers in the Lower East Side. Its a good balance of bar (plenty of space to sit and drink) and shop (lots if choices to buy and leave with). Plus they stock Trooper from Robinsons, so thats a bonus.

  • Review 33 (2019-11-27 - Rating: 4)

A little expensive. However you can over look that for the amazing selection on offer here. On tap or in can you can 100% find something to appease the taste buds. Add to that the great atmosphere and super fun bar staff you have your self a winning spot that everyone who likes beer should have at the top of there lists.

  • Review 34 (2022-08-28 - Rating: 5)

I love this place so much to unwind after work! Lauren is a very attentive and knowledgeable bartendress. I also appreciate how friendly other patrons are - the conversations are always fun here.

  • Review 35 (2018-04-05 - Rating: 5)

If youre looking for good beer in a fun environment in the Lower East Side, this is your place. You can buy bottles from around the world and pay a $3 capping fee on premise, or enjoy one of the many incredible pints they have on tap.

  • Review 36 (2017-05-23 - Rating: 5)

The service was fantastic, the servers literally do a taste test with you to figure out which beer you might like. The range of beer is phenomenal and the ones I tasted were fantastic. The place wasnt too crowded and the seating was quite cool.

  • Review 37 (2016-02-02 - Rating: 5)

An amazing array of draft beer is on display on a giant chalkboard behind the bar, with a ton of detail including the origin of each beer, as well as when each keg was tapped and each line cleaned. The selection of bottled beer is impressive too, as is the service.

  • Review 38 (2017-02-07 - Rating: 5)

Top Hops is a top-notch combo beer store + bar. Extensive collection of craft beers, very helpful staff, and relaxed environment where you cant choose whether to stay and snack, or head home with your booty.

  • Review 39 (2016-10-20 - Rating: 5)

Best bottle shop in Manhattan IMO. Try a draft or select a beer from the fridges and take a stool at the bar. They show sports sometimes and if you stay long enough, expect broken pretzels which will keep you sipping on those beers.Grab some merch, t shirts are cool.

  • Review 40 (2020-07-31 - Rating: 5)

Really great outdoor place, no reservations though. Great beers, really knowledgeable staff and super nice. Love it and will go next week when i am off, to enjoy the atmosphere!

  • Review 41 (2019-06-07 - Rating: 5)

Awesome place to try beers and ciders. Pick it out of the liquor store fridge, pay a corking fees, and Bam. Nice, quite bar. We saw a French bulldog hanging out at the bar. So cute.

  • Review 42 (2018-01-08 - Rating: 5)

Their beer choices are too damn many and too damn good and changes too damn much. The bathroom was vomit free, but they could add a few more seating but its probably more or a standing place, but the beers are so heavy that I wanted to sit.

  • Review 43 (2015-12-15 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 49 (2020-02-03 - Rating: 5)

This is a great place that I pass by almost everyday. I had to buy a Christmas gift for my boss yesterday who happens to love craft beer so I decided to give them a try. I’m not a beer drinker at all so I had no idea what to ask for. The man behind the counter was incredibly knowledgeable and so helpful. He was able to give me a selection of 6 different craft beers that made my boss very happy. I really wish I knew his name because he should be recognized for doing such good work! The environment there is really great and i just can’t get over how helpful this man was. Just a terrific experience overall. Thanks so much!

  • Review 50 (2018-07-05 - Rating: 4)

Lots of taps, love that they put the date that they tapped the beers on the board. Check the dates in the canned IPAs though, saw some New England IPAs that were more than 2 months old.

  • Review 51 (2019-02-08 - Rating: 4)

Great selection of beers. I would suggest getting the beers on tap if you want to stay and drink as there’s a $3 per bottle surcharge which can bite your wallet. But you can always take them home without the surcharge!

This bar was AMAZING and so was the staff! So when I went, I went with a couple of friends and it was a little crowded for us so we were looking to buy beers and take them elsewhere. In the back half, there are fridges that line the walls with beers from all over the US and different countries as well. I said to the bartender if I like Sam Adams, what beer would you recommend? He popped out from behind the bar and picked out a beer for me from the fridges! I bought it for only about $3. (Heads up, if you want to drink the beer at the bar, you have to add $3 to every beer that you drink. So if I drank 1 of those beers at the bar, it would be $6 because 3+3=6.) We asked the guy if he knew any BYOB restaurants nearby because the bar was a little crowded for us. He pointed out a small Thai food place for us, which was really nice of him! After drinking the beer, he definitely was good at matching domestic beers with foreign ones. Was a fun experience for beer lovers!

Go to in the LES. Great drafts and huge bottle selection.

  • Review 120 (2019-02-08 - Rating: 4)

If you are looking for a great beer, look no further. They have an impressive selection of taps, and also have a large selection of domestic and international beers. You can mix and match to your hearts desire. However if you plan on drinking any of the cans or bottles inside the bar, there is a $2.00 opening fee.All in all a great place for taps, or a great place to grab a few beers to go!

  • Review 121 (2022-07-14 - Rating: 5)

Great place, good beer and our bartender Don was an utter delight!

  • Review 122 (2015-11-30 - Rating: 5)

One of the earliest craft beer bar and shop that I know of in NYC. The fridge area in the back area offers so many selections of craft beers --- its definitely a wonderland for beer lovers. The bar area is nice, usually filled with friendly folks that know their beers. It also offers bar snacks (soft pretzels, etc.). I came down here during the Black Friday event --- the whole tap line was Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Amazing.

  • Review 123 (2018-11-15 - Rating: 5)

Ah-may-zing. Beers from all over the world sold by the taster, pint, growler or bottled/cans in the coolers in the back. Great lite bites if youre looking for something to go with your tasty beer. Aside from showing the style, producer, name, and ABV, Top Hops also tells you when they last cleaned the keg line. FRESHEST BEER IN NYC!

  • Review 124 (2017-12-15 - Rating: 5)

Wonderful beer store with a nice selection. A cool thing is that you can pay 3$ more on any beer in the fridge and drink it at the bar. From someone from Canada, that à very nice feature. I really enjoy the place.

  • Review 125 (2017-03-12 - Rating: 4)

This bar doubles as a beer vendor. You pay a bottle fee if you drink the beer there. The fee used to be very cheap, but they recently upped it, so its no longer as easy on the wallet to survey a bunch of esoteric beers. Their bar snack is free hard sourdough pretzels, which are great. The bartenders are super knowledgeable about beer too!

  • Review 126 (2018-05-30 - Rating: 5)

Great bar and beer cooler shop. Great selection of craft brews, tap selection changes daily.Wednesday bartender is the one of the better more attentive and friendly ones.Had a surprise party here and friends loved it!

  • Review 127 (2019-07-11 - Rating: 5)

Awesome craft beer shop in the LES. One of the cooler layouts for a store that I’ve seen. Staff is really cool as well. Great place to come chill for a beer, or to just come and grab some good stuff to bring home.

  • Review 131 (2013-03-02 - Rating: 5)

Top Hops Beer shop is amazing, the selection is great both in the bottle and on tap. The food (especially the pretzels) is great as well. Perfect spot to come and fill up your growler or sit for a beer or two. Staff is very friendly and knowledgable about beer. Definitely worth a trip to the LES.

  • Review 132 (2018-12-05 - Rating: 4)

I thought this was a liquor store, turns out they have a bar! Great range of beers, mostly from Illinois but some from NY. I know its not New England but the NY NEIPA was slightly disappointing. Would be good to see more local brews - perhaps I was there on an off week.

  • Review 133 (2015-05-01 - Rating: 5)

Best craft beer shop / bar in the city.

  • Review 134 (2016-08-03 - Rating: 5)

Beer selection is top notch at Top Hops! Ive been here at all different times of day. Afternoons and evenings the place is packed. Right at opening and closing time is a great time to go if you want to talk beer with the people behind the bar. I always find one or two on tap Ive never had, never heard of, or had been wanting to try.

  • Review 135 (2018-05-22 - Rating: 5)

A truly outstanding beer shop. With 30 something beers on tap and hundreds in the cooler youll never leave unsatisfied. Bartenders are also super pleasant.

  • Review 136 (2021-07-16 - Rating: 4)

I really appreciated their selection of athletic brewing non alcoholic beer, but the prices were quite high($8) for na beer and they do not have ice.

  • Review 137 (2013-05-08 - Rating: 5)

I am happy to say this place is quite solid spot for the novice and expert beer drinkers. Lots of options both drafts and bottles to choose from. Plus, the folks behind the counter are cool and unpretentious...so feel free to ask away! They have had Goose Islands Matilda on tap the last couple of times Ive been there an its a real treat! Its a great Belgian blonde. Also, love their representation on the board with the keg date and when their lines have been cleaned for freshness. It would be perfect with more seating and (I know this is wishful thinking but) another restroom would be great too.

  • Review 138 (2018-01-14 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic beer selection. You can buy beer by the bottle for pretty cheap. The sitting room is snug and theres only 7 of them, but theres a bar with seats. The place is worth stopping in for a nice cold one.

  • Review 139 (2014-11-11 - Rating: 5)

Great beer selection both on tap and in the refrigerated section in the back. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate. Theyre willing to offer suggestions if youre unfamiliar with their selection. They also have a pretty delicious pretzel among other bits of bar fare.

  • Review 140 (2017-08-06 - Rating: 4)

Another great find in the lower East side. Before I had even ordered a beer at the bar I was offered a few samples as well as a free beer due to a previous mis-pour. Extensive bottle selection with much of it in coolers and a rapidly rotating draft selection with frequently cleaned tap lines. They also offer half pours of the larger servings.

  • Review 141 (2019-02-19 - Rating: 5)

Apparently, I never rated this place... Not sure how because it is awesome! :)Great beer selection, nice staff, always a pleasure.

  • Review 143 (2017-07-16 - Rating: 5)

Chill place to grab a cold one. The selection of beers from around the world is quite impressive. Try the craft selection tho, its tasty. The flights help with tasting most of them.

  • Review 144 (2017-10-13 - Rating: 5)

Beer lovers rejoice. This is a gem. Warm welcome in a sweet set up, accompanied by a vast selection of world beers. Good nibbles from the local market are available, perfect place to spend a few hours tapping into the knowledge and barrels provided.

Goose island release day taps are fantastic.

  • Review 146 (2016-11-18 - Rating: 5)

Great relaxed place to pick up and drink beer.

  • Review 147 (2019-01-24 - Rating: 4)

Good beers, decent selection, but quite pricey. Coming from the midwest, I expect high prices but this was a $10/bottle premium for some bombers and cans priced to be about $10 to open on premises. Selection was good but not great.

  • Review 148 (2017-02-26 - Rating: 5)

Incredible selection of beer, both on tap as well as in bottles/cans in the 12 fridges that line the place. Great place to stop in and buy a few beers (especially the hard to find types) but a bit too small to be a full bar. When it fills up with people it gets harder and harder to access the fridges.

  • Review 149 (2018-01-31 - Rating: 4)

This is one of my favorite craft beer bars/bottle shops in NYC and Ive been coming here since they opened. Unfortunately, its gotten a lot more crowded than it ever used to be, and sometimes it is impossible to get any space whatsoever in the bar to have a drink. I love the vast selection of bottles and that they allow patrons to drink them in the bar for a reasonable corkage fee. An added benefit is that they clean their taps regularly, and even write the dates on the tap list. More beer bars should do this. Clientele have become a bit more entitled and obnoxious than before, but thats generally the way things are going in the city these days.Their beer classes are absolutely unaffordable.

  • Review 150 (2016-04-21 - Rating: 5)

Top pops is probably the best craft beer bar in downtown Manhattan. While definitely cool, the ambience is always friendly and it never seems to get too crowded. Plus, the beer selection from all around the world is kind of incredible.

  • Review 153 (2018-02-21 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic selection of bottled beers, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Good place to go if the focus is interesting beer and conversation, rather than a party vibe.

  • Review 154 (2015-07-03 - Rating: 5)

Wonderful place to explore new beers and get old favorites. Moreover, great space to work or hang out and the bartenders are super friendly and helpful - knowledgeable of beers and interested in just talking and getting to know people.

  • Review 155 (2015-12-25 - Rating: 5)

Love getting beers there before having dinner in the area. Cozy, but lively. However, sometimes it takes time to get bartenders attention

  • Review 157 (2019-03-26 - Rating: 5)

  • Review 160 (2018-02-11 - Rating: 5)

Great little beer shop with taps, crowlers and growlers, and a big selection of local, national and international brews. Many bottles available for takeaway or to drink in ($5 drink fee applies). It gets lively on weekend nights, but they are still happy to can you a convenient 32oz crowler when its busy
