Nice spot with street dining, you can admire all the people passing by.The smashed burger was amazing, really juicy and with lots of flavor from the pickles and onions, the fries were really good also. The crispy calamari was also really really good, the crust was crispy and the calamari really tender. Good selection of German draft beers. The service wasn’t that good, there was only one server for all the outside tables.

I ordered the Double Smash Burger at the advice of my bartender Sam. It was definitely a top notch burger! On top of that, the staff was very courteous and friendly. Definitely loved the causal bar ambiance and atmosphere is quintessentially New York.

  • Review 3 (2024-08-11 - Rating: 5)

I loved the feel of this old tavern. I didnt get to spend a lot of time there since I was on my way to the airport. Nice little place to absorb the local history. Food is decent as it is a tavern.

  • Review 4 (2024-12-10 - Rating: 5)

Great easy atmosphere with wonderful and helpful staff.Go on a Tuesday night with friends or meet random people (which is what happened to me) and enjoy Quiz Night.

  • Review 5 (2024-11-01 - Rating: 5)

Super delicious bread and butter. We enjoyed the meatloaf and shrimp spaghetti as well.

  • Review 6 (2023-06-13 - Rating: 5)

You feel the energy of the room when you walk in. History here. The drinks were outstanding, service was stellar and the Gouda beer cheese was amazing with the soft Pretzels. Will be back!

  • Review 7 (2024-10-29 - Rating: 4)

Food was good. The beet salad is a must have. I enjoyed the blue cheese burger but my husband not so much. Hence the 4 star for food. The calamari is ok but served with a tomato sauce, which wasnt great. Certainly have had much better calamari. Service was friendly and the vibe of the bar is great. Feels like its been there a long time. Would recommend for a quick bite if youre in the area.

I honestly do not know how long White Horse Tavern has been in existence, but my friend and I discovered it on Sunday, January 30, 2022. She and I went to celebrate our respective Birthdays. It was our first time, but not our last. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the decor was lovely. Although reservations are recommended, it is not a requirement, but both my friend and I were most thankful we had the option of one of two tables. There is a dining limit, and one must wear face coverings when neither eating nor drinking. Also, one must be fully vaccinated for covid19, and present proof of vaccination status. I definitely look forward to returning to this wonderful restaurant, as soon as I can.

  • Review 9 (2023-07-30 - Rating: 4)

Nice bar with large choice of appetizers. We ordered shrimps and shishito peppers. Everything was great but little bit expensive. Also service might be more attentive.

  • Review 10 (2024-11-15 - Rating: 5)

Excellent food. Tasty drinks. Service is on par. This place has a family atmosphere feel to it. Love this place. Would return for sure.Garvin

    Vegan impossible burger was delicious!

  • Review 12 (2024-09-02 - Rating: 4)

SUPER beautiful bar with small portion but TASTY food. The drinks are wonderful; second oldest bar in NYC to this day for a reason!

  • Review 13 (2018-05-15 - Rating: 4)

Came here on a Saturday afternoon to get some food and a couple of beers. Had the chicken sandwich which was good. Service was a little spotty but there was two servers working a packed outdoor space. One of the older establishments in NYC. Worth a visit.

  • Review 14 (2023-11-02 - Rating: 5)

The mussels and peppers appetizers were the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.. Thanks to my excellent and adorable waitress Sophie, my visit to the White Horse Tavern today became the highlight of my week.

  • Review 15 (2024-09-02 - Rating: 5)

Nice restaurant for eating and people watching. The staff was great and helpful. I had the macaroni and cheese appetizer and it was actually a full dinner for me.

  • Review 16 (2024-07-26 - Rating: 5)

I have been going to the White Horse Tavern since 1967. We didnt eat, just drank at the bar. I wish I could say that I saw Dylan Thomas there or, or Bob Dylan or the Clancys, its possible that I did but after too much single malt I have no memory.

  • Review 17 (2024-09-10 - Rating: 5)

We loved this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious. The B.E.C. Dumplings are to die for! Pictured is the burnt lemon chicken and the double smashburger. So good! We’ll be going back next time we’re in NYC for sure!

  • Review 18 (2018-08-02 - Rating: 5)

Awesome place. Good service. Nice options for vegetarians. Location is also good. The digital juke box is a nice addition. You can play songs of your choice. One song for a dollar and 6 songs for 5 dollars. For us the most memorable part was when we found and played kishore kumar song on the juke box. Loved it. The place is not that pricy as well. We ordered veggie wrap with curly fries and chips-salsa

  • Review 19 (2024-10-14 - Rating: 5)

On this visit, we enjoyed a great brunch after a good walk down through Chelsea and into the West Village...perfect early fall Sunday in NYC.

  • Review 20 (2024-05-14 - Rating: 5)

One of the most iconic burgers in all of New York City! This place has been doing it right for a few centuries now!All of the drinks are fantastic, you cannot go wrong with any of them. And get all the apps the Caesar salad, the nachos the calamari we devoured it all! Came for this burger and stayed for the vibes

  • Review 21 (2024-09-15 - Rating: 5)

Just like you should go to L street tavern when in Boston, you should visit White Horse Tavern when in NYC. Dylan Thomas was an amazing poet and spent time at the WHT. Almost takes you back in time

  • Review 22 (2024-09-28 - Rating: 4)

Stopped in late night after dinner nearby. Perfect, very friendly service. Date got the bacon, I got the shishito peppers.

  • Review 23 (2019-09-28 - Rating: 4)

As an european tourist, I can say this is the place to experience bar/restaurant with american atmosphere.Waiters ignored us for 15 minutes (until we approached them) - the lady at the bar was not very nice.Burgers were tasty, we appreciated rich offer of crafted beers.

  • Review 24 (2021-01-04 - Rating: 5)

Classic and great. Wonderful staff, delicious cocktails, fun weekend brunch, and lots of outdoor dining space. Busy spot so make reservations. Get the chicken sandwich.

  • Review 28 (2019-06-15 - Rating: 4)

It is a wonderful experience to visit this tavern.Very long carried the chicken with some cake, and never brought, only roast chicken brought.

  • Review 29 (2024-12-31 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 30 (2024-04-26 - Rating: 4)

Great vibes. one of the oldest bar in the city. nice patio in the summer and great drinks served all night long. go in the afternoon to enjoy west village on a sunny day. this place is always packed so you may have to wait in line to get a seat. cool decor inside too - must see in the city.

  • Review 31 (2023-09-16 - Rating: 5)

Were from out of town, we stumbled on this place by accident looking for another place, the guy out front told us to come in, 10 of us. We couldnt believe they could seat us right away, but they had these booths that were great. Our server Tina was really friendly and awesome. Really made us feel welcome. Then the food was great prices, didnt even feel like we were in NYC. And all very good! It was my moms 75th birthday, so it really meant a lot that it was such a great experience. Thank you guys!

  • Review 32 (2024-11-28 - Rating: 5)

Great classic bar. Wonderful history. Service is always great. Food is okay, not great, but you come here for the drinks, atmosphere, and hanging out with friends. Very warm and welcoming.

  • Review 33 (2024-04-08 - Rating: 5)

Great to visit the place that Dylan Thomas effectively made his home and hear how he carefully chose his drinking spot at the bar, so he could see if hoards of fans were approaching and take evasive action!

  • Review 34 (2023-11-01 - Rating: 5)

Sat down for drinks. Good beer selection and friendly service.

  • Review 35 (2023-10-28 - Rating: 5)

Desperately seeking hashbrowns!!! We have lived here since 2015...this is our first time eating here and we had brunch. We dont understand why this place isnt packed!!! Real hashbrowns, great food, service. Wife had the hangover hash, so good! I had the large two egg breakfast with pancakes. All were terrific and Mark and the crew were great. Order a bottle of prosecco, a side of orange juice and you have your own bottle mimosa service. We will definitely be back!!

  • Review 36 (2024-05-10 - Rating: 5)

Has a fantastic experience!!! Our server Brandon was fabulous. Cocktails were great as was the appetizer and entree.

  • Review 37 (2024-05-05 - Rating: 4)

This place is an institution & the burgers are fantastic. It became pricey after the renovation, but I still go for the charm and the outdoor seating.

  • Review 38 (2024-05-03 - Rating: 5)

Recommended by a friend whos lived here for almost 30 years - the true time travel NY classic food/drink experience - get their Manhattan with your lunch right when they open - you cannot go wrong! YOURE HERE FOR THIS XD

  • Review 39 (2023-03-19 - Rating: 4)

I recently visited this crowded bar with some friends, but thankfully we had a reservation for a table in the back room, which was a bit less hectic. I wish that the music wasnt so loud in that back room.I looked at the cocktail menu, but nothing really stood out to me, so I opted for a classic margarita. It was tasty but I was surprised when I received the bill and saw that it was $18 - a bit steep for a standard marg.If I were to come again, I would make sure to arrive early, perhaps before 9pm, and snag a seat in the front room. I would also stick to a $7 beer or cider.Heads up, after ten minutes, the bar will give your table to another party.

  • Review 40 (2023-09-08 - Rating: 5)

So good. Watched football and had drinks. Then ended up ordering some food. French onion soup was fantastic! And pretzel bites were really good, got some buffalo sauce to use as a dip...yum.

  • Review 41 (2023-03-16 - Rating: 4)

We stopped in while sightseeing and had a good lunch. Food was very good but the hood on the grill was down and the menu was very limited. We still had a good experience and think it would have been 5 stars if all options were available.

  • Review 42 (2023-06-20 - Rating: 5)

This was one of my favorite places to eat in nyc. Great service, great food, great atmosphere in a wonderful part of the city. Go and enjoy yourself!

  • Review 43 (2023-06-03 - Rating: 5)

Super crowded Saturday afternoon. Lots of energy and noise. Excellent spicy White Horse red ale. They squeezed us in without a reservation at 4 pm. The French dip sandwich and au jus was tasty and served quickly. This place is worth a visit!

  • Review 44 (2021-10-23 - Rating: 5)

Fantastic place for food or just a drink. Ken is the star there, great recommendations for both food and drinks!

  • Review 45 (2021-09-26 - Rating: 4)

Well, place is good. Was full when we came, noisy, but good to gather with friends.

  • Review 46 (2024-04-24 - Rating: 5)

Quite possibly the best espresso martini I’ve ever had, and I’ve had quite a few. Chris the bartender was great!

  • Review 47 (2023-11-26 - Rating: 5)

Coming from Swansea, I wanted to visit here because of the Dylan Thomas connection. I hadn’t given much thought to what the place might be like but it turned out to be my favourite place of the weekend. Great atmosphere, customers clearly enjoying themselves, good food & very attentive service. Diolch yn fawr 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

1980s bar vibe, good food , great service! You should go!

  • Review 49 (2022-10-15 - Rating: 5)

Went with friends for food and drinks after a show and it was everything we were looking for and more. The burger was amazing, the caesar salad delish, the white horse beer divine and the mac and cheese out of this world. It also doesnt hurt that the location is iconic, close to everything and the staff a delight. Would recommend 10/10

  • Review 50 (2019-01-08 - Rating: 5)

Great place to chill out and grab a drink. Went there on a very quiet Monday evening, service was prompt and profession. My table got beers, curly fries, and jalapeno poppers. Standard bar food, nothing fancy. They served on paper plates, so we got a proper dive-y feel. Definitely a good place to go for conversation with friends!

  • Review 51 (2019-09-28 - Rating: 5)

Great place & so historic; from 1880!! Bartender was so sweet & we got there during brunch hours. I had the avocado toast that had pickled radishes atop 😋 so good!! The drinks are delicious & just the right amount of strong. They have outdoor seating in the warm months and located in the beautiful neighborhood of Greenwich village.

  • Review 52 (2018-03-08 - Rating: 4)

Great place to have eggs Benedict and a Bloody Mary. Or, just hang out at the bar with friends. Been coming here for years. Very old bar with historical people that did same bar crawl once long ago . This is not a place if you are looking for trendy or glitzy ambiance. It is a jean or short wearing grab a beer type place . But, has some good food; bar food or platter dishes. Can get crowded here especially during the weekend and warmer weather. They have outside sitting; if you are into that. But, service can be lacking when it gets crowded; to be expected. Its a fairly large place and the wait staff have their hands full. But, otherwise if you get there early you can grab a meal and a drink with ease.

  • Review 53 (2024-07-02 - Rating: 5)

Fun way to grab a bite to eat in the city! Food was Great 👍🏻

  • Review 54 (2021-08-07 - Rating: 5)

Very cool old-school restaurant and tavern. The aesthetic was very cool and the beer was very good. The Caesar salad was decent and the service was okay. Definitely a place you go for the experience instead of the food.

  • Review 55 (2023-12-29 - Rating: 4)

Pub/restaurant styles in line with West village shabby chic. Primary is social drunks with friends, not so much a romantic dinner location.

  • Review 56 (2024-11-01 - Rating: 5)

Went here with some friends for dinner and drinks a. Great food and atmosphere!

  • Review 57 (2018-12-07 - Rating: 5)

Great ambiance. Good food. Good service.

  • Review 58 (2021-05-18 - Rating: 5)

Great place for social drinks and snacks. The food is good enough but its still great to be here, the decor and staff all is nice and worth coming to this cool neighborhood.

  • Review 59 (2022-02-11 - Rating: 4)

Needed a Guinness and didn’t disappoint in this neighborhood gem! Bartender gave a recommendation for a very nice speakeasy near by called little branch, or LB, another great find. Great craft cocktails.

  • Review 60 (2021-09-17 - Rating: 5)

One of the oldest spots in the city, this NY staple can do no wrong. My table had a delicious burger cooked perfectly to order, an amazing Buffalo Bleu fried chicken sandwich, and perfectly crafted classic cocktails. Even the chefs choice cocktail, a refreshing blend of gin and aloe, was absolutely unforgettable.

  • Review 61 (2021-07-22 - Rating: 5)

This my second time and everything is very good so far. Delicious food and friendly staff. I will definitely come back

  • Review 62 (2024-12-10 - Rating: 4)

  • Review 63 (2022-04-19 - Rating: 5)

Great historic bar in Chelsea. We stopped for drinks and a small appetizer of hummus and pita. Very good.

  • Review 67 (2019-03-10 - Rating: 5)

We come here nearly every time I visit my father in the West Village. Fantastic burgers and great drinks, and the kind of atmosphere that makes everyone feel like a local. This is a hang-out - this is a haunt. Love this place.

  • Review 68 (2014-06-30 - Rating: 4)

Great Pub food, burgers, etc. Sit outside on a beautiful day -- great for people watching. Close to the Hudson River Park and also Bleecker St. Shops. Great Draft Beer (so Ive heard, although I dont drink!). I love sitting outside here and just relaxing. Its great.

  • Review 69 (2019-06-08 - Rating: 4)

Nice outside seating. inside seating has traditional nice feel. Scotch eggs are done very nicely and very tasty. Veal croquettes though not made with any potato, had nice crust and good meat inside.Cant vouch for the beer but ginger mocktail was excellent.

  • Review 70 (2018-06-26 - Rating: 5)

Had a late lunch here, sitting outside on a pleasantly cool summer day. The six of us had sandwiches, which were reasonably priced and good for a NY tourist type place. The people watching was excellent and so was the service.

  • Review 71 (2022-12-22 - Rating: 5)

Such rich literary history at this place, great atmosphere, friendly bartenders and a damn good hot toddy. Buffalo chicken sandwich was really good, too.

  • Review 72 (2024-08-30 - Rating: 5)

Food, drinks, service and atmosphere all 10 out of 10! Best tavern

  • Review 73 (2019-03-16 - Rating: 5)

I love this bar, the atmosphere is great, the drinks are great and last night my wallet fell out of my bag and when I went back today they had kept it safely for me behind the bar. Thank you so much White Horse crew! You all are lovely!

  • Review 74 (2024-02-17 - Rating: 5)

Needed a spot to grab some food and a drink after a show on a Friday night. Everything was booked up down the street. We took a chance on White Horse. Went in and the place was PACKED. The waitress was very kind and professional, and was able to find us a spot quickly. Within 2 mins our waiter got us started, a couple mins later took our order, and 2-3 mins after that we had our drinks (the nachos came shortly after). We were blown away at how efficient everything was, even though this place was PACKKKKKKED. Highly recommended, but if you get the nachos ask them to hold back a little on the black beans, our nachos were swimming in them.

  • Review 75 (2021-04-01 - Rating: 4)

Great food, Killer historical vibe, and lots of drinking option!

  • Review 76 (2018-10-01 - Rating: 5)

The White Horse made special arrangements for our group to occupy- if-not- reserve some space for our 51st GRAMMAR SCHOOL reunion! Yes, its true - people still remember stuff at our age! It was a ball, made even more merry knowing where we were: in one of the most iconic, historic taverns in the West Village. We are a bunch of lucky kids, to have grown up in this neighborhood, in the 60s, part of our own historic moment; feeling that energy. The old decor still beautiful; loooong, old wooden bar with the brass rails; windows looking out over Hudson Street. Funny little stairs up & down into the parlors. Man...ya just gotta go enjoy the drinks, the atmosphere, the great service & maybe pick up on the eclectic cast of infamous writers & talents who graced its walls in eras past.

  • Review 77 (2016-06-10 - Rating: 4)

Very fun, very cool atmosphere. The service is slow, but we expected that so it didnt take away from the experience. I was pleasantly surprised at how great the food is, given that this type of place could get by with mediocre quality. Worth it, but pricey!

  • Review 78 (2017-10-12 - Rating: 4)

After what was the most worse long weekends of my life (New York) Where we must of talked to the most rudest of people, it was so bad There Elaine had tears on more than 3 occations. (not that I would say everyone there was like that). It was nice to go to this pub and have a friendly smile a chat with staff and the meal was lovely too. We are from the Swansea area that is what attracted us there, so glad we did, can see why Dylan Thomas drank here. Thanks for the rest bite from New York. Handel

  • Review 79 (2019-05-08 - Rating: 5)

Had a good time here, this is a classic pub in New York City - good beer selection. Outdoors gets pretty crowded but if you snag a seat service is great and the people watching is better in this prime West Village spot

  • Review 84 (2024-06-22 - Rating: 5)

I ordered the pot roast for lunch and it was delicious. The beef was tender. The mashed potatoes were great and the vegetables brought it all together. Sucks I couldnt have a Guinness with it but I was at work so no drinking. It is always crowded during lunch.

  • Review 85 (2014-03-12 - Rating: 4)

History, Dylan Thomas, Norman Mailer, the Village Voice was started here. Great tap brewskis. Jovial atmosphere. No attitude. An institution and it remains true to its roots. Whats not to like, not fancy, dress as you are, come as you are.

We just had the absolute best experience at White Horse. Our server Brandon was exceptional and made our experience 10x better. I’ve had 15 years in the industry, so it was wonderful to see such great service, atmosphere and food. The burger, French dip, cocktails… 10 out of 10. We’ll be back as soon as possible. Thank you White Horse Tavern for an awesome time. Never change.

  • Review 91 (2023-03-31 - Rating: 5)

Visited because of its amazing history and those artists and literary figures who have been there before. It was mobbed and spent most of the time trying to keep out of peoples way. Worth the visit, but book a table or avoid at weekends

  • Review 92 (2022-12-13 - Rating: 5)

Spring day, Sunshine, Great cold beer selection and People watching with friends...good times is what it is! Not for those looking for a mixologist or deconstructed libations...is what it is and what it is is great and has a history to match!

Fun spot to grab a drink in the west village and they have amazing curly fries. The bloody merry was delicious.

One of New Yorks oldest bars. Great time with great people

  • Review 104 (2024-06-01 - Rating: 5)

Somehow has been turned into a hotspot overrun with bros, a bouncer (!?) and overpriced food. The food is pretty good, as long as youre cool paying $19 for wings or $26 for a burger that is nearly identical to the $11 version at Smashed across the street.5 stars because I still hope this place lasts forever.

  • Review 107 (2016-04-04 - Rating: 4)

Historic place which offers good quality drinks. Staff appeared to be a bit rude but it was maybe due to the high volume of people and they were trying to serve everyone as quickly as possible.

We had one night to walk around in Greenwich Village, and this stop grounded us to the neighborhood. A good place for a pint of Guinness.

Lovely pint of Brooklyn Lager on a hot day. Not a chance in hell of getting a seat outside when we were there but well worth a visit.

  • Review 125 (2019-01-21 - Rating: 5)

Everything from the quality of food to presentation was impressive. It doesn’t mention it on the website but business casual attire is highly recommended.

  • Review 126 (2024-01-06 - Rating: 5)

I did not enter to eat, but as I spent the end of 2023 chasing ghosts and spirits, I wanted to share one last toast with Dylan Thomas. I did, and it was a serene moment. The tavern is intimate, warm, and enveloping. The staff was friendly and welcoming without being maudlin. It was a surreal moment bathing in the aura of...not going gentle into that good night.

  • Review 127 (2018-11-23 - Rating: 4)

This place was pretty good. It has a old feel too it. Has burgers, sandwiches and other food that is pretty good. I would go back.

  • Review 128 (2018-03-25 - Rating: 4)

A cool space with a lot of history. I was a bit disappointed that they are still cash only and it wasnt mentioned on their website. But other than that, I would definitely go again. The center room is the Dylan Thomas room, and its the space you want to sit in if you want to have a conversation. It gets pretty loud in the front bar with the TV and the main entrance right there. And the back room has the access to the kitchen, so its a little loud in there as well. But the entire bar feels like just another neighborhood bar, which is great. No flash. No pomp. Just a very chill bar where you can get a great Shepherds Pie and an OK pastrami Reuben. Id definitely visit again. I recommend you get there early in the evening if you want to grab a seat in the Dylan Thomas room -- arrive around 6-7pm.

She showed us to our reserved table, helped us with the bottle service and even let us make a song request with the DJ. So fun!Our food came out quickly, was delicious and definitely balanced our drinks out :)I will definitely be back. When in NY , and you need A GREAT TIME, GO HERE!
